I've been using my down time at work to do a lot of reading lately, and a big part of that has been making my way through the works that VnC references, just for the fun of it.
I was going to start The Song of Roland a few days ago, but when I first looked at it, I just did not have the patience to deal with the sheer ~righteousness~ and pomp of a story about a bunch of eleventh century catholic knights.
HOWEVER, after making my way through a solid 80 pages of de Sade, I have to admit, those righteous catholic knights ended up looking pretty god damn appealing.

at the risk of sounding extremely stupid, Marquis de Sade isn't just a background character from vnc but a real person?? wrote philosophy books and porn??? the word sadism is partially derived from his name???? how do I not know this! that's Dominique's dad? ough I have so many questions

Quote
Sade’s eroticism, with its tragic style, its displays, its cortèges, its sacrifices, its masks and costumes, preserves something of the demonology of primitive man. (...) The annihilation of the self and the resurrection of the body, to die in pain and to painfully return from death, is the sacred drama of the Sadeian orgasm. In this drama, flesh is used instrumentally, to provoke these spasmodic visitations of dreadful pleasure. In this flesh, nothing human remains; it aspires to the condition of the sacramental meal. It is never the instrument of love.

Yeah you would be doing research about humiliation kinks 🙄
Lmaooo I was researching GNOMES, I very specifically did not make the jump to humiliation kinks from there, I am leaving it to the audience to make the jump themselves! Hush you

Why hate on characters or have ship battles when we can just ship all four of them? Behold my case study of vanitas ship chart that will satisfy all viewers:
Tumblr media
Noe and vanitas are in love, vanitas and Jeanne as in love, Jeanne and Dominique are in love, and Dominique and Noe are in love.
Dominique and vanitas are like don't really care about each other at all and kinda have a mutual dislike.
And Noe and Jeanne are kinda buddies (not that close tho just like maybe respect) with a bit of jealousy on noes behalf cause remember Noe was like "I'm vexxed cause jeanne got to drink vanities's blood first"
An easy way to remember this is just, the black haired people are in love with the white haired people and the white haired people are in love with the black haired people
And now all parties are satisfied and there is no need to hate on characters or ships in the name of shipping!

i read the marquis de sade reader selected+transl. by margaret crosland. repulsive and boring. i think i got more out of the biographical stuff, de sade's pleading letters to his wife requesting she send him biscuits in prison etc. read in preparation for tackling carter's sadeian woman at some point

Honestly, I was sad Veronica was having sex with a man after saying she hated all men. Like a typical bad characterized "one exception" which meant she was being used or something (yes I'm aware of how fierce Vero is but those situations usually are used to "humble" the women in them) so to confirm that nah, she was getting down with a woman or is plotting and sharing blood (same as getting down in this manga honestly) with one?
Fiuu, what a relief! I should trust MochiJun more, clearly! Also this manga is getting queerer by each chapter which is fun XD crossing finger for Domijeanne and Vannoé

It’s the little serendipities that makes reading through The 120 Days of Sodom worth it.

Not to start discourse but I really love how when I was a teenager I read about Robespierre and I thought that was interesting so then I read about Danton and Camille Desmoulins and Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI and Louis XVII and Louis XVIII and then I wanted more so I taught myself French and about the Marquis de Sade and Napoleon and and and
And also all these books about the culture and the history and the art and the individual people who we don’t have enough data for a biography but who still mattered and felt so strongly and did so much
Idk. It’s just fun, to me, to reach a point where any time I see a historical figure in the 18-19th century I can be like “I know that guy!!”
