yalor exactly i love our slang and everything. like it's so so special. and words like abuden and can and haizz just cant be translated HAHGS. i love it.
also yayy fellow my/sg friend hehe <33
hanor - like how do i explain what the meaning of words like sian is (e.g. walao my period is making me damn siannnn) or how do i get the same feel in english when i curse and swear cos our slang is just damn evocative lor (e.g. wah heng gao lao sai HAHA).
i just see our slang as being so reflective of the south east asian chinese diaspora yknow? i rmb once i got stopped by an australian customs officer cos my passport says im both singaporean and chinese - and he was mega confused that ethnicity =/= nationality and i had a hard time convincing him that alamak im not fr china laaa. like, the very nature of singlish / manglish really reflects the fact that our ancestors kinda floated their way down from china (as pirates / coolies), intermarried w the local population in msia / indonesia, stayed in kampongs where everyone speaks a rojak mix of chinese / malay / indian dialects and languages so now our slang is just v...impt to me.
sorry for rambling so much HAHAHAHA
(oh and btw im part of (a) the south east asian discord channel and (b) the baobeis discord channel so if you wanna join, let me know and i can point you in the right direction!)

Ok friends I have been laughing about thus for exactly five days liao.
CW for swearing and juvenile humour
This is a hilarious look at how convoluted Chinese culture is.
Hosts are supposed to ensure their guests eat. But guests should know when to stop (usually at the last piece). Out of respect, the youngest should let the oldest eat, but the oldest tend to indulge the youngest with their whims.
So yes, it's really convoluted and complicated and who gets the last piece is always a point of contention during New Year Reunion dinners. (Personally, my fam goes with grandma gets the best pieces, and the kiddies can have the last pieces)
The ferocious older sister is sort of a laugh point as well because they're usually the ones who keep the young'uns in line.
Prepare to say a lot of 'paiseh, paiseh', which means 不好意思, aka it's not really polite.
Juvenile humour in this includes:
700, 700, 700!
It's pronounced qi bai qi bai qi bai, which sounds like cheebai, which means 'cunt'
牛二牛米 aka Cow Two Cow Paddy
Aka, 'what kind of shitty saying'. Chinese culture have four character sayings called Cheng Yu. They can describe a multitude of things and during CNY we usually put up sayings like 步步高升 (improvement every step),身体健康(health),新年如意(may the year turn out as you wish),年年有余(excess every year).
But Ken brought 牛二牛米, the pinyin of which is Niu Er Niu Mi (New Year, New Me), but read in Chinese it makes no sense. Cow two cow paddy??
Not to mention it's a double faux pas cause 2019 is the year of the Pig/Boar but the saying has got cows in it.
CHOW CHEE ----
Chow: a surname. 周or 赵
Chee: a legit name. I'd like to think it's 吉 in this skit
But when combined with the last identifier aka Ken, Hong, and Bai, the homonym sounds like swear words. (The following are possible written versions of the names, i'm just guessing but it shows how incredibly important pinyin is for Chinese names)
周吉健 chow chee ken, could mean good health, but sounds like 'smelly dick'
周吉宏 chow chee hong, could mean good and fortuitous, but sounds like 'smelly fart'
周吉拜 chow chee bai, could mean good worship or offering, but sounds like 'smelly cunt'
Other things:
Multilingual rojak
Typical of Malaysians and Singaporeans who will randomly switch languages at will. Good luck if you speak only one of them.
One-upping one another loudly
CNY dinners always have this. There's that one relative who's sicker, richer, poorer and everything you did, they did something more extra!
Crazy rich asians
Xiao long bao is not cheap. To be able to afford that in a titanium steamer and a Chaffeur means they're incredibly rich. Also, "The Tan Huas are blooming."

one-on-one feedback
In todays studio class (26.07) we got called for one-on-one feedback from our tutor about our project ideas. I explained my idea about designing a Malaysian guidebook and these are some things I should consider.
"how is this guidebook different from all the other Malaysian guidebooks out there?"
"approach making this guidebook from a communication designers perspective by maybe making a guidebook on 'Malaysian typography' 'Malaysian art' 'Malaysian language' "
Katie's feedback was really helpful for me as I felt like I was behind and struggling on how to further develop my idea. Taking the feedback into consideration, I came up with another idea of making a language guide / cultural guide for people like me who moved out of Malaysia and wants to reconnect with the culture. Katie then gave me an example of a Mandarin Chinese learning app/book called 'Chineasy' by ShaoLan Hsueh.
However, after careful consideration, I wasn't keen on creating a Malaysian language guide book as Malaysia is a multilingual country with 137 spoken languages where Malay, English, Mandarin and Tamil are the most spoken by Malaysians. In Malaysia people tend to speak 'Bahasa Rojak' (mixed language) 'code-switching between different languages'. Another reason why I decided to not create a Malaysian language book was because this project would be heavily based around 'typography' which is an area I'm not 100% familiar with, not an area I'm skilled in.

. I used to think I was really cool. I don't know if this means or is about my self-esteem gone low. And I don't know how things would have turned out if they had gone differently, honestly, but sometimes, I think, even if nothing had gone wrong, eventually, maybe, I would have gotten less fired up and bright-eyed than I was at 21; like patina. I thought I was finally growing up, then. Now I think I was young. I'll think this about myself in two years from now, too. I thought I'd done the lot, or like I was ready for the world. Now after everything I realise how small my world was, even as it seemed expansive at the time. I thought I was grown; cultured, in that sense people think of when they see or use or say the word 'cultured' - which now to me really just means Eurocentric and imperialist. I thought my English accent was a kinda cool feature; used to be pleased whenever someone thought I was English - I still have that feeling vaguely, these days. I thought I was complex and rich and had so much depth - made up of Portuguese-language bossa nova and trip-hop jazz and chill lounge, sitting in bars in gowns, having money to spare or spend that I could pay for a night's drinks even while out with a friend 10 years older than me with a full-time stable job. I thought I was a proper Woman, closetful of lingerie worth over a few thousand dollars, high heels and an easy walk, days in reading philosophy and poetry and watching 'deep' films and 'thoughtful' telly. Like the world was a red carpet rolled out; having photoshoots, travelling, taking photos of myself in hotel rooms. Look - I was happy. I knew who I was; I was the girl with a bagful of books having a coffee in a small Western European city square, going home to an apartment in a small lane, buying bread downstairs from the shop on the corner, a view of a slice of river from my window. But something about all that memory now only gives me a sense of 'I was so young, then.' Things were easy. And I don't mean this as if they'd been easy for years; they hadn't. It'd been the first time they'd been easy in a decade, or more. I had a direction, a plan, somewhere to go, somewhere to be, things to do, a big trip. Everything was fine, and love either came or went, and my hands were free, open, and unclasping. Young hands, not knotted, not gnarled, not stiffened into a claw's clutch. Now? Now I'm not so sure. I've lost the wonder from my eyes. There's a lack of lustre that I used to have, an ease, a freedom. I was riding on the sense that I'd overcome everything and could do anything. A second wind of invincibility that came off a bed of humility and gratefulness. And then, suddenly - it was hard, to be grateful again, you know? For months I decided to myself that the bad things were a good test, a run-round, proof I could overcome it again with the tools I'd just learned... for the first few months after that, even with the ex, I said in all that fraught tautness, 'Just one more thing to get over, this will make us stronger! :)' Big fat ground-devastating crash comedown car wreck train on fire derailing straight dash into the ocean. My nails haven't been perfect for the longest time, now. I used to fix them up after a certain amount of chipping, and now... My hair, I've just left to grow as it will, fade to what it will. My body is a forgotten garden. As I got into the shower today I realised I'd forgotten what my lips look like between my thighs, that they looked like something at all. I used to be so keenly aware of my body. Now the sensations everywhere have dulled, only occasionally flaring up in some sort of protest of being forgotten. And now I don't know what I sound like; my accent is a mongrel; I don't know or care if I stand out; my clothes I no longer even ken if I have a style, I'm a plate of rojak that's not particularly outstanding or seem to be. The amalgamation before was defined, now it's just a jumble, like tangled necklaces, or a heap of undone puzzle pieces. Something come over me like a wave of freshwater and wash me clean to the bone, white like I've been picked and boiled. Now there's all these realisations that just stop hitting as hard as they used to come. Now it's just hard-knock dents collecting on the brass body of me. What do I say, it's just one more scrape away, one more kink in the metal, already sort of bent out of shape. I used to think my voice or saying something was important; now I think that much less so. I used to think I had something to say, something to contribute, that there was something I could come at new, worth saying. Now I'm not sure where I am, the compass calibration is shot, Google Maps shows the wrong direction from where I'm pointed; I don't know my bearings, heck, maybe someone's already on it, what do I, hm - I bit off more than I could chew, first of all - and then, as it tends to happen, someone shoved from the end, and. My mouth isn't big enough to take all this in at once; the discomfort of your throat when you swallow too big a bite. Tried to fit so much seeing and experiencing into a compressed seven or eight months, but it turns out, there's just spillover. You can't fit 25 hours into a day; nor 27, nor 28, 30; 36; 50. Default state: Unimpressed. How depressing. Not at all a way to live in the world, except I think, everyone's less than impressed, lately. Fit me into the cold. Fit me into the teeth of frost, the ice blue distances. I've lived three winters, or coldnesses, in the past two years, so far. Winter in London, winter in Australia, the end of spring in Vilnius. And now the beginning again of winter in Melbourne. I haven't had a single summer, my dears; the prickly heat of Sg doesn't count. More like a pricking at the thumbs, of something wickedly this way comes. What am I? I don't know. Patched up, patchwork, poster plastered over holes in the wall... makeshift; made shift. Made to shift. That sounds about right.

I've never made bao so I can't recommend any recipes dfhksd but there was this bao truck at my high school so almost all of my knowledge of bao types comes from the menu (photos are from the net)
peanut bao (花生包) crushed peanuts with sugar,,, very nice
custard bao (奶油包) something simple and sweet you can eat very fast when the teacher is not looking, with minimal repercussions on digestive system (my favorite from high school bao truck)
vegetable bao (菜包) the kind of vegetable bao i'm familiar with is the one that uses 沙葛 (jicama? we don't really know the english names of vegetables over here we just go with whichever language says it more often) it's the pale vegetable in the photo above (also lovely in rojak and popiah!)
red bean paste bao (豆沙包) pretty good. can never go wrong with red bean paste (adzuki? anko? i'm learning so many new words)
lotus paste bao (莲蓉包) it's the same stuff found in mooncakes!! also the bao is green because it's made with pandan
bonus bao:
xiaolongbao (小笼包) they've put soup in a bao can you believe it
curry bao (咖包) seems more like a local malaysian thing but i'm not about to complain because i love curry
@orange-cheetah Can you please link me those recipes??? I have a pork one, but custard and peanut are new to me and they sound DELICIOUS!!!

People think I really eat clean all the time. . However, I do crave and love snacking, especially after work. It is a way for me to relax and rewind. . So I choose premium snacks like Woo-Dang (aka U-dang). In Malaysia, we speak creative rojak language :p . My family and I can enjoy Woo-Dang prawn crackers at ease because they are made from fresh prawns meat caught from the sea daily without preservatives or MSG! . Woo-Dang comes in 3 unconventional flavours: 1. Salted egg-- dip them in Luckin Kopi's famous Salted Egg Sauce for extra oomph. 2. Mala-- just the spiciness I love! Awesome tongue numbing crackers. 3. Seaweed- enhances the taste of the ocean and a great hit with kids. . The @mywoodang crackers can also be matched with other dips such as hummus, guacamole, salsa and tzatziki. Instant transformation into middle eastern and Mexican snacks! . . . . . . . #yingzangel #foodporn #foodie #lunch #instafood #foodphotography #healthy #food blogger #instagood #goodmorning #foodstagram #tasty #foodlover #homemade #foodgasm #Dipitwitheverydangthing #LuckinKopiSaltedEgg #Woodang #Woodangfreshfromthesea (at Menara Kuala Lumpur (KL Tower Official)) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIKAGSIs2gt/?igshid=sdjgm3zdaipz

Singapore’s bid for UNESCO hawker food listing eats at neighbours | News
Singapore – Conventional avenue meals thrives throughout Asia, because it does world wide, reflecting in distinctive methods native historical past, tradition, substances, and tastes.
Avenue hawkers in Vietnam serve up a beloved rice noodle soup known as pho (pronounced “fuh”).
Indonesia gave the world satay – skewered and grilled meats.
Multi-cultural Malaysia has satay too. And spicy laksas.
Whereas Thailand has a inexperienced papaya salad known as som tam that is sizzling and bitter and helps counter the tropical warmth.
Singapore’s avenue meals are largely the identical as these present in neighbouring Malaysia – each share an extended historical past underneath British rule and briefly merged till Singapore’s expulsion in August 1965 – and in Indonesia.
An apt instance is a well-liked dish known as rojak, a conventional fruit and vegetable salad dish meaning “combination” or “eclectic combine” within the Malay language.
Even Singapore’s nationwide dish, Hainanese hen rice, was introduced by immigrants from the Hainan province in southern China.
The Lee household’s signature hen rice, which was first offered from a hawker stall in 1968 [Tom Benner/Al Jazeera]
But Singapore is making a bid for a novel distinction amongst Asian avenue meals traditions. As its neighbours and meals critics scoff, the city-state is making ready a petition for UNESCO recognition of its hawker tradition, and an inventory on the UN physique’s Consultant Checklist of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
If the bid is profitable, it is going to be Singapore’s second itemizing after the Botanic Gardens, which have been named a World Heritage web site alongside Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and the Nice Wall of China in 2015.
‘Conceited behaviour’
Neighbouring international locations with revered avenue meals traditions equivalent to Malaysia – the place the town of Penang is famend for its hawker tradition – see the trouble as pushy and divisive.
Malaysian superstar chef Redzuawan Ismail, higher generally known as Chef Wan, informed native media it was “boastful behaviour”.
“I do not suppose it is smart for them to do that as a result of it’s going to create lots of unhappiness among the many folks when it comes to branding,” he mentioned.
Bee Yinn Low, a Malaysian cookbook writer who blogs at Rasa Malaysia, informed Al Jazeera that Singapore’s bid was purely about advertising.
“There may be nothing distinctive about Singapore hawker tradition,” she mentioned. “If UNESCO approves their utility, it will be an actual disgrace, to not point out that Singapore would create a really hostile atmosphere for its neighbouring international locations, which have a lot extra to supply so far as hawker meals tradition and custom.”
However others assist the concept.
“Whereas one might discover comparable dishes all through the area when it comes to substances, Singapore is exclusive in combining flavour profiles and cooking methods which might be impressed and created by its multiracial inhabitants,” American-born chef Eve Felder, managing director at The Culinary Institute of America, Singapore, informed Al Jazeera.
“From these various cultural influences, Singapore has developed a novel avenue meals tradition that stands in a category of its personal.”
‘Group eating rooms’
Asserting Singapore’s intention to win the designation, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong known as hawker centres a novel a part of Singapore’s id. “Hawker centres are our neighborhood eating rooms,” he mentioned at a Nationwide Day rally in August.
Like their counterparts elsewhere in Southeast Asia, Singapore’s hawkers as soon as dished out meals from rickshaws and cell carts on the streets, staples equivalent to char kway teow, fried carrot cake, and fish ball noodles.
However from the 1960s, the travelling distributors have been moved into government-built open-air hawker centres in addition to to meals courts and low retailers, all of which function neighbourhood social centres and assembly locations.
KS Teng begins every weekday morning at a hawker centre within the island’s Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood [Tom Benner/Al Jazeera]
KS Teng, 60, exhibits up every weekday morning at a bustling hawker centre in Singapore’s central Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood for espresso and breakfast, greeting buddies and neighbours, earlier than heading to work.
“There isn’t any different place just like the hawker centre,” he mentioned. “Should you go over to Malaysia, they’ve the meals however they do not have the hawker centre tradition.”
Lily Kong, a Singapore Administration College professor who’s a part of a 14-member committee set as much as oversee the UNESCO bid, stresses hawkers are very a lot a part of Singapore life.
“It’s quintessentially multicultural and it mirrors very a lot Singapore’s evolution in city improvement, meals tradition and heritage, and societal material,” she mentioned. “It’s one thing that Singaporeans establish themselves with and cuts throughout a number of social and cultural teams.”
Many fear Singapore’s hawker tradition is endangered by economics and altering tastes.
With fast-growing wealth (memorably portrayed within the hit film Loopy Wealthy Asians) and the recognition of superstar cooks and Michelin-starred eating places, Singaporeans fear in regards to the lack of their conventional avenue fare, which may go for as little as S$three to S$four ($2.17 to $2.90) for a meal.
‘Nostalgic expertise’
As older hawkers retire, youthful Singaporeans aspire to careers that contain shorter hours, higher pay, and air-conditioned workplaces.
Genevieve Lee, 21, helps her father, David Lee, 52, in a household enterprise based by her grandfather in 1968. Lee Enjoyable Nam Kee began as a hawker stall and in the present day operates as a thriving open-air espresso store; its critically acclaimed hen rice going for S$four a plate.
“It is form of a nostalgic expertise; the sensation that comes with the meals,” Genevieve Lee mentioned. “Each day you see folks gathering round, your neighbours, your folks.”
However a teenager changing into a hawker is an exception to the rule.
Genevieve Lee helps her father (proper) within the household enterprise, promoting hen rice [Tom Benner/Al Jazeera]
Singapore has schemes to encourage extra younger hawkers, in addition to to develop on the roughly 110 hawker centres that host greater than 6,000 hawker stalls throughout the island. Many doubt it is sufficient.
UNESCO’s Consultant Checklist of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, created in 2008, already contains batik from Indonesia, yoga in India, and Malaysia’s Mak Yong theatre.
As one of many standards for inclusion is powerful public assist, Singapore’s orchestrated marketing campaign contains an internet petition. Thus far, greater than 35,000 Singaporeans have pledged their assist.
Sitting at a desk at his espresso store, David Lee says the most important factor that makes Singapore’s hawker tradition stand out stands out as the authorities’s involvement, from constructing and regulating hawker centres to attract distributors off the streets, to aggressively advertising its meals tourism.
“In Singapore, hawker tradition is way more organised due to the federal government,” he mentioned.

OK so I am so excited this is my first ever entry everrrrrr. So where do I start? I have so much to unfold and its driving me insaneeee (though Im not really sure if theres any sane left in me??).
I have always enjoyed writing. I love projecting my mind out loud. Anyone who is close to me knows how much I love like LOVE lurve, lavh to tell pieces from my mind. That explained the constant tweets I have tweet in the span of 3 seconds everyday.....(errr). and pretty much one day, I decided that tweeting my thoughts in the form tweets or whatsapp statuses are unhealthy. I feel like it will just past someone’s timeline and no one would ever respond (like, period). Its not like here people will respond but it gives me comfort knowing this is a safe space for me to literally, VOMIT (bluek) , ramble everything I want with no 240 characters limit and basically call this MY F**CKING SPACE. i can be annoying as for long as i want cause this is my territory.
I have yet to explore the layout, and familiarise myself to this whole tumblr thing....I have created tumblr since i was 13 but never really use it. Was browsing through different articles on internet and tumblr was one of the option to start writing blogs for FREE. See, im all here for fun and write like why would I pay RM30 monthly for a blog. Maybe En.Kamaruddin will pay to start his car parts business website but not me. I know everyone has families to feed and all but Im just a student so i dont really see why the need for me pay. I will not necessarily call myself a cheapskate but Im kinda is adgshsu. Maybe one day when Im already rich ill be generous enough to pay for my blog....maybe....we will see though
Anyways, Im still figuring everything out, my writing style especially....I dont know if I want it to be semi-formal or just casual or maybe more to twitter language i dont knowwwwwwwww....but like literally i can u know just suka hati bapak aku it like for example this whole post has inconsistant (i) like sometimes letak I as huruf besar or kecik idk. And to think about it i just rojak the bahasa hahahahahah. entah la...but dont think my blog will ever go international pun so dont really see the issue but then again one of the reason I (see at first I typed i, but i want to train myself to type I) want to start a blog is to polish and improve my english. Like i want it to be good like level Band 6 MUET type of thing. So yeah we will just watch and see from here cause honestly it all depends on my mood.
I think thats it for this post. I think im gonna have an end note like u know XOXO, gossip girl type of thing. YUp going to think of now. Im going to sleep now bye bye. its 4:06 AM like who start a blog at this time? I tell you, its me. Okie byyeee <3

Becoming Wonho
Through the rise of Korean culture around the globe, the Korean entertainment industry is bursting with talent that is like nothing we have ever seen before. Numerous youngsters audition all over the world and very few are accepted into agencies. Not long after an individual is chosen, they become a trainee and work countless hours perfecting their vocals, choreography, acting, image and some even take language classes. Trainees can train for as long as 10 years and still only a select few are given the opportunity to debut. With that being said, even after debut, most spend all their time making this their lives. Idols prove that work ethic has not completely dissolved from today’s generation.
Some may say that they are overworked, but I believe what they do is truly inspiring. An idol that has been a significant role model in my life is Shin Hoseok, otherwise known by his stage name Wonho. Aside from his normal idol activities, in his spare time, he works out and maintains his remarkably fit body. Earlier this year, fans were finally able to get some sort of answer as to why he does this. Wonho explained that not only did he really enjoy exercising, but he saw it as “etiquette towards his fans” (Soompi).
For a few years now, I have looked up to Wonho. My New Year’s resolution for 2018 was to become like Wonho. I was inspired to lose weight and become fit. Assuming a diet and little exercise, since the beginning of the year I have lost 30 pounds. My progress has been fairly slow and I will probably never be as buff as him, but I plan on continuing my quest to make a healthier me!

Just stroke the product through it and let it rinse out gently under warm, running water. Allow your hair to air dry rather than blow-drying.
When you dry your hair, you should just pat or blot it dry with a towel instead of rubbing your hair with a towel. Rubbing tangles and breaks your hair and can even lead to loss of hair. When you are blow-drying your hair, use a low setting and move the blow dryer constantly so that you don't fry one section of hair. Don't hold the blow dryer too close as this can cause harm to your hair and even burn you.
Nowadays, many famous celebrities aim for extremely extravagant or unique looks featuring many layers, the truth is that sometimes, simple is better. Although there is nothing wrong with aiming for a big look, you can sometimes go over the top. A simple black or red dress can sometimes do wonders for your look.

Mee Siam is one more common dish, which is a noodle dish unsurprisingly influenced by Thailand. In this dish, slim vermicelli noodles and shrimp are stir-fried in a tamarind sauce and then seasoned liberally with kalamansi limes (very small limes that are sweeter than normal kinds) which give this spicy dish a refreshing-tasting finish. Last but not least, the last foods that you need to know about and sample even though checking out Malaysia or Singapore is rojak. Rojak is a spicy salad with pineapple, guava, eco-friendly mango, peanuts and sesame seeds. The dressing is produced from a thick prawn paste and Thai chillies to give the dish an further kick. Don’t Forget About Dessert! Last but not least, the most essential element of the meal. Because of the disparate influences on Peranakan society, there is a large assortment of Nyonya desserts. What you will generally see are Malaysian components, like sweet potato and yams, merged with coconut milk or glutinous rice. Nonya cuisine Chinese elements like pink beans and even mung beans also make regular appearances in Peranakan desserts. Two really well-known desserts are burbur cha-cha, which is a porridge manufactured with sweet potato and sago then flavoured with rock sugar and pandan, as effectively as cendol, the place a bowl is layered with what look like eco-friendly candies which are made from eco-friendly pea flour and then lined in pink beans. These two levels are then coated in a mountain of shaved ice and rice which is then drizzled with coconut milk.

Jet-setting February 2013
February 2013,
It’s a lifetime experience that I will never forget.
My trip started at the end of January, 30th. I went to Xiamen, China for Syafiq’s Graduation. I have never been to China and it’s a very different experience.
One of the different thing would be; as soon as the plane landed on the ground, everyone unbuckle their belts and already trying to take their luggage from the overhead compartment. I was a bit mind-fuck because the stewardess had to use her back to hold the passenger and told them to get back to their seat.
Other than the language and the things that I expect.
I thought most of them could at least speak simple basic english but they don’t. they don’t even understand my sign language. In which made me regret for not finishing my Mandarin class and I realized that I suck at sign language. I can’t even tell the sales person where do I look for a towel.
I also expect for them to have small squinty eyes but no, their eyes were as huge and round as mine.
They drive on the left side of the car and they don’t have road rules. They just avoid whatever comes their way, so I guess the drivers are quite alert and you just got to be careful as to not get hit.
That Chinese food are just awesome because it’s halal so I can eat it. I don’t remember the name of the place but TAECO brought all of us there for the graduation dinner with everyone that was involve with the ceremony.
Things like Zara, Pull&bear, Bershka and so on is damn cheaper compare to the ones in Malaysia and there’s more variety too. So, I think shopping in Xiamen is better if you don’t think about the language barrier but if you speak Mandarin then, there’s nothing to stop you from going.
I went to Gulangyu Island. It’s a huge island that I didn’t get to discover all around but there were so many souvenir shop throughout the island. Most of them sell the same thing at the same price.
I expect myself to be back and to explore the island smartly the next time.
On the 5th Feb, my parents and I flew back to K.L but I only transit in K.L to get on my flight to London. Other than going back to Perth alone, flying to London would be my first trip overseas alone. Then again, there was a friend of mine waiting for me at the airport.
I was exhausted when I arrived on the 6th February, but when I saw my friend (abang) from afar, I was happy! and I got too nervous, I ran to the toilet and vomit. I stayed in London for a couple of hours, to sleep and waited for my friend to get his visa to the States. After lunch with his cousin, we hung out for a little while before heading to Portsmouth about 4.30pm.
We headed to Paddington train station, with the thought that the line would connect us to Portsmouth but we were wrong, we actually hadto go to Waterloo station to get to Portsmouth and it was during peak hours to Waterloo station using the underground line. It was an amazing experience but I was exhausted but I was trying hard not to be.
It was probably about 5pm when we reached Waterloo station and the train departed for about 6pm. At least I get to sit down for about 2 hours, talking to Abang along the way was quite hilarious too and sometimes I wonder why the hell am I here but at the same time, it was relaxing because it felt easy. Now, I don’t even think we could talk for more than 1 minute.
Before I left, I wanted to eat everything there is in the U.K. but when I was there, I don’t even know what happened to my appetite but I didn’t eat anything much. I know I had the dessert at Wharf Quay, and it was delicious.
In Portsmouth, we stayed over at Meera’s house and she actually waited for us since afternoon. We followed her to rehearsal, it was quite nice actually and to watch her dor the real event but I didn’t get to. We had Ken’s Fried Chicken for dinner, it was too salty and the trick of Towards the end of the day, I don’t really care about anything anymore. All I want to do was sleep for hours and hours and hours.
The next day, we went to town or city center and I sat at the fountain thinking about nothing and how exhausted I still am but I tried not to let it get to me because it was supposed to be a trip of exploring parts of England! While I was there, I learned to play pool too and I don’t think I like it because I actually don’t like the fact that my boobs touches the pool table every time I leaned over to take a shot. Haihs.
I spent two night in Portsmouth and the last day, we had lunch with Meera’s friend named Jon at a Seafood place. It was nice! and there was a bit of sightseeing of the ocean. I was damn cold. I do not want to be in Europe for winter again. I highly dislike it besides I love to hibernate during winter.
Anyways, we took the train and went to London. I got even more tired when we reached London. I honestly don’t know why I made this kind of trip. At first it was for this crazy life experience that I’ve always wanted to know how it’ll feel like. How does it feel to fly over from one continent to another. Well, I really did get what I wanted and it’s damn exhausting.
London was nice, we took a taxi from Waterloo Station to the hotel and I get to do a bit of sightseeing along the way. The hotel we stayed was 5 minutes from the Paddington Station and I was amazed that everything was actually so near. We walked everywhere and we had Noodle Oodle for dinner, it was delicious! I like the roasted duck. yums! I found my favourite place…. BOOTS! haha. Then, we walked to the hotel after dinner.
The next day, we went to British Museum and it was huge! I didn’t get to cover the whole area but that’s just another reason for me to go again the next time. There’s a list of things that I am going to do the next time. After the museum, we walked to Oxford street and Abang stopped to asked a lady for direction but Primark was just opposite the street. I wanted to laugh so bad that time but I was tired. hahaha. But somehow towards the end of the day, I turned moody and I was in no mood to talk to anyone. I realized that it made things awkward but I was too tired to care. I really am sorry for my behavior and I shouldn’t do that to people. Especially Nisya and Pedot because they took a couple of hours bus ride to get to London.
The last day in London, the only thing plan was check out and move to another hotel and the Chinese New Year Fireworks at Trafalgar Square. It was freezing! and the stupidest thing I did was to wear three layer of clothes and I didn’t wear my thermal wear. I guess now I know how the homeless feels, frozen to death. My jacket was wet because I wore the wrong one and I was stupid enough to not buy a new one when I was at Oxford Street.
The fireworks didn’t go long as expected and I guess because of the rain. It was devastating and I pity Jon because he was excited about it too, I guess he should come to Kuching for Chinese New Year. The fireworks would be more awesome! but just suffer the consequences of the haze after!
Well, after the firework, we did a bit of speed touring like walked to get to the train station which passed by the London Eye, Big Ben and The Parliament *The Parliament house is where we can talk* I did took a few photos but I don’t have it with me right now and I don’t know when will I ever have it. Maybe just maybe, I am not going to have it and I’ll go to London to re-write this trip. By that time, I’ll post an even awesome trip.
After dinner, there was a bit of snow and I was soaking for my jacket is useless. I wanted to experience the snow so much and when I get it, I don’t like it! not even one bit! We sent Pedot to the Bus Station because she could only stay for a night. But I’m thankful for her to visit me even it was for a night and I was being a moody bitch. I am so very sorry dot. Nisya stayed for another night and the three of us slept together and when she sleeps its kinda cute because she hides under the blanket.
Oh the second hotel overlooked the Hyde Park and I wanted to walked around there but with the weather being too cold for me to handle I would rather stay in bed or indoors but I didn’t do that much either. Oh, I fell in the tub and I called it Hyde Park!
The morning that I left, I was sad because I wanted so much to stay and really enjoy my trip, discover more places and eat all those desserts. It was such a rush trip and all I could feel was my exhaustion.
I arrived K.L on the 12th February morning and had teatime with Niessa at Bimmers, eating rojak ayam. Man! food never taste delicious as I didn’t eat the whole flight from London – Kul – Kch. My flight leaves to Kch at 8pm of the same day and I am so glad that I get to nap.
I slept through the entire flight from Kul – Perth. I arrived in Perth on 13th February at 5am and was glad that Nora pick me up. I stayed over Nora’s house for a couple of days, then to Deska’s and then to Waterford. I slept through the first 3 days that I was there. So there’s nothing much that I did there but to meet up with my movie partner, Denah, Dayah and Jas. I met up with Jas in London and we both met up in Perth too. At least I get to eat the few things that I’ve been wanting to eat for the past 2 years.
Did a bit of cleaning at Waterford with Azri and it was kind of funny as a bug flew up my nose when I was cleaning the pantry.
I did a bit of shopping at Carousel, Harbor Town and City but I didn’t get to do anything else.
I was also in town for Fringe World Event. It was nice. Nora and I walked through Northbridge to take a look around, passing by Metros made me miss those days when everything was fun.
I left Perth on the 18th february 2013 and I was sad to be leaving Perth. It was home, it was a place where I sort of grew up. Well, I was raised and grew up in Kuching but a place where I explore life was in Perth and it’ll always be home.
To sum up the trip, it was awesome! I went from Asia to Europe to Australiasia. It was pretty damn exhausting but some time in the future, I’ll probably tell someone to never travel like how I did in February 2013. You could at least spent 1 week plus in one place and really enjoy the place, the people and explore!

I am fucking /sunburnt/ wtf Vaguely remembering what it really is to be Southeast Asian - it's been so long since I've been anywhere else in SEA besides Sg. It's a strange hodgepodge of languages; everyone speaking in dialects - or to the 'proper'lists, tongues - really fucking hot sun; and tropical dresses in lurid floral and intricate patterned prints. Hot remnants of colonialism. Stronger than in a place like China. Found Portuguese left-behinds in a road name in Penang; igreja changing into the Malay 'gereja'. Penang is like Sg but less 'modernised'. Many state buildings that look like the ones here. It really wasn't that long ago, was it? Bangunan putih, besar. Hari sangat panas. The British are fucking boring; same Little India; same Chinatown patched out. Same road names, too. There's an Armenian Street there, and one here too; both in the similar sort of districts. Cut-out pre-patterned cookie cutter towns. The roads look the same; and the shophouses that are so rare and rarer left now here populating all the streets there. Queen Victoria everywhere - on Penang Hill, a clock tower's name. The same looking church with a different name. Same road signs. Same pool of racial populations. Same food, same rojak, same nasi, slightly different names. I could have been in an expanded Kampong Glam. Kurang kaya, kurang mahal. Tetapi - juga tidak. Apa ini? Sama-sama.
