INKTOBER 18 - Carian Knight, Elden Ring
Moongrum Knight Carian or as I call him "The Lord of the Parry", this NPC gave me more of a fight than Rennala.
I like his armor set but I don't like facing him.

"Who cares about the Elden Throne ... I want the Academy."
(I'm more and more convinced that this is Izar's main goal by now. She wants to run this place, indulge in astrological research, restore knowledge and make it accessible. Not only Carian astrology but ... everything. She wants to bring in teachers from all over the Lands Between, and beyond, if she can. What do the Nomad merchants have to say about the stars, for example? She has a thousand ideas about re-opening the Academy. Invite Albinauric students. Send word to the Nox that they're welcome to study the real night sky up here. Open up the curriculum so all kinds of magic get taught, not only the glintstone stuff. And of course, spend entire days in that glorious library. I have no idea what she'll do about the Elden Throne should she get that far eventually; what she truly wants is Raya Lucaria.)

Visit Raya Lucaria!
I love this view - one of the most beautiful in the whole game in my opinion.
You can grab prints of this (and all the other Elden Ring travel posters!) here: https://www.inprnt.com/collections/aylameridian/elden-ring-travel-posters/

Speculation: The Founder of the Lazuli Conspectus
Tumblr media
While not an important figure as Azur and Lusat, I had wondered what became of the other Conspectus Founders. Lazuli, Twinsage, Haima, and Heirodas get no named founders. Today I'm mostly looking at Lazuli as I made a small connection.
In the pic above shows the founder holding a Carian Knight Sword, albeit shrunk down to dagger size. Now obviously the Lazuli Conspectus use carian sorceries and view the moon equal to the stars. But it never really clicked for me that the founder himself was a Carian Knight.
My next thought process was, "Well which Carian Knight is he?" Afterall there's stated to be 'less than 20' and most of them are Trolls so we can narrow it down easily
Tumblr media
First is this grave in the Academy's graveyard, it has the full Carian Knight set. If the founder had died surely the Academy would give him a proper grave even if they betrayed the Carians, the Lazuli Conspectus is still around despite being 'heresy' so they have SOME decency.
Tumblr media
Second is the spirit in Caria Manor, who follows Ranni. Besides being a Carian Knight as a connection, the shield all Lazuli Sorcerer's has the crest of Ranni so it's possible the founder followed Ranni specifically. Might be a stretch.
Tumblr media
Third is Moongrum, kind of boring but hey he's a living Carian Knight and is protected by the bowling ball trap. The Academy doesn't seem too interested in killing off Renalla so maybe they let him do his thing since he's a conspectus founder?
One other thing before I leave
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Haima Crown uses a shrunken down version of the Lazuli Crown. Interestingly the Haima Gavel spell is the only non-carian spell that's in the shape of a weapon, and the two Haima spells are guarded by a living Carian Troll Knight. Interesting 🤔

Church of Irith
It took me a moment to get my bearings, make sure i was fully back on this plane of reality. i took a few looks off the side of the tower to see what I could see. Most of it wasn't worth writing about. Unusual, to be fair, but I categorized it as "I'll get to it when I get to it."
Now, when I looked out to the northeast... that was something worth looking at.
Tumblr media
another tower, north of Caelid, all on its own. Interesting enough, but behind it...was that a waterfall? A waterfall in the ocean? I remembered that a few times I had seen something weird in the central sea, but to see it confirmed like this... I'll have to get a closer look when I visit Caelid again, something I'm not in any hurry to do.
Tumblr media
I returned Liurnia of the Lakes and headed towards the nearest landmark: A church called the "Church of Irith."
Hm. That name. It brought to mind another life. A cold valley bathed in moonlight. A corrupt pontiff. A princess in a tower. The sun realm up above.
The connections were vague here, except that this was a land of the moon, at the foot of the land of the sun.
Tumblr media
After picking up the sacred tear, I noticed a man sitting on a bench near the statue. He was one of those guys who just radiates sadness. Not just because he's sad, which he certainly is, but because he makes you sad just looking at him. Like this is someone who has never caught a break in his entire life.
He introduced himself as Thops and said that he'd give me information for a small donation of runes. I was expecting him to be underplaying it, but no. He wanted ten runes. Ten?! That'll hardly get you a meal. I think sheep have more runes than that. Just how hard-up is this guy?
He offered to sell me spells too. Nothing too impressive, but I bought one just out of pity. After that, he told me that i needed a glintstone key to get into the academy, and that he...left his inside. Jeez.
I had to leave him alone before I started spiraling into depression. The man just had a cloud over him. I headed somewhere a little more cheery, like the graveyard.
Tumblr media
The skeletons here were a bit more dangerous than elsewhere. Some of them were death sorcerers who summoned skulls with their scythes, while others were hulks with axes that must have been executioners in life. The latter took three pots of holy water to fell, so I might need to think of a new strategy.
Tumblr media
I found an Academy Scroll resting on one of the graves. I couldn't decipher it so I took it to Sellen. She informed me that this was typically the place where a "bluntstone" stopped learning. Thops had used the same word to describe himself. I wonder if this was his scroll? Perhaps he left the Academy to visit a friend's grave? That sounds right. It makes him sadder.
Well, not a lot to do here, but it was a good start to my journey through my homeland.
Why did they lock down the academy?

The thing about Elden Ring is that it takes place in a world hundreds of years after the apocalypse- but where, due to the distorted nature of Death, everyone is old enough to remember what things were like before society collapsed. The damage is both ancient and fresh for them.
Everywhere you go, stone buildings are reduced to not much more than their foundations -such is the amount of time that has passed since society was stable enough to build.
And the people are just as decrepit. You can't necessarily see the damage in all the characters in the same way you can with the environment, but they are just as old and neglected. It's easy to forget that a very real source of conflict in this story stems simply from the overlong passage of time that every character has been forced to live through.

Lordober 2024 Academy
My socials "I am so tired... of these damn sorceries!" Raya Lucaria was not fun to deal with all the stupid burger king wearing nerds. Like I wished I could just... smash their faces in with their own helmets. Art (c) ME!

"So ... Raya Lucaria ... Their library is outstanding! They have a whole section on Carian astrology, and there is a book on Albinauric cosmology that includes a list of all the constellations they believe in! And an entire shelf for celestial maps of excellent quality, and I found one with a section of the sky as seen north of the Altus Plateau, although of course I'll eventually have to go there and check whether it's actually accurate ... Oh, and they also have the most amazing telescope I've ever seen, and it only needed a little bit of calibrating to work just fine! And the astrolabes! And the observatory! ... Ah yes, and we also fought Rennala."

Finally, finally Raya Lucaria. Honestly not my favourite legacy dungeon to play, but visually I think it is wonderful. The atmosphere really is palpable.

Today I finally noticed the Carian Inverted Statue has a sibling piece found on the altar inside the Church of the Cuckoo in Raya Lucaria. The two aren't the exact same but they are close. Reference pics for any who want them.
