"Hector was a good man" "diomedes was an honorable man" BZZZT WRONG. Diomedes was there to steal, burn, and wage war same as the next person. In fact, he was pretty adamant about it. Hector had no issue with the greek's actions, merely that they were directed at him—I mean look at what he wanted to do with patroclus's body, only to then cite respect for funeral rites when it was his own turn to die. Hector also owned slaves within his own city walls—people that he likely took from their homes during troy's own conquests. All that seperated him and the greek warriors was which side they were on.
The Iliad isn't a story about morally upstanding men. Sure, it has men who have honor and perform honorable acts, but these are not good samaritans. It's is a story about war and grief and the real victims of fights between so-called-honorable men and gods. The urge to find a "good guy" in this story is wasted. Hector doesn't have to be morally good just because achilles isn't. Troy didn't lose because they were more or less evil than the greeks. It all just. Is. Because of fate? Because the gods said so? Because people will always make disastrous mistakes and it will always end up biting not only them, but everyone else around them? Who knows? In the end though, doesn't it all feel so pointless in the face of the endless amounts of grief and destruction that war leaves behind? Maybe that's the whole point
#who knows if thats the point homer wanted to make#but with our modern lens#thats the lesson that is the takeaway#the urge to create a good and a bad side is useless here#hector being a loving father doesnt change that hes a warrior#in a city state that came to power by trampling and enslaving surrounding regions#diomedes being obedient to athena and brave to a fault doesn't absolve him from the acts of the greeks of which he was a willing participan#its not about good vs evil#its about greeks vs trojans#and about how pointless that really is#achilles#hector#diomedes#the iliad#homer#the song of achilles#odysseus#agamemnon#hector of troy#diomedes of argos#all that being said#despite achilles being my fave i tend to see the trojans side more#they r dirty little conquerors same as the greeks BUT in this instance they are the defenders so I have some sympathy for them#greek mythology

this whole "turning over a new leaf" thing might end up a shockingly uphill battle
[ Description in ALT ]
#ggg#great god grove#ggg spoilers#great god grove spoilers#inspekta#ggg inspekta#ggg hector#hector ggg#his intentions are good after snapping out but i feel like the fears may only end up being exacerbated#i'm sure he'll have enough resolve to overcome this Eventually but goddamn i don't think internally this will be any easier than#making amends externally. obviously im not trying to overlook what's been done; i can just sympathize with this possibly haunting him for#the rest of his mortal life; unless he hops into godhood again. then it'll just haunt him forever!#im not transcribing the whole text because it's not really meant to be fully parsed to begin with. the ALT just has the summary

Really have to assume that anyone saying hector didn't deserve to die the way he did didn't actually read the Iliad
#i mean first of all none of them deserved to die so jot that down#entire book is about how pointless and tragic war is#but beyond that hectors slaying of Patroclus#was just as dishonorable as Achilles killing hector#just because he failed to decapitate pat and feed him to the dogs#doesnt somehow make him morally better#also the fight over pats body did mutilate him to an extent#that corpse went through it#did hectors end up going through more?#probably#doesn't really change much#the iliad#tumblr showing me lukewarm takes at six am#my kryptonite#morning me does not know how to not write an essay about it#afternoon me is better at letting it go#homer#tagamemnon

I think the Iliad does a splendid job of showcasing the humanity in war. I mean this as a sense of people being people, there are no ‘good guys.’ It’s clear that everyone has a life, and everyone has something to lose. Before his death, Pandarus talks of his home, and the regrets he has about the horses, and breaking the truce. He clearly regrets what he did. Another scene is with Diomedes and Glaucus, where they both realize their families were once friendly with each other, and refuse to fight one another, with Diomedes even putting his spear down. Not to mention the scene of Hector playing with his son, where Astyanax gets scared by his father’s armor. The scene ends with Hector even hoping his son turns out to be more skilled than himself. Probably a little silly for me to point out something so obvious, but I needed to ramble about it (my friends and family are very tired of me talking about this book) ALSO DID YOU KNOW PRIAM APPARENTLY HAD 100 KIDS??? BECAUSE I DIDN’T.
#the iliad#Diomedes#pointing out really obvious stuff here#uhhhh#hector of troy#sighs I really love this book#Worried I’m making myself look stupid sob#IT’S ALMOST 5 AM

Wikipedia tells me one of the meanings of the name Andromache is "man-battler".
Andromache is named such that she fights against men. All the men in her family get killed. Her father, her brothers, her husband and even her son. IIRC, in contrast, her mother lives and dies naturally at her father's house. With the exception of Astynax, all the men are killed by Achilles.
I'M TEARING MY HAIR OUT!!!
Homer. Homer I'm shaking you by the shoulders. WHY DOES ANDROMACHE NOT KILL ANYONE WHYYYY??? SUCH HARDSHIP FOR MY GIRL AND SHE CAN'T EVEN KILL PEOPLE IN A WAR??? SHE SHOULD'VE BEEN ALLOWED TO STRANGLE ACHILLES!!!
#why homer whyyy#i'm crying#the iliad fandom is sleeping on hector and andromache#the more I read the more I hate the Greeks#and even more I hate Priam#but most importantly#I really hate Achilles#patroclus deserved better than whatever this is#i don't get the hype#iliad#the iliad#homer#hector#hector of troy#andromache of troy#andromache#hector x andromache#greek mythology#greek myths#iliadposting#tagamemnon

Honestly every time I see the Greeks portrayed as feeling bad for all the war crimes they’ve done in Troy it reminds me of this:
#it’s not that it can’t be done well or that there isn’t any basis to it in ancient sources#but to center the men who caused the suffering and never stopped causing it#and only feeling bad after all is said and done feels iffy to me#like no idgaf If Agamemnon and Odysseus felt bad bc they should feel bad#so every time I see a retelling portraying them as ‘cartoonishly evil’ I’m like yeah that tracks#real life war criminals really are that evil it’s been crystal clear especially the last few months with the genocide in Gaza#greek mythology#ancient greek mythology#greek pantheon#agamemnon#odyssey#Odysseus#tagamemnon#Achilles#patroclus#Iliad#Troy#the Iliad#Trojan war#cassandra of troy#hector and andromache#andromache of troy#astyanax#neoptolemus#diomedes#briseis#Clytemnestra
