Listen, focusing on a person's relationships/friendships with a bunch of people and their very strong relationship with a particular person are not mutually exclusive things. It is true there is a focus on bonds and the main character's relationship with multiple people as there is a very clear focus on their relationship with one particular person.

for the longest time, it had always been sora, riku and you! the three of you were inseparable and did everything together!

but when kairi arrived at destiny island, the dynamic you guys had changed. sometimes sora would spend his days with her, while other times it was you and him again, while kairi was with riku

kairi was your friend, but you couldn't deny that you were jealous of how much time she got to spend with sora!

it was back then that you realized that you were in love with sora! he was your first love, but you didn't dare confess to him

years passed and the four of you remained good friends. but you always worried that one day, sora would fall in love with kairi, instead of you…

while you loved sora, it hurt being around him too. slowly, you began to spend more time with riku, as it was easier for you

but you distancing yourself from sora was what made him realize his feelings for you!

sora had taken you for granted, always expecting you to stay in his life. until suddenly, you weren't there every day and he began to miss you

seeing you with riku made sora jealous and he couldn't help but wish that he was the one by your side!

what finally got sora to confess to you was hearing from kairi that riku had confessed his love to you as well!

sora knew that if he didn't say anything now, he'd never get a second chance! and so, he rushed to you, surprising you with a confession!

and surprised you were! especially when he mentioned riku's confession to you… that never happened!

turns out kairi and riku were lying to sora about said confession, to give him a push in the right direction and finally admit his feelings for you!

and it truly worked, as now you finally knew sora loved you too and the two of you could be together after so many years of only being friends…

Complicated Platonic SoRiku Feels

Hi again internet void. Please allow me to vent into your uncaring ear. I've been struggling with understanding why platonic SoRiku would be a disappointment to me. Maybe you can help? Let me try to do this succinctly...

SoRiku has been coded in an overwhelmingly romantic way. It's gotten to the point where Nomura showed us only the Fairy Godmother was good enough to send Riku off to fulfill his literal dream of finding Sora. ALONE. SoRiku fans constantly lament that if either Sora or Riku was a girl, then the romance angle would be obvious to the point of overdone. And if the big moments in their relationship weren't enough, check out all those direct comparisons to Disney couples across multiple decades. At this point, platonic SoRiku will only make sense to me if Sora is aromantic. It's drifted too far from the credibly platonic bond we saw in KH1 to be anything but romantic now- especially from Riku's side.

So I guess that's why I don't jive with the general fandom sentiment of "any SoRiku ending is good". It's not and I'm tired of telling myself I should be grateful if it happens in any capacity. I'm not going to be okay with yet another case of writing a romance and refusing to acknowledge it as one. Saying "platonic SoRiku is good" without Sora being aro feels like hedging my bets against being baited again. KH has been built different ever since CoM's aitsu and shared promise shenanigans- don't try to wriggle out of that with "they're the most special guys with the most unique and incomparable bond ever".

Man. I've got even more thoughts about why setting Riku up to be rejected would be cruel and unfulfilling/pointless from a narrative perspective but no one wants to read an essay. I want to hear what other people have to say but asking for someone to read this is less realistic than canon SoRiku ha ha. So thanks for hearing me out, void.

hey has anyone talked about kh2 Winnie the Pooh and how his and Sora's character arc could potentially be foreshadowing/paralleled in the future with Sora not having his memories of Riku and Riku being by his side and Sora knows he's looking for something- someone, in fact- but he can't quite remember who and hello new friend Riku so nice of you to travel with me and help me look :)

one thing i love about kh 'family tree' diagrams is it rlly drives home how little of the confusing 'who is who and there's two copies of this guy' stuff is related to family, which is i feel where a lot of that stuff comes from in other stories. you don't have a long lost dad, you've been possessed by this old guy. oops! there's no family legacy but you ARE a clone so gl with that! bbs eraqus situation obviously exists but even then it's not blood ties. the fact that blood ties almost universally mean fuck all is actually rlly endearing to me

in my head, xehanort has the world's weirdest parental adjacent relationship with each member of the destiny trio...

the fascination in sora's "ordinariness" and later bequeathing of the χ-blade to him, the years long investment in riku morphing into a strange guardianship, the meddling in kairi's life only to haunt her as the off-putting yet helpful spirit in her head

it's an odd "fondness" to me, an ownership in their development. everyone touches on how his presence has shaped their lives, but it's equally true that they also changed him in subtle ways. i think it's meaningful that you have ansem complimenting riku before he dies, that MX tells sora he's a better leader than him before HE dies, that you have the AX of kairi's memories guiding her in the right direction before he fades.

to add to your “why can’t they just be friends” post - why can’t kairi and sora just be friends ? the subtle clues in the storyline of KH is def leading down that path

Yeah I don't get why there always have to be a supposedly girl "love interest" character. But the phrase why can't they be friends is never stated for any straight relationships

I'm not going to pretend there wasn't something between them but after the first game, it seems Sora doesn't feel the same.

and I don't know it's not very interesting with barely any chemistry between them. In kh2 what was that reunion between them. It was awkward and their feelings have passed, but Sora being Sora didn't want to lose her and still wanted to remain her friend.

I don't think their relationship as romantic now. I think it's developed into more of a friendship. and in kh3 the paopu doesn't have to be inherently romantic but how come he felt awkward at first and only took it as a good luck charm

KH has a problem every action movie has where there always have to be a straight romantic interest when why can't they be friends and have the female character get more developed.
