Gee wilikers, Linux reinvented their audio subsystems again, and now I gotta learn how PipeWire works.
At least it's better documented than PulseAudio. Getting JACK and PulseAudio to play well together was frustrating. PipeWire for the most part "just works" (since it's mostly a drop-in replacement).
On my realtime audio synthesis laptop (running Debian), I still just masked everything PipeWire and used JACK, though, because I didn't want to mess with too much of what I know. Yet. Maybe I'll make an effort when pipewire-0.3.65 becomes pipewire-1.0.0.
Still, I definitely missed having a realtime audio computer 🥰

a man mansion scenario for man mansion monday
A lone Man Mansion crashes through the trees, the Departed's laughter trailing along behind him. Frantically, he searches every glowing spot he comes across. "Shit!" No luck, he's coming up empty handed at every turn, and the Departed is hot on his trail.
"DeeeeaAAR HouSe HusbaaaaaanD~" She's here! The Departed stalks out of the shadows, closing in on the singled out and defenseless Man Mansion. In his desperate search, the Man Mansion has found a dead end, the undergrowth too thick to escape through.
The terrifyingly huge titula eases her way towards her cornered prey, seemingly relishing in the growing fear, stretching out the Man Mansion's final moments for her own amusement.
"CaaaAaAaAaAn I biiiiiiTE yoooouuuuuu~"
BLAT BLAT BLAT
What's this?! At the very last moment, a Guardian has appeared from beneath the Man Mansion, launching a vicious attack with a roar that forces the Departed back, tripping over her many legs in her haste to escape. An astonishing turnaround!
His impending doom thwarted, the Man Mansion takes a moment to rest, trembling from the close call. The Guardian climbs up the Man Mansion's bioarchitecture, settling in one of the upper windows, perched in a way that reminds the author of having a little pet in the chest pocket of a coat. He pulls out a cigarette for a victory smoke.
The Man Mansion recovers from his ordeal, shakes himself, and heads off. We hope he finds his Haunting and doesn't get separated again. With a Guardian by his side, we have high hopes for his survival.

Can you do one about the Sea of Thieves water?
OK
so . there was a biiig long talk about this at siggraph one year!! you can watch that here if you'd like . in the time between me getting this ask and me fully recreating the water, acerola also released a great video about it . the biiig underlying thing they do and the reason why it looks so good is they are making a Really Detailed Ocean Mesh in realtime using something called an FFT (fast fourier transform) to simulate hundreds of thousands of waves, based on a paper by TESSENDORF
WHAT IS AN FFT - we'll get to that. first we have to talk about the DFT - the discreet fourier transform. let's say you have a SOUND. it is a c chord - a C, an E, and a G, being played at the same time. all sounds are waves!!! so when you play multiple sounds at the same time, those waves combine!!! like here: the top is all 3 notes playing together, so they form the waveform at the bottom!!
now if someone handed you the bottom wave, could you figure out each individual note that was being played? how about if someone handed you a wave of One Hundred Notes. you would think it would be very hard. and well, it would be, if not for the Discreet Fourier Transform.
essentially, there is a way to take a bunch of points on a waveform comprised of a bunch of different waves, add them all together, do some messed up stuff with imaginary numbers, that will spit back out at you what individual waves are present. i made a little test program at the start of all this: the left are the waves i am putting into my Big Waveform, the top right is what that ends up looking like, and all the little rainbow points on it are being sampled to spit out the graph at the bottom right: it shows which frequency bands the DFT is finding (here it is animated)
this has enormous use cases in anything that deals with audio and image processing, and also,
THE OCEAN
tessendorf is basically like, hey, People Who Are Good At The Ocean say that a buuuunch of sine waves do a pretty good job of approximating what it looks like. and by a bunch they mean like, hundreds of thousands to millions. oh no.... if only there was a way we could easily deal with millions of sine waves..........
well GREAT news. not only can you do the DFT in one direction, but you can also do it in REVERSE. if you were to be given the frequency graph of a noise for example, you could use an INVERSE DFT to calculate what the combined wave graph looks like at any given time. so if you were to have say, the frequency graph of an oceaaaan, for example, you could calculate what the Ocean wave looks like at any given time. and lucky for us, it works in two dimensions. and thats the foundation of the simulation !!!!!
BUT WAIT
as incredible as the DFT is, it doesn't scale very well. the more times you have to do it, the slower it gets, exponentially, and we are working with potentially millions of sine waves here
THE FAST FOURIER TRANSFORM here we are . the fast fourier transform is a way of doing the discreet fourier transform, except, well, fast. i am Not going to explain the intricacies of it because its very complex, but if you want to learn more there are a ton of good 30 minute long videos on youtube about it . but essentially, due to the nature of sine waves repeating, you can borrow values as you go, and make the calculation Much faster (from exponential growth to logarithmic growth which is much much slower, and scales very well at higher numbers). it's, complicated, but the important part is it's so much faster and the diagram kind of looks like the shadow the hedgehog story plot
so if we use the inverse FFT on a graph of a rough estimate of what frequency of waves in the ocean (called a spectrum, basically tells us things like how many small waves, how many big waves, how different waves follow the wind direction. sea of thieves uses one called the phillips spectrum but there are better ones out there!!) now we have our waves !!!!!!! we can also use another inverse FFT to get the normals of the waves, and horizontal displacement of the waves (sharpening peaks and broadening valleys) through some derivatives . yayy calculus
OK MATH IS OVER. WE HAVE OUR WAVES!!! they are solid pink and look like pepto bismol. WHAT NOW
i cheated a bit here they look better than not being shaded because i am using the normals to reflect a CUBEMAP to make it look shiny. i think sea of thieves does this too but they didnt mention it in their talk. they did mention a FEW THINGS THEY DID THOUGH
FIRST OFF - SUBSURFACE SCATTERING. this is where the sun pokes through since water is translucent. SSS IS REALLY EXPENSIVE !!!!!! so they just faked it. do you remember the wave sharpening displacement i mentioned earlier? they just take the value where the waves are being sharpened and this will pretty naturally show off the areas that should have subsurface scattering (the sides of waves). they make it shine through any time you are looking towards the sun. they also add a bit of specular ! sss here is that nice blue color, and specular is the shiny bits coming off the sun. the rest of the lighting is the cubemap i mentioned earlier, i dont know if thats what they use but it looks nice !!!!!
then the other big thing that they do is the FOAM !! sorry i lied. there's more math. last one. you remember the wave sharpening displacement i Just mentioned. well they used that to find something called the JACOBIAN and well im not even going to begin to try and explain what it means but functionally what it does, is when the jacobian is NEGATIVE it means waves are clipping into eachother. and that means we should draw some foam!!! we can also blur and fade out the foam texture over time and continuously write to it to give it some movement, and bias this value a bit to make more or less foam. they do both of these!!!
YAYYYYY !! OK !! THAT'S SEA OF THIEVES WATER!!!!! THANKS FOR WAITING ALL THIS TIME. you can see my journey here if you would like to i have tagged it all oceanquest2023
thank you everyone for joining me :) i had fun

it's 1am and i'm real tired and got to be up tomorrow, but i couldn't resist at least checking those flags. what i thought was me fucking up some abstraction/refactoring turns out to be..would you believe it, a stack buffer overflow (quelle surprise) in the queue system i just started implementing. i think the queue elements are too small, but i'll look properly when i have some time to sit down
Yall ever find the cause of a bug and it's so dumb you genuinely face palm
#grrl.rb#progblr#codeblr#idk if i mentioned the project before or in how much detail#but all i'll say is it's gonna be doing some audio manipulation#in realtime

hi fe3h fandom. i come bearing another shitpost. video description under the cut
[video description: cuts from the cutscene at the end of the “reunion at the fortress city” chapter of fire emblem: three hopes, azure gleam. the footage rearranges the scene to more accurately fit the audio, which is from the sonic adventure 2 real time fandub. the video goes as follows
thales (to the voice of eggman from the realtime fabdub), “it seems you bitches have come to a standstill in tarzan’s forest. you have thirteen seconds until the island fucking explodes, you hot topic wannabe and you blue gumball son of a bitch.” when he says “hot topic wanna be”, the video shows edelgard, and when he says “you blue gumball son if a bitch”, it shows dimitri.
it cuts to a clip of thales fighting off dimitri and edelgard as the audio says, “you have done nothing but destroy my life, i hope you both die.”
it then shows dimitri, speaking in time with the audio, which (with sonic’s voice) asks, “hot topic?”
edelgard turns her head, with a timed cut to when thales unleashes the crest stone that transforms her into a dark beast, so she is turning her head to look at it. the audio says (as shadow), “no, my secret!”
the crest stone explodes into a rush of dark purple fog, and dimitri shields his face from it. edelgard is then shown being consumed by the fog. the audio continues with the dubbers talking as themselves saying: “i hope you know that’s actually what happens in the story.”
“that is a— like you literally—”
“wait, dead seriously? seriously?!”
“yeah, he literally says, ‘this island will explode’—”
“yeah, watch, watch!”
dimtri reaches out towards edelgard as she disappears. the audio says “oh my god, i didn’t know!”
the video then cuts to black. end vd.]

Now im curious, if you could, would you ever play these through actual like. Midi hardware? Old sound cards with wavetable synths, actual opl3 cards, etc?
that's the thing about it. this software and soundfonts perfectly duplicates the output from the hardware I actually have - and the other soundfonts are for hardware that costs hundreds to thousands of dollars lol. or they're things that do not actually accept arbritrary midi input (genesis, sm64, earthbound, undertale, the one that attempts to perform synthesis of instturments using samples of things an NES can play)
like i could force my isa sound blaster to ignore its wavetable card and do opl3 synthesis for general midi - but I already have a soundfont produced from sampling what the sound blasters do for opl3 synthesis for those instruments and it sounds identical lol. the only thing I'd get out of going through the trouble of moving stuff to the 486 to play through it would be a bit of extra noise incurred via the patch cable and the kinda mediocre line in on my modern laptop! and that thing can only play in real time while the timidity software renders out the uncompressed audio roughly ~5x to ~30x realtime playback speed, depending on complexity of the midi & the soundfont used
though hey if someone wants to donate all the cash/actual hardware to get weird with it and hook all the now quite rare and pricey modules and cards up i wouldn't mind. but i'd need a second 486 desktop just to fit them too!

Was at a local electronics salvage store and saw this Sony MZ-R70 MiniDisc player for $100. Which cracked me up because since I own one of the same model myself, from a church yardsale which I paid $12 for, which was mostly complete and came with 8 discs, I knew this was incomplete and not worth that price.
It’s supposed to come with the manual (of course), an optical cable (for audio input), a Xitel interface the optical cable and the computer plug into [USB-A to USB-B cable not shown here, you know what one of those look like], a remote control (which is used in both playing and in recording/tracking), a wallwart power supply (for use without battery and for charging a rechargeable battery), and some cheap headphones.
This is the lower-priced and better-designed version of a more featured unit (the MZ-R90), but only can record in realtime and via the optical cable (which plugs into the first headphone jack). The battery life is fairly impressive at 17 hours on one alkaline AA. Compared to models from three years later that had NetMD functionality (direct connection to the computer via USB, SonicStage burning software, and three recording and playback speeds) and 30+ hours on a battery, this is just a nice unit to play storebought MD albums on rather than use to record your own.
