“There is a people who have, for hundreds of years, been expected to do much with less. We have collectively risen to the occasion, over…and over…and over again. And those of us who trust the Most High manifest an undeniable resilience desired by those who watch us, work with us, take from us, and more. God we thank you for your hand remaining on us and providing favor and opportunity for us. May you forever be worshipped by us.” - Sulena #SOBlack #BlackHistoryMonth #blackheritage #melaninrich #blackculture #blackresilience #blacklegacy #blackfamily #dedicatedtothosewholosttheirlivesfightingforus #AfricanAmerican #life #Black #Race #Ethnicity #BlackLivesMatter #BLM #resilience #blackbusinessowner #boss #ceo #beatingtheodds #womanceo #blackfemale #blackfemaleceo #blackfemaleboss #boss #lyl https://www.instagram.com/p/CZr396ilmLV/?utm_medium=tumblr

What beautiful bookmail! Thank you so much @authoraliciadwilliams for all the details and the personal note. I cannot tell you how excited I am to read this one. Every day I love middle grade books more and more specifically because they tackle the hard topics in realistic and heart warming ways. They say the things that were in our hearts when we were growing up. In Genesis Begins Again, the topic of colorism is front and center in this coming of age story. Being latinx, I'm no stranger to the topic because the anti-blackness runs rampant through our communities as well. This is exactly why I am so grateful that books like this exist. We get an in depth view into the internalized effects of colorism and we get to confront the harmful narratives. We help young people see themselves when we share these stories with them. QOTD: What other books are you picking up about this topic along with Genesis? 💐💐💐SYNOPSIS💐💐💐 This is the story of a thirteen-year-old girl who is filled with self-loathing and must overcome internalized racism and a verbally abusive family to finally learn to love herself. There are ninety-six things Genesis hates about herself. She knows the exact number because she keeps a list. Like #95: Because her skin is so dark, people call her charcoal and eggplant—even her own family. And #61: Because her family is always being put out of their house, belongings laid out on the sidewalk for the world to see. When Genesis reaches #100 on the list of things she hates about herself, will she continue on, or can she find the strength to begin again? #genesisbeginsagain #middlegrade #aliciadwilliams #blacklivesmatter #readBlackstories #blackresilience #diversifyyourreading #bookstagram #weneeddiversebooks #readMGlit #supportblackauthors #colorism #fallvibes #booksoutside #bookmail #atheneum #decolonizeyourfeed #comingofage #bookdragon #books #bibliophile #readingislearning (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGs9u66Awbb/?igshid=1str3cjk9vlr0

My mother introduced me to the poetry of Maya Angelou when I was a young girl. This beautiful, captivating painting by @artbywak reminds me of the poem “And Still I Rise” You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you? Don’t you take it awful hard ’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I’ve got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise. Maya Angelou #Repost @artbywak with @repostsaveapp · · · My latest..." Yesterday I participated in a wonderful running event organized by @movementblackaugust that highlighted the importance of black lives in a running context, and specifically looked at how black and brown bodies move through public spaces. The event kicked off at the @weeksvilleheritagecenter, a cultural institution in Brooklyn (that I am fortunate enough to live across the street from) created to preserve and share the history of the Bed-Stuy/Crown Heights neighborhood called Weeksville, which happens to be one of the first free black communities established in America during the 19th century. Listen as Zenzele Cooper, Tour Educator, shares info about some of the institutions members of the Weeksville community created to support and uplift its people. I moved to Weeksville specifically because of the history of resistance and social activism in this community, which is surprisingly still be uncovered thanks to the work of the Center. Indeed, it was uplifting to run through the various neighborhoods in Brooklyn, some of which have been identified as former sites along the Underground Railroad--a symbol of freedom for many. I encourage folks, especially those that live in or near Bedstuy and Crown Heights, to visit and support the Center in its efforts to continue to uncover the history of this revolutionary community, and help shape the narrative around how black and brown bodies existed even in the face of subjugation and terrorization against our bodies...✊🏿✊🏽✊🏾 . . . #movementblackaugust #weeksville #lovemyhood #weeksvilleheritagecenter #bedstuy #crownheights #blacklivesmatter #behavingwhileblack #blackbodies #blackhistory #theundergroundrailroad #freedom #blackresistance #blackresilience #blackexcellence #blackbusinesses #blackschools #blackcommunity (at Weeksville Heritage Center)

it’s a joy to be educated at an HBCU. I grew so much at Howard, and I gained a legion of black folks who I still have relationships with, till today. black knowledge liberates us all, and allows for deep critical thinking about the existence of black people in history, in the present, and in the future. At Howard University, I worked with brilliant women in my laboratory with Dr. Mark Burke, my PI. they all helped me develop my critical thinking and I learned about science research and how intensive it can be — organic lab is no joke, right, pre-med students? well, laboratory work isn’t any different and requires meticulousness. I also evolved due to my peers @virginiaaimiuwu @salma.m123 @_its.niaa three black women who are still trailblazing through life. thank you three for helping me, and pushing me to grow - this is what I left Howard with after my second summer there - a research publication in a small scientific journal named Biomolecules. and…I’m still struggling to make something of myself because of the barriers in my life due to my health. please consider that - anyone who knows me and how cerebral I can be says that I’m capable. people with disabilities are struggling to earn their position in society, and for so long now. health is what ties us all together, and we will all experience, at one point or another, what it is like to be ill or infirm. think about that; and then consider why society continues to push us to the periphery like we don’t contribute to this culture. we’re here and nothing about us should be done without us. #hbcu #howarduniversity #blacklivesmatter #blackhistory #blackresilience #blackwomen #scienceforthecurious #scientifichistory #blackknowledge #phd #md #blackgraduates #sicklecellwarrior (at Howard University) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQFuMjNrsDA/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy Re:Birthday to me...It’s been a long reflective day for me. A long day of #appreciation and #gratitude for what my life is filled with. . 11 years ago was my very own #nde. My now wife and then girlfriend, was with me the night of. She wrote me everyday for while until I awoke from the coma. When I did wake, guess who was the first person I saw? (I called her “Olivia” as in Raven Symone...I still don’t know why) . I have these notes still and I haven’t read them yet. I’ve only read the front page and I just never felt quite ready to read them all.
