Playoff Implications: New York City FC Victory Over FC Cincinnati in Harrison New Jersey
New York City FC enters tonight off a big win over their tri-state rival New York Red Bulls in the Hudson River Derby after late dramatics against Inter Miami CF that saw James Sands become the hero Yankee Stadium has needed since their Sandman (Mariano Rivera) retired. We talked earlier about how Miami has been the turning point both times this season for Nick Cushing’s side this season. While…

♣♣ After Round Art ♣♣
(Please do not edit/alter. Feel free to reblog, but please do not repost. At the very least, please give me credit.)
Sports Hottie Inspired by the SPN Masquerade (Round 6)’s prompt: “Thigh highs - Jared's long legs in lacy stockings and a garter belt.”
Two other lovely and talented artists have successfully and skillfully tackled this prompt during Round 6. Please, look at their beautiful art and give the artists some love by liking/reblogging/commenting on their works: (blindswandive) (a-biting-smile)
I wished I could have joined them during the round, but I didn’t have the time. Plus they filled the prompt so well there wasn’t anything I could add to it. But, I still felt like I wanted to join in the fun afterwards. And, since it was after the round, I decided to take more creative freedom with the prompt instead of strictly following it. Instead of lacy, I went with a sports theme (that kind of partnered my cheerleader!Jared). And, instead of a garter belt I went with thigh high sock garters. Idk. I had fun.
Enjoy, if you can!♥
For more art from me please check out my [myart] tag here on Tumblr. 👇(Bonus Art Process YouTube Videos under the cut:)👇
This work would have been out sooner but I was experimenting with it. I actually made a speed up vid of the majority of my art process during the making of “Sports Hottie” and posted it on YouTube! It was both easier and more complicated than I thought it would be. I’m not going to get into all the specifics, but it was interesting seeing me art from an outsider’s pov.
You’ll have to choose your own music to play along with it because it doesn’t have audio, that would be too taxing on my ole comp. And, it’s not professional by any means, too jagged in places. But, I learned a lot and gain enough confidence to want to make another art process vid again in the future.
And now, here’s how I art:

If I think about the whole thing (research/brainstorming -> sketch -> lineart -> color/shade/lighting -> finishing touches) it probably took me about 6-7 hours in total, including when I was futzing around with the recording program. I draw slow. But, drawing is my me time. So, I’m okay with that.

Drabble thought of fergie and Niall if Niall was in the UK and went to a football match of their favorite teams playing against each other. Fergie would give him shit for it when he got back I think I love love love your stories
It was four o'clock in the morning. The familiar chime of a FaceTime call was blaring from her phone on the nightstand. She didn’t want to answer it. She wanted to go back to sleep. She had to be at the office in a few hours even though it was the weekend. Whoever it was had been calling for the past ten minutes. She figured it was someone from back home, oblivious to the time difference.
When she saw who it was, she answered immediately.
“Niall Horan! It’s four o'clock in the fucking morning.” Georgina groaned into the phone.
His face came into view. A week’s worth of stubble had started to call his face home. A bright blue Chelsea jersey was tucked nicely underneath his grey coat. A paddy cap covered up his blonde hair and a genuine smile had formed across his face.
“Fergie!” He cheered already a bit tipsy.
“Horan, look at what time it is.” She said turning on the lamp at her bedside.
His brows pulled together in confusion as her face lit up on the screen.
“Where are you?” She asked seeing people standing behind him.
Niall pressed the button to take the screen from the front camera to the back. The beautiful green pitch of Stamford Bridge and a sea of blue jerseys came into view. Her stomach instantly did a flip as envy set in. She realized where he was at.
“You did not.” She said in disbelief.
“I’m sorry I called so early. I forgot about the time difference.” Niall said feeling bad. He cleared his throat before turning the camera back to him. “Wish you were here Fergs.”
“She finally pick up?” Jamie’s voice said off camera.
Niall looked over at him, “Yeah.”
Jamie popped his head into frame. “Hey babes! Wish you were here.”
“Dave’s here too.” Niall said scanning over to his right.
Dave blew a kiss to the screen before raising up the pint he had in his hand.
Georgina just glared at the screen.
“I’ve got Spurs socks on for ya.” Dave winked playfully.
“Not gonna do her any good. I’m feeling good about this one.” Jamie said.
“You just flew back just for the game?” Georgina said feeling a little sad. She wished she had the luxury to head back to England whenever she wanted. She missed her parents.
“Jamie’s brother had tickets he wasn’t going to use.” Niall said. “Figured why not.”
“Keith there too?” She asked.
“Nah with some bird in Malibu.” Dave said.
“Figures.” She yawned.
“Alright enough buggin ya.” Niall said. “Go back to sleep Fergie.”
“I’ve got to be at work in three hours.” She sighed. “I’m recording the game to watch it when I get back home. If any of you bastards spoil it for me, you will not hear the end of it. Got it?”
“We won’t ruin it for ya Georgie.” David said saluting her.
“Promise?” She said narrowing her eyes at them.
“Cross me heart.” Niall said as the other two men agreed.
“Are you guys gonna be here for Mags–” She started to say before Niall cut her off.
“We’ll be back in LA tomorrow afternoon.” He smiled. “Just came for the game.”
“Motherfuckers.” She mumbled shaking her head.
“Go to sleep love.” Niall said.
“Hope you lose.” She said sticking out her tongue.
Niall’s infectious laugh was the last thing she heard before ending the call.
Georgina spent the entire day off the grid. She turned off her notifications for all social media. She muted her WhatsApp groups. She stayed away from her phone until she got home.
She grabbed a salad and some wine, threw on her lucky jersey, and watched the game.
They lost. 3-1.
She was fine with them losing. They hadn’t played well at all. The part she didn’t like is who they lost to and that was only because she knew the boys were going to get their digs in when she saw them.
And she was right. As soon as she walked into Jamie and Mags’ house, the jet-lagged boys lounging on the couch started singing some of Chelsea’s chants. She flipped them all off before heading outside with the girls.
She grabbed a glass of wine and caught up on the newest gossip.
“Jamie’s little sister is pregnant.” Mags said causing the rest of the girls’ eyes lit up.
“By who?” Brittany asked.
“Not her fella. Some random bloke from school.” Mags smirked.
“Pregnant at fifteen? Fuck.” Jenna shook her head. “Is their mum mad?”
“Livid.” Mags said as she noticed the boys coming into the backyard.
“How’s he handling it?” Georgina asked nodding towards Jamie.
“He’s coming off as calm but I know he’s upset.” Mags said. “That’s part of the reason they went back. Being the oldest, he feels responsible for her.”
“He and Bobby wanted to have a talk with her about everything.” Mags whispered as the boys approached.
“Poor girl.” Brittany sighed.
“Fergie, are ya mad at us?” Niall asked sitting down beside her.
“You little shits flew all the way to fucking England just to watch a derby between Spurs and Chelsea and you want to know if I’m mad?” Georgina said raising her eyebrow.
“It was Niall’s idea.” Dave said throwing the Irishman under the bus.
“Was not!” Niall whined.
“It was mine.” Jamie said as he walked over towards Georgina. “I’m sorry you missed out.”
“It’s okay.” She said standing up to give the tall man a guy.
As she wrapped her arms around him, she whispered in his ear, “Heard about Lacey. I’m sorry. If she needs anything, I’m sure Mum would be more than willing to help out. Tutoring, day care, whatever.”
Jamie didn’t say anything. He simply placed a kiss on her forehead. He squeezed her tight letting her know he appreciated the offer.
Once he let go, Jamie turned to his girlfriend and told her he was going to start cooking dinner. Mags got up to get the meat out of the refrigerator.
Georgina sat back down on her seat and found Niall pretending to listen to some bull shit story Keith was telling. She did the same. As soon as a threesome was brought up, she tuned out.
“Fergie?” Niall whispered from beside her.
Georgina turned towards him. “I’m not talking to you.”
“Why?” He asked looking worried.
“You fucking went to Stamford Bridge yesterday just to watch a football match. That’s why.” She glared at him.
“I’m sorry I really am.” Niall sighed.
“And to top it off you woke me up at the arse crack of dawn to rub it in.” She mumbled making him laugh.
“I brought you back something.” Niall said getting up and running into the house.
She rolled her eyes. “Like a gift is gonna make me feel better.”
“I knew you’d be giving him shit.” Dave said catching her attention.
“Who calls someone at three in the morning to rub it in that they are watching the Spurs Chelsea game live?” Georgina said annoyed.
“So that was my fault. I didn’t take the time difference into account. I thought you’d be happy for us.” Dave blushed. “Ya know because we had been talkin bout how important that game was the other day.”
“Happy for what? That I was missing out? That you got to see Costa score a bloody hat trick? That you lot have moved up higher on the table?” She said annoyed.
“You were pretty shit yesterday.” Dave laughed. “So it was good you weren’t there. Imagine that flight home.”
“Brittany do I have permission to beat your boyfriend?” Georgina asked making the others laugh.
“As long as I don’t see it,” Brittany said getting up to help Mags.
Niall came back with a bag in his hand. He handed it over before sitting back down.
“If this is some type of Chelsea shit, I’m burning it.” She grumbled looking at him.
“You’ll like it.” Niall said. “I promise.”
Georgina reached into the bag and pulled out a jumper. When she realized what jumper it was, her entire face lit up. She was waiting for her next paycheck because she was going to buy it for herself.
“That’s the one you were looking at the other day, right?” Niall asked shyly.
“You’re such a little shit.” She blushed running her fingers across the words on the front. “But yes it is the one I wanted.”
“Good.” Niall smiled watching her try it on.
“Does that mean you’re still mad at us?” Dave asked sounding hopeful.
“You went to a bloody Chelsea Spurs game in England without me.” She said fixing her hair. “I’m still mad.”
“You can come to the next game with us.” Dave said before turning to Niall. “Right?”
“Of course.” Niall smiled.
Georgina shook her head before taking the jumper off. She placed it back on the bag.
“You got to see Hazard attempt a bicycle kick in real life.” She said looking over at Niall. “And I had to watch a recorded version.”
Niall laughed. “Fergie! Stop. I feel bad.”
“No I’m going to complain until I feel better.” She said sticking out her tongue childishly.
“In that case, don’t tell her who else was there.” Dave playfully whispered.
“Who was there?” She asked giving both boys a look.
“Geri Ha–” Niall started to say until Georgina hit his arm.
“Ginger Spice was not fucking there.” She said with an attitude.
“She was.” Dave said handing over his phone. On the screen was a picture of the three boys with the red headed pop star.
“Shut the fuck up.” Georgina said taking a closer look at the photo.
“She’s lovely.” Dave smiled.
“You guys are fucking assholes.” Georgina whined as she gave the phone back.
“You liked Ginger or was that Sophie?” Dan asked sliding his phone back in his pocket.
“That was Soph.” Georgina sighed.
“I didn’t know you were a Spice Girl fan.” Niall said impressed.
“I was a British girl who grew up in the 90s of course I loved them.” She said offended by his question.
“Stop making her angry Niall.” Dave said hitting Niall’s arm.
“I’m not trying to.” Niall whined holding the spot that David had hit.
“Oi oi!” Brittany called from the house. “We need Fergie and Niall.”
Georgina stood up with the bag in her hand waiting for Niall to join her. As the headed to the house, he cleared his throat.
“You know why we went?” Niall asked in a hushed tone.
Georgina nodded. “Mags told us.”
“I pulled a few strings and got us on a private jet so we’d get there quicker.” He admitted shyly. “Just trying to be a good mate.”
“So for him you rent out a private jet and take him to a derby but for me you wake me up at four in the morning on a Saturday. We’ve got a great friendship.” Georgina said dryly.
His face turned a slight shade of pink. “Fergie…”
“I’m kidding Horan.” She said. “That was really sweet of you.”
“They are all taking it hard.” Niall said as they reached the back door.
“Well makes sense. After what happened to his dad, I can imagine that he feels he’s to blame.” Georgina said as Niall opened the door for her.
“He does. He shouldn’t because she knew the consequences of unprotected sex. They teach it in school.” Niall said.
“Yeah but she’s just a kid though.” Georgina sighed. “Shit happens.”
“It’s gonna be a tough nine months.” Niall said as they made their way to the kitchen.
“Tell me about it.” Georgina mumbled.
As soon as they got into the kitchen, they were put work. They were in charge of making mashed potatoes. Niall cleaned and peeled them while Georgina cut and mashed them.
“So, do you like the jumper?” Niall asked as he handed over a potato.
“I was waiting until I got paid to get it.” She said starting to cut it.
She cleared her throat, “Thanks for getting it for me.”
“Am I off the hook?” He asked shyly.
Georgina just shrugged. “Dunno.”
“What if I get us tickets to the Galaxy game next week?” He asked.
“Really?” She asked looking at him.
“Yeah I can talk to Robbie and see if there are any available.” He said nonchalantly.
“Let me just talk to my bloody famous football friend to see if we can get tickets to his game on Friday. Hopefully the box will have lobster tails and filet mignon with wine from Italy.” Georgina mocked playfully. “Maybe we’ll take the helicopter to get there.”
“You’re such a brat.” He blushed fiercely.
“Maybe you’ll remember to take me with you next time you’re headed to London.” She said with a smirk.
“I will.” He smiled. “I promise.”
Georgina leaned in close. “And if you ever wake me up at four o'clock in the morning on a Saturday again, I will hunt you down and pummel you.”
Niall laughed making her smile.
“I knew you liked it rough.” He winked making her entire body grow warm.
Georgina rolled her eyes before getting back to work. He was going to be the death of her.

Five Points: 2019 Schedule
Major League Soccer today announced the complete schedules of the 24 North American franchises set to contest the 2019 regular season.
As previously announced, the Boys in Blue will kick off the season away to Orlando City for the third time in five seasons and will host D.C. United in the Home Opener at Yankee Stadium.
There’s plenty more to go at when all the points are on the board, so let’s take a look at five key points from today’s announcement…
EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM
Start how you intend to finish.
After another season opener against the purple team from Central Florida, the Boys in Blue will return to the Bronx for a couple of marquee matchups against Wayne Rooney’s D.C. United in the Home Opener and Los Angeles Football Club’s first-ever visit to Yankee Stadium a week later.
From there, we touch road to Toronto to take on a hungry Reds side that missed out on the last season’s playoffs but hired former New York Red Bulls GM Ali Curtis to replace Tim Bezbatchenko, who has moved on to Columbus Crew.
A visit from the returning Ignacio Piatti and the Montreal Impact round out the first five in Season 5.
SUMMER SOCCER
Even with the consistent addition of expansion teams and changes to the format, one thing remains the same, Major League Soccer teams need to start hitting that stride in the summer months ahead of the run in to the playoffs if they want to lift silverware.
Slow starters will find solace in teams from the past like the 2016 Seattle Sounders who lost seven matches before the calendar hit June and then lost only six the rest of the way into the playoffs on their way to a first MLS Cup championship.
NYCFC’s summer of soccer will be staged in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium. Starting on Thursday June 6, NYC will host four consecutive home games, starting with Cincinnati’s first ever visit to NY, followed by Philadelphia Union on June 29, Seattle Sounders on July 3, and Portland Timbers on July 7th before crossing the river for the first Hudson River Derby of the season in New Jersey on July 14.
Something to note: the shifting schedule means only two regular season New York derbies. Maybe this is the season the fans get that magical playoffs matchup…
THE NEW GUYS
There will be two matchups vs. top division upstarts FC Cincinnati. The first falling on Thursday, June 6 in the Bronx, and the first-ever away trip to The Queen City coming later in the season on Saturday, August 17 at Nippert Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati.
GOING AT THE KING PEACH
If you are going for the king, you best not miss. And we do not intend to.
The Five Stripes will enter the 2019 regular season with a target on their backs having lifted the MLS Cup in 2019 on the backs of a record setting regular season that saw United’s striker Josef Martinez break the MLS scoring record.
One of the league’s most anticipated matchups since 2017 should have a bit of different tactical twist with Frank De Boer replacing the outgoing Tata Martino at the ATL helm.
City will head down south to take on the defending champs in a nationally televised matchup on Sunday, August 11th (ESPN), and we will welcome them back to the BX on Wednesday, September 25th in a match that could be vital in terms of playoff seedings.
DECISION DAY
MLS introduced a new playoff format shortly after the 2018 playoffs, and the tradition of “Decision Day” should only continue to grow in stature with the new changes.
A 14 team, fixed-bracket, single-elimination format with the higher seed hosting every match will commence on October 9th. The playoffs will also conclude earlier than in previous years, with the entirety of the competition being played out between the October and November FIFA international breaks.
Only one team per conference will be given a first-round bye – with the idea being to emphasize regular season excellence even more.
With no reseeding as well, home field advantage will be of paramount importance heading into the post-season.
Let’s get it! #ForTheCity

#VillaForever | David Villa Departs New York City Football Club
Bringing the curtain down on an incredible four years with New York City Football Club, David Villa will leave NYCFC at the end of his contract on December 31, 2018.
The Club’s first-ever player and Captain will announce the next destination in his glittering playing career in the coming days.
The Spanish World Cup winner, who departs after scoring 80 goals in 124 MLS appearances for the Boys in Blue, paid tribute to the Club and the supporters.
Villa told NYCFC.com: “I can only say thank you, thank you to everybody. First, to City Football Group that gave me the opportunity to come here. To NYCFC and MLS for accepting me. To everybody at the Club who helped me day-by-day.
“Thank you to the people in the offices, the people working with the team and the coaches and staff. Thank you to my teammates - without them it would have been impossible to be successful. Thank you to the people working in the media that always gave me the respect and the love.
“Obviously, our fans. I remember the first day I showed the jersey and the supporters were there. I would have liked to give the supporters the MLS Cup, but I don’t have any doubts that in the next years the Club will get it for sure.
“My experience here was amazing. It gave me everything as a soccer player, as a person, and as a family man. I’ll always remember this experience with love. My heart is here and I’m an NYCFC supporter forever.”
Villa was announced as New York City FC’s first-ever signing on June 2, 2014, joining from Atletico Madrid. Already Spain’s leading goal scorer, a World Cup winner and a European champion, Villa joined NYCFC with the reputation as one of this generation’s most devastating strikers, yet he arrived like a man with a point to prove.
Villa scored goals from the start in MLS, netting NYCFC’s first Yankee Stadium goal in the historic home opening win vs. New England Revolution, before going on to accumulate 18 in his debut season.
Vice Chairman of New York City FC Marty Edelman said, “David Villa encompasses the values that we have here at New York City FC. The impact he has had on not only this Club, but in this City, cannot be measured in just goals or assists.
“We thank David for helping us build NYCFC and wish him the very best moving forward. It’s been a memorable and historic first four seasons with David at the helm. We are proud of the milestones we’ve reached together which have set the foundation for the Club which will continue to grow for years to come.”
Sporting Director Claudio Reyna said: “David has been an incredible ambassador and Captain to this Club since the moment we signed him. His professionalism and leadership helped us through the challenges that a new team faces when they come into the league. He’s represented New York City FC tremendously both on and off the pitch and has been a real leader for this football club.
“I truly believe that David will be remembered as one of the best players to ever play in MLS. He will forever be a legend amongst all of our wonderful supporters and everyone here at NYCFC wishes David nothing but the best in the remainder of his career. He will always be a part of NYCFC.”
His first season was just a taste of what was to come as he scored 23 goals in his second season, leading the team to the MLS Playoffs for the first time and winning the 2016 MLS MVP award.
In 2017, he scored 24 goals across all competitions, despite playing in fewer games than the previous season, as NYCFC finished runners-up in the Supporters’ Shield race – a tally which included his first-ever hat-trick for the Club in the unforgettable 3-2 Hudson River Derby win over Red Bulls in the Bronx.
This incredible form earned David a recall to the Spanish national team in September 2017 and he received a hero’s reception when he won his 98th international cap vs. Italy, three years after his last appearance for La Roja.
In what proved to be his final year at NYCFC, David overcame various injuries to lead the team in goals, with 15 scored in 23 starts, proving his enduring quality as he helped City to a third-straight postseason campaign scoring in the Knockout Round win over Philadelphia.
One of the highlights of the year arrived in April vs. FC Dallas when he scored the 400th goal of his career, elevating Villa into the pantheon of greats to have netted over 400 goals at the highest level.
A dedicated contributor to City in the Community programs, a man who carried the team on his back as Captain on countless occasions, and now a New Yorker for life, David leaves NYCFC with the gratitude and the warmest wishes from everyone affiliated with the Club.
It’s not goodbye, but see you soon... #VillaForever
We’ll be holding a special farewell event for City Members to pay tribute to David in New York City on Monday December 3. Members, keep watching your inboxes for information on how to attend and show your love to David on social media using the #VillaForever hashtag.

Jurgen Klopp has transformed Liverpool since ending his sabbatical in October 2015. Under his leadership, the Reds have reached two major European club finals – in which they finished runners-up to Sevilla (2016 Europa League) and Real Madrid (2018 Champions League) – as well as playing some of the most scintillating football we’ve seen during that time. This season has seen Liverpool emerge as Manchester City’s greatest championship threat. The 18-time English champions are now forged in Klopp’s image after he initially inherited a squad designed by his predecessors. Though some remain, those who have bought into his vision, others have fallen by the wayside and left for new adventures. Among them are big personalities desperate for a new challenge, as well as those who waited for an opportunity they never received. Below is a list of players who have permanently left Liverpool under Klopp’s watch and what happened next. 1. Christian BentekeSeason: 2016/17 Club joined: Crystal Palace Transfer fee: £27m Games under Klopp: 36 Benteke’s time at Liverpool can be described as a wasted opportunity. His reputation on arrival had and has never been higher, but the Belgian marksman couldn’t replicate his Aston Villa form and is rarely spoken about at Anfield these days. A move was best for all parties, Klopp had started to reinvigorate the Reds attack minus Benteke, who moved south to Crystal Palace, where despite an impressive first season he now continues to struggle for goals. 2. Jordon IbeSeason: 2016/17 Club joined: Bournemouth Transfer fee: £15m Games under Klopp: 33 So much was expected of Jordon Ibe. Many Liverpool supporters felt he was the perfect successor to Raheem Sterling, who had departed to Manchester City weeks before Klopp’s arrival. His new boss was prepared to give the young English winger a chance but it never quite worked out. With regular playing time even more scarce, Ibe became Bournemouth’s then-most expensive acquisition and it is where he plays his football today, albeit mostly in an impact-sub capacity. 3. Joe AllenSeason: 2016/17 Club joined: Stoke City Transfer fee: £13m Games under Klopp: 33 Affectionately dubbed the “Welsh Xavi”, there was a time when Joe Allen’s name was rarely missing from Liverpool’s midfield. His greatest run in the side came under Brendan Rodgers, under whom he previously worked at Swansea City. Klopp, appreciative of technically gifted midfielders, never saw the best of Allen, who soon departed from Stoke City where he continues to ply his trade in the Championship with five goals and four assists for the 14th-placed Potters. 4. Martin SkrtelSeason: 2016/17 Club joined: Fenerbahce Transfer fee: £5m Games under Klopp: 18 One of Liverpool’s longest-serving players when Klopp arrived, Skrtel’s best days were firmly behind him. Sparingly used by the German tactical, he’d leave for present club Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2016. He is regular starter with the Turkish giants but yet to win a major honour. 5. Luis Alberto Season: 2016/17 Club joined: Lazio Transfer fee: £4m Games under Klopp: 0 Luis Alberto never really got his Liverpool career going and wasn’t even used by Klopp before moving to The Eternal City. His subsequent performances for Lazio suggests potentially one that got away. Last season, he scored 11 goals in Serie A as Lazio finished fifth. 6. Tiago IloriSeason: 2016/17 (winter) Club joined: Reading Transfer fee:£3.75m Games under Klopp: 3 Another player who joined Liverpool young but never genuinely broke through, Tiago Ilori would enjoy a number of loans spells prior to making his senior debut under Klopp but there was never any inkling of a long-term future. He’s since found a home at Reading, whom he joined in January 2017, but is linked with a return to Sporting Lisbon. 7. Brad SmithSeason: 2016/17 Club joined: Bournemouth Transfer fee: £3m Games under Klopp: 10 Brad Smith never really threatened to be Liverpool’s first choice left-back under Klopp, before joining Bournemouth where he played a handful of games prior to signing for MLS outfit Seattle Sounders. 8. João Carlos TeixeiraSeason: 2016/17 Club joined: FC Porto Transfer fee: Free Games under Klopp: 7 Teixeira, similar to compatriot Ilori, would toil in the loan system before leaving the Reds without having firmly established himself. The native of Braga would join FC Porto, who loaned him out to his hometown club before he signed for Vitória Guimarães last summer. 9. Kolo TouréSeason: 2016/17 Club joined: Celtic Transfer fee: Free Games under Klopp: 24 Kolo Touré played somewhat of a mentor role in Brendan Rodgers’ final months as Liverpool boss. It wouldn’t be the case under the incoming Klopp, though the German was happy to have the Premier League winner around. Touré, keen for playing time as his career started to wind down, would reunite with Rodgers at Celtic before transitioning into a coach. In Glasgow, the former Arsenal defender became an ‘Invincible’ for the second time in his career as Celtic won the 2016/17 Scottish Premiership title without losing a single game. 10. Mario Balotelli Season: 2016/17 Club joined: Nice Transfer fee: Free Games under Klopp: 0 Balotelli’s nonchalance was never going to mix with Klopp’s discipline given how crucial work rate and pressing are to him. The enigmatic Italian marksman departed under a cloud but has since enjoyed his best football in years at Nice, though that particular relationship seems to be over. 11. Mamadou SakhoSeason: 2017/18 Club joined: Crystal Palace Transfer fee: £26m Games under Klopp: 29 Ill-disciple on pre-season duty ultimately ended Sakho’s Liverpool career. At one point he looked settled under Klopp, but in the end tardiness supposedly meant he the former PSG captain could no longer be trusted. Crystal Palace would come to Sakho’s rescue. There, he enjoys a key role under former Reds boss Roy Hodgson. 12. Lucas LeivaSeason: 2017/18 Club joined: Lazio Transfer fee: £5m Games under Klopp: 65 For much of his time in a Liverpool jersey, Lucas was maligned for failing to live up to initial performances as he transitioned from CAM to defensive midfielder. This ultimately subsided and the Brazilian midfielder left Anfield with to some degree of goodwill. His experience was routinely tapped into by Klopp, as he made over 50 appearances under the German before signing for Lazio. 13. Kevin StewartSeason: 2017/18 Club joined: Hull City Transfer fee: £4m Games under Klopp: 20 Kevin Stewart joined Liverpool from Tottenham Hotspur but never really made the grade despite making a handful of appearances during Klopp’s stewardship. He would subsequently be loaned out – to Cheltenham Town, Burton Albion and Swindon Town – before leaving Anfield permanently for Hull City 14. Andre WisdomSeason: 2017/18 Club joined: Derby County Transfer fee: £2m Games under Klopp: 0 Before joining Derby County in 2017, thus ending a nine-year association with Liverpool, the Leeds-born defender celebrated winning the Austrian championship with Red Bull Salzburg. Once seen as having great potential, Wisdom never got a look-in under Klopp. These days, he’s used intermittently on either side of Frank Lampard’s defence. 15. Philippe Coutinho Season: 2017/18 (winter) Club joined: Barcelona Transfer fee: £142m Games under Klopp: 89 You’ve heard of this one, right? He went on to become Liverpool’s record sale by some distance as Coutinho’s protracted transfer nearly doubled what Barcelona paid for Luis Suarez, his former Reds teammate. Since reuniting with the Uruguayan marksman, Coutinho is yet to find a home in the Barcelona starting line-up as Ernesto Valverde has been reluctant to use him in midfield. He has been benched for several league games at the time of writing and Barcelona were recently forced to publicly reassure Coutinho of his future at the club. 16. Danny WardSeason: 2018/19 Club joined: Leicester City Transfer fee: £12.5m Games under Klopp: 3 Danny Ward served as Liverpool’s third-choice goalkeeper before looking for pastures new. He’d settle for Leicester City last summer but is yet to make a league appearance under Claude Puel, who has exclusively used him in the EFL Cup. 17. Ragnar KlavanSeason: 2017/18 Club joined: Cagliari Transfer fee: £2m Games under Klopp: 53 Signed and sold by Klopp. The much-travelled Estonian central defender served his purpose, injecting some experience in Liverpool’s backline, and in the process became a cult hero among the club’s vocal support for his inexplicable bursts of unnecessary (and endearingly clumsy) flair. The King Klavan – GOALS, SKILLS & ASSISTS – 2017/18 @ReadLiverpoolFC pic.twitter.com/rY9OdCYRUd — Anything Liverpool (@AnythingLFC_) August 17, 2018 Klavan can today be found representing Serie A side Cagliari. 18. Jon FlanaganSeason: 2018/19 Club joined: Rangers Transfer fee: Free Games under Klopp: 9 Flanagan’s time at Liverpool ended in disgrace when he pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend. However, former teammate and captain Steven Gerrard would offer him a second chance when he brought him to Rangers last summer. He has only featured in one of the club’s last six league outings, a one-minute cameo in their emotional 1-0 win over city rivals Celtic at Ibrox. 19. Jordan WilliamsSeason: 2018/19 Club joined: Rochdale Transfer fee: Free Games under Klopp: 0 Despite coming through Liverpool’s academy, Jordan Williams made just one appearance for his boyhood club. He was never on Klopp’s radar prior to joining Rochdale, where his career has been resuscitated. 20. Emre Can Season: 2018/19 Club joined: Juventus Transfer fee: £14m Games under Klopp: 116 Can’s final season with Liverpool was a frustrating one for all those concerned. He was trusted and given regular game time by Klopp despite running down his contract as Liverpool refused to include a buy-out clause in any extension. In the end, as expected, Can opted to join Italian powerhouse Juventus, where despite a promising start he’s now looking to rediscover his groove following a period on the sidelines. Bulls’ SA ‘hat-trick’ sends out clear signal
Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer
Cape Town – Still early days, but mark the Bulls down firmly as forceful contenders for the SA conference honours in Super Rugby this year … and while you shouldn’t whisper it too loudly, perhaps even a bit more than that.
Certainly the Loftus-based side have made a booming statement after reaching their own quarter mark in the 16-match ordinary season programme, considering their glowing achievements against all three compatriots in the group.
Although they slipped up on a greasy day in Buenos Aires against other conference outfit the Jaguares in round two, Pote Human’s charges can now claim the scalps of all of the other trio: and by noticeably gaping margins each time.
The Sharks were simply the latest SA team to feel the weight of resurgence of the three-time former champions on Saturday, leaving Pretoria with tails firmly between their legs in a 37-14 defeat.
That’s a 23-point margin, and remember that the Stormers were blitzed by 37 points at the very same Loftus on the opening weekend.
In between, the Bulls won another derby that many would have expected to be tighter, when they drove down the highway to Johannesburg and saw off 2018 losing finalists the Lions by 18 points – again a result showing plenty of daylight between the protagonists on the scoreboard.
On that basis alone, the blue-jerseyed outfit have established both a mathematical and mental foothold against all other conference comers: they now lead the Sharks by two points at the top of the group and lie second only to the unbeaten Crusaders overall.
It seems as good a time as any to have a bye – three all-South African affairs in four is a guaranteed recipe for bumps and bruises – and that’s what they’ll enjoy next weekend when the SA roster is fairly thin (the Sharks will also be on an “off” week to nurse their two-game losing-streak wounds).
Once they come back refreshed in a fortnight, the Bulls will fancy their chances of another triumph as the Chiefs will visit their Highveld stronghold: this is a New Zealand side unusually punch-drunk at this point, having lost all four matches so far and languishing at the bottom of the overall table.
The latest Bulls showing was generally more industrially-earned than consistently awe-inspiring – most local derbies are – but they were still rich value for their victory and again produced enough moments of attacking zest, often from deep, to fill their long-suffering faithful with renewed hope of a proper renaissance.
Their players, young and old, work for each other determinedly and as Springbok World Cup-winning flyhalf legend Joel Stransky pointed out in SuperSport commentary, they dominated the “big moments” … with their grand-dad figure Schalk Brits charismatically to the fore.
Vanquished Sharks skipper and scrumhalf Louis Schreuder admitted afterwards that his side “didn’t respect the ball” (they had enough of it at times) but promised a “hard look at ourselves (and) a regroup”.
They made a plethora of elementary errors or disciplinary gaffes and that is ill-advised when you are up against the smooth-striking boot of Handre Pollard, who amassed another big haul of 22 points.
The Sharks still seem fairly clueless at adapting when their renowned physicality is stopped in its tracks by equally robust characters like Jason Jenkins and Duane Vermeulen, while the Bulls’ yeoman scrummaging effort and the hunger out wide of Jesse Kriel, Rosko Specman and Warrick Gelant also played pivotal roles in the triumph.
In the earlier SA kick-off, the Lions struck back pleasingly enough this weekend from last week’s home humbling – especially considering coach Swys de Bruin’s gamble on plenty of rookies in his starting XV – by beating the Jaguares 47-39.
It would have been even more convincing on paper had the hosts not fallen apart organisationally in the last quarter of an hour, when several seniors were yanked off at 47-13 and the Lions even contrived to lose their bonus point because the Argentineans, lacklustre before the break, hauled back the final try count to 7-6.
But at least for the first hour or so, we got a highly encouraging glimpse of the franchise’s productive development structures – 20-year-old midfield wunderkind Wandisile Simelane buzzed most times that he touched the ball.
He earned the following tribute from Nick Mallett: “(He) showed his dexterity with his hands … something we need much more of in South African backline play.”
Nevertheless, the Lions will need to tighten up in several areas when they entertain Dave Wessels’ unbeaten Melbourne Rebels next Saturday.
Next weekend’s fixtures (home teams first, all kick-offs SA time):
Friday, March 15
Chiefs v Hurricanes – 08:35
Brumbies v Waratahs – 10:45
Stormers v Jaguares – 19:10
Saturday, March 16
Sunwolves v Reds – 06:15
Highlanders v Crusaders – 08:35
Lions v Rebels – 15:05
Byes: Sharks, Bulls, Blues

Hudson River Derby: NYCFC Triumphs Over Red Bulls
The heated rivalry for New York dominance between the two clubs is always seen and heard throughout the NYC area. Despite the Red Bulls playing in Harrison, New Jersey. The rivalry formed when MLS was finally able to plant roots in New York’s five boroughs. When they announced a new team to the area, you saw the state split on who they will support. The sides have played 28 times with the Red…

Luis Robles: NY Derby with huge implications is "great for the league"
Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports
August 21, 20186:43PM EDT
HANOVER, N.J. – It is a new era for the New York Derby, one that sees a shift not in terms of power, but rather of focus ahead of the third and final regular season meeting between New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls Wednesday (7 pm ET | FS1 — Full TV & streaming info) at Yankee Stadium.
A rivalry built originally on geographical banter and the rise of the noisy neighbors in the then-upstart NYCFC, the derby is now just as important for the on-the-field ramifications as it is for all the buzz that surrounds these two teams when they meet. The Red Bulls sit in second place in the Eastern Conference on 48 points, one place and one point ahead of NYCFC in the standings.
This match, which kicks off Heineken Rivalry Week, might well have shockwaves that resonate for months down the road. Wednesday’s match is more than bragging or territorial rights: Supporters’ Shield ramifications as well as seeding for the playoffs are at play.
“I think it’s not only great for the rivalry, but it’s great for the league when you see that each game not only has implications on territory, status within that rivalry, but also playoff seeding, Supporters’ Shield and they’ve had a good year; we’ve had a good year,” Red Bulls goalkeeper and captain Luis Robles said on Tuesday following training.
“We know it’s a rubber match. But with that being said, beyond the rivalry, we know these games have huge meaning when it comes to the Supporters’ Shield.”
NYCFC, who beat the Red Bulls 1-0 at Yankee Stadium in the last derby meeting on July 8, are limping into this match, likely down three starters to injury and suspension.
They have just one win in their last four matches after arguably having the best month of July in the league.
The Red Bulls come in relatively hot, 5-1-1 since their loss at NYCFC. City has seen a dip in form in recent weeks under Dome Torrent, who replaced Patrick Vieira as the team’s coach midseason.
Red Bulls coach Chris Armas expects Wednesday night’s host to approach the match in similar fashion to their meeting in July. In that match, NYCFC went very direct and forced the Red Bulls to be narrow in the final third, a frustrating match for the club from New Jersey.
“You see how they use their outside backs a bit, some of the interior play the way you see Man City do it sometimes. At times, a little less possession that I have seen against us. They completely changed their gameplan going to 25 percent or whatever it was of long balls instead of their average of 11 or 12 [percent],” Armas said. “They always have a plan so with Patrick, you know it seemed like more of a calculated pattern play and positional play and even how they used their wide guys, are they getting width from the wingers or outside backs, or is it even a little bit of both. So there is a lot going on with Domenec, so yeah, it will be fun to see how it plays out.”
The Red Bulls, who managed four points from their swing through Chicago and Vancouver, are also keenly aware that the home side on Wednesday night are a league-best 10-0-2 at home this year.
And while the Red Bulls are second to Atlanta United with six road wins this year, they are anticipating yet another derby battle, this time with much more on the line than just banter and bragging rights.
“I think that they’ve done absolutely amazing at home. That’s their strength this year, more than anything so now that they’re playing us, of course, they’re going to be on for it,” Armas said. “It’s just one of those games that we have to go in there, we can’t be naïve about it so you know go out there, get an early goal, try to press them the way that we play and be combative about the whole game, so we’re going there for nothing less than three points.”

ARRIVE AT NEW YORK’S HUDSON RIVER DERBY THIS SUMMER WITH A LUXURY LIMOUSINE SERVICE
Many New Yorkers would be surprised to learn that soccer has a long and storied history in the tri-state region. In 1971, the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL) was born and in their fourth season they signed the world’s best player at the time – Brazilian-born Pele. The addition of Pele in 1974, Giorgio Chinaglia in 1976 and Franz Beckenbauer in 1983 were seminal moments unprecedented in U.S. soccer history. Finally, New York had a team worthy of its stature. Experience this sporting event the right way by using Delux Worldwide Transportation’s luxury limousine service.
Fast forward almost fifty-years and the New York professional soccer scene is now dominated by the New York Red Bulls and New York City F.C. of Major League Soccer (MLS), making fan allegiance decisions tough for New York soccer fans. With the MLS now hitting full-swing in the summer months, New Yorkers have the opportunity to watch their favorite team or visit both stadiums. Each stadium and team are unique, and when planning a memorable experience remember to book a luxury limousine service for your transportation needs. Delux Worldwide Transportation’s limo service in Long Island also services all five NYC boroughs and Northern New Jersey.
New York Red Bulls
The Red Bulls have formed ahead of the 1996 MLS season as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and played their games at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford. In 2006, it was announced that energy drink conglomerate Red Bull was acquiring the team and renaming it, The New York Red Bulls. Now the team plays in Red Bull Arena, which opened in Harrison, New Jersey in 2010. Public transportation to Red Bull Arena is not always efficient, especially for those coming from the outer boroughs, Long Island or parts of New Jersey. The arena holds an estimated 25,000 spectators and features extensive outdoor tailgating areas that match the vibe of a European beer hall with great craft beer selections and a live band before games. Remember always to utilize a luxury limousine service to professionally and efficiently ensure your transportation to and from sporting events when enjoying alcohol.
New York City FC
New York City FC began to play in 2015 as the second MLS team in the New York Metropolitan area. They were founded in partnership between the Yankees and Manchester City’s City Football Group, playing their games at Yankee Stadium and on TV on the YES network. As mentioned in a previous post about Yankee Stadium, its vastly improved amenities make it a perfect destination for a business outing via a New York corporate car service.
New York City FC is commonly thought to be an ascendant team, with former Barcelona striker David Villa continuing his goal-scoring dominance in the MLS. But, while the Red Bulls have faltered slightly in the standings over the last couple of years, each edition of the Hudson River Derby provides the best highlights of New York professional soccer.
Conclusion:
Our luxury limousine service offers reliable, affordable and friendly service in state-of-the-art vehicles. Choose from a fleet of sedans, luxury vans, limousines and SUVs. Call today or book online. 516-883-1900.

20 THOUGHTS: 2018, The Sequel
2018. Richmond are reigning premiers. The Bulldogs are no longer reigning premiers.
What a bizarre collection of twelve words you would have never thought possible.
Who would be so brave to think we can’t have another drought broken, an expansion side’s first, or perhaps another fairy-tale for a side coming from outside the eight to be a flag contender within a year?
The more things change, the more things stay the same. The same coaches under the pump this time last year are still under the pump, messer Hardiwck aside. Umpiring will be umpiring, the MRP will be the MRP, and congestion will no doubt come up before Easter.
Strap yourselves in, another six months of that all too familiar love-hate insomnia kicks off once again.
1. Where to start? Well James Hird coming back to footy is an interesting one. Sure he had some failures as a senior coach, some bigger than others, but no-one can question that he would be astute in the right position. But the idea that it would be controversial, that it needs AFL approval, that its bad PR, please! If the United States is ok with JAL flying direct from Tokyo to Honolulu given that flight path’s history, we can be ok with James Hird back in football I think.
2. The big story of the year, the re-emergence of Fremantle for mine. They can get at least nine wins at their new Optus Stadium, two of which will be in Derbies. They finished first after the home and away as soon as two years ago, yes the wheels fall off soon thereafter, but with a fit superstar captain, a forward line of McCarthy, Walters, Ballantyne, Bennell, Matera, a backline of Johnson, Hamling, Pearce, Wilson, Spurr, Sandilands down to Fyfe, Neale, Mundy, the Hill brothers, plus superstar kids Blakely, Logue, Brayshaw and Cerra, finals are certainly doable and with an ounce of luck a top four show. Wilson will prove to be a great get and don’t forget, Ross Lyon can definitely coach a top four team.
3. Essendon and Port Adelaide are the off-season big spenders, bringing in a plethora of mature aged recruits. For the Bombers, it will help, they are still on the rise, but it’s not flag material just yet. For Port, as I’ll touch on shortly, they will go up, they should have won a final last year and then been in a position to have a crack at GWS for a spot in a Prelim, they are going to be dangerous.
4. The Cats though, got the Son of God back, but what does it do for them? Not tonnes. Dangerfield, Ablett and Selwood will win them many games, but they can’t all have 35 and kick 3, the backline needs a chiro, the forward line has a 1990s full forward stuck in a 2018 team, too many question marks. If they didn’t have Danger, it's a bottom ten team.
5. The new Optus Stadium looks an absolute treat. But alas, all the fixtures this year are either afternoon or twilight, we won’t get the spectacle of a big night game, why, because it would be too late into Melbourne. We can stay up past 10pm on a Saturday if it means Perth gets a big evening game, surely?
6. How’s bout The Footy Show? Oh dear. As popular as Barnaby Joyce at a family values workshop, or an office singles mixer, or a Mardi Gras party.
7. Tom Lynch, my pick, he heads to Collingwood. Not a biased view, but would you be content to put your only key forward talent down back in 2018, leaving an injury-prone All-Australian CHB and an American experiment as your only inside 50 targets if you had confidence in securing one of the best tall forwards in the game for 2019? Yes. The Pies have massive cap room, Pendlebury, Treloar and Sidebottom are all on less than market value, they stop paying Heath Shaw this year as well.
8. Robbo watch, his Top 50, Daniher at 8, Kennedy at 10, have there been too many Melbourne Bitters for Robbo over Summer? Here we go again, another six months of sloppiness?
9. He had Dangerfield at one, Martin at two. Who he had at three will handsomely be on top by year’s end – Fyfe is the best when fit.
10. Carlton play finals in 2019 - Cripps, Curnow, Dow, O'Brien, Petrevski-Seton, McKay, Garlett, Marchbank, Weitering, Pickett - we believe Bolton can coach, so 2019, September, Carlton, bank it.
11. Lance Franklin will surpass 900 goals this year, age 31. Dunstall did the same thing as a 30 year old, finished with 1254, third all time. Buddy is a Hall of Fame Legend lock, arguably the best many of us will ever see.
12. Can't have State of Origin, can't save Tasmanian football, but we can junket International Rules to the New York Red Bulls stadium sometime in late Spring? AFL against Gaelic in a sport neither plays in the backwaters of New Jersey - if Trump was AFL CEO then that sounds like something he would do. Pull your head in Gil!
13. Melbourne and St Kilda. Should both play finals. But are either Goodwin or Richardson the next Clarkson and able to take a team the whole way? Not yet convinced. Watch Ross Lyon and the Dockers scoot past one, maybe both.
14. Giants are the big ticket this year and this columns likens their plight to the familiar children’s fable Goldilocks. The eighteenth side is kinda like the Three Bears’ porridge, 2016 was too hot, 2017 was too cold, 2018 will be just right.
15. Where are Hawthorn this year? O'Meara hurts opposition when he isn’t hurt himself, Mitchell doesn't really hurt for the amount of pill he accumulates, how many other real weapons do they have? Lucky they have Clarko, that will probably account for half their wins alone.
16. Aside from Hawthorn's third flag, most premiers are boosted by getting off to great starts. The fixture heavily influences that. It’s what quells Collingwood's overdue rise back up the ladder, they'll be lucky to be 3-3 at best, but Port should be at worst 5-2 going into the Round 8 Showdown with the Suns in China to follow. Get on.
17. Another one on the AFL… why are we playing the AFLW Grand Final squeezed into a lunchtime in the middle of Round One when had they moved their season one week earlier the pinnacle match could have had a clear weekend from the men’s game, all to themselves? One thing to make a dumb decision but especially at the expense of an outstanding alternative?
18. Brownlow pick? Well it has to be Fyfe. If you want a smokey, Matt Crouch at $34 provides lovely value.
19. Rising Star? Andrew Brayshaw ($15) from Paddy Dow ($9) in a close one-two finish. Some value would be Sam Murray ($21) at Collingwood, should play 22 games and will average 20 touches a week.
20. And the final eight, here’s what we’ve settled on: GWS, Adelaide, Richmond, Port Adelaide, Fremantle, Essendon, Sydney, Geelong

Your Wednesday Morning Roundup
The Flyers are back. Officially.
Their 51st year (50th of playing hockey if you take away the 2004-05 lockout year) kicks off tonight in San Jose against the Sharks. That game is scheduled to start at 10:30 on NBCSN. But it’ll probably be around 11 since home openers mean delayed starts. Pack up on Red Bull or coffee to go alongside your cold ones.
We’ve heard about the heralded young group of defensemen the Flyers have for a couple of years now, and most of them are finally up with the big club, for at least some time. Robert Hagg, Sam Morin, and Travis Sanheim join Ivan Provorov and Shayne Gostisbehere in a core that can last the team for maybe the next decade.
But similar to the Phillies this summer, will all of the youngsters play at the same time? Morin and Sanheim were fighting for a roster spot until Ghost got hurt in the third period of the preseason finale on Sunday. Will Ghost even dress tonight? It sounds like he will.
I would think Radko Gudas would be a lock in the starting lineup, but what about Brandon Manning and ALTERNATE CAPTAIN ANDREW MACDONALD? I’m pretty sure Dave Hakstol won’t bench either guy, but he should.
Yesterday’s defensive pairings at practice were interesting, and odds are they won’t be the same come today or tonight.
Besides the defense, I’m really excited to see what Nolan Patrick can do. The second overall pick centered the second line at yesterday’s practice. Is he top six worthy?
Either way, hockey is back.
The Roundup:
Continuing with the Flyers, the players gave the final alternate captain role to Valtteri Filppula and Andrew MacDonald. That Andrew MacDonald. Filppula will be the alternate captain for home games, while AMac assumes the role for road games.
When former Flyer Kerry Huffman saw Ivan Provorov for the first time in a junior hockey program, he knew he’d be something special:
He didn’t come out of nowhere. He didn’t spring on the scene. He has stood out every step of the way.
“A lot of it, too, was not just his game, but how the other kids looked at him,” said Huffman, now an assistant coach with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers’ AHL affiliate. “He had a certain way he carried himself. In the summers when I would see him, he would come in to do skill sessions. He just had a presence to him that jumps out at you when you see it.
“Obviously, when you see a 14-year-old defenseman, you never know what’s going to happen, where they’re going to go or what they’re going to turn into. But he had a lot of raw, innate ability that certainly the other kids don’t have. There are a lot of quality kids who have gone through that program — maybe 10 Division I defensemen. He was just head and shoulders above everybody.”
After clearing waivers, the team officially loaned Matt Read to Lehigh Valley.
The rookies also got new numbers:

Sixers center Joel Embiid was heavily discussed today. He ran. He played tennis. He also got a Rocky video of him.
Embiid won’t play in tonight’s preseason opener against Memphis. Neither will Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot (knee) or Dario Saric (rest). Amir Johnson (right ankle sprain) is questionable for tonight. But we will see Ben Simmons.
Former Eagle Brian Dawkins spoke to the team yesterday.
Over the course of his talk, Dawkins stressed the importance of hard work, and the responsibilities that come along with being a professional athlete, especially in a city as passionate as Philadelphia. He pointed to parallels between the rise of the Eagles to perennial Super Bowl contender during the early 2000s, and the current state of the Sixers.
“To me, there are some similarities, what you guys are starting up right now,” Dawkins told the Sixers players seated before him. He then issued a challenge to the group.
“Going forward, it’s up to you. It’s up to you then to decide what direction this is going to be.”

The Eagles continue to get set for the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Even though Carson Wentz doesn’t have big numbers, he’s avoiding the negative plays in his second season with the team, from Zach Berman of the Inquirer:
The caution flag to wave is that it’s still early. At this point last season, Wentz had only one interception. The Eagles were also 3-1. But when the interceptions started coming more frequently, the wins came less frequently. Eleven of his 14 interceptions last season came in losses. In 20 career games, the Eagles are 3-8 when Wentz throws an interception. They’re 7-2 when he doesn’t throw an interception.
No one can accuse Wentz of playing conservatively, either. He’s willing to throw down field and doesn’t always attempt high-percentage passes. His success comes when he demonstrates smart quarterbacking, finding the balance between being too aggressive and too careful.
“I think every quarterback has a number where everybody wants to be single-digit interceptions when the season’s over and certainly have a lot of touchdown passes,” Reich said. “And one thing about Carson, I know he’s never going to play scared. That’s what I love. He still has that aggressive mind-set and that aggressive nature to look down field, but yet the decision making has been excellent.”
Jim Schwartz is searching for answers to the team’s fourth quarter struggles.
Rasul Douglas was one of those players that struggled throughout the game on Sunday. He hopes he can bounce back in a big way this week.
The team added cornerback D.J. Killings to their practice squad after promoting Justin Hamilton to the active roster. They still have an open spot after wide receiver Bryce Treggs signed with the Cleveland Browns.
Jake Elliott’s cannon of a kick against the Giants has turned him into an Eagles legend.
Colin Cowherd called Philly fans “dumb”, but the team clapped right back on Twitter.

The Phillies will have a low payroll in 2018, according to president Andy MacPhail:
But reaching the turning point will not lead immediately to contention. Wins and losses will carry more weight in 2018, but the team, MacPhail said, still expects “a relatively low payroll.” The Phillies will instead apply financial resources to other areas such as stadium upgrades, a sports science staff, and boosts to their analytics department. So, there will be a new playing surface and public address system next season at Citizens Bank Park.
A true turning point will come once the Phillies are willing — they are already able — to compete in free agency.
“We’ve already talked to ownership about it and explained to them why [the payroll will be low in 2018],” MacPhail said. “They did not react extraordinarily well in the beginning. Ultimately, they’re OK with it with one proviso: that if an opportunity presents itself, we do not exclude it. They understand the program.”

In other sports news, after a slow start, the Yankees got hot in the AL Wild Card game and beat the Twins 8-4. They’ll play Cleveland in the ALDS beginning on Thursday.
Brewers prospect Bubba Derby was at the country music concert in Las Vegas that was the biggest mass shooting in the country’s history. He escaped and told his story:
“We didn’t know where the shots were coming from,” said Derby, who was “about 100 yards” in front of the stage when the shooting began. “It sounded like they were on top of us. Everyone got down. We tried to get as low to the ground as possible. The first thing I did was look for my family.
“I turned around and looked to find my aunt, and I’ll never forget the look on her face. We made eye contact and we thought we were about to die. You could hear the bullets ricocheting. It’s one of those moments where you just want to try to get out of there.”
The NBA is changing the format to their All-Star Game. Two captains, one from each conference, will select their team from a pool of players. Just like what the NHL did a few years ago.
Former Flyer Ville Leino has retired from pro hockey. But he’s still making money, thanks to Buffalo:

Seems like the Sabres love giving away money. They signed Jack Eichel to an eight-year, $80 million contract extension.
Timberwolves power forward Taj Gibson will become the first NBA player to wear No. 67. He picked the number to represent his hometown of Brooklyn.
