#read de Sade

I've been using my down time at work to do a lot of reading lately, and a big part of that has been making my way through the works that VnC references, just for the fun of it.
I was going to start The Song of Roland a few days ago, but when I first looked at it, I just did not have the patience to deal with the sheer ~righteousness~ and pomp of a story about a bunch of eleventh century catholic knights.
HOWEVER, after making my way through a solid 80 pages of de Sade, I have to admit, those righteous catholic knights ended up looking pretty god damn appealing.
#had to switch from de sade to Roland solely for the sake of a fucking palette cleanser. bc. JEEZ#protip for anyone who thinks it's a good idea to read a de Sade novel between customers at their place of business:#don't!#or at the very least don't read fucking 120 days lmao#it's like.#I knew going in I was gonna have to bail out of reading it at work at some point once shit went full de Sade#but I figured (falsely) I could get through the introduction before that point#I also knew about and was braced for there being a lot of horrific assault#But I still wasn't expecting it to *start* with such an immediately insane level of brutality#and even more than that. I was not prepared for the sheer amount of literal FILTH and uncleanliness#anyway. if you ever want to read an 18th century frenchman describe several different people's permanently gaping unwashed asses#and the mass abduction and assault of dozens and dozens of teens and children#all within the first 60 pages of a novel#read de Sade#in other news the song of roland is pretty entertaining#about andie

at the risk of sounding extremely stupid, Marquis de Sade isn't just a background character from vnc but a real person?? wrote philosophy books and porn??? the word sadism is partially derived from his name???? how do I not know this! that's Dominique's dad? ough I have so many questions
#i was just innocently reading an old ish hungarian novel as homework and i am punched in the face with this#other famous people i was only vaguely familiar with are mentioned in this novel. like diderot. some philosopher or whatever#heard the name before but i dont know know him yk#and then this and im like yeah yeah another familiar name. where have i heard it.#... VANITAS???#anyway you learn something new every day ig#vanitas no carte#les memoires de vanitas#the case study of vanitas#dominique de sade#now that i think about it it makes a lot of sense considering domis and veroniques personalities. even louis. damn.

Quote
Sade’s eroticism, with its tragic style, its displays, its cortèges, its sacrifices, its masks and costumes, preserves something of the demonology of primitive man. (...) The annihilation of the self and the resurrection of the body, to die in pain and to painfully return from death, is the sacred drama of the Sadeian orgasm. In this drama, flesh is used instrumentally, to provoke these spasmodic visitations of dreadful pleasure. In this flesh, nothing human remains; it aspires to the condition of the sacramental meal. It is never the instrument of love.
Angela Carter. The Sadeian Woman: An Exercise in Cultural History

Yeah you would be doing research about humiliation kinks 🙄
Lmaooo I was researching GNOMES, I very specifically did not make the jump to humiliation kinks from there, I am leaving it to the audience to make the jump themselves! Hush you

Why hate on characters or have ship battles when we can just ship all four of them? Behold my case study of vanitas ship chart that will satisfy all viewers:
Noe and vanitas are in love, vanitas and Jeanne as in love, Jeanne and Dominique are in love, and Dominique and Noe are in love.
Dominique and vanitas are like don't really care about each other at all and kinda have a mutual dislike.
And Noe and Jeanne are kinda buddies (not that close tho just like maybe respect) with a bit of jealousy on noes behalf cause remember Noe was like "I'm vexxed cause jeanne got to drink vanities's blood first"
An easy way to remember this is just, the black haired people are in love with the white haired people and the white haired people are in love with the black haired people
And now all parties are satisfied and there is no need to hate on characters or ships in the name of shipping!
#behold the power of multishipping#why ship one when you can ship all#BTW I HAVENT READ THE MANGA YET I JUST NEED TO FINISH SEASON TWO BEFORE STARTING IT#idk whst chsracters relationships are like in current canon for manga so this could be very inaccurate#the case study of vanitas#vanitas no carte#noe archiviste#vnc vanitas#dominique de sade#jeanne vnc#vaninoe#dominoe#jeanne x vanitas#Dominique x jeanne#ship#shipping#otp#romance#vampire#anime

i read the marquis de sade reader selected+transl. by margaret crosland. repulsive and boring. i think i got more out of the biographical stuff, de sade's pleading letters to his wife requesting she send him biscuits in prison etc. read in preparation for tackling carter's sadeian woman at some point

Honestly, I was sad Veronica was having sex with a man after saying she hated all men. Like a typical bad characterized "one exception" which meant she was being used or something (yes I'm aware of how fierce Vero is but those situations usually are used to "humble" the women in them) so to confirm that nah, she was getting down with a woman or is plotting and sharing blood (same as getting down in this manga honestly) with one?
Fiuu, what a relief! I should trust MochiJun more, clearly! Also this manga is getting queerer by each chapter which is fun XD crossing finger for Domijeanne and Vannoé
#the case study of vanitas#vnc meta#meta#vanitas no carte#veronica de sade#marquis machina#or#lady archiviste#the moment we have a canon name for her ill come back to the tags XD#a thousand years later I finally read the new chapter#I know I was blindsided by link click and then I jumped to finish the jjk season 2#but I swear vanitas has hee but good in it's grip#my thoughts

Wait hang on before I follow are you pr*ship or are you a good person
I mean I personally don’t think those two things are mutually exclusive but like idk dude I’m just blogging here
#generally speaking tho I do tend to believe that the stuff that people can enjoy in a fictional space doesn’t necessarily equate to things#they would enjoy in real life and I don’t pass any kind of blanket moral judgement on those who like or don’t like certain things in#particular if that’s what you’re asking. nor do I dogpile with any sort of moral judgement on fictional ideation like some kind of bible#belt mom who is crying because her kid fucking hates her because she won’t let her read carrie or something#no that ain’t me. I’ve even whacked off reading works by the marquis de sade#so like idk nonnie you be the judge it’s really up to you. I like to think I’m decent tho like I’ve never harassed anyone before which is#a huge win for this website

Not to start discourse but I really love how when I was a teenager I read about Robespierre and I thought that was interesting so then I read about Danton and Camille Desmoulins and Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI and Louis XVII and Louis XVIII and then I wanted more so I taught myself French and about the Marquis de Sade and Napoleon and and and
And also all these books about the culture and the history and the art and the individual people who we don’t have enough data for a biography but who still mattered and felt so strongly and did so much
Idk. It’s just fun, to me, to reach a point where any time I see a historical figure in the 18-19th century I can be like “I know that guy!!”
#napoleon#Robespierre#Marquis de Sade#Marie Antoinette#for the record? I am the farthest thing from an expert#so not @ me#I’m just saying it really is fun to like. read biographies on Sade and then you read a bio on napoleon and you see why Sade was locked up#and also you read a bio of Robespierre and he warns about the likes of Napoleon and napoleon rolls in like he’s fulfilling a prophecy#it’s neat. okay! it’s neat! my whole point is it’s neat!!!
