Fanfic is supposed to be fun first and foremost.

The amount of disrespect I have seen lately regarding creators is both shocking and disgusting, especially when coming from other creators, and I honestly can't stay quiet about it any longer.

Maybe I'm looking at a lot of this very closely considering I've recently taken an indefinite break from one part of creating I once really enjoyed due to such disregard for my time and effort (rip gif making), but to see such careless comments and treatment for fic authors too??? BY OTHER FIC AUTHORS???

Isn't the world already cruel enough? We should be inviting in positivity and appreciation for the works of others. To celebrate the victories and accomplishments around something that is already nerve wrecking enough as it is. We should not be cultivating a circle where tearing authors apart is acceptable, regardless of if you liked a story or not.

Would you want it done to your works???

Fandom spaces should be fun. Fanfic is a free thing, typically done in what little free time we writers have, and shared with other people for the sake of having FUN. We are not professionals. This is not our full time job. We are not paid for it. Yet to treat fanfic like a professional literary circle is just...wrong. Criticism (constructive only, and when asked for it) is fine, and if you want to shit talk in your DMs to someone else, go for it, but to outright tear someone apart for their FREE fanfic that they wrote to HAVE FUN and ENJOY the fandom with other people in a public space for all eyes (including the author themselves) to see?

Gross.

We are all from different walks of life, and have different experiences that impact why we may or may not go about fic a certain way. Some of us don't speak English as our first language, and some don't go about having a beta reader, or are on a time crunch for an event, etc. You don't know someone's life, and have zero right to talk down another creator because they don't meet your small narrow-minded criteria of what is “good”. What's “bad” and “tear apart” worthy to you, may be a gem of a story to someone else.

There is no room for “if you hated xyz's work, come talk about it with us!”, and if this is something you feel is welcome in any community, fandom, social setting....DO BETTER.

 And do not interact with me.

Don’t like the content??? Did you know that there is a feature where you can unfollow people?? Or you can block tags? Or block accounts! Use them. Create your own online experience, and maybe let’s NOT bully people because of the things they are creating that brings them joy??? Being nice, what a wild concept that is these days.

Did anyone with that dumb Apprentice movie think the reason that Variety/Penske Media (which is a terrible monopoly that should've never been created and features for the most part some of the most obnoxious clickbait articles SEO has ever known but that's another rant) didn't invite their star on their Actors on Actors things is because we get enough fucking politics on TV and the radio lately, so maybe all of us excited for panels about The Substance, The Outrun and other worthy films didn't want to have them dragged down by something that looks like a miserable 90s TV movie with a man whose life is already so exhaustively cataloged and whose only awards chances seem to the be the Razzies? And with a generic performance by an unexceptional actor? Nobody's being 'silenced'. You made a crappy movie about a crappy man set in the worst period of time New York ever knew who did crappy things that didn't improve New York at all. I'm sorry it didn't get picked up by an actual studio, but like they say in gaming...'get good'. Excuse me if I'd like to have an actor talking to an actor and they're both excited for their films rather than having to drone on about a biopic about a man many would just like to die quietly, but we're stuck with for four more years. And somehow the staff of Variety saw that too.

The stupid Penske-dominated awards campaign scene is already terrible enough without having to deal with a dog of a film most people have no want to see.

AAAAAA THIS GIVES ME MIR vibes!!! Raf's cover of Smoke and Mirrors screams a lot about MiR (or Crimson, as I lovingly call him BAHAHAHAHA) and sometimes I just. I just sit here and go "holy shit this.. this fucker resonates with it so hard."

Although, I don't think he enjoys me telling him about it. He keeps saying it doesn't fit him when sir, it DOES. He's in denial and I always remind him he is drowning in said river in Egypt.

Imagine reposting someone’s fanfic, and acting so insanely gross when the author KINDLY asks you to take it down, or at least credit them. (I can’t reblog the og post because I was blocked ages ago by the op)

Imagine then having a toddler tantrum because the author, who was rudely rejected and insulted, shared the post and advised people they were the author as seen in the first set of images.

Imagine being such a GROSS bully because YOU were wrong.

The whole reason for the Scorcese rant last night is I saw some out of context quote from James Gunn on the guy and people were shitting on him for it. You know, despite the fact that Gunn is one of only a handful of modern comic book movie directors who attempts to give his films a unique style and do something different.

I even saw someone bring up his two Razzies, because as we all know the institution that nominated The Shining and The Thing is a good indicator of quality

365 Day Movie Challenge (2018) - #160: The Devil’s Advocate (1997) - dir. Taylor Hackford

(Warning: spoilers ahead.)

The act of watching The Devil’s Advocate was always going to be an interesting one for me since I well recall that my brother saw this particular film on a cross-country flight back in 1997/98, when he was 11 or 12 years old, and it was a disturbingly grown-up experience. That being said, as intense as this drama would be for any child, as a 26-year-old woman I can only remark on what a ridiculously bad movie it is, despite its surprising lack of Razzie nominations (my favorite cinematic barometer for low quality).

Keanu Reeves delivers a pretty decent performance as Kevin Lomax, a tough-as-nails prosecutor from small-town Florida who is recruited by a glamorous, New York City-based firm that he knows nothing about. Kevin and his young wife, Mary Ann (Charlize Theron) are easily swayed by the absurdly high salary being offered, the gorgeous apartment given to them by Kevin’s new company and, most of all, Kevin falls under the spell of his handsome and confidant new boss, John Milton (Al Pacino). (That’s some symbolism, huh?) Over time, Kevin and Mary Ann both begin to see terrifying images in their everyday lives; individually they deal with unsettling visions both when awake and when asleep. Mary Ann’s scenes, which often take place in the apartment, suggest that The Devil’s Advocate could have been a compelling thriller about hellish NYC apartment buildings in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby, Single White Female and Sliver - certainly Charlize Theron’s performance is the one that most got under my skin - but no, instead it’s a dumb movie about Kevin Lomax realizing that his employer is the Devil and how annoying that is.

Kevin, John Milton and the rest of the Satanic lawyers are part of Milton’s conspiracy to overtake the world, a goal he hopes can be achieved if he can convince Kevin, who is - spoiler alert! - his son, to bed his half-sister, Christabella Andreoli (Connie Nielsen with a regrettable perm), thus allowing for the birth of the Antichrist. Totally radical.

The supporting cast also features Jeffrey Jones (ugh), Judith Ivey, Craig T. Nelson, Tamara Tunie (love her), Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Debra Monk, Chris Bauer and a young Heather Matarazzo, who holds her own in the film’s first scene as a sexual assault victim whose testimony is mercilessly torn apart by Kevin Lomax. The acting is solid and I suppose there’s some meaningful insight into the human condition that can be gained from John Milton/Al Pacino toward the end of the film, given that the character goes on a few extended philosophical rants, but the plot is unbearably silly even for a fantasy/horror flick, and I’ve learned that I definitely have a threshold for how seriously I can take a movie that incorporates CGI flames.
