"Our lives begin to end when we become silent about things that matter."- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr The clock is ticking. Now is the time for less talking and more walking. More action. More digging deep. More finding motivation. More humanity. No more excuses. Get out there and vote! Who are you speaking for today? If you need a reason to vote: 🗳 Black lives still matter 🗳 Brown kids don't belong in cages 🗳 Education not segregation 🗳 End school to prison pipeline 🗳 No one is illegal on stolen land 🗳 No taxation w/o representation 🇵🇷 🗳 LGBTQIA+ are humans too 🗳 Fair and equal pay for everyone 🗳 Rehabilitation not Mass incarceration 🗳 Women are entitled to agency over their own bodies and health 🗳 Healthcare is a human right 🗳 Climate change is real 🗳 Defund and retrain the police 🗳 200,000+ Americans are dead 👟👟 SYNOPSIS 👟👟 In the stunning and hard-hitting sequel to the New York Times bestseller Dear Martin, incarcerated teen Quan writes letters to Justyce about his experiences in the American prison system. Shortly after teenager Quan enters a not guilty plea for the shooting death of a police officer, he is placed in a holding cell to await trial. Through a series of flashbacks and letters to Justyce, the protagonist of Dear Martin, Quan's story unravels. From a troubled childhood and bad timing to a coerced confession and prejudiced police work, Nic Stone's newest novel takes an unflinching look at the flawed practices and ideologies that discriminate against African American boys and minorities in the American justice system. #votingmatters #vote2020 #votenow #blacklivesmatter #readBlackstories #nicstone #dearjustyce #ownvoices #supportBlackbooks #bookdragon #supportBlackauthors #bookstagram #booksandsneakers #booksarelife #bookworm #bookphotos #booknerd #useyourvoice #exerciseyourrights (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CG8Y6SIgGcA/?igshid=gtdpxeprked

What beautiful bookmail! Thank you so much @authoraliciadwilliams for all the details and the personal note. I cannot tell you how excited I am to read this one. Every day I love middle grade books more and more specifically because they tackle the hard topics in realistic and heart warming ways. They say the things that were in our hearts when we were growing up. In Genesis Begins Again, the topic of colorism is front and center in this coming of age story. Being latinx, I'm no stranger to the topic because the anti-blackness runs rampant through our communities as well. This is exactly why I am so grateful that books like this exist. We get an in depth view into the internalized effects of colorism and we get to confront the harmful narratives. We help young people see themselves when we share these stories with them. QOTD: What other books are you picking up about this topic along with Genesis? 💐💐💐SYNOPSIS💐💐💐 This is the story of a thirteen-year-old girl who is filled with self-loathing and must overcome internalized racism and a verbally abusive family to finally learn to love herself. There are ninety-six things Genesis hates about herself. She knows the exact number because she keeps a list. Like #95: Because her skin is so dark, people call her charcoal and eggplant—even her own family. And #61: Because her family is always being put out of their house, belongings laid out on the sidewalk for the world to see. When Genesis reaches #100 on the list of things she hates about herself, will she continue on, or can she find the strength to begin again? #genesisbeginsagain #middlegrade #aliciadwilliams #blacklivesmatter #readBlackstories #blackresilience #diversifyyourreading #bookstagram #weneeddiversebooks #readMGlit #supportblackauthors #colorism #fallvibes #booksoutside #bookmail #atheneum #decolonizeyourfeed #comingofage #bookdragon #books #bibliophile #readingislearning (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGs9u66Awbb/?igshid=1str3cjk9vlr0

"The mind works such that we see and perceive new things always through the lens of what we have already seen". In Memorial Drive, Natasha Trethewey reckons with her mother's murder at the hands of her stepfather. She revisits her memories and recalls events in order to make sense of the tragedy. She relives pivotal moments and relies on the psychology of her mind during those times to analyze and move towards acceptance of what happened to her mother. She comes to terms with her guilt and silence as a child forced to bear so much trauma and pain. She propels herself back in time to walk through not only her own story but her mother's to gain clarity about her life. Her writing is exquisite and it is obvious that she was born to be a poet. The prose pulls at your heart strings and you feel her emotions on a visceral level. I was emotionally destroyed by the end of it but it left me with a deeper understanding of trauma and the after effects. What I also appreciated about the author's story was that is was also a story of identity and search for belonging. The author is biracial and her parents were married illegally during the era of miscegenation laws. She talks extensively throughout the story about growing up during segregation and racism and how she was taught to act when navigating through both worlds that make up her identity. Her mother's love was the constant through her journey to make her mark in the world. When her mother is killed, the author begins to question if she could have prevented it in some way. She recalls her many anxieties and premonitions as a child and recounts how intuitive children can be when in contact with trauma and a sense of danger. She also illuminates how difficult it is to trust your own instincts and speak out when you are young. Natasha's story will stay with me for a long time to come because her emotions were so raw yet insightful. It will challenge me not to discount my trauma and emotions in my own life. This bookdragon rates it 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. #blacklivesmatter #blackresilence #readblackstories #supportblackart #weneeddiversebooks #blackmemoir #bookstagram #readbooksinthepark #takebooksoutside #bookishphotos #reading (at Juniper Valley Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDrzvjogy6o/?igshid=17a12k53xp879

Giveaways and bookmail make me so happy! Thanks to @as_seen_in_life for hosting this giveaway! I cannot wait to read this story! I hear it is a tear jerker. QOTD: What is a book that made you cry? *****SYNOPSIS (GOODREADS): ***** A chillingly personal and exquisitely wrought memoir of a daughter reckoning with the brutal murder of her mother at the hands of her former stepfather, and the moving, intimate story of a poet coming into her own in the wake of a tragedy At age nineteen, Natasha Trethewey had her world turned upside down when her former stepfather shot and killed her mother. Grieving and still new to adulthood, she confronted the twin pulls of life and death in the aftermath of unimaginable trauma and now explores the way this experience lastingly shaped the artist she became. With penetrating insight and a searing voice that moves from the wrenching to the elegiac, Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Natasha Trethewey explores this profound experience of pain, loss, and grief as an entry point into understanding the tragic course of her mother’s life and the way her own life has been shaped by a legacy of fierce love and resilience. Moving through her mother’s history in the deeply segregated South and through her own girlhood as a “child of miscegenation” in Mississippi, Trethewey plumbs her sense of dislocation and displacement in the lead-up to the harrowing crime that took place on Memorial Drive in Atlanta in 1985. Memorial Drive is a compelling and searching look at a shared human experience of sudden loss and absence but also a piercing glimpse at the enduring ripple effects of white racism and domestic abuse. Animated by unforgettable prose and inflected by a poet’s attention to language, this is a luminous, urgent, and visceral memoir from one of our most important contemporary writers and thinkers. #amplifymelanatedvoices #books #blacklivesmatter #readblackstories #bookdandplants #readmemoirs #bookmailisthebestmail #bookworm #giveawaywin #bookdragon #biblio #bookstagram #bookphotography #booksinnature #readdiversebooks #booksbooksbooks #blackauthor (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CC9x1DFA9Z0/?igshid=2jgr0cmntnjn

"Navigating in a space that questions your humanity isn't really living at all. It's existing. We all deserve more than just the ability to exist." Day 21 of #blackresilencebookstatour and the prompt is Favorite LGBTQ+ Author or Book. All Boys Aren't Blue is such an important read. George Johnson covers so many important topics through the telling of his story. He walks us through his family, his most important personal experiences, personal traumas and more importantly his resilience and perseverance to make his own way and forge his own identity. His voice is empowering and encouraging and I truly believe this book will save lives. He is honest and transparent in sharing his struggles with the intersectionalism of blackness and queerness. He challenges gender norms, traditional sex education, sexuality, blackness, queerness, family, unconditional love and forgiveness. He refers to his work as a manifesto and with today's cultural and political climate I can see why. He is bold and intentional with his words yet offers hope at the same time. This is one book that needs to be required reading by every educator and parent to gain understanding of today's youth that may be feeling unwanted, unloved and discarded by society for simply trying to be who they are. I cried so many tears for George yet at the same time smiled and cheered every small victory and step he took in creating his own identity. If you only read one YA book all year, I recommend this one. You will be completely transformed after being informed which is so important. Representation and visibility in literature not only validates but it can also instill purpose and provide hope to one who is fighting to just keep living. I know that many will feel seen after reading this beautifully written memoir. This bookdragon rates this one 🔥🔥🔥🔥.5 flames but no amount of words I have can justify how beautiful and necessary this book is. #blackresiliencebookstatour #books #LGBTQIA #pridebooks #bookworm #bookstagram #bookssavelives #blacklivesmatter #readblackstories #representationmatters #bookphoto #diversespines #booksandplants #bookdragon #bookreview #bookish (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CC7GRooANjU/?igshid=ob7njtws1ele

Today's weather has me imagining I'm in the Caribbean. I recently won this as a giveaway and I can't wait to read it soon. Thank you for hosting @barksbeachesbooks! QOTD: What is your idea of fun in the sun? *****SYNOPSIS (Amazon)***** All of London is abuzz with the scandalous case of Frannie Langton, accused of the brutal double murder of her employers, renowned scientist George Benham and his eccentric French wife, Marguerite. Crowds pack the courtroom, eagerly following every twist, while the newspapers print lurid theories about the killings and the mysterious woman being tried at the Old Bailey. The testimonies against Frannie are damning. She is a seductress, a witch, a master manipulator, a whore. But Frannie claims she cannot recall what happened that fateful evening, even if remembering could save her life. She doesn’t know how she came to be covered in the victims’ blood. But she does have a tale to tell: a story of her childhood on a Jamaican plantation, her apprenticeship under a debauched scientist who stretched all bounds of ethics, and the events that brought her into the Benhams’ London home—and into a passionate and forbidden relationship. Though her testimony may seal her conviction, the truth will unmask the perpetrators of crimes far beyond murder and indict the whole of English society itself. #readcaribbean #readblackstories #weneeddiversebooks #bookstagram #booksandflowers #readingoutside #supportblackauthors #Jamaica #bibliophile #booksarelife #nerdlife #bookdragon #books #bookaddict #escapeinabook #readingbooksisfun #blacklivesmatter #readdiversebooks (at Middle Village) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCzMN2mg1oY/?igshid=1kuejxs8o5a3g

"Culture does not make people. People make culture. If it is true that the full humanity of women is not our culture, then we can and must make it our culture." - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Today is Day 17 of @prettylittlebookshelf 's #blackresilencebookstatour and the prompt is favorite self empowerment/development book by a black author. I listened to this one audio and boy oh boy was I wowed! Not only is Chimamanda's narration sent from heaven but her ideas about gender norms and intersection with toxic masculinity ignited a flame of conscious thought in me. She posits that instead of simply focusing on one gender, the framework of thinking and ways that we educate about gender needs to change as a whole. Women are taught that their empowerment is always attributed to some form of male approval, such as the male gaze, suitability for marriage and childbearing, being domestic etc but no one ever thinks about what the world would be like if people were treated as individuals with autonomy and dreams and interests of their own that ate valid. This book was thought provoking even in its' short length and critiques how ideas of masculinity are shaped by the ways that women are engendered and the high pressures and uninformed standards that society sets for men. It was interesting to hear her suggestions on how to combat the structure of rigid gendered norms and how a society can foster empowered individuals by giving them the tools they need as human beings, rather than what we think they need to know based on gender. What really stuck out to me is the idea that in order to make sustained change we have to consistently question our motivations and ways of thinking. This book is a manifesto for life and should be considered required reading. This bookdragon rates this 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. #blacklivesmatter #readblackstories #supportblackauthors #diversereader #feminismisforeveryone #bechanged #empowerwomen #feminismispower #thinkoutsidethebox #readandthink #bookworm #bookdragon #booknerd #breakingbarriers #breaktheceiling #booksandplants #succulents #audiobooks #listentowomen (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCwcl0zAGZq/?igshid=fzi4yobgtif0
