Reading this again as I'm longing for more chapters as the anime has been pretty good at adapting the chapters and this just pissed me tf off. I know lecturers like this at my own institution and I believe people like this shouldn't be "educators" they try to impose what they feel should happen over your own life try to gatekeep and make things unnecessarily difficult and confusing and all it brings is frustration and depression. Fuck any lecturer like this pick another field if you believe you should be the be all end all of somebody's fucking future.

A comically tall tree that I could see out of my window across the street had recently gotten chopped down. I'd stared at it for a couple of years now and admired its unique shape, so its absence brings about an empty feeling in me. Yet for some reason, the more and more I glance out of my window and see the blank space the tree had always preoccupied, the more and more I start to think there wasn't any tree there to begin with. Even though I have photos of the tree, even though I can physically prove it was there, my memories feel like they're being overwritten with what I see today.

I have gotten used enough to its presence to miss it, and used enough to its absence to forget it, and that contradiction baffles me.

like, imagine your absolute dickhead of an ex not only actively tries to destroy the entire world with their absurdly powerful magic abilities but also directly puts in danger your current greatly beloved, you'd probably be at least mildly annoyed too

hey fellow anglophones if you want to be better about pronouncing people's names right instead of pestering every foreign person to coach you on their name for ten minutes while you moan and whimper and self flagellate consider just watching some videos in that language (just regular videos where people are talking not like instructions on that language), try repeating some phrases that catch your ear, until you can distinguish between where words and phrases begin and end and what kind of sounds seem to come up a lot and what the rhythm of the language is and how it feels in your mouth. It doesn't take much time and gets faster the more you do it, you're probably watching YouTube after work anyway, and there's a good chance you'll learn some jokes or references from the culture while you're at it. Looking up the alphabet will help form a picture of what kind of sounds a language is made up of, too, which helps with getting a feeling for pronunciation based on spelling. And if you end up memorizing the alphabet it becomes much easier to find what you need at the African/Asian/European grocery store.

Just stop being so fucking weird about pronouncing things.
