Tourist Town

On October 6, we took our visiting Portland friends to the Highline, which managed to be horribly crowded despite rain.

I couldn't help telling wistful stories of "urban exploration." I remember what the Highline was like before. A magical secret garden. Such a privilege to see it in those days. I expect they'll put a tourist walkway through the freedom tunnel soon enough.

Exploring isn't dead, though. But going from a busy city street to a meadow riotous with wildflowers? Nothing like that exists now.

It's nice when people visit since you end up explaining things that are remarkable... that have come to seem normal to you. Our guests asked where all the soil came from and I explained how slowly over time trash, seeds, leaves, collected on the elevated tracks. The plants grew and died. The trash composted, more and more species arrived on the air. Rats, roaches, mice, pigeons left their waste and their bodies behind, and soon there was soil for more substantial plants and even trees.
