‘“Individualism” claims G.K. Chesterton, “kills individuality.” While perhaps formulating a subjectivist paradise devoid of “pure” objective rationality, Nietzsche opened the door to a form of individualism that led to a new extreme of impotence and feebleness that the Enlightenment might never have reached. Peterson’s dour temperament, juxtaposed with the well-adjusted temperaments of the jovial Chesterton and the vivacious [Slavoj] Zizek . . . testifies to the death of individuality under the tyranny of individualism.
To base one’s moral compass on lived relationships with real people outside of one’s head, rather than on abstractions of their selfhood or of “humanity” broadly speaking, seems to be both a necessary and perplexing conundrum. The self, for Chesterton, was perpetually caught in a tension whose dynamic was relational. Existence and freedom are not to be harnessed and regulated, nor outsourced and relieved of responsibility. They are gifts…and at times curses, but always given, implying a relationship between a gift-giver and the self as receiver. “Most modern freedom is at root fear,” writes Chesterton, “It is not so much that we are too bold to endure rules; it is rather that we are too timid to endure responsibilities.” Responsibility for Chesterton is not so much a matter of lifting oneself up by one’s bootstraps, but a response to the One who gives one his existence. Thus, we are faced with Chesterton’s ability to hold together the paradox of the power of free will, but also its fragility and limitations.’
— Stephen G. Adubato: “Beyond the Cult of Self-Reliant Bootstrapping”

Thanksgiving to God
1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his gracious love is eternal.
2 Let Israel now say, “His gracious love is eternal.” 3 Let the house of Aaron now say, “His gracious love is eternal.” 4 Let those who fear the Lord now say, “His gracious love is eternal.”
5 I called on the Lord in my distress; the Lord answered me openly. 6 The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid. What can people do to me? 7 With the Lord beside me as my helper, I will triumph over those who hate me.
8 It is better to take shelter in the Lord than to trust in people. 9 It is better to take shelter in the Lord than to trust in princes.
10 All the nations surrounded me; but in the name of the Lord I will defeat them. 11 They surrounded me, they are around me; but in the name of the Lord I will defeat them. 12 They surrounded me like bees; but they will be extinguished like burning thorns. In the name of the Lord I will defeat them.
13 Indeed, you oppressed me so much that I nearly fell, but the Lord helped me. 14 The Lord is my strength and protector, for he has become my deliverer. 15 There’s exultation[h] for deliverance in the tents of the righteous: “The right hand of the Lord is victorious! 16 The right hand of the Lord is exalted! The right hand of the Lord is victorious!”
17 I will not die, but I will live to recount the deeds of the Lord. 18 The Lord will discipline me severely, but he won’t hand me over to die.
19 Open for me the righteous gates so I may enter through them to give thanks to the Lord. 20 This is the Lord’s gate— The righteous will enter through it.
21 I will praise you because you have answered me and have become my deliverer. 22 The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23 This is from the Lord— it is awesome in our sight. 24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let’s rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Please Lord, deliver us! Please Lord, hurry and bring success now!
26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Let us bless you from the Lord’s house. 27 The Lord is God—he will be our light! Bind the festival sacrifice with ropes to the horn at the altar. 28 You are my God, and I will praise you; my God, and I will exalt you. 29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good and his gracious love is eternal. — Psalm 118 | International Standard Version (ISV) The International Standard Version of the Holy Bible Copyright © 1995-2014 by ISV Foundation. @jiskblr re: this post:
i agree that there's a common view where merchants are evil because they're not productive, but you're somewhat wrong on the intellectual history side of things. Adam Smith believed the labor theory of value* and Marx's labor theory of value in Capital is largely derived from Smith's and Ricardo's (because he was responding to the dominant economic thought of his day). Marx's primary innovation afaik was his emphasis on the split between exchange-value/price and use-value/utility (which he views in its concrete, particular manifestations rather than as an abstract aggregatable quality, e.g. the use-value of a coat is it keeps you warm and dry).
i havent read Ricardo but if wikipedia is to be believed, Ricardo and Marx differ from Smith in that they attempt to actually count the full amount of labor embodied in commodities. on the other hand, Smith and Marx differ from Ricardo in that they believe laborers receive the full, fair price of their labor as wages (yes, Marx believes this**). in Marx and Smith, unlike Ricardo, the LTV is intended to be a description of actual price formation (on average, in equilibrium, modulo supply and demand, etc) rather than some moral ideal about what prices should be.
and Marx at least is very clear that transportation of goods is productive labor*** because it generates use-value by moving them from somewhere they're less useful to somewhere they're more useful (Capital vol 2 ch 6). i didn't make it through the whole Wealth of Nations but i assume Smith says something similar somewhere.
*Wealth of Nations vol 1 ch 5: "The real price of everything, what everything really costs to the man who wants to acquire it, is the toil and trouble of acquiring it...Labour was the first price, the original purchase-money that was paid for all things. It was not by gold or by silver, but by labour, that all the wealth of the world was originally purchased; and its value, to those who possess it, and who want to exchange it for some new productions, is precisely equal to the quantity of labour which it can enable them to purchase or command... At all times and places that is dear which it is difficult to come at, or which it costs much labour to acquire; and that cheap which is to be had easily, or with very little labour. Labour alone, therefore, never varying in its own value, is alone the ultimate and real standard by which the value of all commodities can at all times and places be estimated and compared. It is their real price; money is their nominal price only."
**This is one of the most common misunderstandings about Marx even among self-identified Marxists. This post is already long but the short version is, unlike Ricardo, he's not mad that workers aren't paid "fairly", but instead thinks "fairness" under the system means awful conditions for workers. I can go into more detail about how he theoretically justifies this if desired.
***Also probably worth noting that this is not a moral term. "Productive" to Marx means "producing value for capitalists". Domestic servants, for instance, are not productive laborers in this schema (despite obviously doing hard work with real utility) because their labor is purchased for its use-value directly as a form of consumption for the wealthy, rather than as a way to make money. Marx is more vague about administration, management, etc, but does make a point somewhere in Vol 1 of noting that these jobs are usually not done by the actual big capitalists, but rather by people hired for the specific purpose and paid wages like any other worker.
#frankly marx's reliance on classical political economists is one of his weakest points#not one he can particularly be blamed for given when he was writing but certainly one that his deifiers can be blamed for#Capital is a historically specific and notably unfinished critique not The Gospel Of Economics#trying to make it the latter just puts the whole enterprise on foundations of sand

Homemaking, gardening, and self-sufficiency resources that won't radicalize you into a hate group
It seems like self-sufficiency and homemaking skills are blowing up right now. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the current economic crisis, a lot of folks, especially young people, are looking to develop skills that will help them be a little bit less dependent on our consumerist economy. And I think that's generally a good thing. I think more of us should know how to cook a meal from scratch, grow our own vegetables, and mend our own clothes. Those are good skills to have.
Unfortunately, these "self-sufficiency" skills are often used as a recruiting tactic by white supremacists, TERFs, and other hate groups. They become a way to reconnect to or relive the "good old days," a romanticized (false) past before modern society and civil rights. And for a lot of people, these skills are inseparably connected to their politics and may even be used as a tool to indoctrinate new people.
In the spirit of building safe communities, here's a complete list of the safe resources I've found for learning homemaking, gardening, and related skills. Safe for me means queer- and trans-friendly, inclusive of different races and cultures, does not contain Christian preaching, and does not contain white supremacist or TERF dog whistles.
Homemaking/Housekeeping/Caring for your home:
Making It by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen [book] (The big crunchy household DIY book; includes every level of self-sufficiency from making your own toothpaste and laundry soap to setting up raised beds to butchering a chicken. Authors are explicitly left-leaning.)
Safe and Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair by Mercury Stardust [book] (A guide to simple home repair tasks, written with rentals in mind; very compassionate and accessible language.)
How To Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis [book] (The book about cleaning and housework for people who get overwhelmed by cleaning and housework, based on the premise that messiness is not a moral failing; disability and neurodivergence friendly; genuinely changed how I approach cleaning tasks.)
Gardening
Rebel Gardening by Alessandro Vitale [book] (Really great introduction to urban gardening; explicitly discusses renter-friendly garden designs in small spaces; lots of DIY solutions using recycled materials; note that the author lives in England, so check if plants are invasive in your area before putting them in the ground.)
Country/Rural Living:
Woodsqueer by Gretchen Legler [book] (Memoir of a lesbian who lives and works on a rural farm in Maine with her wife; does a good job of showing what it's like to be queer in a rural space; CW for mentions of domestic violence, infidelity/cheating, and internalized homophobia)
"Debunking the Off-Grid Fantasy" by Maggie Mae Fish [video essay] (Deconstructs the off-grid lifestyle and the myth of self-reliance)
Sewing/Mending:
Annika Victoria [YouTube channel] (No longer active, but their videos are still a great resource for anyone learning to sew; check out the beginner project playlist to start. This is where I learned a lot of what I know about sewing.)
Make, Sew, and Mend by Bernadette Banner [book] (A very thorough written introduction to hand-sewing, written by a clothing historian; lots of fun garment history facts; explicitly inclusive of BIPOC, queer, and trans sewists.)
Sustainability/Land Stewardship
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer [book] (Most of you have probably already read this one or had it recommended to you, but it really is that good; excellent example of how traditional animist beliefs -- in this case, indigenous American beliefs -- can exist in healthy symbiosis with science; more philosophy than how-to, but a great foundational resource.)
Wild Witchcraft by Rebecca Beyer [book] (This one is for my fellow witches; one of my favorite witchcraft books, and an excellent example of a place-based practice deeply rooted in the land.)
Avoiding the "Crunchy to Alt Right Pipeline"
Note: the "crunchy to alt-right pipeline" is a term used to describe how white supremacists and other far right groups use "crunchy" spaces (i.e., spaces dedicated to farming, homemaking, alternative medicine, simple living/slow living, etc.) to recruit and indoctrinate people into their movements. Knowing how this recruitment works can help you recognize it when you do encounter it and avoid being influenced by it.
"The Crunchy-to-Alt-Right Pipeline" by Kathleen Belew [magazine article] (Good, short introduction to this issue and its history.)
Sisters in Hate by Seyward Darby (I feel like I need to give a content warning: this book contains explicit descriptions of racism, white supremacy, and Neo Nazis, and it's a very difficult read, but it really is a great, in-depth breakdown of the role women play in the alt-right; also explicitly addresses the crunchy to alt-right pipeline.)
These are just the resources I've personally found helpful, so if anyone else has any they want to add, please, please do!

MICROPLASTICS FOUND IN THE EXHALED BREATH OF DOLPHINS
Microplastic is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant, widespread across terrestrial and marine environments. In the environment, microparticles have been documented in a variety of fauna. Human epidemiological studies have found relationships between inhaled microplastics and oxidative stress, as well as inflammation.
Recent research has uncovered something quite striking: bottlenose dolphins in Florida and Louisiana are exhaling microplastic fibers. While plastic pollution has been well-documented in marine environments, this new study adds inhalation to the growing list of exposure routes for these animals. Bottlenose dolphins were found to be exhaling microplastics similar in chemical composition to those found in human lungs. Their exposure to microplastics might reveal broader environmental risks, especially for cetaceans health.
Breath samples were collected from wild bottlenose dolphins during health assessments conducted by scientists in collaboration with several organizations, including the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago and the Oceanogràfic Foundation. The researchers used a Petri dish or a custom spirometer to capture the dolphins' exhaled breath and, in the laboratory, analyzed the samples under a microscope for small plastic particles characterized by their smooth surface, bright colors, or fibrous shapes.
- A microplastic from a bottlenose dolphin's breath, nearly 14 times smaller than a human hair. Photo by Dziobak/College of Charleston.
The study found microplastics in dolphins from both urban and rural estuaries, demonstrating that even less-populated areas are not immune to plastic contamination. The key takeaway is that plastic pollution is a widespread issue, with effects that may be more far-reaching than initially thought. While the impacts on dolphins' lung health remain unknown, this research underscores the need to investigate how microplastic inhalation could affect marine life and humans alike. Reducing reliance on plastic is a crucial step toward addressing this growing problem.

sorry i just got blown away by someone interpreting the "never be friends" quote as proof of bangel being A Real Ship because it means they'll never be platonic and so they must end up together romantically versus the very glaring meaning that's actually behind it, which is that bangel has no foundation of partnership, reliance, or commonality to build a lasting and solid relationship upon. the only real substance in their relationship is an explosion of rapidly fading sparks
#anti bangel#kind of going insane over what these people romanticize#like i guess like what you like and ship what you ship#but its baffling to me that you consider this speech as like... proof of their Big Romance#seems to me it just means their relationship is as ephemeral as a spring breeze#btvs#negative#bangel hate#idk man

Crocodile Relationship Headcanons
Tags/Warnings: No Reader Pronouns, Alcohol Mentions
𓆃 The epitome of needing to back up your words with action, because if you're surviving Crocodile, you need to be ballsy and have the power to back it up.
𓆃 Getting on good terms of any kind with Crocodile is a Herculean feat and damn near impossible, given his mess of contradictory standards.
𓆃 Because there's no earning his respect if you don't have a backbone, but he's also bound to be steaming the moment you have anything smart to say.
𓆃 Crocodile is a jaded, old-fashioned pirate with a complex. In fact, the entire "pirate aspect" is 80% pure criminal activity and 20% sailing, because Crocodile is in it to win it and come out on top.
𓆃 Power is king, and anyone who earns a shred of respect from Crocodile is powerful. But it's not enough to be powerful until you prove yourself to be on his level, and even so, Crocodile is too self-absorbed to see you as an equal, even when it comes to individuals with bounties far greater than his.
𓆃 If you're weaker than him, you're a weakling. If you're stronger or on a level playing field, no you're not!
𓆃 Your best odds at any sort of functional relationship (romantic or otherwise) is when you have the slightest edge over him and keep an established record of it!
𓆃 Come out the winner of a duel. Steal the thing that he thought he had stolen from you, but you knew all along he was going to try to do that so Crocodile never actually stole the thing he thought he was stealing from you in the first place—
𓆃 But even so, your successes can't be too successful, or he'll begin to grow jaded. It has to be a slight edge, just enough to keep you alive and keep each other in check.
𓆃 Your foundation will be based on checks and balances, and anything more will be vehemently unspoken.
𓆃 Crocodile, of all people, is not a romantic, and anything more than bitter rivalry will come naturally and with uncommunicated rules just like the beginning of your relationship.
𓆃 You'll do what lovers do, just without the frills and without the acknowledgement.
𓆃 You'll take his clothes, and he hates when you do it. You'll throw a wine bottle at his head, shattering it against a wall as you chase him out of your room. You suspect each other at the drop of a hat and pull your weapons even faster, only for you to let him rest his head in your lap while he enjoys some expensive liquor sometime that evening.
𓆃 He drips whisky on your thighs as it pours out the sides of his mouth, and you hate him for it.
𓆃 You tell him you'll kill him, and he says he'd like to see you try.
𓆃 Or maybe you have no real power at all, but make up for it marginally with nerve.
𓆃 Like a rippling and hissing cat. Or a single dog defending puppies. Or a housewife in an apron with no weapon but a wooden spoon.
𓆃 Little power and little dominion, but enough ferocity to be intriguing. And despite sparking Crocodile's curiosity being a feat in and of itself, someone he perceives is so beneath him isn't bound to hold his attention for long, and definitely will not garner his respect.
𓆃 Perhaps he'll keep you around akin to a pet, only for him to leave you hanging the moment his path for survival intersects with your reliance on his protection.
𓆃 It wouldn't be impossible. When it comes to the kind of man who needs to take things slowly, it isn't impossible to grow on him. Even a softer, direct opposite of Crocodile can worm into his cold, dead heart if the stars aligned.
𓆃 But you're waiting on a time that's dire enough to make him pick between leaving you in the dust and more accidentally showing his hand when it comes to how Crocodile actually feels about you.
𓆃 Getting even remotely close to Crocodile is a gamble, and there's no way to prepare yourself.
Thank you to all who liked, reblogged, followed, and supported. Your support means so much and is greatly appreciated.
