Idea: sew some cute little moths with scrap fabrics and sew them on holes you have on your clothes so you can keep wearing them :)

Ok solarpunks, help me out here. These are my favourite trousers, I’ve probably had them five, six years, maybe longer? They’re fraying on the thighs, as you can see. How do I, a person with a fine motor skills disability and zero handicrafts experience, go about mending this?

I was reading a book on darning. Apparently the way I darn socks isn't an "official" technique 😂 although it shares some aspects with English darning. Whatever. I hated most of the techniques in the book 🤣 but it still indirectly inspired me to try combining sashiko with square darning.
Tumblr media
This pair of pants tore a small hole in the knee ages ago. I've had them in my mending pile while I waited for inspiration to strike. Basically I ran random stitching vertical and horizontal, not trying for regular length of stitches or distance between lines, except in the very center where I picked up extra lines and then wove them from the opposite direction in a square darn.
Supplies: Olympus 100% cotton sashiko thread in navy (103), and a small metal mixing bowl for a darning "mushroom"
Work in progress, below. While the vertical lines were easy to keep straight by following the lines in the denim, horizontal proved impossible without drawing guidelines (in brown). (Not widely approved of, I'm sure, but kids super-washable Crayola fine tip markers are great for this imo. 👍 So far they've always washed out for me.)

The hole, from the reverse, because I always forget to take "before" photos:

My only regret is that I didn't put an additional piece of denim behind the hole as reinforcement. That may or may not backfire on me. However, so far I'm very please with the outcome. I washed them, everything held up, and the patch is comfortable when wearing.

what if mtmte Rodimus and tfp smokescreen are 2 ends of insecurity spectrum
Bluff because of insecurity------downplay achievements because of insecurity
Look, mtmte Rodimus is worried that his crew won't believe in him and follow his lead. His way of coping is to exaggerate himself, make himself seem bigger than he is, seem more carefree and flamboyant and fly than he probably truly feel. He hope that no one would question him if he act with so much confidence.
tfp Smokescreen on the other hand is different, he makes himself seem smaller than he is. I'm inspired by this post on him. Instead of bluff, he choose to act all very unserious about his capabilities and avoid showing off. He present himself as the rookie instead of doing Rodimus-style chosen one stuff.
Both of them are leadership matrix material and both have a lot of trauma. Both are capable younglings under the shadow of the one and only Optimus Prime. Still, it's interesting to see how they present themselves differently.

to be completely honest tho, I am somewhat relieved that zutara did not became canon because considering the creators' track record in the canon ships department, I fear that they might've end up butchering zutara as well. zutara would be ruined as long as the creators are in the picture.
I find the canon ships in atIa dysfunctional. one was poorly developed and seemed too onesided. the other felt like it was never supposed to be endgame because the very existence of it goes against the complete character arc of the other half of the ship.
the only canon romance that seemed organic to me was sidelined for the most part and forgotten in the sequel. and I think that reason it felt natural was because the creators never shoehorned it unlike their preferred ship.
it's such a shame that zutara had such a wonderful dynamic but unfortunately the main creators ignored that potential for the sake of their preferred ship.

how did you first start visibly mending? do you have any resources or recommendations for someone looking to start learning how to do it? all of your stuff looks sick btw 🫡
Sorry I started answering this and then put in drafts and completely forgot about it🤙
I had seen some cool posts about mending and then found a hole in a pair of jeans and decided to try it!
There's a lot of awesome posts in the #visible mending, #clothing repair, #sashiko and #darning tags that can give you an idea of what kinds of mending interest you, and what types of repair might be most applicable to the damage/type of clothing you're working with. @wastelesscrafts has a lot of great resources for mending too!
If you're interested in visible mending, definitely think about the purpose of the repair, since that can influence what kinds of mending you might want to try. Do you want to close a hole? Fill it and make sure it doesn't get bigger? Stabilize and strengthen a weak bit of fabric, or keep it from fraying or unraveling? Different types of mends often lend themselves to different styles.
Usually I'm closing or filling in holes in flexible-ish fabric, so I tend to do a lot of patch + hand embroidery. There is a lot of versatility in terms of look and function! I recommend looking into sashiko, a Japanese style of embroidery that is great for mends and reinforcing fabric. Patches can also be done on a sewing machine, depending on the fabrics involved.
For some repairs, particularly on knitted fabrics and places where fabric patches might be awkward, darning is another great option. There are many techniques under the darning umbrella, but they typically consist of weaving with embroidery thread or yarn over a hole or worn fabric.
If you have any knitting experience or interest, there are lots of cool knit-repair (in)visible techniques, which are also concidered darning? I don't know that much about these because knitting does not agree with my brain, but they're a great option for certain types of clothes.
Overall, there's a wide variety of cool and useful techniques, depending on what you're repairing, what vibes you want, and what techniques are most accessible to you. Go nuts! And feel free to tag me if you post your mends!! I'd love to see them :)

Ma handed me a silk shirt to repair and whilst I’m always up for a challenge I’m starting to think this one should have been an upcycle rather than repair job, because that last picture? That’s almost 3m of thread and I’m not even halfway through the tears in one direction
Edit:
Closer, but still a fair ways to go.

Should I just admit my shoes have reached the end of their natural lifespan and buy new ones? Probably. But this took 40 minutes, some glue and some embroidery floss, and now I can at least schlep them another summer.
