THANK YOU!! And totally! I actually already drew Dib's family yesterday so this post was also motivation for me to do The Tallest as well!! I'm also gonna do a bit of a lore dump as well bc it's funny. Let's start with Dib's family then.

I actually had Gaz's design for 5 years now and she mostly was left unchanged except for a couple of palette tweaks. Also kept her alt pizza gamer hoodie.

Facts of DOOM 1. Membrane family are mexican. Prof. Membrane is himself a mexican immigrant while his kids were born in the US. All of the family members are bilingual and switch between Spanish and English at home. Gaz struggles a bit with her English tho but nothing too bad. 2. Prof. Membrane lost his arms AND wings to sharks. He really thought they were his friends... 3. Dib and Gaz are genetic clones of their father. They don't know it and don't really question where their non-existent mother is. 4. Prof. Membrane loves his kids even tho he is a very busy man. He might sometimes be an abscent father and be a little bit goofy silly but he always tries to make time for his kids and likes to organize family gatherings from time to time and lets either Dib or Gaz choose where they will eat and catch up that day. When it's Gaz's turn she chooses a crappy pizzeria place, when it's Dib's turn he prefers to stay at home with everyone to cook and eat mexican food together.

And, of course, The Tallest.

They are the new designs actually! Wanted to make them look... menacing and kinda have that ying yang energy sorta.

Facts of DOOM 1. The tallest leaders could be considered their own irken sub-species. It's rare to produce "the tallest" naturally but if needed then it could be done forcefully. The "tall irkens" which are not the current acting leaders are also considered to be really important members of irken society and treated like celebrities. 2. The Tallest are slightly more competent in this au. Red takes on the role of leading irken military and dealing with military related issues, while Purple is responsible for dealing with social issues. Both are giant gluttons and Purple is a bit more goofy than Red is. They also low-key act like a married gay couple. 3. The Tallest despise Zim. Obvious one, but they preferred Zim before he went on his insane murder-crime rampage. They see him as a crazy annoying child (which he is tbh) which they have a really hard time getting rid of.

Invader Zim except it’s a rodeo au. Which means the Membranes are actually a rodeo family who compete in rodeos all over the country.

They’re world famous, with Professor, or I guess in this case something different (Rancher Membrane? Cowboy Membrane? Just Membrane?) being a multi time national rodeo champion bull rider. He was forced to retire after a bull gored and crushed his arms to the point of needing amputations. He now lives vicariously through his children, specifically Dib, while managing the ranch and doing sketchy science (because he’s still insanely good at it). Said sketchy science is possible due to him becoming friends with an even more sketchy scientist with even less regard for people. The horse he rides the most is a very sweet and caring quarter horse mare named Clementine, who is a bay with a white blaze.

Gaz is a barrel racer and a damn good one. She’s won first in a couple big rodeos, with her quarter horse named Shadowhog. Shadowhog is a black mare with a white blaze and socks and is just as standoffish and angry as she in. Gaz still enjoys video games, but not as much. She also is the best trick roper in the family, and has experience in break away roping. She’s really good at it, but prefer barrel racing since she thinks it takes more skill. Dib thinks she’s making fun of him, but she really isn’t. She’s dabbled with bronc riding but is too lightweight. She is using in charge of herding on the ranch. She also is still one of Membrane’s creations.

Dib is a tie down roper who desperately wants to get into team roping but like. He has no friends. He’s fairly good at tie down roping, though hasn’t won anything. Membrane wants him to be a bull rider. Dib would rather die. He has a curious, playful dappled gray quarter horse mare named Mothman, and is still in love with the paranormal and would rather explore it than compete. Membrane hates this. Dib kinda loves horses and spends a lot of time with not only Mothman, but the other horses on the ranch like Shadowhog, Phoenix, Megera, ET, and Professor. Dib is also still a clone because Membrane is still stupid smart and has access to less than ethical equipment.

Zim is still an alien. He still wants to take over the earth. He was still banished. The only difference is that he lands in the country when Dib is about 15. Membrane happened to have a flyer for a ranch hand up and Zim decides the human thing to do is take a job. His base is in the shape of a barn that’s right outside of Membrane Ranches. Membrane gives him the job and a cowboy hat and Dib is immediately like “that’s an alien Wtf” but Membrane ignores him. And then proceeds to insist on having Zim trained as a steer wrestler due to his strength and gives him a palomino quarter horse gelding named ET (Dib finds the irony hilarious), who is irritable and must be bribed with treats.

The ranch is named Membrane Ranches and has thirteen horses (four ranch horses- Clementine, Peggy (Appaloosa mare), Foodie (paint quarter horse gelding), and Generator (bay quarter horse gelding); two barrel horses- Shadowhog and Megara (chestnut quarter horse mare with white socks); one tie down roping horse- Chupacabra (paint quarter horse stallion); one steer wrestling horse- Covenant (buckskin quarter horse mare); four generic roping horses- ET, Mothman, Phoenix (nearly white quarter horse gelding), and Doppler (black quarter horse gelding); and one bronc- Wildfire (bright chestnut mustang with a white blaze and socks); as well as sixty head of cattle.

Dib gets tasked with teaching Zim the ropes of steer wrestling and ranch work. They try to kill each other between the very much forced lessons.

Zim is a shit ranch hand at first hates it because of germs. Dib uses this as an opportunity to lie and say all humans are fine with germs and Zim very reluctantly agrees. He does eventually start to get used to it, eventually becoming a fairly good ranch hand. He gets surprisingly protective of ET. ET gets surprisingly close to Zim, always nickering when he comes in.

Zim eventually gets told his mission is fake and Dib awkwardly comforts him. The next week he’s dragged to a rodeo (a massive one) and immediately starts getting very overwhelmed by the extremely loud noises and scents and the bumping. He’s not competing but Gaz and Dib are. Dib completely missed the tie down roping because he’s taken Zim away from the crowds and noise to decompress. (Not because he cares but because he’s not gonna let the alien do something stupid clearly).

Membrane is very annoyed.

A couple years later and more rodeos later Dib is nineteen and wins first at one of the largest rodeos in the country. Zim also competes and gets second. Dib (and Gaz who gets first in a lot of big rodeos) are invited to another big event. Zim comes with.

The night before the competition, Dib and Zim notice a runaway steer. Dib gets it around the head and Zim gets it by a hind leg. Dib realizes that holy shit they could be a roping team. At the same time a roping team is forced to drop out so the pair sign up.

They wind up getting forth. Gaz is thrilled that Dib is able to do what he’s wanted to do. Membrane is angry because he wanted to get Dib to bull riding after tie down roping inevitably wore him out.

Dib and Zim eventually become world champion team ropers. And they eventually make their own ranch. And maybe kiss.

since we don't know if Tak will be in this AU can we have an idea of what she might sound like?

Of course!! I have a few ideas!!

If Tak was in the AU, she'd have a lot more technology to help her fit in, so she'd definitely have a translator. I image her voice to sound waayyy more calmer and just a bit monotone, since Iyer-Kahn can't really feel a whole lot of emotions.

The perfect example of this would be Sal from Space Odyssey 2010

Of course she'd have to have the accent but you get the idea.

Now, for her roars~

Female Iyer-Kahn have higher pitched feminine roars. I can imagine Tak sounding less vicious and more elegant in the AU so she'd sound like this:

I enjoyed making this! I don't know much about Tak, it's been years since I seen her debut episode. I just sorta remember her being waay more competent than Zim and that she really really hates him. Don't hesitate to tell me more about her! And who knows! Maybe she might appear in the comic, we'll just have to see

Ok on to zim in my rebel au

Zim unlike the original series is actually competent

In fact because of his usefulness and skillfulness as a smeet tallest miyuki takes interest in him and does something no tallest has ever done. She makes him her apprentice

He was given the title of an elite while still being a smeet. He was also trained as a full on irken soldier and was very successful in his training. However he’s still considered too short to be anything other that a service drone. This however doesn’t stop him he worked incredibly hard to pave his way to a valuable asset to the empire. And tallest miyuki wanting to further this little experiment has him recoded as a invader. Which is just so he’ll have easier access to things, basically a title only in name.

She cultivates him in her personal student which raises his status in irken society. She has him specifically trained by the best and top irken soldiers. She forces him as a smeet to go with different invaders and watch and learn from them. She even drops him in a desolate wasteland to survive on his own for a couple of years.

Finally she task him with taking over a planet, Specifically the planet jackers homeworld.

So zim is task with over taking this planet and he of course does so with minimal effort. Now tallest miyuki throughly impressed but still testing zim’s abilities puts him into the irken labs to test his intelligence and abilities in science

Of course this is where things go downhill

He much like the in canon he makes the Infinite Energy Absorbing Blob. However this time he makes a container that it cannot escape from unless he or tallest miyuki or the control brains unlocks it

This of course causes disaster when it is ultimately unleashed and kills tallest miyuki. Zim is framed because of this “accident” and is demoted to a service drone. and is used as a cautionary tale for other short or defective irken to never step out of their stations.

Now zim hates this but he’ll pay his due diligence to the empire and atone for his mistakes. Of course he’s always been a little skeptical about the accident that caused him his demotion. But not much time to think about it when he’s serving the new tallest.

Of course purple and red are chosen as the next tallest and of course zim is specifically recoded as their service drone so the control brains can keep an eye on him.

And while purple and red have never really liked zim and to be honest zim doesn’t feel all that inclined to them either even after they became the tallest.

They of course berate him and abuse him so after one push too many he snaps. And goes on a complete rampage, ranting and yelling at them and after his anger subsided and he realizes he just yelled. At his tallest. So He runs.

Of course being on the massive means there’s not a lot of places to hide so he goes in the vents. He’s there for days scrounging around for snacks and stuff when he runs into someone. It’s skoodge?!?

Long story short he’s introduced to the irken rebellion. It’s a collection of all the defective and short Irkens. These Irkens have been living in the massive’s vents and have been undetected for years now by rewriting their pak’s code so the controll brains don’t notice them.

The code was taken from a defective irken who’s coding made it so the control brains had no control over their pak and thus no control over them. Seeing as this irken was a huge liability for them the irken was set to be deactivated however that irken escaped and hid on the massive undetected for years. Helping other defectives escape and recoding their paks. Slowly building up an army. This irken is named “The First”.

They have assembled a group of highly skilled Irkens and dubbed them “The counsel.” So Skoodge explains all of this and the rebellions plan to overthrow the control Brains. Zim of course is not on board with this at all but he stays in the rebellion for a bit to gather information and to wait until the tallest have calmed down after his out burst. During this time zim is not imitated yet. Keep that in mind it’s important. Finally he’s brought to the counsel to be initiated and he’s still not on board with this until the counsel tells him how the control brain have been pulling the strings and manipulating all of irken kind.

Show him proof that they might’ve played a hand in tallest miyuki’s death.

omg so like. the orikeros that i get brainrot about the most frequently r the main KOORAS members..... in fact i am once again thinking about them rn and thats bcuz theyre pretty importnant to my au :) ithink

i usually call them a SCIENCE SQUAD!!!!! though odidi and twuwawa are the only ones who do science related stuff currently really ...... rozeze used to be a scientist but she kinda stopped after a pretty major fuck up (: and well she doesnt really have the time to work on anything anyways bc shes kinda the head of da whole organization. and thats a busy job! and i think of rozozo as just a security guard really..... him n rozeze are twinsies though so even if hes a low rank he still gets more respect from his sister than any other guard haha ..... the favoritism is real

- her idiocy doesnt exactly ruin her competence as a scientist though. she never really fucked an experiment up unlike some others🤔 and the fact that shes pretty much emptyheaded should be a positive for KOORAS really. u cant feel bad about ur past actions if youre incapable of thinking about them in the first place. many KOORAS workers are full of regrets but he is not one of them! i feel like that would make her kinda impossible to ever redeem though🧐

OH YEAH I FORGOT TO MENTION THIS AT THE BEGGINNING KOORAS is basically just THE big bad science organization..... the letters DO stand for something but i think that its pretty dumb so am not gonna say what it is..... u can read it as keronian organization omega ruby alpha sapphire if u want to though

Zama has such a cool, cool design and I’m legitimately impressed with how you’ve built her up. You can tell she’s a no nonsense girl which is a bit unfortunate considering what she has to deal with. Invader zim OCS who are at least decently competent being thrust into a world that doesn’t operate like that is my favorite thing to see and write about and I’m excited to see more of this au you both have created!

'Encoder' Zim AU Idea Thingy

ie, Cas is Trying to World Build this Invader Zim AU he wants Alicia and Steven to Write and the whole process has got him like this:

Putting the idea behind a cut but also tagging @paynomindtotheinsanity because this was heavily inspired by a conversation we had a few days about competent!Zim but also because her characterization of Zim is *chef's kiss* in Your Eyes Are Red.

So the real concept is that instead of “Invading” planets, Irkens are sent to various alien planets throughout the universe in order to study them. And then they “assimilate” them into the Irken Empire’s vast galactic Empire. 

The Irken Race are being guided by the “Control Brains” still – the Control Brains can do all the things that they can totally do in like – The Trial episode. But also note that Red (Savin) and Purple (Jazz) (like 00 version J&S where they are very, very sexually compatible but not necessarily compatible-compatible, especially as leaders, not that it matters because –) are basically puppet dictators – they know their role is just to be the public face for the Control Brains. 

The thing is – the Control Brains aren’t actually Irken. They’re humans who achieved immortality. I want to say two of them but honestly? I think they’re supposed to be the 8 richest human beings from this earth. They had so much wealth and power that they basically other humans into something unrecognizable…

Well, they turned them into Irkens.

Irkens are basically the like, Worker Bees of the giant Hive Mind the Control Brains worked really hard to create, and have been creating, for the past millennia. Irkens are used to MAINTAIN the hive. They go to planets and figure out what sorts of things its societies are doing “wrong” and how fractured each world is etc and learn the history / record the issues down and then pass the information to The Tallests. The Tallests then report this information to the Control Brains, who then decide the fate of those planets. 

(Read: The Control Brains then tell the Tallests that yes, these planets should be assimilated and that they need sooooo much help and guidance to learn how to have the besttttt livessssss ever and like…. the Encoders are supposed to facilitate that whole process, as well. Irkens live for many many years, they effectively don’t age because they’re genetically perfect, thanks to the cloning process, and the Paks make sure that everyone stays in LINE)

So rly – Paks keep Irkens Alive, they keep them In Line, and they essentially act as fucking thought police. 

Now – here’s where it’s gonna get a bit loopy. 

Irkens are Humans, right? The first race that the Control Brains assimilated into the Hive Mind? The same Hive Mind that essentially continues to feed the Control Brains desire to control EVERYTHING across the galaxy and continue to pile more and more money etc??? 

What happens if an Irken Encoder is sent, purposely, to Earth? 

Humans shouldn’t still exist, right? 

Yeah, tell that to planet Earth, circa year 2001. Humans are still there. Still “thriving.” 

Professor Membrane is studying Human Genetic Manipulation. He’s made two clones of himself – a boy, and a girl. They’re both him, they’re his kids, they’re fucked up. As all families are. 

Professor Membrane is also splicing Human Genetic Material with Other Species’ Genetic Material. 

Except he can’t test this shit on HUMAN subjects, because that shit’s unethical. 

Well… 

Except he can, though. 

He proved that he could clone himself, after all. Who’s to say he can’t just…. try to clone humans and manipulate their DNA that way? No one. He’s given free fucking rein because Dib and Gaz were the only “successful” human clones he’d produced, according to his research and the grants etc he was given to conduct this research, etc. 

Dib and Gaz may get to live long, happy lives (as they are human beings born with Privillege – Professor Membrane’s rich as fucking hell, obvs) – but they have an untold number of “siblings” they know nothing about. 

I can’t remember if it was Enter the Florpus that had Membrane working on a perpetual motion / energy machine? I think it was Enter the Florpus. 

Anyway, EtF more or less proves that the Earth IZ takes place on is part of a series of different AUs. Remember, there are other dimensions, too – A Room With A Moose, for example. So this isn’t all that weird of a thing. 

Thing is, these AUs exist together and overlap one another and Zim is sent to Encode Earth. Zim is a competent Irken Encoder; he has yet to fail at properly folding various planets in. He’s good at it. It essentially requires him to just conduct experiments on different races all day long and see how they work etc. 

He’s so good at it, he starts to notice weird shit about the Human Race, and about the planet in general. Features of it look familiar; bits of history sound familiar, etc. 

btw, he and Dib more or less have the SAME weird rival situationship happening – because Dib recognizes Zim as not a human being (“Does…. nobody see the alien sitting in class?”), and since Zim is competent at blending in and shit (and honestly? Yeah, he kinda IS in the show – at least with middle schoolers? he was REAL GOOD at getting the other kids to be on his side and not Dib’s). 

So Dib grew up the same fucking pariah in his class, with Zim like – falling into the “preps” – Drumline Captain for the marching band, etc. Like, Zim is popular. The girls want to date him. The boys want to be him, etc. Prom King material, right there.

They graduate. 

They go their separate ways. Dib becomes a paranormal investigator with the CIA (Swollen Eyeballs - Agent Mothman) and… 

Well, he’s given a mission to assassinate a certain scientist / researcher. Someone who’s putting too many puzzle pieces together and therefore threatens to completely collapse the human race and, quite honestly, the planet – especially if he ever gets his research published. Because this scientist / researcher has been working independently for at least a decade, and every single time he releases findings, Things Happen. 

The researcher / scientist / historian (lol) is Zim. 

Chaos ensues.

How are tak and zim relationship in this au, does she still hate him or are they friends?????

OK  YES! Lets Talk about Tak  I’ve Been Dyin to talk about Tak with you guys  

I’m going to put the direct answer to the question here (which is kind of long BUT it’s world building for the au)  and put my excited nerdy rant underneath the cut  that way if you don’t want to read it you don’t have to

Zim and Tak are technically cousins  (tak is about a year and a half older than him) but they were both young when taken in by Red and Purple so their relationship is more like siblings

Tak and Zim don’t really get along and fight constantly   But they are still family and care for eachother. They always look out for eachother.  Even though she isn’t really supposed to, Tak does keep in touch with Zim to make sure he is doing ok (and Zim really does appreciate that) 

SO In the show Irkens do not naturally reproduce  they are grown in pods  meaning they have no parents   which makes a human AU kind of hard because it means the family gets all weird and jumbled up and none of them have canon last names. 

SO in this AU Zim and Tak belong to a very extensive  and very powerful family   (Red and Purple are their biological Uncles   and are the heads of this family) 

Zim and Tak along with the other main Invaders (who were assigned roles in operation impending doom 2  in the beginning of episode one there are about 18 of them)  all for one reason or another live in the main estate of the family  and are raised by Red and Purple 

now, Zim was brought in to live with them because his parents died in an accident, but Tak was raised there from an even younger age than Zim to be trained to become one of the next heads of the family. Zim becoming emancipated and moving out is unheard of in the family  so it makes things very very complicated for Zim. 

As a fun little side note  Zim helped convince Red and Purple to let Tak keep Fifi (who she found as a stray sick kitten)   and when zim Moved out  Tak gave him her Jacket that zim loved so much (his purple one) 

NOW FOR MY NERDY RANT BELOW THE CUT

SO I’ve always had a bit of an issue with Tak in regards to invader Zim

Don’t get me wrong i LOVE Tak  She was one of the coolest antagonists in the show and one of my favorite characters, but the writing for her is kind of flawed

Tak is one of the only Irkens to actively face Zim head on  with revenge as a driving force for her actions.  She was competent, honestly very scary, and a force to be reckoned with.  A lot of the stories in Invader Zim are one and done type things, making the lines in the continuity a little blurred. But Tak’s ship stayed in the show’s continuity  with nothing really coming out of it.  Tak’s ship gave a sense of “Hey Tak is still out there  and she may be back” if not to fight Zim  then reclaim her ship 

But she never did    and honestly  I was kind of expecting to see her in Enter the Florpus when her ship seemed very keen on going to the prison planet Mooping 10  

But Tak just never comes up again   like  ever.  SO I feel like a good direction for Tak to go in character wise would be not to join Zim, but to join the resistance. After Tak failed in conquering the earth for the Tallest, she flees    humiliated and defeated.  But it’s very clear throughout the show that the tallest don’t care about anyone but themselves. Not Zim, not Tak, not any of the other Irkens, and the irkens are shown to be a cruel unforgiving race of overlords that don’t care about other species.  

I always felt like after this, it could be an eye opener  for Tak.  Make her realize just how awful the empire and the tallest are, and maybe have her join the Resisty. This would further show the power struggle between the parts of the universe the irkens conquered, and the irkens themselves.   I also feel like at some point this would warrant Tak to come retrieve her ship, and try and show zim the truth behind the tallest and his “Mission” on earth. creating an interesting character arc for Zim that many fans write about   and a good realistic example of a revolution and the collapse of an empire 

It always just left a super bitter taste in my mouth that this super cool character showed up   and basically disappeared forever. Tak had so much potential   and I absolutely loved her (even though her human design’s clothes were really weird) 

So I want to try and fix that in my AU    where Tak realizes the dark truth about the family, and sees the truth that Zim for the longest time refused to see.  So she decides to stand up and do something about it,  and starts by helping Zim get away from the family and live on his own

New Year New Me

I want to make a small New Years Resolution this year aimed specifically towards my role in the Sly Cooper fandom. It’s gonna be kinda long and venty so warning!! 

As a bit of backstory, I haven’t been in a fandom/actively drawing fanart since like... 2012 maybe? Like in terms of drawing fanart for the same series routinely. I went through a really stupid phase where I thought fanart was a waste of time because I had been hounded over and over again by peers and those I looked up to that only ORIGINAL © DO NOT STEAL content mattered. I looked down on fanart and used every excuse to belittle fanartists. I dunno if this was also in part due to the last fandom I was in being extremely toxic (that being the Invader Zim fandom. Booooois them 2006-2008 deviantART IZ days were something else) and my college experience constantly telling me “fanart in your portfolio is stinky bad no do that” (which is hotly debated btw).

Anyway... jumping into the Sly Cooper fandom has been extremely positive for me and helping me shed a lot of that negative attitude. Dare I say there was character development?! And while, for the most part, Sly fandom isn’t that toxic, there are elements of it that have caused much chaotic negativity within me that I am hoping to get rid of.

Maybe it’s a result of my former opinions about fanart, but I have always felt a sense of inadequacy, or as if I NEED to make my place in the fandom for me to be relevant and to matter. I have vented about this in the past. My first fanart piece was a compilation of my interpretations of the cast, and it was well received, and everyone talked about how they wanted me to draw more characters, to see more designs, etc. Which is why I said I wanted to redesign ALL the cast because the people DEMANDED IT!! This could be my way of placing myself in the fandom!!! HELL YEAH!!!

But it didn’t make me... happy, I guess? I DO enjoy redesigning, but when I do it under my own terms, with no pressure. I think coming out of art school made me put on blinders and tell myself what I used to believe in: “If you’re going to waste your time on fanart, better make it good. You know, people can hire you if you show good fanart! These redesigns could get you a job in the industry! You gotta ONLY do work that will benefit your end goal and nothing else!!” 

This often made me feel extreme guilt when I started drawing more of my Arpeggio content, or my Arpeggio AUs because despite how much fun I was having, that little voice in the back of my head was saying “No!! Stop drawing that!! Draw stuff that everyone will care about besides just you!!! You’re not going to get anywhere with this!! Drawing sexy Arpeggio won’t get you a job in the industry KJSNJKGNSKNGKJNAJ!!!!”

This mentality also crafted some uhh... extremely negative competitive attitudes towards other artists in the fandom. Certain artists would piss me off every time they posted to the point I would have to block them to stop seeing their work just to prevent these feelings. There is a notable artist I won’t name, but they do Sly redesigns too. I was fine with them initially, but after they blatantly stole one of my designs without crediting me I was LIVID. I called them out and they did apologize and changed the design, but every time I saw their work from then on out I had this insane urge to “beat them”. It was a sick competitive game. I felt jaded they ripped my design and kept getting popular anyway. TBH it’s rather petty and I am trying not to harbor any ill will towards them because I don’t think they meant anything by it and the design was rather insignificant in the whole scheme of things. But I still have them blocked or muted everywhere because I am still struggling to ignore that great urge every time I see their designs to drop everything I’m doing and draw my own redesigns out of unhealthy spite.

And I’m only briefly going to go over the god damn Deceit of Thieves drama. Apparently they are still making it into a legit game? They have a Patreon apparently and are posting stuff about it? I found out about that and the same sort of fiery rage filled me. But this was much less personal. Sure, I had given a critique to them but I honestly wanted the game/story/whatever to flourish? After seeing their poor reactions and being attacked by their white knights, my taste towards them grew bitter and I think my fellow Sly fans having the same bitterness fueled me to flat out grow a hatred for them. That’s kind of awful? I never expected to want another member of the fandom to have their project fail. What kind of asshole am I for wanting that?? I don’t want that. I want them to learn from their mistakes and make something great. Not hold some ridiculous resentment. I can decide not to support them if I wanted, but wishing failure is a whole other horrible thing.

So realizing this I knew I needed to... change my perspective on how I see myself in the fandom and how I process my feelings towards it. I don’t want to be here to produce soulless portfolio worthy content. I don’t want to compete with other artists or wish them ill. I just want to draw some god damn fanart of a series I love and that makes me happy! 

I’m posting this here as a way to hold accountability to myself and be honest. I started drawing Sly stuff again in 2017 so it’s been an issue appearing on and off the last 4 years and that’s... sad. It needs to end! I appreciate everyone in the fandom who has supported me in my endeavors, as ridiculous as they are. I can’t believe drawing and writing about a dumb bird man and cat lady and throwing my stupid OCs into the fray for my favorite childhood game has made me learn so much about myself, my work, and gained me so many great peers and friends. I definitely don’t want to stop any time soon! And I apologize profusely if I ever hurt anyone in some way because I lost sight of that (or was just a dick for whatever reason).

Ok ok, let me lay these out best of my recollection! 

Dion’s Boys: The slow progression on trust as they have to lean on each other whether they want to or not. You really feel their bonds growing over time.

Dnd AU: Fuckin poly boys being cute as hell and THEY ALL LOVE EACH OTHER FOR DIFFERENT REASONS AND PICK UP WHERE THE OTHERS ARE WEAK! Delicious. Very soft. Quite enjoy it. (my meddling bullshit notwithstanding). Novalise: Ok, ok. I love Jax. He’s just so shitty and terrible in the best way and he’s a tragic moron. I love the way that the siblings all interact with each other, and I can’t wait to see Dib and Jax in particular. :) Arms au: Membrane is a dumb ass but he is really, really, trying in a way that makes you root for him. He rises and falls in an incredibly human way, it’s beautiful and heart wrenching, truly a master work in finding a void and making it yours. 

Tech control: Computer is an unexpected delight whom I have grown fond of, thank you dana. You single handedly made me care about this tired, tired man. May he one day get the rest he deserves (brainbrane). 

Psychic Dib: Oh how I adore this au. The gentle horror of the fae, Dib’s competence, Keef’s competence, hell Keef’s emotional competence, it’s enthralling.

The Origin of Doomsday

Hello, everyone! I’m EMatooney and welcome to my side blog of my AU project: Doomsday!

As many people from the 2000s, we all had that one weird phase we were into, and that was Invader Zim. C’mon admit it! We all had our fair share of cringe. As for me, I was a HUGE Invader Zim fan. I was completely obsessed as a child, I had scarfs, shirts, I’d even try to dress up as Zim and run around pretending to be him. And… there were also many fanfictions I wrote BUT BESIDES THAT. I was extremely obsessed. But as time went on, I grew out of it and got into other things instead. Zim became a distant childhood memory and a cringey one at that. Everytime I’d think about Zim my whole body would cringe as all those memories would come crashing back. Not fun.

So, that leaves us with one question: How did you get back into it? And the answer to that is:

By sheer embarrassment and self loathing.

Last year I was at my job doing my business when a little thought came into my mind. It was Invader Zim. Immediately I tried to push the thought away but it kept coming back like a little damn cockroach. So, I did what any rational person would do! I decided to draw him. But with a twist. I drew him as how I would perceive him. In the show, Zim is a complete fucking idiot but believe it or not he's actually really good at killing people. No, I’m not kidding! When Zim is actually being competent he can be terrifying! I mean, have you SEEN Dark Harvest?!? Oh, and what about that time when he, oh I dunno, RIPPED OUT KEEF’S EYEBALLS? Or when he did literal dissection on a fetus in HIS CLASS. Or that time he launched a chicken to space while taunting it or turning that man into a squid? Not to mention WHEN HE ACTUALLY KILLED DIB IN ONE EPISODE. Need I say more?

Zim is a monster, he is insane. If you take away those moments of him being an idiot he could be the most terrifying person on the entire show. So, that’s what I drew, a scary, edgy competent version of Zim. And when I saw this drawing something in my head clicked. I… actually like this. That’s when I made the most dumbest idea I’ve ever made in my entire life. The most dumbest, batshit insane idea I’ve ever come up with.

“What if I made an Invader Zim AU?”

And that my friends is how Doomsday was born. Pretty pathetic, am I right? Well, I would say that if I had any sort of sanity left but I’ve fallen this far from grace so to hell with it. Honestly though, even though Doomsday came from dumb idea it’s also a bit of a love letter to Jhonen Vasquez. He’s been thrown in the wringer with Nickelodeon and it’s honestly pretty sad! I mean, imagine you create your own series and you’ve put a lot of love and care into it, right? You put it in and it gets made into a TV show, and as soon as you get to work the higher ups tell you, “Oh, no we can’t have that. That’s too dark for kids, you’ll need to change it.” And they just keep changing your story over and over and over. A story you worked so hard to make, a story that has so much meaning to you and you aren’t even allowed to express your true creativity. That’s fucked up! Fuck Nickelodeon for that! I feel so sorry for Jhonen and all he’s been through. That’s another reason why I made this AU. To somewhat bring Jhonen’s original version of Invader Zim to life with a twist of my own. And also a big middle finger to Nickelodeon, honestly, fuck them.

Now, do I expect this AU to get popular? Probably not. I’d like for it to! Do I expect to get made fun of? Yes. Undoubtedly. And I welcome it.

Even though this series has brought me so much joy and crippling embarrassment, I have to say one more thing. Thank you, Jhonen. Thank you for creating Invader Zim. You have brought me and so many others joy because of your show. Invader Zim has been a major part of my life and has even got me through the darkest moments. Even though I want to punt him across the field like a football, I love Zim and even though he couldn’t invade the world, he invaded my heart. Thank you.

What would you think of a tak zim and dib ship? I actually considered writing a fic about it cause I had a point where it sounded like a good ship, still does, but I find it really difficult to understand, but I wouldn't really be sure how to write them, actually how do you write the zim dib and keef ship?

So, fun fact: When I first got on tumblr at 12-going-on-13, I actually liked DaTr more than ZaDr! However, I was never really much a fan of ZaTr- I guess I just couldn’t find the appeal yet. More under the cut because this got weirdly long and I talked myself into liking it, OOPS. Mostly about Tak bc y’all already know how I like ZaDr. For my analysis for kazadr, you can just go into my kazadr tag, it’s pretty short atm and I don’t have a ton to add to the analysis posts in there yet. (The ‘aip dad keef au’ one is longer and has more, but has aip stuff like mpreg, depends on if that floats your boat or not.)

I think she’s only fun if you play into the fact that she’s objectively defective too- she spent SIX MONTHS traveling to some backwater hellhole just to ruin the life of a guy who didn’t know she existed and who the Tallests themselves sent her, no matter how much she insists it isn’t ‘about revenge’. She had to know Zim’s mission was fake if she even knew where he was, especially considering her comment about how the Tallests don’t consider Earth valuable. She’s desperate and clings to her own ideals and is in denial about her own defects because she’s actually competent- she’s sort of like Zim in that way, in that she’s sure what she wants is what’s better for the Empire, no matter what everyone else says she should do. In her case, she’s probably right, but she’s still clearly more ruled by emotion than she’s willing to admit considering she didn’t just take her job on Dirt.

The Empire works against both of them, but in Zim’s case, it’s all his own fault because when he IS trusted it never works out, but in hers, it’s frustratingly out of her hands. Zim just brushes aside when he isn’t supposed to do things because surely whatever he does will work out because he’s Zim, she knows full well that she’s going against orders but overprepares so it will be considered impressive enough to forgive the transgression. They’re kind of on the same scale, Zim’s just unaware of the possibility of failure while she knows it all too well.

She relates to him more than she’d like to admit- or more than he’d realize. It’d infuriate her to know that, though- she’s Tak, she’s not a defect like him! But his distaste of her comes mostly from her trying to steal his mission- if they were able to find a way to meet without aggression and she actually had to sit down and listen to him, really listen and strip past all the pomp and idiocy, there’s sparks of genius down there that she unwittingly would admire a bit. Likewise, he could admit that there’s something to be said for her plan and her skills, skills that the Empire was basically wasting. Like his! They might be a good team, if she apologizes for trying to take his mission!

Huh. I think I just talked myself into not minding it.

Anyway, as for all three of them: I liked DaTr both because they disliked Zim and because by the end of the series, Dib’s attitude of ‘well, no one is going to respect me, but at least I can do this to feel half-decent about myself and because no one else is competent enough to’ would dovetail nicely with the resignation she’d probably have if she was stranded on Earth or otherwise kept from rejoining the empire. The Membrane family are the only humans she half-respects because they proved themselves capable of standing up to her tech and figuring out her plan, so she ends up sort of studying him as a potential tool. Most likely she pretends to have a truce and uses it to study his weaknesses for future betrayal but finds a kindred spirit in the process. 

Whichever one she ends up with first, they basically come as a package deal, so she’s got to get used to both of them. Maybe they all end up bonding over working on machinery together? She cobbled her own SIR together, after all, probably out of literal trash- she’s likely quite a good mechanic, so having partners prove they’re good at something is a good step. 

Even more than Zim, she’d resist and resist HARD the thought that love and affection is something that she can experience. She’s not like Zim, she’s a normal irken, and those things simply don’t exist for someone like her... right? Nevermind how she treats MiMi, nevermind how she abandoned her post to seek out someone who’d already been considered adequately dealt-with by the Tallest themselves. She’s never been quite comfortable just being an interchangeable piece in the machine. A piece, sure- she was eager to become a soldier, and one of the most important soldiers- but not an interchangeable one. She was going to help propel the Empire to greatness even if she had to bend a few rules to do it, and hearing her own thoughts echoed out of Zim’s mouth just drives her hackles up, because how dare he try and pretend they’re the same? 

She doesn’t know how to process that affection when she’s given it, and it probably has to start with them gaining her respect before she even considers letting them close enough to have the crisis over affection. It’s an awkward, fumbly thing- Dib’s no good at this, Zim’s even worse, and she just freaks out at the realization that she actually kind of does want this??? Maybe??? DID THEY SOMEHOW GET INTO HER PAK AND INFECT IT WITH GOOPY WARM THINGS, WHAT IS THIS.

They’d have to start with mutual understanding and truce first- it’s very much an enemies to friends to lovers over the enemies to lovers speedrun I kinda like with ZaDr. It’s only when they spend so much together because none of them are particular fans of humanity and only feel like the others understand them that they begin to bond, and then as Dib ages, his feelings get mixed up, and it ends up dragging the other two into that with him as they’re the only two that he really spends much time with and enjoys the company enough to like and begin fumbling through the first stages of an actual romantic relationship with.

Invader Zim Space Explorers AU

(Hello! This is my Invader Zim AU that I’ve finally gathered enough confidence to post. This AU is very self indulgent and open ended, but maybe it’ll make some of y’all happy as well. I wish I knew sooner that there are similar AUs to this one, however I hope to make this AU as original as possible and really make it my own. Established ZaDf and maybe potential ZaDr? Anyway, let’s get on with it.)

The Summary:

After the whole Enter the Florpus fiasco... nothing much changes for a while. Dib and Zim continue to fight, Zim continues to try to take over the Earth... however, Zim is now unable to get in touch with the Tallest, possibly because they’re still in the dreaded Florpus hole. During this time, Dib over time is able to piece together that Zim is basically a reject from his own planet, and has been exiled under the guise that he’s been given the title of an invader. Zim figures this out soon after, but is in obvious denial of it.

After these realizations, Zim and Dib begin to fight less. In fact, they start talking a lot more. They sit together at lunch a lot. Dib’s attempts at exposing Zim lessen, as well as Zim’s nefarious plans to take over the Earth. Dib even sometimes invites Zim over to his house. After a few attempts, Zim accepts the invitation, much to Dib’s surprise. They often play video games together, Gaz even sometimes joins in. Dib and Zim have went cryptid hunting a few times. At one point, Zim allowed Dib to enter his base (after making sure Dib had no way to take pictures, of course.) GIR was overjoyed.

After they both graduate from high skool, Dib explains to Zim that he has no plans to go to college, much to his father’s dismay. He basically has no plans for the future, besides maybe becoming a cryptozoologist. Zim, in a sudden moment of faith, admits to Dib that he really has nowhere to go, and is in the same boat. That’s when they both agree to leave Earth and explore the depths of space.

The two of them have no one final destination in mind. They travel through different galaxies, making and meeting both friends and enemies along the way. To keep supplies fresh, they often stop at intelligent alien planets, and take different quests and missions (although this doesn’t always go well, Zim being an Irken and all). They’ve had some near death experiences, but have so far thankfully avoided death. Of course, they haven’t completely abandoned Earth. Once a month they’ll return to spend a day or two with Gaz at home, and check up on Zim’s base.

So... what about the Irken Empire? Well, that’s a big unknown right now. Zim can’t establish a connection with the tallest, and both Zim and Dib aren’t planning on paying Irk a visit anytime soon. They can only pick up clues that have been learned by other alien species. All they’ve heard so far is that the Irken Empire is currently having a moment of weakness, and that the Resisty has been becoming more powerful... perhaps Dib and Zim will discover more in the future.

What of Professor Membrane and Gaz? Well, Membrane has been trying to work on becoming a better father, but has been just as busy in his lab. He does his best to visit his kids whenever he (very rarely) has free time, and always tries to visit on major holidays. Gaz is pretty much in charge of the house now, though Membrane sends her money to keep the lights working and such. Gaz has now upgraded her Game Slave to even better consoles, and regularly competes in competitive video game competitions, where she usually absolutely decimates her opponents. When she’s not busy with a tournament, she’ll sometimes join Dib and Zim’s space adventures (albeit for a shorter amount of time).

Some additional details that vary in importance:

Zim is still technically loyal to the Irken Empire, and finds himself angered hearing about the Resisty. Dib, on the other hand, super doesn’t mind

Dib has a bit of a messiah complex, which was built from feeling like he was the only person that could protect Earth from Zim

Zim and Dib very often get into arguments and fights (that’ll never change) but they’re never apart for too long

Zim becomes a bit more emotionally literate

Zim sometimes even allows Dib to pilot the Voot... not for long, though

Zim, mainly noticing that Dib is becoming older and his appearance is changing, has worried many times about Dib’s weak, fleshy human skin and his laughable lifespan. Perhaps... there could be something Zim could do about this...
