I'm drawing a bit tonight, a treat to myself! Trying to be kinder to myself etc etc.. Though I have had an idea! I have always thought art streams seemed nice! But I am terrible at talking (autism!!) But I've recently had a thought. What if I had an art stream along with music live from my reel to reel? I know I can find out someway to get it to work, surely! But I think it sounds fun. One of those cozy sorts of streams!!

I'm going to try on a new drawing software for that though, because I'm trying to quit Adobe, so we'll see how that goes.

Hello! I’ve been thinking about your stories lately, and got my mind wondering about how you come up with your ideas. What inspired you to make Felix and the Dauntless story? It looks amazing and I can’t wait to see more of it!

Sorry it took so long to respond! I kept coming back to reread this ask I'm just,,, so happy to hear you're interested/excited about Dauntless!!!!! :DDDD

For most of my/our stories (most of the wips are collabs with my sister lol) it usually starts as drawing inspiration from Other stories. We'll watch/read them and go "that was really good, I can see why they made the choices they did narratively, but wouldn't it be fun/cooler if..." then we kinda end up building an entirely new story around that concept. Sometimes they're completely unhinged from the canon cause we love making aus xD

Dauntless is weird in that sense, as it doesn't actually have any origin concept. We wanted each of the main characters in the Keepers saga to come from different backgrounds, and we thought having a cyberpunk ex-spy would be cool. 😂

Thematically it draws a lot from my personal life experience just... dramatized and exported onto a young man living in a futuristic dystopia lol From there the plot kinda ended up being a hodgepodge of all my favorite tropes respun into the sci-fi setting, as this is the first story I've worked on that's not been a fantasy!

The way I make up stories is very character driven, the plot forms as I think about the characters- who they are, who they need to become, and what fears/misconceptions/circumstances they need to overcome to get there. Building a plot always feels like a logic puzzle to me of juggling each member of the cast's arcs and story beats 😂 So most of the plot started from looking at the kind of character I wanted Felix to be at the end of his arc and going "okay what kind of backstory would produce a guy like that?" Then throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what stuck. (This bad boy has gone through so many revisions lol)

I've finally got it worked down to the point where I'm outlining episode/season structure and BOY have I got to tell you that feels good 😭 I am SO excited to share Felix and his pals with the world and it literally means so much to me they've already got a collection of people waiting to watch the show 😭😭

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

Not gonna lie, I go into almost every book I read totally blind, so in some ways, every book surprises me, and in others, very few do.

The Bee Sting by Paul Murray was such a singularly unpleasant reading experience for the entire first 25.5 hours of reading it that, in the last forty minutes that it finally became clear how it was gonna end, I was honestly shocked at how well it did wrap things up.

I was only able to hold out hope the entire 32 hours of The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt because last year I'd read The Secret History by her and I had absolute blind faith in my girl. It was such a long book that felt so meandering (Fun! But meandering, with no evident goal in sight.), I truly could not figure out what on earth message she might have that would make it all worth it, that would make all 32 hours meaningful. And then, in the last five minutes of the book, the trap emerged so beautifully from beneath the foliage, and I was knocked on my ass by how incredibly she cinched it all together. She did that.

Africa is Not a Country by Dipo Faloyin didn't surprise me with its quality so much as it surprised me how well I would enjoy reading a non-fiction book. Historically, non-fiction had always been a bit of a drudge for me to get through, and despite Amanda Montell's Cultish: the Language of Fanatacism before it (which was an AMAZING and very compelling read, read it mid-December 2023 in a single evening), I still assumed that was more a fluke than something that might consistently be true for well-written non-fiction.

I read Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik because jumblr said the Jewish representation was really good, which was compelling to me but ultimately made me believe it would be a very character-centric story without strong plot (generally not my bag). Holy Shit, was it good. The Jewish character in a quasi-historical setting was indeed well-researched, but the story itself was so rich and tight and full to bursting with depth and well-written female characters, I really enjoyed it. (It's like a Russian Rapunzel retelling told through three complex storylines, one of which later develops some Hades/Persephone elements, G-D it's so good.)
