they do! those who connect yrz with his previous work as Vixxen anyway. it's not actually easy to relate the two because yrz dresses like a lost college student with no money and Vixxen's wardrobe is fit for literal royalty (most of it was gifts from royalty lol).

Foster AU - could you think of any scenario where Sam would get really mad at Tara? Maybe for doing something dangerous behind her back when she's in her late teens or something... how would that go?

What would Tara do that would make Sam mad? Not a lot, to be honest. The only thing that really comes to mind is Tara getting drunk. But even then, what is the context behind the action. Why would Tara drink, and why to the extent that Sam gets mad?

Her first heartbreak?

Tara feels so strongly, she falls so quickly, for that first crush, first girlfriend. She feels the heartbreak of seeing her girlfriend of six months making out with someone else, so much. She's never had the chance to work through things like this when she was a teenager, the overwhelmingness of the emotion takes her by surprise, she couldn't prepare herself for how much it hurt.

She knows Sam and Kirby have a date night tonight, so doesn't want to bother them with it. She knows they would cancel it in a heartbeat if she needed them, but Tara doesn't want to do that to them. So she keeps what happened to herself and puts a mask on her face, telling them to have fun and ushering them out the door.

She plants herself in front of her laptop and searches and searches and searches for ways to make this pain go away. None of it helps. Time and Support don't resolve the problem right now. Someone else suggests drinking.

Tara's never had alcohol before, though she's not completely unfamiliar with it. There's a part of her that knows this is stupid, but everything hurts so much and she just needs it to stop. So she drinks and drinks. Eventually, it stops hurting and she just feels good instead.

Sam is furious when they gets home. Tara's never seen her so mad, and she's not even cognizant enough to be scared of her. Even Kirby is surprised, she's never seen this side of Sam before.

Sam snatches the bottle from Tara's hand and pours it down the sink. Then she starts throwing open cupboards, searching for every last bottle and can of alcohol they may have squirrelled away and emptying it down the drain, berating Tara for being so stupid the entire time, while Kirby focuses on getting some water into the drunk girl. As the buzz starts to fade and nausea sets in, Tara begins to cry, and in an instant, she's wrapped in two sets of arms.

"Sam, what was that about," Kirby whispers, attempting not to wake the dozing girl sleeping against Sam's chest.

Sam's jaw twitches as she attempts to find the right words, a hand rubbing up and down Tara's arm. "You know about my history... and our mother, and Tara's father... we- I should never have kept alcohol in the house in the first place."

Understanding sets in.

"I feel so stupid," Sam continues. "I thought it was safe, that it would be fine because I'm ok with it now, because she never showed any interest before."

"Oh, Sam." Kirby reaches out to place a hand on hers. "This isn't your fault. You couldn't have known this would happen. We don't know what triggered this, but we'll find out, and we'll be better prepared for the future."

"What if... what if something happened, what if someone hurt her?" Sam confesses, terrified at the thought. What else could drive her girl to do this?

"Don't torture yourself with those thoughts, Sam."

This is not a review, but I wish it was. Just thoughts as I recollect on the books I've read this year.

This is a book that transformed my views on sex, partnership, and revolution. I read this book in March of 2023 and it is now December. This story (along with THE BOOKS OF JACOB and BELOVED and PIRANESI) has sat with me all year, challenging me to think about who I am in relation to my community, my government, and my body. It has made me think more about what I require (or desire) in a partner, and what I want for the people around me. While reading THE BOOKS OF JACOB, watching LOVE HAS WON: THE CULT OF MOTHER GOD, and simply watching the news, I kept asking myself the same question the book provokes… when do movements become cults? is the oppressed always doomed to become the oppressor? how do you disrupt a negative feedback loop? is it possible to start over and build something totally new?
