Movies watched in 2024
Dìdi (2024, USA)
Director & Writer: Sean Wang
Mini-review:
This is one of those special films that feels achingly true to life, with a realistic, incisive portrayal of the awkwardness and cringiness that comes with being a 13-year-old boy. Sean Wang's vision is deeply personal, but at the same time it manages to be a surprisingly universal experience. It certainly helps that the production design is so detailed, perfectly capturing the essence of the late 2000s. Izaac Wang does a great job with a pretty difficult role, which allows you to empathize with his character despite his behavior. And Joan Chen's performance is beautiful and nuanced too, basically the beating heart of the movie. Anyway, Dìdi certainly lives up to that "For anyone who's ever been a teenager" tagline.

A lot of TV stations have forgotten what "quality" means. But not Channel 62. They NEVER knew what it meant. "Weird Al" Yankovic is George Newman, a daydreamer who becomes the manager of a small TV station that's losing money as quickly as it's losing viewers. Before long he's programming shows like "Stanley Spadowski's Clubhouse," "Wheel Of Fish" and "Raul's Wild Kingdom." But can Channel 62's new popularity save it from sinister forces? To find out… don't touch that dial!
Pre-roder UHF.

Sean Wang’s Dìdi (弟弟) is a heartfelt, genuinely hilarious coming-of-age story that centers around the ever-changing pangs of trying to fit in. Full of deeply nostalgic beats and incredible performances from the whole cast, the film is worth seeing on a big screen.
Starring Izaac Wang, Joan Chen, Shirley Chen, Zhang Li Hua, Mahaela Park, Raul Dial, Aaron Chang, and more, Dìdi (弟弟) paints a heartbreaking snapshot of what happens when we’re desperately trying to fit in without adequately understanding what that entails. No matter how often our parents tried to tell us (and this is so vastly different for those of us whose parents immigrated to the US), we don’t realize how right they are until long after we’ve graduated and moved forward. Being a kid is hard. Being a kid struggling to fit in is even more challenging, and our curiosities only take us so far. With all this in mind, the film is a transparent examination of those perils through a uniquely gorgeous lens.

Chapter 4 - The Worst Conclusion
Hmm. Interesting chapter title.
I'm sure there's nothing to worry about.
Tumblr media
We approach Axis, as the head honcho himself comes out to defend it. Just as Hathaway said last chapter, things quickly devolve to everyone yelling over each other.
Amuro's telling Char he can't die until Char's dead too, Chan's stressing over Amuro saying ominous shit like that, Quess is yelling about how she won't let anyone near Char, Gyunei's telling Quess to dial it back, Hathaway's trying to figure out if that was Quess in the humongous Mobile Armor... It's enough undistilled Tomino to make you cry tears of joy.
Tumblr media
With everyone (except Raul and Kayra, because they're chill like that) having said their piece, it's gameplay time, baby! And with our enemies so far away and our units so close together, you already know what's coming.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All aboard the Ra Cailum train! Two casts of Accel later and we're right on their doorstep.
Tumblr media
We try to kick things off by poking at Rezin with the Ra Cailum's anti-air batteries, but a trigger of Shield Defense means that we don't even breach 500 damage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kayra, Hathaway and Chan all take their turns at weakening grunts. Of note is Hathaway managing to trigger Shoot Down... when i had animations off >:(
Tumblr media
But the real main course here is Raul's newfound range. Look at that beautiful radius. Might as well celebrate by feeding him that one grunt Kayra softened up!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...Or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's hardly a great feat for Amuro, but he has an easier time poking at Rezin than Bright did. Onwards to the signature uneventful enemy phase!
Tumblr media
As usual, not much other than more HP shaving off of some of these grunts. Amuro does shoot down the Geara Doga that Kayra and Raul left in the red. Biggest thing of note is i inadvertently left Kayra within range of Gyunei and Quess' beam cannons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...not that that's much of an issue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rezin decides to poke back at Bright, dealing some respectable damage, and Cuts Down his missile salvo on the counter. She's not going down without a fight, it seems! With that, it's back to our turn, and i immediately spot a golden opportunity.
Tumblr media
With no Valor or Strike, this won't make us rich like some later MAP Attacks will... but I still can't just let this pass me by. "To not eat the meal set before him is a man's shame", or something like that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rezin's Shield triggering and the Jagd Doga dodging are a bit of a damper, but we got some solid HP shaving off on the northern most Geara, and shot down one. I'm happy with this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, i have Hathaway take down this Doga so i can move Chan down next to Amuro, thus leaving no units of ours within Gyunei and Quess' attack range, forcing them to move closer, and letting us keep our vantage point.

'My Belongings Are Missing From My Bags, Stolen?'
© Raul Cortes Junior 10 - 27 - 2024
OFFICIAL REPORT TO 30TH STREET SHELTER (NYC):
As I looked & searched into my bag for things that I haven't seen in a day or so,
I began to realize that it went completely missing, & that I left my belongings in the locker, in my shelter-assigned room briefly around 4pm. Now, the type of locker that I have is a combination locker, & it wasn't accompanied by a key to unlock it in case the combination was lost or forgotten.
The combination locks, especially small ones that "Master Lock" makes, I assume are not too difficult to decipher or break into, because the dial can subtly signal when a combination number has been reached, as the dial is being turned around to unlock it.
Here is a video example of what I am speaking about:
youtube
(I don't remember if there was a keyhole in the back of my lock, like some small "Master Lock" brands have which also makes it easier to break into).
There has been two Hispanic guys who have been my roommates, (Puerto Rican maybe? I am not sure), the first one slept one night 10 - 25 - 2024, the other slept last night 10 - 26 - 2024. I am not saying that either of them broke into my locker, I am saying that they were assigned the bed next to mine, on back to back nights on the 3rd floor: 3 - 078.
I understand that surveillance in the shelter is top notch, & if something needed to be investigated, I believe in can be looked into effectively. I hope I am not troubling you too much, my ink pens, plastic bags & some other things were possibly stolen after placing them in the locker, while I was away from the shelter temporarily.

Focus Features releases First Trailer for Coming of Age Film 'DiDi'
In his feature directorial debut, Sean Wang has created a new kind of coming-of-age film, one that is as much a tender ode to immigrant mothers as it is to the dizzying, dissonant experience of adolescence. (L to R) Aaron Chang as Jimmy “Soup” Kim as “”, Izaac Wang as “Chris Wang”, Tarnvir Singh as “Hardeep”, and Raul Dial as “Fahad Mahmood” in writer/director Sean Wang’s DÌDI, a Focus Features…

“Darling, I’m home!” Steven’s cheerful voice replaced the silence of your shared flat as he finally came back home from work. The new museum he worked at was wonderful and his first week of being a tour guide had just come to an end. Steven was over the moon and knowing he was coming home to you only made him feel even better, as if he was literally walking on sunshine.
For once in his life, all seemed to be going so well. Steven felt invincible in a way. Little did he know of the drastic turn that would take place much sooner than anticipated.
When all he was met with was silence, Steven began to worry. Since you had told them you’d be home before them, it was odd that you weren’t there.  Refusing to jump to conclusions, Steven pulled out his phone from his pocket and searched for you name in his contacts, calling you as he made his way further inside the apartment to inspect everything. The only sound he heard was the beeping dial tone.
You’d pick up and have an explanation. Everything was fine.
Steven turned the lights on and looked around the place. Your phone or wallet weren’t anywhere to be seen and the note he had left for you on the kitchen counter had been completely untouched. That was definitely odd. Usually you left a note for him too, especially if you were going somewhere. The bright, little notes were some of Steven’s favourite things.
“She’s not answering,” Steven said out loud, staring at the phone screen that let him know you hadn’t picked up the call. Marc and Jake were aware of what was going on, both of their minds racing to different places. Neither of those places were good.
Call her again, Marc demanded, trying hard not to let his fear get the best of him. Then again, Marc knew you. He knew that you would let them know if you wouldn’t show up when agreed. Perhaps for an ordinary couple, this wasn’t a big deal but Marc had enemies. Jake had enemies. Steven had them too, now. It was one of their greatest fears that one day those enemies would find you.
As Steven walked around the flat frantically, his heart began to beat harder all the way in his throat, it felt like. The dial tone was taunting him, making seconds feel like minutes as it kept on ringing.
“Pick up, pick up...please,” Steven made his way to the window, looking down at the London street that was illuminated by the yellow street lights. Darkness had swallowed the blue sky and you were somewhere out there, not picking up the phone. This was so unlike you and it gnawed at Steven’s heart. He didn’t even wish to imagine you in any sort of danger.
Shouldn’t have let her walk home at this hour alone! Jake had jumped to the worst conclusions. Steven looked at the man whose reflection showed up in the nearby mirror. Jake looked like he was about to explode from worry and anger, barely containing such intense feelings.
“Don’t say that!” Steven couldn’t bear it. There was no way he would let them assume the worst so soon. “Maybe she’s staying late. Let’s meet her half way, yeah? Come on, out we go!”
Steven was glad he hadn’t taken off his shoes yet as he rushed back outside, making sure he had his keys after the fact he had closed the front door and he was already in the elevator. The mirrors in the small space made it easy to see all the alters, yet somehow it wasn’t very comforting. Not when all of them were so clearly concerned over your safety. It was almost as if they just knew you weren’t staying late. This was much worse than that. There was a sick feeling in Steven’s gut as he stood there, waiting for the elevator to reach the ground floor.
The feeling was growing worse by the second, spreading like fire and tugging at his guts until he felt nauseous. What if Jake was right? What if you were hurt? Lying in a ditch somewhere, cold and beaten, all alone.
The notification sound of his phone snapped Steven out of his thoughts. He ripped the phone out of his pocket and felt a wave of relief crashing against him when he saw your name on the screen.
“Oh thank heavens,” Steven almost felt like laughing as he thought about how worried he felt. Overreacting never did any good for anyone. There he was now, unlocking his phone and waiting to see your message. In all honesty, Steven expected something short and simple, just letting him know you’d be able to call him soon. When he saw a video file with a pitch black background and no other message, the relief was stolen from him just as quickly as it had arrived.
Steven knew he had to open it but every cell in his body told him not to click it. He froze, brown eyes glued at the screen in terror as he anticipated what would happen next.
It was Marc who fronted next, taking control of the body as Steven took too long to think about his next actions. Marc pressed the play button and then took a deep breath, but nothing could’ve possibly prepared him for what they were all about to see.
The video began and immediately chains were more easily visible, leading up to you. There you were, chained to what looked like a bed in a dark room. The volume was on full but no sounds were heard. Whoever had filmed the video zoomed in on your face, eyelashes resting against your bloodied cheeks. To believe you were just asleep would've been foolish. Someone must've knocked you out one way or another, a realization that made Marc sick to his stomach. Blood was boiling in his body, so much so he could hear it in his ears and feel how his skin was set on fire with rage. Whoever did that to you would pay for it with their life. That was certain.
Suddenly, the person who was filming it flipped the camera and revealed his face. The man was smiling cruelly since he knew exactly who was watching the clip and how he was reacting. Marc recognized that evil gleam from anywhere since he knew this man extremely well. That was Raul Bushman. A mercenary, just like Marc used to be although these days Raul Bushman was better known as a fucking terrorist. Marc had hoped the past would stay in the past but evidently, it had not. Life wasn't ever that simple. Now Raul was there, in the present with you as his hostage. Knowing how wicked Raul was terrified Marc because he couldn't be sure he would find you in time.
Don't go there, you have to focus! Jake was already in action mode, planning on how they would track this man down and bring you back home safely. If they let panic overtake them then it could cost you your life. There was no way any of them could let that happen. Steven was dead silent for once, not finding a single thing to say at that moment. Fear had completely enveloped him, but not fear for his own sake. Steven was scared he'd never see you again and for what? Because a sick man wanted to hurt you? How was that fair?
"Marc Spector," Raul addressed Marc in the video, simultaneously letting Steven know that this was personal. Jake had recognized that tattooed face as well. Steven hadn't as Marc's memories of his mercenary past weren't something he could personally recall.
Marc was thinking about ripping Raul's face off as he anticipated what he was going to say next. Did he want money? That didn't seem likely. Whatever he wanted, Marc was willing to give it if he could get you back. The killing could happen afterwards.
"I've got your girl," Raul chuckled, enjoying this for some sick and twisted reason. "She's not very chatty anymore. You should've heard her earlier! Did you teach her to speak like that or did you find yourself a sailor? Very vulgar, Spector. So naughty."
Marc who is that? Steven's voice barely carried above a whisper as he stared at Marc from the reflection of the elevator mirror. The elevator had reached the first floor but they had no intentions of leaving just yet. Running around in circles with no leads would be a waste of time.
Marc ignored Steven and forced himself to keep watching the video, his grip on the phone so strong it was a miracle it hadn't snapped in half yet.  That's when Jake began to explain things to Steven in the background, their words turning into a haze as Marc stood there, in utter shock and disbelief at it all. He could only watch as Raul flipped the camera over to you once again and that's when the tears threatened to spill. How could he have let something like this happen to you? The love of his life, the sweetest and most wonderful person that had ever walked the earth. Marc felt so guilty. If you were to die now he would never forgive himself. Not in a million years and more.
"I'm sure you'd love to hear some conditions or whatever but the truth is," Raul sighed dramatically as he caressed your cheek, wiping away the blood, "I have none. The only reason I'm doing this is because of you. I'm curious to know what made you so soft and pathetic. What a waste of a man you are."
Just like that, the video ended. Raul's words echoed in Marc's head loudly, drumming into his skull and every beat made him feel worse. Marc could hear Steven and Jake yelling but none of their words made sense. The overwhelming worry and anger were over-spilling and Marc couldn't take it. He turned on his heel and punched the mirror as hard as he could, letting out a pained and frustrated shout and most likely alarming everyone else in the building but he couldn't have cared less. The smashed mirror showed Marc thousands of small reflections as glass fell on the floor. Crimson red was running down his knuckles angrily, most likely dripping on the floor. Marc didn't care. He only cared about finding you.
So did Jake who took control, needing to work on his plan immediately and not let Marc or Steven waste any more time. Jake pressed the elevator button back to their floor, leaving blood on the buttons. Whoever walked into the elevator next would have a surprise awaiting them. Raul Bushman, on the other hand, had something much worse awaiting him. If he thought for one second that he was more powerful than them, he was wrong and Jake was going to hunt him down no matter what it took. Touching you was the biggest mistake the poor excuse of a man had ever made.
The first thing you noticed as consciousness was coming back to you was the dreadful headache you had. It made you whine in pain as you tried to roll over, only to realize you were unable to move your arms. Horror spread throughout you as you remembered what had happened, eyes popping open as you took in the dark surroundings. The room was dim and quite small too, with only a bed and a dresser. It didn't have a window so it was impossible to tell whether it was day or night. As creepy as it was, it didn't smell bad. You had expected the thick copper scent of blood to linger in the air or of something foul and rotting. Perhaps the cleanliness meant you weren't in a creepy dungeon but instead in a preoccupied building? Was that a good thing or not? You didn't know.
Stay calm, you repeated that to yourself as you took a few deep breaths. Freaking out wouldn't do you any good but it wasn't easy to steady your breaths either. As the memories came back to you, you could feel yourself slipping onto a world of doubt and worry. The man who had found you was absolutely terrifying. Not only was he tall enough to tower over you with ease, but his teeth also looked sharp and metallic. The man had scars all over his body and a look in his brown eyes that had told you he wasn't merciful at all. Years of hardships decorated every inch of his skin but he didn't seem to let that drag him down. He used it as armour, which made him evermore dangerous.
Just as you had feared, the door opened, allowing artificial light to pour inside for only a moment as he walked in. The door shut loudly and with a click, which meant it was locked. The tall man turned on the ceiling light, the single bulb hanging from the ceiling allowing you to see better, only to realize his cold eyes were glued to you. When he made his way further inside the small room, you could hardly hear his footsteps as your heart was thudding so loudly against your rib cage. How were you supposed to remain calm when a scary man had you chained down like an animal? What was he going to do? What did he want from you?
"You're awake sooner than expected," He finally spoke, his deep voice sending shivers down your spine. “Thought you’d be weaker.”
"What do you want from me?"
The man didn't reply instantly but judging by the stern look on his face, he had clearly heard you. For whatever reason he actually took his sweet time thinking about his reply as he circled the bed, never tearing his eyes off of you. As he reached the wooden dresser, he dragged a gun out of a holster and placed it on the surface with a loud thud, making sure it was pointed directly at you so even when the gun was untouched and simply resting on the dresser, it kept you on edge.
"What do I want from you? That's a silly question," He finally spoke, much more relaxed now that you were chained down and silent. "Nothing really. You're here because of Marc Spector," your lover's name was spoken as if it was poison on his tongue, every syllable tasting rancid.
"Why?" You decided it was better to talk to this man instead of being tortured. The more time you wasted like this, the better were your chances of survival. Surely, they were coming for you. The moment you thought about them, you felt a pang of guilt in your gut. Marc was probably freaking out by now. Steven must've been so scared. Jake? Oh Jake, he wouldn’t show it but you knew the protective man was ridden with anxiety. You didn't even want to imagine how stressed they must've been. Did they know you were there? Or did they think you had abandoned them?
The tall man pulled an old wooden chair next to the bed and sat down, being so close to you now that it made you worry. What was he going to do?
"Long ago, Marc and I used to be pals, if you will. He was a great mercenary. Unstoppable, quick, someone that a man like me could respect. Then something changed and he turned on us. Marc became soft, that rat," He spat angrily, slamming his large fist against the wall so hard you flinched, half expecting him to hit you instead. Your heart leapt to your throat and your eyes squeezed shut which you instantly regretted.
"Are you scared, love?" He mocked you, leaning closer to you so his foul breath landed on your skin, causing your hairs to stand on end. Stay calm.
“Anyway, I wanted to know what changed him and all leads came back to you. Funny how the same thing that made him soft is the same thing that makes him hard,” he laughed at his own wordplay, his belittling words making you feel dirty. What he was talking about was none of his business and you wanted to let him hear your thoughts, but decided to bite your tongue for now.
"W-What's your name?" You ignored him, focusing on your one and only task right now. Keep him talking. Nothing else mattered.
"You can call me Raul," He introduced himself while caressing your cheek. That's when you noticed it, his left hand only had three fingers. Raul caught you staring.
"Wanna know who did this to me?" Raul grabbed your jaw forcefully and made you face him. There was no warmth in his eyes, only deep and dark coldness that sent shivers down your spine. His touch was rough and it stung but you assumed it was better than whatever else it was he was capable of doing. Without knowing what else to do, you simply nodded, encouraging him to go on. By now, you felt your body betraying you as your limbs quivered underneath his touch. That's how easy it was for him to terrify you. At that moment, you wished you had abilities such as Khonshu had granted your lovers. You wished you could've broken free from these chains and returned home safely but alas, you couldn't. There you were, forced to look at this man and hear his stories, not knowing what was true and what wasn't.
"Marc did this," Raul revealed eventually, something about it making your gut twist in horror. Picturing Marc severing a man's fingers off was sickening. If it were true, you had to believe there was a good reason behind it. Khonshu only made him punish people who had already done evil things. This man was no exception.
"Tell me, sweetheart," Raul tilted his head slightly, "have you heard of the phrase 'an eye for an eye'?"
Who hadn't? You thought but kept that to yourself as you didn't wish to set him off. Somehow, it seemed like nothing was truly needed to set this man off as your silence alone was enough to push him into action.
Everything that happened next was surreal. You could only watch as Raul reached for something in his pocket, something that turned out to be a knife. It reflected the yellow ceiling light and you noticed just how sharp it was. There was a carved symbol on the blade which you didn't recognize but it didn't seem to matter when he grabbed your left hand that was still chained to the headboard.
"No! No, please! Please don't do this!" You screamed in shock when he pressed the sharp knife against the base of your index and middle fingers, not enough to cut your fingers off but your skin broke under the edge. "Please don't!" Panicked tears rolled down your face as you tried to wiggle free. It was of no use though and you both knew it.
"If you stop moving it'll be over sooner!" Raul yelled at you and then had the audacity to smile. The curve of his lips was sadistic, something straight out of nightmares. He enjoyed this.
Just as blood began to trickle down your palm, the hot liquid reminding you of how doomed you were, a phone rang in his pocket. That was your phone.
"Fucking hell!" Raul sighed, annoyed by the interruption but you were forever grateful because he stepped away and put the knife on the table next to the gun. So far, your digits were still intact but the ghastliness of what had almost happened shook you to the core, making you feel nauseous. The cut at the base of your fingers stung. Even without seeing it, you knew it'd leave a scar. A scar that would be much better than losing your fingers. As you were still recovering from the shock of what Raul nearly succeeded with, you didn't even realize what was happening.
Raul had answered the video call because Marc's face had shown up on the screen. He had anticipated a call again. As he picked up, he instantly turned the camera to you, letting Marc see what was happening.
"You have perfect timing, Spector. I was just about to cut her pretty little fingers off," Raul revealed casually as if he had no care in the world. He wanted to piss off Marc and it didn't seem like it frightened him at all. Either he was a fool or extremely powerful.
"Don't you fucking dare touch her!" Marc growled with wrath in his voice. You realized you had never heard him so angry ever before. His voice was alien, but at the same time, you found comfort in it. Was he going to find you? If so, would he be there in time? Would you see him again?
"If I do, what are you gonna do about it? There's not much you can do to stop me," Raul laughed again, grabbing the bloody knife and waving it around as he spoke. "I'm here, she's here and you're god-knows-where! Even if you do find us, you'll be too late! I will make you watch as I kill her, that I promise you!"
This couldn't be happening. This had to be a nightmare. If you had been able to, you would've pinched yourself. You felt so helpless as tears streamed down your face and you struggled against the cold chains that were wrapped so tightly around you that the skin beneath the metal was bruising at an alarming rate. Staying calm after hearing his morbid threats seemed like an impossible task.
If he was truly going to kill you, this could've been your last chance to speak to any of them. As much as the realization terrified you, you had to find the courage to speak again.
"I love you, baby, I'm so sorry," You sniffled, trying to see the screen but Raul didn't grant you the satisfaction of seeing Marc. "I'm sorry!" The apology poured from your lips quietly as the guilt was eating you alive. The violent sobs caused your lungs to feel like they were on fire and burning you up from within. Had you been more careful, this would've never happened. You were sure of it. If this twisted man took your life tonight, the happy future you had dreamt of would be ripped away from not only you but from them as well. It wasn't fair in any way.
"Don't interrupt me!" Raul shrieked all of a sudden, angered by your attitude. As he leapt toward you, phone in hand, Marc yelled something that got lost as you let out a startled scream. The next thing you knew, Raul hovered above you with the knife dangerously close to your neck. "Shut up! I don't want to hear this lovey-dovey shit, okay? Just be quiet!"
Beep beep beep
The call ended. Whether Raul accidentally ended it or Marc, it didn't matter. The line was lost and you feared that just like that, you would never hear from him ever again. Not another 'I love you' from Steven that he would tell you first thing in the morning. No more endearments from Jake in Spanish that always made your heart flutter with joy. No more vulnerable love confessions from Marc he would whisper to you when no one else was around.
For once, Khonshu was being useful. It was actually the Egyptian god who helped locate you. There wasn't anything that could happen at night that went by his sight. When even Jake was going bollocks over worry he felt for you, the god couldn't just let them run in circles and desperately try to find you. Raul Bushman was smart, unfortunately, and he made it near impossible to find him. Tracing the calls hadn’t worked and studying the background of the video revealed nothing.
Raul Bushman was well prepared, but Raul didn't have Khonshu. When the bird-headed god told Jake how to find you, he wasted no time getting a move on. After the video call where Raul revealed what he was about to do to you, it was urgent they got these as quickly as possible.
Khonshu wasn't too fond of you - or so he made it appear - but he was even less fond of Raul Bushman. There was no way he would let a worm like that kill you and also make his avatar distraught. The god knew that the loss of you would be detrimental. It would destroy his Moon Knight for good.
The Moon Knight suit came in handy as Marc soared across the starry sky, past the tall buildings in the city with one destination in mind. It wasn't the time to think about anything else than his next few moves. One wrong thought and his demeanour would falter. Your life was on the line here and he wasn't going to mess up now. And to think Raul Bushman had come back to haunt him and he didn't even bother to hide further away than the other side of London. The man was confident he could overpower Marc but that was a grave mistake. Marc would stop at nothing to make sure nothing like this would ever happen again. Had he been wiser, he would've killed Raul all those years ago during their run together in Cairo.
The location turned out to be a townhouse in the fancier parts of London, a mighty building that had stood there for hundreds of years. To people looking from the outside, it was beautiful and nothing about it really screamed that it was used by criminals. Marc's gut twisted painfully when he remembered you were in there, most likely scared for your very life. The way you had apologized to him over the phone as if any of this was your fault had killed a part of him inside. If anything, Marc felt as if this was his fault. You had done nothing wrong. Absolutely nothing at all.
Getting into the place wasn't hard at all. Instead, the trickier part was to be quiet. Marc wasn't going to risk your life by being loud and giving Raul a chance to finish things off before it was too late. The lights were all turned off, which led Marc to believe no one else was there but you and Raul. The people who owned the place rarely used it as it turned out the house was used for criminal gatherings every once in a while. No one lived there. As a hideout, it would've been wonderful if it was only used for hiding from regular people. Hiding from gods and their avatars on the other hand was much trickier.
By now, blood was boiling in Marc's veins. He felt like an enraged animal that was hunting for prey, following its bloody trail with a deep hunger. Nothing could possibly get in his way now. He squeezed the golden crescent moon darts tighter in a desperate attempt to remain calm, steering away the dark thundering clouds in his head that carried with them his deepest fears. With somewhat of a clear mind, silent for once as none of the alters dared to make a peep, Marc navigated down the stairs and toward where he believed you were. His pounding heart was the only sound he could hear, for now, the muscle convulsing dangerously and so hard it wouldn't have been too much of a surprise if Raul could hear it.
"Nooo!" You let out a deep cry, riddled with pain caused by the weapon that had just made contact with your temple. Between all the threats Raul directed at you and your own fears, you felt lost. You didn't know what you were begging of or asking him not to do. There wasn't time for you to gather your thoughts as this scary man was losing his patience with you and with Marc who still hadn't shown up. Despite his claims of not using you as bait to lure him here, you didn't believe him. Raul was looking for revenge and he was willing to kill two birds with one stone.
Knowing you were used as bait to lure your lover into doom only strengthened the guilt. Somehow that hurt more than the physical pain he had brought upon you. No amount of blood or bruises could amount to the realization of how sick and twisted this was and what part you played in it all.
The most recent blow he had delivered to you had been worse than the others, causing your vision to blur and you to feel ill. Your stomach was bubbling in a nauseating way and you weren't sure if you would be able to keep your lunch down for much longer. The throbbing headache was only getting worse and you noticed that you couldn't focus your vision on anything anymore. Was your body giving up this easily or was it trying to defend you from what was to come by numbing everything out quicker? At this point, thinking felt too difficult of a task. Raul was pacing around the room in his rage, probably filming you still but you didn't make any sense of it anymore.
Blood coated your tongue and that was what you focused on as you rested against the thin pillow, wishing you were at home instead. At home, in your bed, next to the man you loved. Instead of tasting the iron in your mouth, you wished you had a cup of hot chocolate that Jake was surprisingly good at making. He usually added a pinch of chili to the sweet drink and it tasted divine. You wished you were in a warm bath with Marc, getting your back rubbed by his loving touch after a long day. You wanted to listen to Steven's voice as he read you to sleep. Who was the god he was reading to you about last night? Taweret? That must've been it. The goddess of fertility and childbirth. Thinking of that in such a dark moment was oddly comforting, bringing you the tiniest amount of peace in the midst of fear you had never felt before, fear that made your bones shake and your heart heavy with sorrow.
Little did you know your last act of consciousness had alerted Marc of your whereabouts. Just as you slipped into unconsciousness, your exhausted body unable to take any more of the pain, you caught a glimpse of a pair of white, glowing eyes. He had found you.
Raul hadn't heard Marc arriving and none of the alarms in the building had alerted him. However, when the man wrapped in mummy bindings and with bright, glowing eyes attacked Raul, he could only feel excitement. This was his chance to defeat Marc once and for all, make him suffer like how Marc had made him suffer. An eye for an eye. Raul took that very seriously.
Marc grabbed Raul by his torso and launched him against the wall so hard it sent the man right into the next room. Dust from within the walls exploded into the air, making it hard to see into the other room for a moment but that didn't stop Marc who followed Raul without any hesitation.
"Took you long enough!" Raul got up from the floor just in time, spitting blood on the floor as he braced himself for Marc's next move.
Marc clenched his jaw together and threw both darts at his former acquaintance, not surprised when all they did was scratch the surface. Marc grabbed more darts from his chest, glad he wasn't going to run out of them anytime soon as they magically reappeared thanks to Khonshu's powers.
As Marc leapt at Raul again, the taller man grabbed him and rolled both of them around. When Marc fell to the ground with Raul, he rolled over and lunged the sharp moon dart right into his chest, ripping a string of curses from his enemy's mouth.
"You're gonna regret ever laying a finger on her," Marc growled eerily, twisting the sharp dart that had sunk into Raul's flesh, feeling how the man's blood soaked his white glove. Having mercy was the last thing on Marc's mind now. He was going to make Raul pay for his mistake.
Meanwhile, you were slipping in and out of consciousness, unable to stay in the dark when you heard crashing and screaming nearby. As you opened your eyes and blinked a few times, you realized what was going on and it sent a rush of adrenaline through you. Marc was there for you but you were still chained to the bed. Trying to free yourself hadn't worked earlier but now that your hands were covered in sweat and blood, you decided to give it another try. Desperately, you tried to wiggle and pull your hands free, biting your tongue when the action hurt. The chains were pressing against your thumbs painfully but you knew you would be able to pull yourself free if you just tugged a little harder.
"Fuck..." You cursed under your breath and then yanked your hands toward your chest. To your surprise, your hands slipped out of the chains. The adrenaline that coursed throughout your body concealed just how much it had hurt. With all the strength you had left and with worry for your loved one who was fighting this monster all alone, you limped to the dresser where the gun was. Bloody fingers wrapped around the weapon and you were surprised by how heavy it felt in your shaking hands. There was a hole in the wall and as you narrowed your eyes looking through it, you saw... Steven? Yes. Steven was definitely the one in the suit, giving Raul a piece of his mind with the help of his truncheons.
"You messed up big time, mate," Steven's choice of words didn't match the hatred in the tone of his voice. He didn't sound much like himself as he was blinded by rage, acting the opposite of the sweet and loving man you knew. As Mr Knight, he used all his strength to deliver a blow against Raul's gut, not finding an ounce of pity as the grown man cried out in pain. The sight was surreal but you couldn't look away. Whether this was a dream or not, you were glad to see it. Perhaps it was wrong, you just didn't care. Your moral compass had been shattered by the hands of the man who had hurt you the same way just moments before.
In the blink of an eye, you found yourself now looking at Jake who didn't let Raul fall on the floor. Instead, he held him by his crimson covered shirt and pressed his fingers into the deep wound Marc had made with his dart earlier, feeling how the blood oozed out of it. "That is for just thinking about her!" He pushed Raul against a bookshelf, the impact knocking the books all over the floor and the shelves snapping in half.
"And this is for hurting her."
When Jake proceeded to attack him again, you had to look away. Part of it was because you felt lightheaded and standing on your own proved to be much more difficult than it should've been. The other part was that Jake's violent ways were not for the faint-hearted to see. As you stumbled on the floor, it alarmed both of the men. For a split second, Jake was distracted as he hadn't noticed you getting up and Raul used that to his advantage.
As Raul tried to bite Jake with his sharp, metal teeth, something within you snapped. You pointed his own gun at him and pulled the trigger, shooting him in the leg before you even knew what you were doing. The loud bang made your ears ring and you dropped the gun, stunned when you watched Raul freeze on the spot. The bullet had pierced him and stopped him from going absolutely feral, yet it didn't seem to put an end to his wrath. Raul turned on his heel and tried to run toward you despite his injuries, seeing red now that you had shot him. Before he could take one too many steps, Marc stopped him.
All you could do was watch from the cold floor as Marc did his job. You had just shot someone. The gun was laying on the floor and you stared at it in disbelief, replaying the moment in your head like a broken record. All your pain was gone and you felt numb. When you looked at your hands, your own blood no longer felt like it belonged to you. Sure, you had shot a horrible man who was about to possibly hurt Jake but it still felt repulsive. A sickening feeling poured all over like thick goo you that you couldn’t shake off. It was useless trying to focus on the fight that was taking place right in front of your nose. The sounds of furniture breaking and bones cracking were completely shut out of your head.
Everything that had happened in just one night was too much for you to handle. There was only so much you could process at once. You had never hurt anyone before. Not like that. This was never supposed to happen. None of this was supposed to happen.
When suddenly Marc was kneeling on the floor in front of you, you finally snapped out of it. The passage of time confused you as you didn't know if ten seconds had passed or ten minutes. Marc looked at you with nothing but concern all over his face, every trace of anger far gone. Had he been talking to you?
"Oh baby thank god you're alive," Marc wanted to hold you but he was terrified of hurting you. He viewed you like an ancient artefact that could turn to dust with one touch. Seeing the evidence of Raul's abuse against you was tearing his heart apart in his chest and he felt each and every tear on a molecular level. You looked so out of it as if your mind was far away although your eyes gazed right into his. The innocent gleam had been chased away from your soul. Marc noticed it immediately and that was crushing. His sweet angel was hurt and he could only blame himself for it.
"Is he...?" Dead was the word you were looking for but couldn't say out loud. Would you be responsible for a man's death? Had the bullet torn apart important veins and caused him to bleed out?
"No," Marc shook his head. Not yet. Raul wasn't far away from it though but Marc was more worried about you than the man who was surely taking his last breaths anyway. The moment he had a chance to see how you were doing, he had taken it. What Marc hadn't expected was how bad everything was. Had it been wishful thinking to imagine he would've made it in time before Raul had hurt you? How foolish had it been of him to imagine Raul fucking Bushman would wait to hurt someone? Marc knew better than anyone what that man was capable of.
"Can you walk?" Marc inquired, not sure if he really wanted to hear your answer though. He wanted to make sure you weren't there to see what he was about to do in a hopeless attempt to grasp onto the remaining purity of your heart and soul. Besides he knew seeing death changed a person in more ways than you'd think. The last thing he wanted was for you to have to witness that.
As you remained quiet, now staring at your trembling hands, Marc knew he wasn't going to get through to you. As gently as he could, he wrapped his strong arms around you and helped you to your feet. Marc saw the gun on the floor next to a phone that was still recording everything, only now facing the floor so it only recorded sound. It was your phone and it was gnarly to think Raul had recorded everything with the ambition in mind to send it all to Marc. Ever so carefully, Marc guided you out of the room that would surely be in many nightmares to come and into the dark hallway. No one else had joined the party as far as he and Khonshu were aware so Marc felt it was safe enough to leave you alone for just a few more seconds.
There was a leather armchair in the hallway and Marc made you sit down on it, which you didn't mind. Everything happened in a blur and it was difficult to focus on anything in that state. He began ripping his Moon Knight costume, the magic bindings reappearing seemingly out of nowhere as he used it to wrap the deepest wounds he could see on you. At that point, Marc had to fight hard against his own body to hold back his tears, trying to stay strong for just a little longer. It was really difficult though when he was wrapping your fingers together to stop the bleeding of a wound that resembled something he had inflicted upon someone else years ago. Marc thought he had seen enough shit for one lifetime but this? This was crushing him in every possible way.
Unbeknownst to you, Khonshu was looming over Marc's shoulder and keeping guard - not that the god would say that out loud. It wasn't that big of a deal for him to make sure his avatar didn't get ambushed, right?
"He is still breathing," Khonshu broke the heavy silence in the townhouse that allowed Marc's thoughts to spiral into a dark place. Khonshu wanted Raul to pay the ultimate price for his actions and waiting patiently for Marc to get a move on was boring. The sooner they got it over with, the better.
Marc nodded to himself and then tightened the material in hopes it would stop the bleeding. "I'll be right back, I promise," He assured you softly. Marc didn't need to say what he was about to do for you weren't stupid. All you could do was nod, feeling nothing at all as Marc stood up and retraced his steps back to the room in which Raul was bleeding out. Not even fear as you sat alone in the dark hallway as your own thoughts drowned out the world around you.
Raul had severely underestimated Marc Spector, not knowing to expect the full wrath of a man enhanced by the powers of an ancient god. Not only that, he had enraged Marc and the two alters who all fronted to show him their rage. In his final moment on the cold, dirty floor, he was staring down into the barrel of the gun and then the man holding it, unsure exactly who he was looking at. Perhaps in some way, all three of them were holding that gun, all three men wanting the same thing - to end this man's life. Raul would never know who truly pulled that trigger.
The very last thing he ever heard was the scolding words of a man who took vengeance very seriously, especially when it came to injustices against the woman he loved;
"You fucked up the moment you decided to go after her and I'm not letting you make that mistake ever again."
Getting home and the entire process of getting washed and your wounds patched up had passed you near completely as you zoned out. It wasn't until Steven was putting one of his t-shirts on you that you really seemed to grasp where you were. Sure, you remembered glimpses of Marc getting you out of that building. He had insisted on taking you to a hospital as he seemed to have lost all care for himself, not giving a damn if the staff would've called the police on him and found out why he was covered in blood. But you didn't want that to happen. You didn't want to see any more people. All you wanted was to go home and be sheltered away from the rest of the world.
Jake was the one who cleaned your wounds. Luckily, they weren't too bad, nothing that would hold you back forever. What had hurt you the most was the mental toll of what had happened. Healing within would take so much longer and Jake was going to stay by your side the entire time. After he had cleaned your wounds, stitched you up and given you a bath, he wasn't sure what to do. It was late, the clock nearing the morning by now but neither of you felt like going to bed.
Steven was fronting at that point and he was worried sick about you because you barely spoke. Not that he was surprised or that he wanted to push the words out of your mouth, he was simply concerned. No one could blame him. The love of his life, the human version of an actual ray of sunshine who was never supposed to get hurt, was scarred so deeply. If he could turn back time, he would've done it in a heartbeat.
"Darling," Steven slipped the shirt over your head gently, making sure to stretch the fabric in order to avoid touching the deep, purple bruises and stitched up wounds. You barely lifted your arms to make an effort to ease the job. You didn't mean to be difficult or distant, it just happened. Every time you tried to focus on the present, a wave of utter pain threatened to crash against you and you didn't want that to happen, so you pushed it away. Prolonging it was most likely only making it worse but you were so scared of embracing what had happened. When you blinked, you could see the man's dead body on the floor, a picture your brain cruelly created to taunt you. Marc hadn’t let you see Raul’s corpse, but your mind was creative enough to give you a front row seat one way or another.
Although Raul had hurt you and stated he wanted to kill Marc, knowing he was dead made you feel strange. That man had been a monster yet you felt shaken by his death somehow. How much part did you have in it? Would they find his body and throw you in a cell? Would his friends come after you? After Marc?
"Hey," Steven could feel his heart continuing to break as he watched that empty look on your face, "talk to me, love. Please. Just please don't bottle this up, I'm here for you." Steven knew that if you kept all of these thoughts to yourself, that eventually it would break you furthermore. It wasn't healthy and yet at the same time, he was aware of the fact talking about it was possibly just as difficult but in the end, it would mean so much.
"He wanted to kill you," You finally managed to say something more than just a word or two. Raul had kidnapped you because he wanted to kill the man you loved that badly. Trying to accept that was hard as you couldn't picture hating Marc so much. Marc was wonderful. One had to be a true monster to find him so despicable.
"But he didn't," Steven reminded you, taking a hold of your right hand and he gave you a gentle squeeze as he intertwined your fingers. You could only watch as Steven brought your knuckles to his lips and he placed a soft kiss on your skin. The tender touch went straight to your heart, pulling at the strings that made you tear up. God you loved him so much and it pained you deeply to shut off like this. If only you knew how, you'd let him back in instantly.
Steven noticed the glistening tears in your weary eyes. "Oh love," it was difficult to keep his own tears at bay once he saw you like that. When you leaned against his chest and wrapped your arms around him, it took the man by surprise. Steven hadn't anticipated that but he was happy to hold you too, knowing you were finally letting your emotions out. Determined as hell, Steven was going to be your rock. In his mind, it was the least he could do.
When you felt his hand between your shoulderblades, caressing you gently and lovingly, you felt yourself relaxing against him. Tears kept spilling from your eyes and you were coughing in-between sobs, but letting it out felt kind of good as well. The tangled web within your soul was unraveling with every tear and every caring touch patched a crack in your heart. You were safe and nothing could happen to you now. They made sure of it.
As you thought of what they had done for you, an enormous amount of gratitude surged from within. You held Steven even tighter, wanting to thank him but you couldn't get the words out of your mouth, lips quivering as you wept. They hadn't only come to rescue you but they made sure Raul would never hurt you or anyone for that matter again. Having only shot him, you felt horrible. No matter how well Jake washed your hands, you couldn't shake off the sticky feeling that coated your skin. It seemed impossible to imagine how taking a life must've been like yet they had done it. For you.
Steven's cologne filled your lungs as you pressed your tear-stained face against his chest, probably leaving marks on the fabric but neither of you really cared. The familiar, clean scent was oddly calming and eventually, the rough and painful sobs calmed down. Your fingers clung onto his back tightly because you longed to stay close to him. His tender embrace and familiar scent was grounding you and every once in a while, Steven would whisper reassuring things to you. Being loved by him made you feel so lucky.
"Thank you," You managed after a while, barely finding your voice after screaming and crying so much in just one day. Your throat felt as dry as the desert but it seemed to be the least of your worries.
"You don't need to thank me, love. Not at all," Steven was genuinely surprised to hear that. He was shocked that you weren't running away from them actually. Why you decided to stay when their presence attracted such horrible people was beyond him but there you were. But you were together, even if you were to leave Steven was terrified more mysterious boogeymen from the past would come after you. Just thinking about it gave him an even worse headache than he already had. All he knew was that he couldn't make you thank them because truth be told, Marc wasn't the only one who felt guilty.
"You saved me," You looked up to him with red and puffy eyes, feeling sick of crying at that point. If only making it stop was that easy.
"You shouldn't have needed saving in the first place," Steven acknowledged, the words feeling like a punch in the gut. He hated that it was true.
They were all blaming themselves and you hated it. Sure, you had blamed yourself for this too but at the end of the day, Raul Bushman had been the one to initiate everything for his own selfish desires. There was one person to blame for this and that person was dead.
Steven felt a tear rolling down his cheek which he didn't even bother to wipe away as he looked at you with such deep love and compassion on his face it was almost overwhelming. What he seemed to tell you with his eyes did more justice than what a thousand words ever could've.
"Steven, my love,," You took a deep shaky breath and then lifted your arm to wipe his stray tear away, noticing how Steven leaned ever so softly against your touch. Hours earlier he had feared he would never be able to do that again. "Don't blame yourself. None of you should."
Steven didn't say it, but he instantly thought of Marc who had completely shut himself off. Not even Jake could reach him. Marc was loathing in guilt and no one knew when he would front again as he had made it very clear he felt as if he was a curse upon you. A wretched old affliction that was destined to continue causing you harm no matter what he attempted to do to stop it.
Steven blinked as the tears just kept coming. He felt awful because he thought he was supposed to be the strong one to be there for you but as time passed, he too began to process everything that happened. Had they been late, you would've been long gone by now. Tonight had been too dangerous, the worst possible scenario had been too close to coming true.
As you felt Steven shaking underneath your touch, you swore you wanted to bring Raul back from the dead just to kill him again. Seeing the kind man that you loved so much being in so much pain over worry he felt for you was like walking on burning shards of glass. You were just both two people who had been terrified of losing one another and you both carried guilt that you absolutely shouldn't have.
You cupped Steven's face, pulling him toward you as he willingly let you do so just to press a kiss on the bridge of his nose. Then you guided him to the crook of your neck, wrapping your arms over his shoulder and allowing Steven to pull you closer by the waist. The two of you held onto each other as if you were scared of letting of. The only comfort in the world you could find was in each other's arms. Steven inhaled your scent, convinced he could find paradise in the soapy fragrance. It was safe because it was you. You were alright.
Eventually, the exhaustion caught up to you. Your eyelids felt heavy as you leaned against Steven, not sure if you were about to yawn or sob as your lips parted. A yawn ripped from you and you somehow relaxed even more, unaware of how tense you had actually been. If Steven had let you, you would've fallen asleep just like that, in his arms where you felt separated you from everything else, the rotten outside world. The bubble he created for you was soothing, a place where one could stay forever and feel okay.
The last thing you remembered before passing out from pure exhaustion was Steven ever so carefully guiding you toward the pillows and tucking you in. Whether he kissed your forehead or you just dreamt it, you didn't know but it didn't really matter. After that, everything was filmy. Pitch black unconsciousness swallowed you whole and for a moment, the misery that had soaked into your every cell was far away.
Jake couldn't sleep. Steven had dosed off into broken sleep but it was Jake who woke up and stayed awake afterwards. It wasn't a difficult task for him to keep his eyes open as the sun began to rise outside. He had made sure the front door was locked and that no shady people were around the apartment complex. Jake had even gone out of his way to make sure their tracks were covered. All seemed well, at least on paper. No one could prove what they had done and no one was coming for you. All seemed well yet you were far from well as far as Jake was concerned.
He sat down on the bed eventually and tried to relax, making sure he didn't disturb your much needed rest. Jake knew the danger had been dealt with but part of him couldn't relax. Something cruel within told him people were out there, waiting for the first chance they'd get to harm you. So there he was, guarding you and at the very least giving you a chance to rest. As Jake's dark brown eyes focused on the steady rise and fall of your chest, he felt how deep, sharp claws sunk into his heart. Anger bubbled within him but to his surprise, that wasn't strong enough to push away the sorrow he harboured. Someone had hurt you and Jake couldn't comprehend it.
As you looked at your sleeping figure, studying the way your lashes touched your cheeks and how your lips parted a little bit when your cheek squished against the soft pillow, he struggled to comprehend how anyone was capable of harming you. Dark eyes roamed down your body, scarring every little bruise and cut on your exposed skin. Eventually, Jake looked at your fingers that clutched onto the blanket. He remembered when Marc had taken Raul's fingers as a wicked warning to keep his hands off of people. It had been a mistake to simply warn a man like that. They should've gotten rid of him then and there.
Raul hadn't just hurt you. All those years ago, while on a mission in Cairo they had come across surprise witnesses. People who weren't supposed to be there. People that the higher ups who paid them wanted to get rid of. Marc hadn't had it in him to kill a child but Raul almost did that. Almost, as Marc had stopped him just in time. That's why Marc had done what he did, hoping it would keep Raul from ever even thinking about hurting kids. Surely there had to be a line drawn somewhere, right? Not for Raul. Raul didn't care about who he had to get rid of in order to succeed with his ambitions. At least, he would never get another chance to do anything ever again.
When you yelped, breaking the silence that had lingered in the flat, Jake nearly jumped to his feet. He had been deep in thought that he hadn't heard you waking up so afraid. For a moment, you felt panicked and you had to pull your hands to your chest to make sure you weren't chained to a bedframe. Being able to move freely was so relieving but it didn't last long when you noticed the dull ache in your every bone and muscle.
Jake took a hold of your hand, wanting to comfort you in any way he could as you woke up to a new day. "You're safe, mi vida. I've got you."
Hearing Jake's voice made you feel so much lighter instantly. Although you had been able to sleep for a few hours, you somehow felt more tired now than you did before falling asleep. But it didn't matter. You enjoyed the fact that you were safe, just as Jake promised. Being home and completely shielded from any danger was a wonderful feeling and you focused on that instead of the sense of impending doom that was trying to shake you off balance. Nothing bad would happen now.
"Have you slept at all?" You mumbled tiredly as you sat up, trying to rub the weariness from your eyes. It felt like your body was on fire, not in a good way. Last night, the adrenaline had managed to dull most of the pain but now that you knew you were safe and had been able to relax, the discomfort seemed to have intensified.
"A little," Jake shrugged as he stood up. He could tell by the way you were moving that you were hurting so he decided to grab painkillers and a glass of water. As he returned from the kitchen with them, he gave you the pill and made sure you drank enough water. Jake knew how to be caring and attentive too, he just wasn't too verbal about it. Words didn't come easily to him, or when they did the timing wasn't the best either. Actions spoke louder than words anyway, he thought.
That day you didn't manage to get much done, not the next few days either for that matter. As the shock from the horrendous night still rattled you all, you could only stay inside. As the third day came around the corner, you were still mostly in bed or on the couch, unable to pull your head out of the dreadful place it found itself in. Jake and Steven had both fronted many times but it was mostly Steven who kept you company and tried to cheer you up. Marc hadn't shown up not even once after he had brought you back home. He hadn't come back as he promised. Not even when you were asleep.
Steven had gotten out of bed for the day, leaving you to slumber in hopes you were able to relax at least in your rest. You fell asleep again several times, only sleeping for a few minutes at a time when sudden fear woke you up again. It always seemed to come out of the blue and it passed just as quickly. The more it kept happening, the worse it felt. Around the time the sun was setting again and you still hadn't gotten out of bed, your anxiety was threatening to get the best of you.
Steven was in the kitchen, making something for you to eat since you hadn't eaten much at all yet. He wanted to take care of you and covering the basics such as making sure you ate was the least he felt he could do. As he stirred the pasta sauce, Steven had to really keep fight to keep his negative thoughts away. He hadn't slept well, obviously, and it seemed to take a toll on him now. He had almost lost you. No matter how many times he reminded himself that you were alright, he felt rotten to the core. What had he done if Raul had actually succeeded in his plan? Steven couldn't even imagine the scenario. That was too sinister.
The next time your anxiety awoke you, it felt like an invisible hand was squeezing at your throat. You sat up in bed and could physically feel your stomach turning upside down in distress. You bent over and dug your nails into your thighs, trying to drown your whimpers by biting your lips together. Only one thing repeated itself in your mind like a chant, you shot someone. You almost died and you shot someone. You did that.
As a sick feeling within you only grew worse, you forced yourself out of bed and to the bathroom. Unsure whether you'd get sick or not, you decided to sit down on the cold tile floor near the toilet just in case. That's when the tears got to you again and it was frustrating, making you entangle your fingers in your hair and scratch at your scalp. Why couldn't you stay calm? Why couldn't you accept that it was over? What happened had happened and now everything was fine. Why was it so damn hard to stay calm?
Marc. You missed Marc. He had shut off completely and it was devastating. Was he angry at you? Could it be? Raul had done this to anger Marc specifically. Did Marc blame you in some way? As wrong as it seemed, you weren't sure if anything could surprise you anymore. The longer he stayed hidden, the longer you were left to make your own conclusions.
"Love? Are you in here? I've made dinner," Steven's voice snapped you out of your thoughts. Hearing him was like music to your ears. He was like a warm blanket that chased away the coldness that threatened to turn you to ice. Your heart swelled in your chest with love for him because you were sure you'd be a wreck without the sweet man.
"Yeah," After taking a few deep breaths, you felt somewhat better and got up from the floor. As long as you tried getting out of your head, you were sure you'd feel better. So you walked out of the bathroom and let Steven serve you a plate of pasta although you were certain you could've helped yourself too. Steven was going out of his way to be thoughtful and as nice as it was, it made you fear he was doing so out of guilt. How long would this last? How long would you all be broken because of one man?
The two of you sat on the couch as you ate, mindlessly watching the TV that filled in the silent gaps. Usually, you and Steven would be talking nonstop and probably pissing off the neighbours too. Now conversation was hard. Just existing felt like a chore but at least every day that passed made it a little bit less awful.
"Steven?" You were nervous about what you wanted to say so you avoided facing him, instead focusing on the pasta that swirled around your fork.
"Yes?"
By now, you could feel the familiar heavy thud of your heart. "Have you heard from Marc?"
Steven wasn't a fool. He knew you noticed Marc's absence as well as he and Jake did too, if not even better. Until now, neither of you had mentioned it though. Steven didn't want to upset you any more than people already had. For a split second, he thought of brushing it off with a somewhat cheerful statement, but discarded that quickly. You didn't deserve that. You were hurt, not stupid. Treating you like a child and walking on eggshells around you couldn't possibly do any more good than it would do harm.
With a sigh, Steven put his plate down on the coffeetable right next to a book he hadn't touched in days now.
"No, not really," Steven admitted and dared to glance your way. "I'm sorry."
“‘s not your fault.”
“Well I’m still sorry, love.”
"Is he mad?" You mimicked Steven by placing your plate on the coffeetable, too agitated to focus on eating the rest of your food. The queasy feeling from earlier was creeping right back to you at an alarming rate. To say you were discouraged was an understatement, going through a cycle of sickness and dread ten times an hour.
Steven couldn't believe you honestly thought so. "Mad?" He had to be sure he heard right. When he saw the fearful look on your face, he knew he had. "No, not at all. He's just... well, if he's mad at anyone it's at himself."
"He can't blame himself for what happened!" You hoped that somehow, someway, Marc could hear you. "Gosh he's so stubborn sometimes," You didn't mean it in a malicious way, not at all. You loved Marc and you wished you could just speak to him and convince him he wasn't blameworthy of anything.
"Yeah," Steven pulled his lips into a thin line, side-glancing at the reflection in Gus' tank. Marc was there but he certainly wasn't saying anything. The man seemed out of it, his usual demeanour completely shattered. Jake was trying to convince Marc to just talk to you. Steven wished you could hear and see what he was seeing sometimes.
In an attempt to ease your mind, Steven moved closer to you on the couch and invited you into a hug. The people on the television were overly cheerful and giddy considering the gloomy atmosphere in the flat as bright colours flashed from the screen, painting the otherwise dark room in pinks and yellows. You leaned against Steven's welcoming frame and tried to stay calm, knowing Marc was in there somewhere. He'd have to show up sooner or later, right? He couldn't hide from you forever.
For once, it was you who was awake and Steven was asleep. Or at least you had been cuddling with Steven just moments earlier. It was a dead giveaway he was finally sleeping when you heard a light snore every once in a while between the deep and calm breaths. For a moment, you focused on that alone, letting the simple sounds of his breaths and heartbeat chase away the rest of the world. To you, sleep didn't come easy that night and neither were you sleepy. Just tired in every other possible way.
"I wish you weren't so hard on yourself, Marc," The words left your mouth as hardly louder than a whisper, as you did not wish to wake him up. The longer Marc stayed hidden, either too ashamed to face you or too heartbroken to front, you felt so sorry for him. It was killing you to know Marc couldn't bring himself to talk to you.
Fingers carefully traced the blanket that weighed over his waist. You rested your palm against his chest, needing to feel the subtle movement that kept you grounded to this moment. Slowly you got closer so that you could pepper kisses along his shoulder, inhaling his scent and enjoying the warmth of his body against yours. Even if you couldn't sleep, being close like this brought you some sort of relaxation and peace.
"I love you." Perhaps it was foolish, perhaps it was exactly what you needed, you closed your eyes and held onto him tighter, picturing a night from many weeks ago that reminded you of Marc. In your mind, it was that night and nothing horrible had happened yet. You were just close to each other, just two lovers enjoying the calm night after a lovely day together. There was no pain or guilt to be seen or felt.
The next morning, it was Marc that awoke to a new day. It was still early, way too early to actually get out of bed but he quickly knew he wouldn't be able to fall asleep again. Your body was pressed against his and Marc felt his heart sinking to the very bottom of his stomach. He hadn't been able to speak to you or even really look at you since that night. Now there he was, with an arm wrapped around you and panic stirring within him. Although part of him longed to hold you and make sure you were alright, it almost physically pained him to be there. He saw the healing bruises on your skin, now tinted in a yellowish hue. They were scattered all over you, each small and bigger bruise making Marc enraged. How had he let this happen?
Gently, Marc pulled the blanket aside more, revealing your thighs and seeing the damage all the way down your legs. He saw the cut Jake had stitched in the bathroom that night. Marc traced his fingers over your skin so softly he wasn't even sure he was really touching you. Memories of that night came back to him, visions he had been stuck thinking of for a week straight with seemingly no break. He remembered how scared he felt when he first saw you chained to that bed. Marc had been terrified when he learned it was Raul who held you captive. That night was easily the worst of his life that was full of horrible days and nights. That night he almost lost you, the light of his dark and gloomy life.
"Marc?" You hadn't been in deep sleep so when you sensed shifting next to you, it was easy to tell you weren't the only one awake. It had been wishful thinking to picture it was Marc but sometimes wishful thinking turned out to be correct.
You saw it in his eyes. There was a familiar look in those brown irises, a light that only shone for him. Then you saw it in the way he carried himself. There were small things that gave the truth away. It really was Marc. Instantly, you felt wide awake as you faced your lover, nearly afraid to blink in case he would disappear again. "Marc..."
"I didn't mean to wake you," Marc failed to meet your gaze, holding himself together by a thread that was just about to snap. He thought about how he had carried you, how your blood had stained his clothes and how he was convinced you would see him as the monster he thought he was after everything that happened. You were all he had and despite being right next to you, Marc felt as if he had lost you already. After everything that happened, he knew nothing would ever be the same and he blamed himself for it all.
As he moved away from you, throwing his legs off the edge of the bed so he was sitting with his back facing you, it was clear he wanted to be anywhere but there. The bed felt colder and despite being so close to Marc, it felt like there were worlds between you.
Quietly, you got out of bed, the white t-shirt being the only fabric that covered you from the night. Carefully, you sat down on the edge of the bed next to Marc, relief washing over you when he didn’t get up and leave. Instead, Marc sighed deeply and turned to face you, now with tears in his eyes. Tears. As if you all hadn’t gotten sick and tired of those by now. The fact you hadn’t drowned in them yet was a miracle.
“Marc,” You searched for his hand, intertwining your fingers with his for the first time in what felt like a small eternity. “I missed you.”
The words affected him more than you’d ever know. Marc could still not believe you weren’t angry at him. Knowing you wanted to be by his side after everything was simply mind boggling.
“I missed you too, baby,” Marc admitted, finally beginning to speak about what had happened. Perhaps it was the closeness that made him feel like it was time or the fact that keeping everything bottled up was slowly killing him, either way Marc was encouraged to go on. “Fuck, I...I don’t know what to say. I can’t believe you’re still here. I thought I’d lose you.”
“Marc-”
“What happened was never supposed to happen. I should’ve made sure of that long ago!”
“Marc!” You couldn’t let him sit there and keep blaming himself. Eventually the load he was carrying would break him and that would break you too.
He looked at you wide eyed, resembling a lost puppy. Seeing Marc like this was so unusual, he looked at you for guidance and forgiveness although forgiveness was something he never needed to ask for. It wasn’t needed in the first place but even if it were, you knew in your heart you’d forgive him a million times.
“What happened was not your fault,” Each word you said was clear and loud so that he couldn’t possibly mishear you. “The only person to blame for it is now dead and gone. Raul chose to do this. Not you, not me. He is the only one who should feel guilty.”
“You could’ve died,” Marc still didn’t budge, holding your hand a little tighter as he stated that. There was a deep desire within him that made him long to feel you even closer just as a reminder that you were alive.
“But I didn’t. I’m here thanks to you,” There were two sides two every situation. Marc could only see what almost happened and you were there to remind him of what actually happened, something he didn’t seem to consider at all.
“I could walk into traffic and get run over by a car tomorrow. I could get targeted by a random robber in a sketchy alleyway. Bad things happen and we can’t predict that. No one knows how much time we have but I know that no matter what, Raul’s actions weren’t your fault,” You didn’t mean to sound cruel but your words carried truth in them. No one could blame themselves for the unseen actions of the future. No one.
Like magic, something finally seemed to click in Marc’s mind. His shoulders relaxed and you could feel the tension melting from his muscles. When he let go of your hand just so he could envelope you in a hug, you wanted to thank whatever deity or god that must’ve given you this miracle.
Soon you found yourself on Marc’s lap, breathing in the subtle hints of his cologne as you rested your face against his shoulder. Marc held you tightly, but he was aware of your injuries so the man was mindful, not aiming to hurt you. His rough hand - now ever so gentle - was caressing the back of your head as his arm wrapped around you, keeping you close. Then at last, Marc let his tears rain down his face. The lid of the bottle was opened and you had knocked it over, letting it all spill out.
“I love you so much,” You whispered to him, repeating the confession a few times between soft kisses against his warm skin. You comforted Marc to the best of your abilities, playing with the dark curls at the nape of his neck and ever so often wiping away the tears that were running down his throat.
“I love you too,” Marc had to return those words, his heart set aflame from love and passion that he felt for you. It was a fire no one could ever put out.
Marc held onto you for dear life, wanting to feel your heartbeat against his, to feel your chest expanding with air. Your scent calmed him as he let his sorrow out. Although only a few days had passed since you two last spoke, to him it felt like months. Looking back at how scared he had felt made him feel sick. It worsened when he couldn’t shake away the image of you in that fucking room. That was something no amount of words could ever clean from his memory.
But there you were. Not in a creepy room at the mercy of one of the most dangerous people Marc knew of. No. You were in his arms, in your bed and no one else could possibly bother you right now.
To Marc, this was all that mattered.
You were safe.

::: Paris, March 1st, 2011 :::
Joey stared at the ceiling of her room and sighed. She was alone. It was already midnight. She was happy she finally had a room on her own, after weeks traveling on a bus with the band. They were in Paris, and she was weary. But still, she couldn’t sleep. She stared at her phone and sighed. Matthew had said “I’ll call you back” an hour ago, and still, he hadn’t called her back. That was killing her.
She hadn’t seen her fiancé in over a month, and they were both in different time zones, which made it pretty hard to talk. She was nine hours ahead. At the moment, she was fighting to stay awake to talk to him, but he wasn’t calling her. Would it be wrong if she insisted? Matthew was working… maybe Joey should just sleep. She was weary after all, too much traveling, too many shows. That tour was fucking eternal, and she just wanted to go home.
The young woman walked to her bag, grabbed one of Matthew’s shirts, and put it on a pillow. Yes, she dressed a pillow in her boyfriend’s clothes. That’s how much she missed him. She could deal with loneliness ‘cos she was used to being alone. Still, somehow, she couldn’t deal with the loneliness that meant being far from Matthew.
- "It’s a good thing I decided to marry him then"- she said to herself as she stared at the ring on her finger.
A big part of her wanted to time travel and tell four-year-old Joey everything would be ok, that she was going to be happy after all. That she was going to manage to trust not one but two people. Her soon-to-be husband and her best friend, Mikey Way. If there was something she could cherish from being on tour with My Chem for months now, it was calling Michael James her brother.
Joey wrapped her arms around “Mattpillow” and smelled his perfume on it. Maybe it was better to text him and tell him she was gonna call earlier; it was… three in Los Angeles. If she set the alarm at six in the morning, she could catch him around nine. Yeah, that was much better.
- “Call you later. I’ll sleep a little, love you! Take care!”- she texted him.
::: Barcelona, March 5th, 2011 :::
Mikey, Ray, and Joey walked outside the arena, searching for the best sangria they could find before the show. Joey’s mom had sent them on that quest, repeating over and over again there was no way they left Spain without having tasted it. And considering it was alcohol, they didn’t argue a lot with Mrs. Sigmundsson.
- "Dude, I’m so fucking tired"- Mikey whined as he finished his hundredth cup of coffee of the day.
- "I know, I need a break from touring"- Joey said and yawned- "I wanna go home."
- "Me too"- Ray added and looked at his phone- "I miss my wife."
- "Oh, shut up!"- Mikey argued right away- "I don’t wanna go over this conversation again, you have someone you love, and you miss them. I don’t miss home, I have no one, end of the story"- Joey and Ray looked at each other and raised an eyebrow.
- "Is your underwear too tight today, or are you just being a little bitch because you want to?"- Joey asked right away, Ray chuckled, but Mikey didn’t think it was funny.
- "Shut up, Bug."
- "Not in the mood to be nice, then."
- "Nop"- that last “p” sounded like the end of it. But that wasn’t going to stop Joey.
- "Sorry, we are…"- what stopped Joey was her cellphone. Her eyes shone like diamonds when she saw Matthew’s face at the other side of the screen, waking up.
- "Yami! Good morning!"
- "Akumu!!!"- Ray and Mikey looked at her and walked a little faster to give her some privacy.
- "Is she still sleeping with the “Mattpillow”?"- Toro asked- "That shit is creepy"- and Way laughed, finally, he had been pretty serious that day. And the day before.
- "Yeah, that’s a thing. I’ve taken pictures I wanna use to blackmail her in case I ever need it."
- "Good plan"- Ray looked around. Joey was standing half a block behind, still on the phone- "Mikey, are you ok?"
- "Yeah, why?"
- "‘Cos you don’t seem to be ok at all,"- Toro felt it was his duty as a friend to tell what had been in his mind for the last couple of weeks- "Dude I’m sorry, I just… don’t think you… it’s shitty you are getting a divorce. I just don’t think you are taking it well."
- "Can you take a divorce well?"- Mikey simply replied, and that was enough to shut Ray up.
- "I’m just trying to tell you I’m here if you want to talk, and you don’t have to get so drunk every time we are out or whatever."
- "Is this an intervention? ‘Cos we had many those for Gerard back in the days. I can recognize an intervention."
- "No, Mikey! It’s not. Everybody should be here reading letters if it was"- Ray had a point- "I’m just trying to tell you, I’m here for you, man. And we can talk about anything."
- "I know, Ray… I just… don’t feel..."
- "You don’t feel like talking, I know, you haven’t talked about it, ever I guess… and I don’t feel that’s working for you. I’m scared and worried, and I’m your friend, I had to tell you."
Way and Toro stared at each other in silence for a few seconds. Mikey knew Ray was right; he had shut down from all his friends, basically for the last three months or so. Still, he didn’t feel ready to share any kind of thought or feeling with any of them.
- "Ok kids, around the block, there’s a place called “Las tapas de Pepe.” Apparently, they have a killer sangria"- Joey clapped and walked past them on her way to the bar.
- "Wait, how do you know that?"
- "Because, Raúl me enseñó muchas cosas nuevas, (Raul taught me a lot of new things)"- the two musicians looked at her frowning not getting a word, so the girl turned to them and smiled- "That guy over there, his name is Raúl. I asked for sangria, he gave me an address. Come on!"
Joey turned around again, avoiding looking sad in front of her friends. The truth was, she wasn’t doing that well about being far from Matthew. It was getting too hard. She was thinking about quitting. And every time she talked to him, she was feeling more sure about that decision. She never told him, though. She didn’t want to make him feel responsible in case she made a mistake leaving the job. She also didn’t want him to know how much influence he had on her, Joey didn’t want to lose power in his life, she didn’t want to stop being independent, but it was hard.
::: Germany, March 8th, 2011 :::
Mikey was sugar rushed, jumping around the bunks as the bus traveled from Zurich to Munich. He and Joey had bought most of the chocolates in Switzerland and ate half of them in less than two hours. They were in heaven. Sugar heaven.
- "Can you please stop it?"- Gerard yelled at them from his bunk.
- "Nope"- his younger brother answered and jumped like a kid on top of him.
- "Leave me alone! I wanna sleep!"
- "Fine. Come on, Bug, let’s get away from this loser"- his words were so childish Joey burst out laughing.
- "Get in, loser, we are going shopping"- Joey said and flipped her hair. Gerard stared at her walking away with his brother, and groaned as he covered his head with the pillow.
He was fucked.
The last month had been torture for him. Joey was now not even talking to him. Never. It felt she honestly hated him, and he knew he couldn’t ask. Lynz kept asking for her, and he was sure she suspected something was going on.
- "So, have you and the guys have fun these days?"- she had asked earlier that day when he called her before the show.
- "Fun like going out fun? No, we are too tired to move. These weeks have been killers."
- "So you are all just at the bus locked the whole time?"
- "Pretty much"
- "On each other’s faces?"
- "Yeah… I wanna kill Mikey."
- "And how’s Joey doing?"
- "Good… we haven’t talked much."
- "She hadn’t talked to you or you hadn’t?"- the singer made a pause thinking about that question, and most of all thinking what would be an intelligent answer to that.
- "We don’t share a lot"- that all he had- "I guess we don’t talk to each other"- he made a pause and lit a cigarette, walking on his own through the backstage- "Why do you ask?"
- "I don’t know, I guess you never talk about her, and I thought it might be because you have…"- Lynz made a pause to make her husband even more nervous- "A problem with her or something."
- "No, we don’t have a problem, we aren’t friends, that’s all…"
Now on the bus, Gerard closed his eyes, still hiding under the pillow, Joey’s laughter all around him, while Frank and Ray played video games. What was he going to do?
::: At the bus, close to Munich. March 9th, 2011 :::
It was Matthew’s birthday, and Joey was miserable ‘cos she couldn’t spend the day with him. But still, she set her alarm at eight am and locked herself in the back of the bus, texting him. She wanted to be the first one to sing happy birthday to him. And so she waited, looking at the clock.
She went through old pictures to kill time, watched part of a movie Mikey had left on the DVD the night before. Matthew didn’t reply to her text. And so she waited longer. Joey wanted to call him at midnight. She was nine hours ahead. Minute by minute, she waited. Until it was time. She smiled and dialed. Nothing. Again. Nothing.
- "Where the fuck are you?"- her stomach was made a knot as her brows furrowed. Third call. Matthew finally picked up the FaceTime call.
- "Yami!!!"- he yelled, wasted- "It’s a party!"- he pointed around and moved the camera of his phone like a maniac, making Joey dizzy right away. No wonder why he wasn’t picking up.
- "Happy birthday, Akumu!"
- "Hey! Hey!"- he tried to walk through a lot of people as Joey frowned, wondering where the hell her fiancée was.
- "Wild party!"- she said as soon as she noticed Gubler had locked himself in a bathroom to talk.
- "Yeah! The guys set a little surprise party for me"- he slurred and smiled- "I love you."
- "I love you too."
- "No, I love you more. Why aren’t you here?"
- "‘Cos I’m working, but I’ll be home in two weeks, so wait for me."
- "I want you here now."
- "I wish I was there."
- "Then quit"- Joey sighed. Arguing was useless; Matthew was drunk.
- "Hey! Akumu, is Paget there? Is she gonna drive you home?"
- "No, she’s not here."
- "You are not partying with your friends?"
- "Yeah, with the guys from the movie"- Joey raised an eyebrow, thinking she had no idea where Matthew was or with who.
- "Are you sure you are ok?"
- "Yeah, baby! It’s my birthday, we are gonna party like it’s my birthday!"- Joey’s heart ached at the thought of what could go wrong. But she loved and trusted her boyfriend, and she knew he would never hurt her.
- "Hey Matthew"- she said and looked straight into his eyes through the camera- "I love you."
- "I love you too."
- "I’ve got your heart here with me all the time"- she showed him her necklace, and he nodded- "There’s gonna be a present from me waiting for you when you get home."
- "Nice!"- Joey smiled, thinking it was probably Matthew wasn’t going to remember that conversation- "Listen, Yami, someone is trying to get into the bathroom."
- "That’s ok, I’ll call you later, ok dorky?"- he nodded and waved, the girl kissed the screen, but he had already hung down.
Joey hated being in Germany at the moment.
Could Gubler be an asshole and cheat? No way, Joey trusted him with her eyes wide shut. But he was hot and drunk, and she was sure there were more than just a couple of girls trying to get into his pants. If the guys were there- his friends- she wouldn’t even worry about it. But they weren’t. He was with some random people from the set she hadn’t even met.
Soon the regret of their last fight came to mind. They weren’t mad at each other, but perhaps… no, there’s no way he would be an asshole because of that stupid fight. It was a silly fight for her. Was it serious for him?
A few nights before, Matthew had gotten mad at a conversation with Joey ‘cos she didn’t want to change her last name. That’s what he picked from the conversation. She just said she didn’t think it was necessary to do so. He didn’t take it that well.
- "What’s the problem with changing your name?"
- "I’m just saying the tradition of women changing their last names after they marry it’s a bit old fashion. It makes me think women are still treated like an object that “belongs” to a man."
- "So you won’t change your last name?"- the girl frowned, staring at Matthew’s wide-opened eyes on the screen.
- "That’s not… do you want me to change it?"
- "Yes! of course, I do! you are gonna be my wife!"
- "So? If I’m still Joey Sveinbjörndottir after we marry, I won’t be your wife?"
- "That’s not what I meant"- Gubler was more frustrated than he had felt in months over any conversation they had ever had. This time, it was serious.
- "Then what is it?"
- "I’m just saying you should change your last name ‘cos we will be married, and I’d love for you to be Mrs. Gubler."
- "I will be your wife, isn’t that enough?"
- "Why do you always have to be so fucking independent?"- Matthew just yelled- "Can you just try to understand I want you to be mine? My wife! And I want everybody to know it!"
- "So you wanna put me on display?"
- "No!! Fuck no!!"- Matthew was tired and defeated. It seemed that stupid argument was more about a bunch of little things that had grown inside his head instead of just about the last name.
- "Why can’t I be independent? Is that a bad thing?"
- "No! It’s a good thing! I just... "- Matthew bit his tongue and sighed, trying to rearrange the thoughts in his head. He needed to make sure whatever he was going to say would explain his feelings clearly.
- "You just?"- Joey asked, standing in the middle of the hotel room she was staying at that night. She just stared at the wall, thinking she had no idea what had gotten into her boyfriend’s head.
- "I just don’t feel you need me sometimes."
- "What? Are you crazy?"
- "No, that’s what I feel. Are you gonna blame me for feeling?"
- "Well, you are being silly!"
Joey was real angry at him at the moment. Everything he had said hurt her. It seemed he had insulted all the kindness and love she had given him when it was very hard for her to show her feelings and let someone into her heart.
- "What is it that you want from me, Matthew? Do you want me to be needy and clingy? ‘Cos you know that’s not who I am!"
- "I know that! I just sometimes… it feels like you’d be great without me."
- "What?"
- "Like you don’t…"- but the girl didn’t let him continue.
- "Don’t say you feel I don’t love you!"
- "I know you love me."
- "Then?"
- "You don’t depend on me the way I depend on you"- the drummer was in shock at those words. Did he depend on her?- "You leave me here, you tour the world, you are happy, I’m here, I miss you. Every time we talk, you are shining… meanwhile, I am here, dying, waiting to be with you!"
- "First of all, you could come!"
- "I’m working too!"- but Joey cut him off and continued.
- "Second, who says I don’t miss you? Just because I’m not crying when we talk doesn’t mean I am not miserable! Matthew! What the fuck are you saying? I fucking love you with my whole life! I hate being here when I could be there with you at this very same minute doing anything together, even when that anything is staring at the wall! But I have to work, and I happen to love my job, the same way you love yours! You can’t blame me for not quitting!"
Joey bit her lips as she stared at Matthew at the other side of the screen. She was making her best not to cry. She had never been so mad at her fiancé before.
- "I just…"- he tried to continue, but his voice broke- "I feel like I’m going insane here without you"- tears fell from his eyes as Joey wiped off hers from her cheeks.
- "Matthew, I miss you too! Fuck! I’m going crazy, just like you! I want to be there. I wanna kiss you! I wanna make love to you! But… you can’t ask me to be someone I’m not! Can’t you just be happy your girlfriend loves you, misses you, and will marry you as soon as she finishes touring?"
Gubler sighed and stared at her.
- "I wanna spend the rest of my life with you, Matthew Gray Gubler. I don’t care about the last name. I don’t care about anything as long as you are beside me."
The young man sighed and cut her a short smile.
- "How do you always end up making me feel like a dork for getting mad at you?"
- "‘Cos I’m gonna be your wife, that’s my job"- she chuckled, and they stared in silence for a few seconds.
- "I love you so much, Joey."
- "I love you more, Matthew Gray."
That had been days before. Was Matthew still upset at her because of that? No way. He didn’t sound mad at all. He was just drunk and happy to celebrate his birthday.
- "You are overthinking this ‘cos you are far from him"- the girl reassured herself out loud and looked at the screen again- “Love you dorky”- she typed and sent her boyfriend a message. That was something he couldn’t forget.
The girl stayed still looking at the TV in front of her for a few seconds, but the knot in her stomach was too tight, and the thoughts in her head were too scary. She felt sick, scared, anxious.
Joey was jealous, shit!
She ended up puking in the bus’s tiny bathroom, just like every time she felt seriously distressed.
- "Hey, are you ok?"- Gerard found her on the bathroom floor, flushing, pale, and a little weak.
- "Yeah…"
- "Are you sick?"
- "No, I just… I’m ok."
- "Sure?"
- "Yeah, I just need an herbal tea. I felt dizzy all of a sudden"- she held the hand he offered her and stood up.
- "I’ll put on the kettle"- Joey stumbled a little as she walked with Gerard to the front of the bus.
- "Hey Bug"- she heard Mikey’s voice as he opened the curtain of his bunk. She slowly moved over and sat next to him- "Did you talk to Matthew?"
- "Yeah, he was wasted"- and Mikey chuckled.
- "That’s my boy."
- "I didn’t like it."
- "Come on, he is a good kid. He will probably drink his liver away and then go to bed, have a killer hangover, and talk to you until either of you falls asleep like he always does."
Mikey reassured her, and the girl chuckled, nodding. Her friend was right. She was still dizzy, though, so she carefully laid down next to him and felt his arms around her slowly.
- "Bug, you are freezing."
- "I’m ok. Gerard is making me an herbal tea… I should do it, actually; he ain’t my nanny"- the girl tried to stand up, but Mikey held her.
- "You should get into your bunk for another while. You might be getting the flu."
- "I’m ok, trust me"- she finally stood up and smiled at her friend.
- "Here, take my hoodie."
- "Thanks… it stinks."
- "But it’s warm, does the trick"- she smiled and put it on. Gerard had just left the cup of tea on the table. She walked over slowly and cut him a smile. An honest and nice smile.
- "Thank you, Gerard."
- "You can call me Gee, you know"- she nodded and sat down by the table.
Gerard sat in front of her, sipping his fresh cup of coffee. The two of them were quiet. Joey was thinking about Gubler. What was he doing at that very exact moment? Why wasn’t she there? How would it have been if they were together? They would probably be naked in his bed. And that would be great. It would be way much better than what she was doing at the moment, sitting on a bus staring at the window.
- "Are you sure you are alright?"- he whispered, and she nodded again- "Do you wanna go back to bed? I mean bunk."
- "No, I’m fine here… besides, we should be getting ready…"- she stayed quiet and looked outside- "Where are we?"
- "Munich"
- "Great… we had a hotel room here, right?"
- "Yeah"
- "Finally!!!"- she raised her arms, and he chuckled- "I need a real bed."
- "Me too."
- "And a long fucking bath"- he nodded and looked into her eyes. They were stuck in the cup of tea again.
- "We’ve got the Valencia gig in a couple of days."
- "Right! The MTV streamed no stressful at all show in Spain"- he chuckled and nodded.
- "Nervous?"
- "Not really"- she lied, the fact MTV was going to stream the show was freaking her out, but at the moment, she didn’t care that much. Her head was back in Los Angeles. Her phone hummed, and she quickly grabbed it. “I love you too,” Matthew had written, and a deep sigh came from her lips. Gerard was going to ask something, but not a word came from his lips. Instead, Jeff - their tour manager - opened the door and smiled.
- "I got you an early check-in at the hotel."
And those words were music for Joey’s ears.
That day was hell for the girl. The good thing was the band didn’t have anything to do but play the show, which meant: movies with Mikey and Frank, the best way to keep her head busy from thinking the worst.
- "I’m bored"- Frank whispered as he played with Joey’s hair, who was laid next to him.
- "We have to leave for the show in a while"- Mikey whispered, half awake, half asleep.
- "Great"- the girl murmured, eyes glued at the screen- "I’m hungry."
- "You just ate."
- "I’m bored. Boredom makes me hungry."
- "Come on, let’s get something to eat"- Frank grabbed Joey’s hand and stood up- "I need to move from this bed, or I’m gonna die of boredom."
- "Can you bring me some ice cream?"- Mikey asked from the bed as Joey and Frank put on their shoes.
- "Nope, if you want something, you gotta come with us"- the girl smiled at her friend, who didn’t move.
- "Damn it! Fine… I won’t have ice cream."
- "Good for you, see ya!"
Gerard was just done jerking off in his bed. He wasn’t happy about it, but he didn’t have much to do. He had tried to make music, but shit wasn’t working. He had thought about calling his wife, but it was five in the morning in Los Angeles. He was miserable. He wanted to find a way to end his agony. But all he could think about was Joey walking around the bus in her pajamas. Joey sleeping in the back of the bus in those shorts and a tank top. Joey curled on a couch reading Edgar Allan Poe. His cock was killing him, and his hand hadn’t been enough. He wanted her so bad it hurt, and masturbation just wasn’t enough anymore.
He wanted to tell her that he loved her. That he was willing to make her happy. But he knew he couldn’t do either of those things.
- “Come live with me and my wife, ‘cos polygamy ain’t illegal or whatever.”
The singer sighed and looked at the ceiling, toilet paper all over his hand, cleaning the mess he had left.
- "You have issues, dude"- Gerard said out loud and closed his eyes. Honestly, there was nothing he could do but to love the girl from a safe distance and hope for his feelings to fade as soon as the tour was over.
Way didn’t want that tour to end because he didn’t want to be apart from Joey. In fact, Gerard was starting to feel obsessed. He hated it, but still, he didn’t know how to stop.
Frank kept laughing like a kid as he and Joey sat at the hotel’s roof deck. He was drinking a beer and smoking while she finished her second ice cream.
- "Mikey Fucking Way"- she argued, frowning- "Because of him, I can’t stop thinking about getting ice cream."
- "You are so fucking high in sugar"- Frank added and grinned.
- "I know! It’s gonna be hell when I get my sugar hangover."
- "I can kiss your temples if that helps"- he answered and winked at her. The girl smiled and raised an eyebrow.
- "Why are you such a flirt with me, Frank Anthony?"
- "I am not a flirt!"- he answered, nearly insulted, but still chuckled after a few seconds as his friend stared at him right into the eyes.
- "Come on! We’ve been friends for a long while now. You are always such a flirt with me. Are you like this with all the girls?"
- "Define like this"- he answered with a lower voice and made his best to look as hot as fuck.
- "Just what you did, you are adorable and hot and cute and all innocent. Why are you like that?"
- "Why? You don’t like it?"
- "I love it, it’s so fucking funny and cute, like you. But sometimes it makes me wonder if you are like that with all the girls…"
- "Why?"
- "’Cause I know you are just my friend, and you can be as flirty as you want; I know it’s a game. But what if you do this with someone who doesn’t get it as I do… then what?"- Frank stayed quiet, looking at his friend. Then took a long drag from his cigarette.
- "What if I’m just a flirt with you?"
- "I surely doubt it"- Joey quickly answered, laughing- "I’ve seen you flirt with basically 99% of the girls we’ve met this tour. You just don’t notice it."
- "I haven’t!"
- "You do, Frank, that’s why I know you are harmless"- that frustrated the guitarist, though he knew he wasn’t going to get any with her anyway. She was his friend; he loved his wife. He just thought Joey was hot.
- "Tell you what, I like flirting with you ‘cos you are cute, and you don’t get nervous"- Iero simply confessed.
- "Of course, I don’t! You are my friend, and this is like…"
- "The nature of our friendship?"
- "You just read my mind, Jersey"- the two of them stayed quiet and smiled.
- "I would hit on you if I wasn’t married, though"- Joey burst out laughing at those words, but Frank just smiled- "I mean it."
- "I know."
- "If I wasn’t… and I did… do you think I’d stand a chance?"- the girl blushed and finished her ice cream.
- "I’d say you would if Gub wasn’t in the picture, of course. We could have gone out on a couple of dates, have fun."
- "And fuck like bunnies"- Frank added, and Joey hit his arm.
- "Dude, you are my friend. Friends don’t fuck."
- "What? So friends make love? besides, we are talking about an alternative universe that will never happen!"
- "Shut up!! You are gross!!"- Joey covered her face with both hands as she shook her head- "You are so fucking funny Jersey, I’m glad I met you."
- "I’m glad I met you too, Iceland. You should stay forever"- she smiled and nodded.
- "I’m not going anywhere today."
- "I mean, you should sign to be a member of the band, like… one of us."
- "One of the guys?"
- "Yeah"- she smiled and held his hand.
- "You are taking this relationship too fast. We’ve been together a few months. We haven’t even moved in together. I don’t think we are quite there yet."
- "You live on my fucking face, Iceland"- Frank laughed and pushed her- "Which reminds me, you have to do your fucking laundry."
- "Yeah… I swear I’ll do it in Spain, while you do all the press and I have the hotel all by myself."
- "You know, sometimes I hate you for that."
- "For not having to do any interviews?"
- "Yeah… I hate those things."
- "Why? 'cos you have to sit in front of a microphone for hours answering the same fucking questions, over and over again?"- she said, smiling.
- "Fuck you."
- "I’m sorry!!"- she laughed, and he grinned- "I bet press sucks, but it comes hand in hand with being a rockstar."
- "I hate that too"- he said and scratched his head, stubbing his cigar in an ashtray- "I just wanted to make music. I don’t know where everything else came from. Sometimes I wish I could stop it all and go home, be with my babies, with my wife."
Frank suddenly had gotten too serious and too deep, something Joey knew was like the comet Halley: it happened once in a lifetime around her.
- "Why don’t you stop?"- she innocently asked, mostly ‘cos she had thought about stopping herself.
- "I don’t know, it’s like… you somehow got trapped in this machine, and it won’t stop working, and if you take a step back, it all collapses…-" he looked at his hands as he spoke, but Joey held them and smiled.
- "I don’t think anything is gonna collapse if you stop doing tour after tour for a while"- she whispered- "There are more important things in life than concerts, you know."
- "Name one"- he said and looked into her eyes.
- "Your kids"
- "Nailed it"- and Joey burst out laughing- "It was too easy!"
- "Exactly, nothing is more important than the ones we love, so shut the fuck up and man up! ask for a break every once in a while, ‘cos this leg of the tour, I must say, has been misery for all of us."
- "I know!"- Frank gesticulated in the most Jersey Italian way that always made Joey laugh- "It’s been hell!"
- "The only good thing of it all, other than the money, I mean"- she said and chuckled- "It’s the fact I can call you my friend."
- "Awww, Iceland. You could have called me your friend from day one, even when I hated the guts out of you."
- "Why did you hate me, by the way?"
- "‘Cos I wanted to do you so bad I didn’t want you in the band"- Frank simply answered, and the drummer raised an eyebrow.
- "Are you joking?"- by her face, Iero could tell the comment hadn’t been the best he had done.
- "Of course, I am!!"- no, he wasn’t- "I just didn’t want to make a circus out of the fact you are a girl. I knew people would start making up stories, and Jamia would be nervous and jealous because of you… having a woman in the band back then meant a mess I didn’t want to deal with."
- "And why did you change your mind?"
- "Mikey forced me"- Joey nodded, and Frank smiled- "And Jamia was really into you from day one. She loved the idea of adding a girl into the tour ‘cos there weren’t enough women in rock… but mostly ‘cos I told her your boyfriend was the hot guy from Criminal Minds, and I swear, she nearly yelled. She wanted me to friend you so she could meet him."
- "I’m in this band ‘cos your wife thinks my soon to be husband is hot?"- and Frank nodded- "I owe Jamia more than I thought I would. Maybe I can send her a picture of Matthew naked"- Frank raised an eyebrow as Joey smiled- "You know she is gonna love those."
- "But he is so tall… he is gonna make me look bad"- he joked, and Joey laughed like she hadn’t laugh that whole day.
- "Of course, he is. But in your defense… he could make every single fucking man on earth look bad. Have you seen his feet?"
- "Joey!! Shut up!!!"
Matthew woke up on his bed, his head killing him and a complete blur of what his night had been. He just sat and scratched his head.
- “What time is it?... wait, how did I get home?... fuck!! What happened last night?!”
The young actor nearly jumped as he started to recap his birthday party. The cast from the movie had arranged a party in a local bar, he was really happy about it, though he almost declined it. He was tired, but his co-star convinced him it was a great idea to go out, get to know everybody a little better, and start his birthday celebration.
- "Oh fuck"- he grunted- "My fucking head is killing me…"- he reached out for his phone and found it on his nightstand. He had a few unread messages from Joey
- “I love you Akumu!”- he smiled right away- “Remember to leave a bottle of water by your bed to keep you hydrated”- and he had indeed left one there- “Save some birthday belated celebration for my comeback in a few days.”
- "Honey!"- his mother’s voice took him from his head as he looked at his bedroom’s door
- "Mom! What are you doing here?"
- "Happy birthday, honey!!"- he stood up and walked over to hug her immediately.
- "Mom! Thank you so much for coming!"
- "I had to come, I have to give you something"- the actor frowned- "This came into the mail for you a few weeks ago, but I had to wait until today to give it to you"
Mrs. Gubler smiled as she gave her son a box. It was completely hand-drawn with jako lanterns, cute skulls, ghosts, and hearts.
- "What is this?"
- "A present that you got from very far away, or so it seems."
Matthew grabbed the box and sat on his bed to open it. Inside, there was a letter from his fiancé, a couple of gorgeous kimonos, Japanese books, art, a few Halloween shirts, and unmatching socks. Matthew was speechless, staring at the box. It was amazing.
- "I can’t believe this"
- "Joey sent it when she reached London, and we agreed I would bring it to you today."
- "Thank you"- he moved over and gave her a hug.
- "Don’t thank me for coming over on your birthday, honey. I love you, thank the girl at the other side of the world who gathered everything you might love and shipped it to you on your special day"- she kissed his cheeks and stood up-" I’m gonna make you breakfast, and you are gonna take a shower ‘cos you stick, are you still drunk?"
- "No mom"
- "Then call your wife! And thank her for the presents!"
- "Yes, mom!"
Matthew grabbed his phone, smiling, and dialed Joey’s number. It rang once. It rang twice. He was about to give up and try later when the girl picked up and smiled at the other side of the screen.
- "Birthday boy!"
- "Baby! You are amazing!"- he quickly said and laid back on his bed- "I just got my presents."
- "Did your mom give you the box?! did you like it?"
- "Hell yeah! It’s amazing, thank you"
- "Did you like the kimonos?"
- "They are the softest!"
- "I know!! I was in shock! You can hang them in the kimono closet!! So when you get home, you can get naked, grab a kimono and just relax!"
- "Are you gonna be naked under your kimono too?"- the girl giggled nervously.
- "That’s very likely"
- "I like that idea. Where are you?"
- "Backstage warming up, we are playing at eight… did you just wake up?"
- "Yeah…"- he whispered and closed his eyes.
- "You were fucking wasted last night."
- "I thought you didn’t notice"- he answered, chuckling, still feeling uneasy about his wild night out. It felt off. Probably ‘cos he was way too hungover.
- "Matthew Gray Gubler, I’m gonna be your wife. I know when you are drunk, you can’t fool me even if you tried your best"- the actor laughed softly (laughing also hurt) and nodded at Joey- "Wait, the guys wanna say hello."
Matthew saw Mikey, Frank, and Ray appear and waved at the camera.
- "Happy birthday, dude!"- Ray said smiling- "How’s the hangover?"
- "Killing me!"
- "Save some liver for our party, man!"- Mikey said and waved too
- "Hope you have a great day!"- Frank added.
- "Thanks, guys!"- Matthew said and waved, yet his eyes were glued at Joey, who kept looking at him with a warm smile.
- "Where’s Gerard?"- Mikey asked and looked around. Gerard. Gubler frowned immediately. He hated him deeply, and he hated the fact Joey worked with him.
- "He was smoking outside"- Frank answered and waved again at the screen- "See you, Gubler!"
- "Bye guys!"- the band walked away, and Joey was now again all alone- "Hey, gorgeous"
- "Hey, wild party beast. What are you doing for the rest of your birthday?"
- "I’m not leaving this bed"- Joey laughed and looked at him in silence for a couple of minutes.
- "I’m gonna be in that bed with you in twelve days, can you believe that?"
- "I’ve waited so long it seems to be an eternity, but at the same time, it feels like it’s gonna be tomorrow."
- "I know exactly how you feel."
- "Honey! breakfast!"- Matthew’s mother yelled from the kitchen, making the young man laugh.
- "I am ten years old again, or was that just a strong flashback?"
- "Go eat, I’ll play a show, and I’ll call you from the hotel, ok?"- he nodded and smiled.
- "I love you so much, Yami."
- "I love you more, Matthew Gray “birthday boy” Gubler. Talk to you in a couple of hours."
The actor hung down and sighed. He felt happy to know he had her in his life. That she was gonna be his wife. As he thought about it, he started going through some of the pictures from the night before. He remembered half of it, but it felt like he had fun.
- "Fuck!!"- he shouted and wide opened his eyes.
Maybe a little too much fun.
Matthew stared at the screen in shock. There was a picture of him kissing two girls at the same time. Two. Girls. Kissing. Him. At. The. Same. Fucking. Time. And it didn’t help when he noticed, one of those girls was his ex-girlfriend.
- "Shit! Shit! Shit!"- he kept going through the party pictures, shots, laughter, his ex kissing him while they danced. Bunch of people, more people laughing, his ex and her friend kissing him again.
- "Fucking shit! What the fuck did I do?!"
Matthew’s heart was about to come out of his throat as he started deleting every single photo from his phone. Why were those there? Why did he do that? Who saw him? Where were those pictures now?
- "What the fuck did you do, mother fucker?! What else did you do?!"
Matthew couldn’t move. He just sat with the phone in his hands, thinking if he erased those pictures from his phone, it was like it never happened. But now it was in his mind, and he couldn’t stop the memories from coming back.
He was drunk and sad after talking with Joey. He had another shot and decided to go home, but his ex-girlfriend and one of her friends- part of the team of the movie he was filming- appeared and invited him to dance. Drunk Matthew didn’t seem to think it was a bad idea and joined them on the dancefloor. They danced, the girls started kissing. Gubler liked it and didn’t move away when they moved closer to him and started kissing with him too.
- "Oh fuck!!"- he wanted to kill himself.
But that wasn’t all. He wished it was, but it was all coming back now. His ex took him to the backroom.
- "No!"- Matthew yelled, widening his eyes- "No!"- he repeated, as his mother appeared running into his room.
- "Honey! What is it?! What happened?"
- "I fucked it up!"- he simply answered and didn’t move an inch
- "What are you talking about?"
- "Last night at the party… I ran into Annie, and she was with a friend and…"- the actor made a pause and scratched his head aggressively
- "Matthew?"
- "And they kissed me happy birthday…"
- "Matthew?"
- "And then… mom sorry, I can’t tell you this"- the young man tried to stand up, but his mother stopped him.
- "Matthew Gray Gubler, what did you do last night?"
- "I made out with them, and Annie gave me a blowjob"- he covered his face with both hands, embarrassed and regretful. He felt sick, dirty, gross. He felt like an animal, like everything he had always hated, like a man who cheated.
He cheated. And he wasn’t going to be able to undo it or even forget it.
Matthew broke into tears quietly at first, but his sobbing grew bigger, sadder, and more desperate. He hated himself, he needed to find a way to forget about what had happened, but he couldn’t. Instead, the memories kept coming; Annie kneeled in front of him.
- "Mom… I fucked it up."
- "Yes"- she simply replied- "You did, and Joey is gonna find out, no matter if you don’t tell her."
- "How do you know? Maybe no one saw us"- the actor was in denial and desperate to find anything that could keep him from dealing with the truth- I might have just dreamt the whole thing, maybe it never happened
- "Matthew?"
- "Maybe I can forget about it. If I don’t remember it, then it never happened."
- "Matthew"
- "Mom, I can’t tell her!"- he nearly shouted, nervous and grossed out by himself.
- "I didn’t raise a liar or a cheater"- the young man looked at his mother with watered-up eyes.
- "How am I supposed to tell her something like this? she is gonna hate me! She is gonna break up with me, mom. I know her."
- "You have to take responsibility for the things you’ve done, Matthew. You said you wanted to marry her. You can’t start that commitment with a lie."
- "She is gonna hate me… fuck, I hate me…"
- "Well, you brought it to yourself, Matthew Gray, so you have to fix it."
Gubler took a long shower and cried half of it. He couldn’t believe what he had gotten into. Or why. What had gotten into him to get so drunk ‘till the point of letting his ex-girlfriend give him a blow job? That wasn’t him. He remembered he felt bad after talking with Joey. He knew he couldn’t stop thinking she was touring with Gerard and hated him. What if he had tried to make his move on her? What if she fell for him? She wouldn’t. But what if she did? They had been apart for so long. No, he trusted her with his life. She would never do such a thing.
Then why had he done it?
Matthew honestly wanted to kill himself. That’s how guilty he felt. He knew Joey was never going to forgive him, and he was considering not ever telling her. She was never going to find out if he didn’t confess. Maybe he could take it to the grave.
Mikey hugged Joey goodnight and watched her walk to her room. Gerard looked at them from the other side of the hallway. The girl waved at him, and he waved back.
- "Hey! What are you doing?"- Mikey asked his brother as he lazily walked over him, weary after the show.
- "I just wanted to know if you wanna hang out. James and Frank are locked in their rooms already. Maybe we can watch a movie or something. I don’t feel like being on my own for a while"- Mikey nodded at Gerard.
- "Sure, man. Let me take a shower, and I’ll be right there."
Originally, Gerard wanted to drag Joey along with his brother, ‘cos it seemed like the only way to hang out with her. But she had disappeared way too fast to make his move.
The girl took a shower, put on her pajamas, and dialed Matthew’s number. He didn’t reply.
- "Hangover man has to be hanging out with his mom"- the girl thought out loud and grabbed a book to kill time. He was going to call when he was ready to talk.
Was he?
Matthew saw his cell phone right and froze. His hands shook when he reached out to answer, and that’s when he realized he couldn’t. He wasn’t going to be able to lie to her. But he couldn’t tell her either. He was home alone. His mom was out, mainly to give him space to think and talk with Joey in private. But yet, Matthew didn’t know what to do or what to say.
- "Ok, she is the woman you want to spend the rest of your life with, and you are willing to do everything that’s in your power to keep her by your side"- he said and looked at his reflex in the mirror and then washed his face.
- "Akumu!"- Joey smiled as soon as he saw him- "How was breakfast?"
- "Chocolate chips hotcakes with a whipped cream smile on top, and lots of coffee."
- "Spoiled by your mother on your birthday, lucky man"- he smiled and felt a knot in his throat.
- “Fuck! this is going to be so hard!” And how was the show?"
- "It was good, not the finest though… we are all so fucking tired"- the girl laid on her bed and smiled at her boyfriend- "When I get home, I’m not leaving that bed Matthew Gray Gubler, I’m gonna spend every second there... sleeping."
- "I’m not planning on sleeping if you are in this bed"- he answered and felt his voice shake at the end of the sentence, guilt taking over him.
- "You are gonna have to let me sleep at least a day. I’m so fucking tired and jet-lagged all the time. This tour ruined my sleeping schedule"- Joey joked but frowned as she noticed her boyfriend had tears falling from his eyes- "Akumu, what is it? Are you ok? Why are you crying?"
- "‘Cos I miss you"- he simply answered- "I miss you so fucking much! Can we just get married when you get here? I’ll pick you up at the airport, drive us to the nearest church, and we just get married right away"- the girl sighed with watered-up eyes herself as she stared at Gubler sobbing.
- "I miss you too… and I can’t wait to marry you either."
- "Can you promise me you’ll always be with me? No matter what?"
- "Matthew, I swear I’ll always be by your side"- the girl felt broken-hearted by the emotion in her fiancé’s words. She had never seen him so sad before, was it because she wasn’t there on his birthday?- "That is the main reason why I wanna marry you dorky, ‘cos I wanna spend the rest of my life with you, in one eternal Halloween"- Matthew smiled at those words and wiped off his tears.
- "Sorry, I’m just a little emotional… ‘cos I miss you, and I need you here."
- "I’m sorry I couldn’t be there."
- "No, Yami, don’t be sorry. You are working! And you are so awesome and incredible. I swear I don’t deserve you."
Matthew kept trying to stop crying, but it was harder than he thought. He was feeling so guilty, so low, the worst human on earth. And the girl on the other side of the world was just telling him she thought he was the best man amongst them all.
- "Yes, you do! You are an incredible man, hangover boy! I should be the one telling you how amazing you are, it’s your birthday! I want to make you feel happy all the time, please don’t be sad!"
- "I just need to see your face to be happy today"- he answered without hesitation and sighed- "You know what?"
- "What?"
- "I’m gonna tour with you."
- "What?"- Joey frowned and looked at how Matthew sat correctly on his bed and fixed his hair.
- "Yes, I will. I hate this. I hate being apart from you this long. So next couple of months, I’m gonna follow you wherever you go."
- "You’d do that for me?"- the girl widened her eyes
- "Joey, I would do anything for you"- Matthew made sure to pronounce every word as slowly as possible as he looked at her eyes- "So I’ll schedule plane tickets to be with you."
- "And your work?"
- "You are more important than my job. I can’t be like this anymore, we are gonna finish the movie in two weeks, and after that, my only job will be to clap after every song you play"- Joey smiled, feeling her heart swell with love, as a few more tears fell from her eyes.
- "You are making me so happy."
- "My plans for as long as I live exactly."
Mikey and Gerard were laid watching tv. Mikey kept surfing channels while Gerard sipped his diet coke and scrolled down his Twitter timeline. Neither of them felt like talking, pretty much ‘cos they were tired, and after being so many weeks stuck together, there wasn’t much new to say.
- "Weird!"- Mikey chuckled as they caught a Criminal Minds episode and Matthew as Spencer Reid appeared on screen- "I never thought I’d friend this guy."
- "Why did you do that? he is an asshole"- Gerard simply answered and kept his eyes stuck on the phone.
- "He’s not an asshole. He is hilarious. You’d like him if you met him."
- "Not interested"- Mikey frowned and kept surfing channels- "Wow, I thought you were going to watch your boyfriend’s show."
- "Wow, very mature, Gerard."
- "Sorry"- the singer knew he had crossed the line, mostly ‘cos he shouldn’t show how much he hated Matthew because…
- "Why do you hate him so much?"- because Mikey could start asking questions, and he didn’t want to talk.
- "I don’t hate him. He is not my friend, which is very different."
- "And Joey is not your friend either"- Mikey added- "You never talk to her."
- "She never talks to me"- Gerard added, and his voice betrayed him, showing some bitterness in his words.
- "Well, maybe because you didn’t want her in the band."
- "It’s been months. Get over it."
- "Now that I think about it, you are not even close to her at all…"
- "You are way too close to her, close enough for the two of us"- Gerard spit those words, still not looking at his brother.
- "What? Are you jealous or something?"
- "No!"- he snorted- "Why? Should I?"
- "I don’t know. You are being an asshole."
- "I’m just tired…"- Gerard came up with the worst excuse ever
- "Ok, if you are tired, I’ll leave you to sleep, dude, you are not what I call a pleasure to hang out with anyway"- Mikey stood up and walked to the door- "See you tomorrow at the plane."
Mikey left the room, and Gerard groaned, annoyed. He grabbed the remote control and surfed the channels until he found Criminal Minds again. He just wanted to see Matthew’s face to hate him even more.
- "What’s so special about this asshole? He is just a pretty boy, no talent, definitely no acting skills… He is tall. That’s all he has in his favor"- Gerard was arguing with the television out loud.
- "I mean… it’s clear he is not as smart as his character, and he ain’t funny either, shit! I bet he hasn’t done anything but this stupid tv show and those 3 minutes in the Wes Anderson movie."
Gerard opened google and searched for information about Matthew Gray Gubler, just to make sure he was a loser. He hated to know he wasn’t, though Gerard thought everything he had done had been pathetic so far. Everything but proposing Joey. And that was what Gerard hated the most. It was sick, and he knew it, that obsession he had about that girl, the one he couldn’t have. He just couldn’t take the idea of being with her out of his mind. Why? Was it because obviously, she didn’t want him? Many girls hadn’t wanted him before. Why was this one killing him slowly?
- "Oh fuck!"- Gerard nearly shook with his coke when he saw a picture of Matthew’s birthday- "Oh man!! I knew you were too good for my girl!!"- Gerard wanted to jump when he saw a picture of Matthew making out with a girl and the comment: “Matthew Gray Gubler birthday, 2011”.
- "You are going down!!"
::: Munich, March 10th, 2011 :::
Ray and Joey walked out of a Krispy Kremes at the airport, waiting for their flight to Valencia, holding a huge box of freshly made donuts. Joey was in heaven, and Ray was laughing at how excited she was about coffee and sugar.
- "Touring with you and Mikey together has been the best training to be a dad one day"- the guitarist said, chuckling.
- "Are you planning on having babies, dad?"
- "Yeah, it’s something me and Christa have talked about a few times. I want to wait until life gets a little bit less… messy ‘cos I wanna be with her the whole way and enjoy our babies."
- "Oh, dad, you are so cute"- the girl pout and punched his arm- "I want babies too, but I don’t think it will happen soon."
- "Why?"
- "Well, ‘cos I guess I want to wait until I have a steady job first."
- "And what is this for you?"- Toro gesticulated.
- "I’m your drummer for the tour Ray. The tour will end at some point, though it seems endless right now, and I will have to look for another job. And what if I get another tour drummer job? I’m gonna have to travel again. When am I going to be home with my husband to make and raise a baby?"
- "Well… after the tour you could be our studio drummer too, and you can stay in Los Angeles with Matthew and start making babies"- the girl chuckled at those words, though she liked the idea- "You should name your firstborn Ray though, I’ll put that in the contract"- both of them laughed and reached their gate.
- "Kids! Sugar!"- Joey’s smile shone as she gave Frank and Mikey the donuts box.
Gerard looked at her and sighed, thinking he wanted to tell her what he knew about Matthew, but it hurt him to know how much damage it was going to mean for her
- "Hey, Gerard!"- she snapped her fingers in front of him- "This one has your name on it. I figured you’d like a cappuccino cream donut."
- "Thank you"- he felt his cheeks blushing as he held the donut and smiled at Joey- "Sugar low?"
- "Yeah, my body needs some fuel to work until we reach the next hotel, and I can sleep some more."
- "Why? You didn’t sleep well last night?"- Gerard bit his donut and stared at Joey’s cheek turning red.
- "No, I stayed up talking with Matthew until three am."
- "Wow… really? Everything ok?"- Gerard’s heart beat a little faster with those words. She wouldn’t be so happy if she knew what Gubler was doing behind her back. Or did she not care? No, it was more likely she had no idea.
- "Yeah, we just miss each other a lot, and it was his birthday. I wanted to spend as much time with him as possible, even on FaceTime."
- "His birthday!"- Gerard nodded- "Right, so he didn’t party or whatever?“Smooth dude, good”
- "He did, the night before with some friends from work, he was kind of hungover"- Joey smiled again- "So last night was our moment to celebrate."
- "Dude, please. I don’t wanna picture you and Matthew having phone sex"- Frankie showed up and grabbed Joey’s coffee- "I mean, you, that I can imagine, but him… not so much."
- "Jersey!!"- the girl frowned and smacked him.
- "What?!"
- "Stop being disgusting!"- he chuckled, and she took her coffee back from his hands
- "We all knew what you meant when you said you “stayed up talking with Matthew until three am”- Iero air quoted and laughed again- "We’ve all been there, I’ve been there like three times in the latest weeks."
- "Come on!!!"- Joey smacked him again and walked away. Frank kept laughing for a few seconds and finished his donut.
- "Hey guys, come closer"- Gerard whispered as he noticed Joey had walked away, probably to the bathroom- "I need to tell you something."
- "What?"- Mikey raised an eyebrow as he moved closer ‘cos his brother had whispered.
- "Last night, I was on Twitter, and this picture of Gubler appeared… he… he cheated on Joey at his birthday party."
Gerard had prepared the speech to make sure no one would ever know he had been looking for information about Gubler and saved the picture as proof.
- "What the fuck?"- Mikey grabbed the phone from his brother’s hand and took a look at the picture.
- "Are you sure that’s him?"- Ray moved closer and took a long look at the picture.
- "Yeah! It’s him! He cheated on the party Joey told us he had with his friends"- Mikey was in shock. He walked away and closed his eyes, thinking about Joey and how she would take the news. Frank was so mad. He wanted to kill that guy. He also walked away and murmured curses for a minute straight. Ray couldn’t believe it, and his only concern at the moment was:
- "We have to tell her"
- "How can we tell her that?!"- Mikey pointed at the phone- "We are gonna break her!"
- "He broke her!"- Gerard argued- "He is the one who fucked it up! We are her friends, and we have to let her know what’s going on"- the band stayed quiet, neither of them knowing what to say.
- "Hey kids!"- Joey appeared suddenly smiling- "Why did you all get all serious? Did something happen?"
- "Yeah"- Gerard said, and Frank quickly interrupted him.
- "I ate the last donut and didn’t share it"- the girl raised an eyebrow.
- "Bullshit."
- "No, Gerard wanted it, and it seems I tend to hoard all the sweets…"- Joey frowned at that nonsense.
- "You do"- Mikey supported his lie flawlessly- "You always eat more than us!"
- "Ok… sure…"- Joey walked to a chair and looked at her phone. Mikey turned to his brother and punched his arm.
- "Not here! Don’t be an asshole! We wait until we are in the hotel! You can’t do this in public!"- Gerard felt like an ass. His brother was right. He was so desperate to end that relationship he wasn’t thinking straight.
He wanted to end a relationship that wasn’t even his. What had he turned into? A cold-blooded asshole who craved a girl so much, he was willing to ruin her life to get a chance to be with her?
Mikey was playing with his fingers nonstop. He just wanted to get out of the plane and avoid Joey for a long while. He was thankful the girl was sound asleep next to him ‘cos he knew he wouldn’t be able to pretend things were cool and peachy. Mikey knew he was a lousy liar. He wasn’t going to act like everything was good.
- "Hey"- Frank waved and pointed to the back of the plane. Mikey stood up and followed him, there Ray and Gerard were waiting for them.
- "What is it?"
- "We have to talk about what happened. When are we going to tell her?"- Gerard said, and the four of them looked at each other in silence for a few seconds- "I know it’s crap, but we can’t leave her in the dark about it… can we?"
- "No man"- Frank said and took a look around, scared the girl might see or hear them- "But… she is gonna be a mess, and I don’t wanna feel like we did this to her."
- "He did this to her"- Gerard quickly replied- "This whole shit is his fault."
- "Gubler should tell her"- Iero added. He didn’t feel like he could do such harm to her friend. He was going to harm Gubler, but not Joey.
- "He won’t do that, Frank"- Ray said- "But… I don’t want to be a cold bitch here, but we’ve got the Valencia show in two days, and that shit will be televised… if we tell her… and she wants to leave…"
- "Dude, we can’t wait that long"- Gerard interrupted him.
- "Why not?"- Ray asked, and Way didn’t reply. His honest answer was: “Because I wanna hold her tight and tell her “everything is gonna be ok” as soon as possible. And I also want to ruin Matthew’s life in the shortest notice”.
- "Because if she finds out that we knew and we didn’t tell her, we are gonna pay. She is gonna think we betrayed her"- Mikey answered instead of Gerard, ‘cos he had a reasonable answer.
- "You are right"- Ray nodded- "And that would be hell"- the four of them nodded.
- "So? Tonight?"- Frank asked- "We should get her something…"
- "Like what? Flowers?"- Gerard asked, confused.
- "Like alcohol, chocolate, chick flicks"- Mikey frowned at his brother- "So you never helped a friend when her boyfriend dumped her?"- and Gerard stayed still- "Wow, you can’t cease to amaze me."
- "I didn’t have many girlfriends back in the days"- Gerard explained.
- "Whatever…"
- "Ok, so after dinner, we go to her room"- Frank finished, and they all accepted- "Ok, now let me go to the bathroom ‘cos I need to take a piss, come on, move it."
Ray looked around his room and sighed. He had called Christa and told her what was going on. He felt responsible for Joey’s wellbeing, and at that moment, he was scared of what would happen. His wife was in shock. She couldn’t believe Matthew had done such a thing. She even doubted it was real.
- "Are you sure that the picture isn’t photoshopped?"
- "Yeah!"
- "Really?"- Ray doubted
- "Well, it looked very real to me"
- "Why don’t you ask him?"
- "Yes, honey! He is going to come clean right away!"
- "I mean it, baby! Maybe it wasn’t a party, maybe it was a scene from his coming up film out of context, maybe it was a bad angle."
- "Christa, the tongue of two women were liking him at the very same time unless he is doing porn, there is no way that’s from his upcoming movie!"- Ray made a point, and his wife’s silence made it clear. Now he was walking in circles, trying to set his mind straight. He had never done this before, and shit, he didn’t want to.
The guitarist grabbed the Pride and Prejudice blu ray he had gotten that afternoon and sighed. It was time. He walked out to the hall and into the elevator. Just outside of Joey’s room, he bumped into Mikey and Frank. One held a paper bag with some chocolates and candies, and the other, a whiskey bottle. Of course, the whiskey guy was Iero.
- "Should we wait for Gerard?"- Ray asked
- "Nah"- Frank knocked and waited- "He is always late."
- "And you are always so on time"- Mikey joked and chuckled.
- "Hey! Ready for that movie?"- Joey opened the door smiling- "Say hello to Matthew!!"- the girl flipped her phone, and her boyfriend waved at the band.
- "Hey guys"- but neither of them smiled at him.
- "We are gonna watch a movie"- Joey turned and walked back- "I’ll call you in a while, ok?"
- "Sure, Yami. I love you so much!"
- "I love you more!"
- "Have fun"- Joey hung down and looked at her friends, narrowing her eyes, upset- "What the fuck is your problem?"
- "Bug, we need to talk"- the knock on the door interrupted Mikey, but Frank walked over quickly and opened it.
- "We are starting. What did you bring?"- Gerard frowns at that questions
- "You weren’t kidding? We had to bring something? Like a birthday party?"
- "Shit, you are an asshole"- Frank just shook his head.
- "Mikey, Ray? What is it?"- the girl sat on her bed, leg crossed, as Mikey sat next to her and held her hand.
- "Turns out we’ve got some news for you."
- "Am I fired?"- she wide opened her eyes in shock- "I am, right? Fuck I knew this was gonna happen eventually."
- "No, Bug, you are not fired"- Ray sat next to Mikey and smiled- "We are more than happy to have you here, and we would love to have you with us forever."
- "Yeah, Iceland, you are one of us now. Deal with the fact you are doomed"- Frank said and moved closer to the girl to mess with her hair.
- "Then?"- she asked and looked at the four worried faces in front of her- "What is it? ‘Cos it seems serious."
None of them knew how to say it, though each of them had practiced it in front of the mirror. And Gerard, the one who was anxious to say it, suddenly felt the remorse of being the one to break it on Joey’s face. He knew it had to happen, though. That didn’t make it less sad.
- "Joey, last night I found this picture of Gubler’s birthday party on Twitter"- the singer simply said and gave her his phone.
Mikey closed his eyes, and Frank looked down. Neither of them was able to face the girl at the moment. Joey just stared at the screen in silence for at least a minute, holding her breath. There he was, Matthew. Cheating. What she thought was impossible happened. And the most profound pain she could feel took over her body second by second.
Her world fell down. She couldn’t believe it. Matthew was kissing his ex-girlfriend. She recognized her right away, the other girl, she had no idea who she was.
He betrayed her trust. He destroyed her heart, she could feel it breaking inside her chest, with deep aching pain, and it didn’t let her breathe. She wanted everybody out of the room to cry alone. She wanted to smash Gerard’s phone against the wall. And most of all, she wanted to find an explanation, maybe an excuse for that fucking image. It was to be a lie. Matthew would never do that. Never. Thoughts kept rolling down her head. It was a lie. It had to be. Maybe a fan photoshopped it. Perhaps it was old. Maybe it wasn’t Gubs, just a lookalike.
- "Joey…"- Mikey whispered- "Are you ok?"
- "Is that the only picture you saw?"- the girl asked with a cold tone in her voice.
- "No"- Gerard murmured and frowned as he noticed the lack of emotion in Joey’s face
- "Can you send me the pictures, please?"- her voice was turning shaky while she made an effort to stay calm.
Joey hated to cry, and overall, she hated to cry in front of people. She hated when people pitied her, and at the moment, it was all she was feeling coming from her friends. Pity.
-  "Bug, it is ok to be sad"- Mikey said and held her hand tight.
- "I’m not sad, I’m mad"- her eyes were filled with tears she refused to cry. Her jaws felt tight. She didn’t even want to talk anymore.
- "Hey, we are here- Ray kneeled in front of Joey and tucked away some of her hair that was falling on her face. He kept his brown eyes in hers, locked, trying to read her reaction. He realized how much she was trying to hold back. He knew his friend pretty well, and he could tell how embarrassed she was to share this with everybody. So he whispered:
- "Joey, do you want to be alone for a little while?"- and she quickly nodded, biting the inside of her cheeks.
- "Dude, we can’t leave her alone!"- Gerard immediately said and hit his friend’s arm. But Ray didn’t leave Joey’s eyes, not even for a second, and she did the same.
- "No, she is going to be ok, we are going to leave her alone for a while, and I am going to take her key, is that ok, Joey?"- the girl nodded again- "Ok, so I’ll take your key. I’ll come back in an hour to see if you need anything, ok?"
Joey couldn’t even say a word, so she nodded one last time and looked at Ray stand up.
- "Dude? What the fuck?"- Gerard was in shock, but Mikey understood immediately what Ray was doing.
- "I love you"- the youngest Way whispered and kissed Joey’s cheek. She got even tenser at his touch. She felt she was going to break into tears if anyone else touched her. So she refused to hug anybody.
- "Bug, if you need a drink, I left your favorite whiskey on the table… I’ll stop by later to have a shot with you, ok?"- Frank whispered and cut her a short smile. She nodded and watched them walk away. Gerard didn’t want to move, he took a few steps closer and opened his arms, but Joey quickly moved from him and frowned, like a frightened cat trying to escape from everything and everybody.
- "Gerard, leave her, she is ok"- Ray grabbed Gerard’s arm and pushed him- "I’ll come back in an hour, Bug"- the girl watched them walking to the door, Gerard kept looking back at her, concerned and scared she wasn’t going to be ok on her own.
- "Dude, this is wrong"- he argued the second they closed the door- "We can’t leave her there! It’s not safe!"- and just then, Joey’s yells crying froze the four of them- "Give me the key!"- Gerard argued and tried to take it from Ray’s pocket.
- "No! She needs to be on her own! She needs to cry, and she is never going to cry in front of us!"
- "What the fuck do you know?"- the singer questioned obfuscated.
- "Calm down, Gee. Ray is right"- Mikey said and sighed- "Joey needs to be alone, she ain’t going to kill herself, she just needs to yell and cry, and probably call that mother fucker and break up with him."
- "Yeah, come on"- Frank tapped on Gerard’s back and started walking- "Let’s get a beer, smoke a cigarette, and we can come back in a while. Ray has the key, so we know she won’t lock herself alone."
Gerard hated his friends at that moment. He had to be there for her, hold her, kiss her, console her. What the fuck was he doing with those guys? She needed him. He had to be with her. Why were they doing this?
- "So you don’t care?"- Gerard squabbled, and Mikey simply sighed.
- "You don’t know how she is like…"- and his brother’s words were enough to insult Gerard and shut him up.
Joey was on her knees on the floor, crying. Gasping for air every few seconds and feeling how every tear in her body came out at the same time. There was a void in her chest, right where it used to be her heart. Matthew Gray Gubler broke her heart. He broke her. All the fears she had locked inside ‘cos Matthew made her trust were now out again, and a voice in the back of her head kept telling her, “You knew this was going to happen if you were stupid enough to trust someone.”
But he was so good for her. How could he do that? Was it something she had done? Was it because she wasn’t there? You can’t be stuck with somebody to keep them from cheating. You don’t cheat. If you are not happy, you break up.
Joey felt sick in her stomach and had to rush to the bathroom. She puked crying, she couldn’t stop doing either of them. She kept choking with tears as she vomited. Until it was done. She flushed and stayed there, on the bathroom floor, crying and shaking in sadness. In fear. In disappointment.
What was she going to do? She had to break up with him. She couldn’t marry a cheater, and she wasn’t going to trust him ever again. Two fucking girls at the same time. What if he had done it before and got caught just now? For how long had he been doing that? What if she was seeing other girls regularly?
- "I knew this was going to happen. You don’t date a guy like that and expect him to be faithful…"- the girl whispered to herself, weeping- "He had nothing to do with a girl like me. Take a look at yourself, you dumb slut!"
Joey never said it out loud. She never let herself think about it. She refused to accept the fact she was weak. She had always hated herself. She felt she wasn’t worthy of anything good. All the years in the orphanage had left more than scars on her skin. They were also in her mind. You don’t spend years watching kids leaving with families and don’t convince yourself you are not good enough to be picked, to be happy. And when a family picks you up, you think it’s not you. It’s pity.
Sure, you can cover it up. You can be serious. You can stay away emotionally from people. You can find shelter in music and hide from the world in it. You can kick people’s ass when they hurt you or insult you. You can lie and say you are not “a people person,” whatever that means. But none of that can erase the fact that you feel alone, unwanted. Worthless.
- "I wanna call this mother fucker and fucking yell at him the kind of scumbag he is!!"- Frank said as he lit another cigarette and took a look at his watch- "She has been alone for half an hour, do you think she is ok?"
- "Of course, she is not ok, but she has to handle it. She is a grown woman"- Ray answered and sipped his beer.
- "I can’t believe he did this to her"- Mikey whispered- "She, of all the women I’ve known, doesn’t deserve to be treated like this."
A few tears filled his eyes, and he quickly wiped them off, lighting a cigarette too.
- "I’m gonna kill him, as soon as we get home, I’m gonna kill this mother fucker. I’ve got his fucking address, I’m gonna get there, and fucking break every bone in his body with my own hands"- Mikey was losing his cool. He stood up and walked around the hotel’s terrace, and looked at the city lighten in front of him. Frank stared at his friends and stood up too.
- "I’m with you, but we can’t be like this in front of her."
- "I know"- Mikey scratched his head and smoked in silence for a few seconds- "I’m not doing press tomorrow,"- he announced- "I’m staying with her all day long."
- "You can’t just…"- but Gerard’s words were lost in the air knowing his brother wasn’t asking, he was letting them know what he was doing.
- "Maybe we could take turns"- Frankie thought out loud- "You stay with her in the morning, Ray stays with her after lunch, and so on"- they all nodded. Gerard felt excited there was a chance he was going to get time alone with her.
- "Let’s see if she approves it first"- Ray said, and Mikey smiled for a second. He could picture Joey arguing she was ok, and him simply just staying with her, not taking no for an answer. She was going to be pissed.
- "Can we please check on her?"- Gerard tried to ask, but in real life, it sounded like he was begging- "I’m worried"- Ray sighed and took a look at his clock
- "Thirty more minutes"
- "Why at the hour?"- the eldest Way questioned
- "‘Cos she has to put her shit together before we come back, and she knows we’ll come back in an hour."
Joey walked around her room, holding a glass of whiskey. Her third glass of whiskey. Her phone was in her hand, and her finger was about to push “dial.”
- "You can do this"- she said to herself. She had cleaned her face, wiped off all the tears, combed her hair, and taken a long time calming herself down. More than anything, she didn’t want Matthew to see her cry. She couldn’t show any weakness to him.
She knew she would never be fully ready to do this, but if not now, when? So she dialed.
- "Hey Yami!! How’s the movie? Is it over yet?"- Matthew’s face filled the screen, and Joey needed a few seconds to put herself together again. His face was too much to handle. She still loved him too much to see him after what had just happened. Maybe FaceTime hadn’t been the best idea.
- "You cheated on me"- she managed to say. Matthew’s heart stopped- "It’s all over Twitter!!! You fucking cheated on me, and you just pretended it was all perfect??!"
Gubler sat on his couch and looked at his mom, who was next to him, reading. She slowly stood up and walked to the other room. He kept his eyes on Joey’s face and held his breath. Why did he think he could hide it from her? Now, what was he going to say? Was he going to deny it? Could he?
- "Yami, I..."
- "Don’t fucking Yami me, Matt"- she spit the last word with disdain, ‘cos she knew how much he hated being called that way- "You lied, you cheated, and you ruined everything!"
- "Joey, please, listen to me"- the young man stood up and started walking around the room, not knowing what to do or what to say.
- "What should I listen to? Do you think you can talk your way out of this?"- Matthew brushed his hand on his face and scratched his hair, confused and scared.
- "Joey, listen, I was drunk. It didn’t mean anything."
- "What? So being drunk is the perfect excuse for me to accept the fact your ex-girlfriend’s tongue was down your throat, and with another girl too? What the fuck?!"
- "Joey, it didn’t mean anything! It was a mistake!"
- "A “mistake”? How many “mistakes” have you made ever since I left? Tell me."
- "Please, Joey, listen to me. I was drunk, they started dancing, and they kissed me and…"
- "And you fucking took them home and fucked the two of them at the fucking same time. I can picture that very clear, the same fucking bed you said you wanted me to be in."
- "Joey! No!! That’s not what happened!"
- "Then enlighten me, Matthew. Tell me, what the fuck happened?"
Gubler sighed and bit his lips. He didn’t want to tell her, but he knew he had to. She was going to find out the truth one way or another. Maybe if he came clean with her, she would understand. He loved her. She knew that. It was a mistake, a horrible mistake, but it didn’t mean a thing, anything at all.
- "We were at the party, and you called… we talked, and I decided to go home."
- "Sure"- she interrupted sarcastically.
- "Listen, I wanted to go home ‘cos I missed you, but Mark found me and got me a couple of drinks. I was super drunk already when Ann appeared."
- "So you had invited her?"
- "No! No way! I had no idea she was there!"
- "But you got thrilled to see her."
- "I didn’t care! Joey, please, believe me. I was just drunk and stupid, but it didn’t mean a thing!"
- "You fucked her!!"
- "I didn’t fuck neither of them!"
- "There are pictures!! Pictures of you and her and… you were leaving together"
- "We didn’t fuck! Joey, I swear!!"
- "Sorry, but I can’t believe you! I can’t believe a word that’s coming from your lips!"
- "Joey, Yami, baby, love… I swear, I didn’t fuck with them"
- "Then what happened?"
Joey was severe and cold. She had managed not to cry so far, and that made her feel proud. She was devastated and nearly suicidal inside, but she wasn’t going to give Matthew the pleasure of seeing her destroyed because of him. Not that day.
- "Joey… nothing happened."
- "Matthew, if you are going to lie, and I discover that you did…"
- "Ann took me to the back room and decided she wanted to give me a birthday present, so she..." - Joey closed her eyes and threw the phone to the bed.
- "Hijo de la gran puta!! (son of a bitch!!)"- she managed to yell, losing it for a second.
- "It was just a blowjob. Nothing else happened, I swear, Joey! and I stopped her!"- Matthew broke in tears as Joey walked around the room, poured herself another whiskey, and looked at the phone still on her bed.
- "Just a blowjob??! Just a blowjob, Matthew?? Do you fucking believe that shit??"
- "Joey, it meant nothing!!! I didn’t want to do it!!"
- "Bullshit!!"- Joey grabbed the phone again and cut him a look so full of hate Matthew knew he was losing her second by second.
- "Yami, please, I hate myself too, and there’s nothing I wouldn’t give to undo this!! I was too drunk! I thought it was you, and when I saw her, I stopped it"- Joey scoffed and bit her lips to stop the tears- "I regret everything that happened, it was stupid, and it meant nothing, I fucking love you, Joey, you are my bride! you are my love and my whole life!"
- "No"- she quickly replied.
- "Joey, please."
- "No, Matthew. I am not your bride, and I am not your life, not anymore. I am merely the girl you fucking broke and lied to."
- "Please, please try to understand, it wasn’t me, it was a mistake! I didn’t mean it!!"
- "But it happened, Matthew, and that’s it. You can’t undo it."
- "Please, please! you have to forgive me."
- "Why should I forgive you, Matthew? ‘Cos I love you? Is that enough?"- the girl stopped talking, ‘cos her eyes were filled with tears, and she was still making her best not to cry in front of him. But it was getting too hard. Nearly impossible.
- "Joey, please don’t leave me"- the boy begged, his voice as a whisper at the other side of the line. He was crying like a baby, sobbing and walking around his house, not knowing what to do- "Yami, I need you"- every word that came from his lips cracked each of her already shattered heart into another tiny piece.
- "You should have thought of that before, shouldn’t you?"- the girl answered coldly- "You know how much it took me to trust you, Matthew, how much it took me to give you my heart, to you, for the very fucking first time in my life."
- "Please, please… give me another chance…"- he was sobbing, and Joey couldn’t hold it anymore. She broke into tears in front of him as well.
He looked at her, still thinking there was a chance she could forgive him. He didn’t mean to hurt her. It was a mistake. He loved her. She knew it. What did he have to do to change her mind? To keep her by his side.
- "No"- Joey answered, whimpering- "There are no second chances, Matthew."
- "Please, Joey, I am so so so sorry!"
- "Being sorry doesn’t fix anything."
- "I love you"
- "You didn’t care about that when she sucked your dick, did you?"- Joey managed to say, drying the tears from her eyes- "You just fucking enjoyed it, and fucked with my feelings, ‘cos I wasn’t supposed to know."
- "I love you so much"
- "So what?"- she simply answered- "So I should forgive you ‘cos you love me?"
- "I’d do anything for you."
- "You should have started by not cheating."
Joey took a deep breath and looked at Gubler sobbing at the other side of the line, desperate, honestly desperate
- "Bye, Matthew."
- "No, Joey! Wait! Don’t!"
But that was all Joey could handle. She threw the phone back to her bed and fell on the floor, crying her eyes out again. It was too much for her; she wasn’t going to make this alive. Joey loved him so much, but Matthew had damaged her to the edge of sanity. She was proud she had managed the situation mostly cold-headed. She wanted him. She wanted to forgive him so badly. But she couldn’t. She wasn’t going to believe him ever again.
- "Bug?"- Ray opened the door and found her lying on the bed. Mikey ran to her and held her. She wasn’t crying anymore. She looked in shock. He almost broke into tears next to her, not knowing what to do. She merely blinked. She wasn’t talking. She just laid there, curl up, almost lifeless. Barely alive.
Mikey hugged her tight, lying next to her, trying to keep her warm, ‘cos she kept shaking. Frank wiped off the tears from his eyes as he turned around and poured himself a whiskey.
Gerard looked at the scene from a safe distance while Ray tried to talk to Joey, and Frank started drinking, trying not to show how insanely angry he was. Gerard felt like shit. He didn’t think it would affect him so much. But suddenly, he was feeling guilty. Honestly and deeply guilty. He was the one who found out. He was the one who was eager to tell her. He was the one who told her. And an hour ago, he was excited about it, ‘cos it meant she wasn’t going to be with Matthew anymore. But he was so selfish he never stopped himself from thinking what was going to happen to her. How it was going to affect her. And Gerard felt now like a monster.
- "I’m ok kids"- Joey whispered and cut Ray a slight smile- "I’m just tired."
- "Do you want something to eat?"- he asked, but she shook her head- "I’m gonna leave these chocolates here, ok?"
- "Thank you…"- Mikey kissed the top of her head and snuggled her closer. Her phone kept ringing on the floor. Frank quickly grabbed it. It already had five missing calls from Matthew.
- "This mother fucker is gonna…"
- "Please don’t"- but Joey’s words were useless, Frank picked up, ignoring her.
- "Joey!"- Gubler yelled at the other side of the line.
- "Don’t you fucking dare calling her again!!"- Frank yelled with hate- "You are not getting close to her. You are not talking to her. You are dead! Heard me? You are dead to her, and if you fucking get close to her, I am gonna fucking kill you, heard me? I’m gonna kill you!!"
Frank didn’t even let him reply. He hung down and turned off the phone.
- "Why did you do that?"- Joey whispered and took a deep breath.
- "I’m not gonna let that guy hurt you again"- Frank murmured as he kneeled by the bed and kissed her temple sweetly- "Never, I’m not gonna let him make you cry or break your heart again, ok?"
Frank’s words were so full of honesty and emotion, even his voice shook. Tears fell from his eyes, and Joey stared at him in shock. He cared that much for her. It was shocking to realize how much they all cared for her.
- "Thank you, Frank"- he smiled
- "Hey, whatever you need"- he smiled shyly- "Now make room"- the girl and Mikey moved, as Frank crawled on the bed next to her. He wrapped an arm around her and kissed the top of her head as Mikey laid at the other side of her, still cuddling her.
Gerard stared at the scene and wondered how they could just do that, it was what he wanted to do, but he could not move from where he was standing.
- "Wanna watch a movie?"- Ray grabbed the remote control- "Let’s see what we can find"- he knew Pride and Prejudice wasn’t right for the moment, so he tried to find the most random movie he could in pay per view. Die Hard was the chosen one. He and Gerard laid on the bed with the others and didn’t say another word. The girl wanted to be alone, but she knew they weren’t going to let her. It felt good in a way, knowing they cared about her and wanted to be with her at that dark moment.
Matthew was crying, sitting on his bed. He didn’t seem to be able to stop the tears from falling. He held the phone and dialed over and over again. It was off. The wedding was off. His whole life was off at that point. He had made the biggest mistake, and now he knew he couldn’t fix it. But he had to. He wanted to.
- "Yami, please, I’m so sorry"- he talked with her voicemail- "I need you to forgive me, I didn’t mean it, I didn’t want to, it was a mistake"- the call ended, he dialed again- "Yami, I can’t live without you, I can’t, I swear, please, I’m so sorry, I’d do anything you want, anything, but please, please"- the call ended, he dialed again- "Please… Joey, I love you so much, I need you so much, I..."
- "Honey"- his mother whispered as she walked into his room and found him weeping on the phone.
- "She left me, mom"- he whispered and felt her arms around him- "She broke up with me"- he couldn’t say another word ‘cos the tears, and the sobbing didn’t let him talk. His mother kissed his temple and hugged him tightly.
- "You are gonna fix this, baby. It’s gonna be ok."
- "How?"- he managed to murmur.
- "She loves you so much, she is going to forgive you. I know she will."
- "I hurt her mom. She doesn’t deserve this... I don’t deserve her… she is an angel, and I ruined it"- Matthew couldn’t say another word. He just hid his head on his mother’s neck and cried.

"Doppelganger" *Part 1*
Tumblr media
**Note** Thank you to @chasingeverybreakingwave for this amazing cover!
Alright so I don't know if you've been following the slight drama of today, but I had an idea to make a sequel to "Black Magic", involving a "version" of Raul Esparza. But I got an anon that said the idea sounded icky, since it's basically RFP. But I thought in my heart the way I wrote it he wasn't really the ACTUAL Raul Esparza, I changed attributes him and what not-- anyway, long story short they still thought it was icky and since NOBODY ELSE would answer me, I decided that losing readers over an idea I had wasn't worth it.
SO that brings us here: Still a sequel to "Black Magic", BUT the doppelganger is... Nevada Ramirez! [From Trouble In The Heights]
Tumblr media
Premise: Nevada's thugs see you and Rafael get engaged in the park and send a picture to Nevada, who realizes they have the exact same face. To which he immediately decides he is going to use for his full advantage....And that includes getting you.
Ah?? Ahhhh??? Do you love it? Do you hate it?
WELL I wrote a prototype chapter, and I like it. SO I'm putting it out to you. I hope the anon sees this, LOOK WHAT I DID FOR YOU ANON. Lulz.
IF you haven't read "Black Magic" I don't suppose it will TOTALLY ruin the story for you, but it would really be better if you read it first. Which you can, right HERE!
If you haven't seen "Trouble In The Heights", all you need to know is that Nevada Ramirez is a very, very evil man. Also so fucking sexy holy shit. Really that's it. You're caught up.
NOTE/WARNING/DISCLAIMER: This story contains situations/mentions of abuse, and sexual assault. Read at your own discretion.
PART 2
Alright here we go!

------------------------------
You were walking towards the exit of Central Park hand in hand with your now fiancée, totally oblivious to the world around you. All that mattered was you and him, you had worked so hard and been through so much, you just wanted a night to yourself. Chloe and Maria had run off, you had thanked the Charmed sisters and Harry, and now you and Rafael were so engrossed with each other, you didn’t notice a few rough looking men hanging around the fountain that you came from.
“Ay, isn’t this food from “Comida de Los Dioses?” One of them asked the other two while they picked up and dug through the food you had ditched when Rafael started his “musical number”.
“Si, I’d know those frijoles anywhere, the old woman knows how to pound ‘em,” One of the other two high fived the other one with a smirk for the double entendre.
“Who out here in the clase alta would know about food from el barrio?”
“Santa mierda, mira por allí!” One of them hit the other two, pointing to you and Rafael canoodling like teenagers.
“¿Qué diablos?” Another one stared in shock. “Nevada wouldn’t--”
The third one pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
“Nevada? Donde estas?”
The other two glanced at you, then back to the one on the phone anxiously as he continued to speak to someone on the phone.
“There’s a vato here in Central Park, y juro he looks like your clone,” After a second he hit one of the other ones. “Ay he says send him a picture,”
He pulled out his phone and discreetly snapped a photo of you and Rafael kissing in the moonlight and texted it to the person on the phone.
After about a minute, the one on the phone was nodding along with the conversation of the other person.
“Mmmhmm…Yeah his little puta is pretty cute, No voy a mentir,” He chuckled, nodding at you while licking his lips.
“‘Vada says we need to find out who that pendejo is,” The man instructed the other two as he hung up with “Vada”.
“Ay, let’s have some fun then boys,” Another one cracked his knuckles with an evil smile.
-----
You had almost made it to the edge of the park when Rafael noticed the three cholo’s trailing you, mischief in their eyes. He walked faster, putting a protective arm around you.
“Baby, wha-- what’s wrong?” You gave him a concerned look as you saw him checking behind the two of you nervously.
“Don’t panic Y/N, but I think those three cholo’s are trailing us,” He whispered to you.
“Oh god,” You glanced back at them. They were walking faster, and their smiles grew more evil.
“Hey!” One of them called as they caught up to you, the one speaking stood in front of you. “Where are you going so fast, ese? On such a pretty night?”
“With such a pretty lady…” Another one licked his lips as he eyed you up and down.
Rafael instantly stood in front of you, his eyes narrowed. “No sabes con quién estás tratando, idiota.” He growled.
“Ohhhhh, vato’s got some spirit in him, doesn’t he?”
“Hey he’s the fucking ADA of New York asshole, he’ll have you in jail so fast--” You tried standing up to him, but all three of them started laughing hysterically.
“Baby just let me do the talking, okay?” He whispered angrily.
“The ADA, eh?” One of them gave the other two a knowing smile. They knew Nevada could definitely use that to his advantage.
“Yeah, and I also used to fight with the Diablo’s, pendejo,” Rafael growled, making them laugh even harder.
“Did you now?” One of them laughed. “You think the Diablo’s mean shit to guys like us?”
“Guys like you?” Rafael raised an eyebrow at them.
“Let me guess, you grew up in el barrio--what, South Bronx?” The same man turned his head to one side, trying to size Rafael up.
“By St. Mary’s,” He nodded.
“Ooooh, big boy,” He said mockingly while the other laughed.
“I bet you never dared to go to the Heights, eh ese?” The words falling out of one of the man’s mouths made Rafael’s eyes flicker with fear. That was making you even more nervous.
“We need to go. Now,” He whispered to you sternly.
“Don’t worry, abogado, we don’t want to hurt you or your pequeña dama,” One nodded at you.
“What do you want?” Rafael growled.
“We just wanted your name, ese,” One answered.
“....And why do you want that?” He glared at the man.
“Ah, well it’s always good to know the constituents of our fine city, don’t you agree Rico?” He nodded to one of the others.
“Big word for a cholo,” Rafael smirked; causing one of the others came from behind and popped him over the head.
“Rafa!!” You screeched and grabbed his head, trying to assess the damage. He winced in pain as the three cholos laughed cruelly.
“Didn't they teach you manners in your fancy lawyer school, abogado?” One of them sneered.
“Rafa, Felix. Didn’t you hear the puta?” Rico pointed at you.
“DON’T call her that,” Rafael growled harder, his fists tightened.
“Just tell us your name, and you can run on home and play house with your little chiquita,”
“His name is Rafael Barba, okay? Can we please go--” You pleaded with them.
“Y/N,” Rafael looked at you with shock and betrayal in his eyes as the three cholos laughed in amusement.
“Ah, gracias mi reina,” Felix bowed to you overdramatically as the other two nodded and ran off into the darkness.
Rafael threw his hands over his head, then turned to you with fire in his eyes. “WHY would you do that?!”
“Wha-- They were going to hurt us!” You looked at him in disbelief.
“They weren’t going to do anything, Y/N,” He barked. “They’re not stupid,”
“Well, I mean they seemed pretty--” You half laughed, trying to make light of the situation but Rafael was not having it.
“This isn’t funny, Y/N!” He continued to yell at you. It felt a lot like when he was under Olivia’s voodoo, but this was all him. And you didn’t like it.
“What the hell, Rafa? Why are you being like this?” You asked him with hurt in your eyes.
“Those guys are from The Heights,” He sighed, still running his hands nervously through his hair.
“The Heights?” You looked at him curiously.
“Washington Heights?”
“I don’t…” You shook your head. You were from a small town in Jersey, you were hardly schooled in every neighborhood in the City.
“Look it’s like-- if you were scared of the place I took you to meet Maria at, you’d be ten times more nervous in The Heights. As you should be,” He explained.
“So it’s just a bad neighborhood?”
“It’s more than that, carino!” He threw his hands up in frustration.. “It’s like...a lawless country over there. Actually it’s worse than lawless, their law is criminal law,”
“What does that mean?”
“It’s run by a drug kingpin, Nevada Ramirez,” He explained. “Some slick, super smart, super elusive prick. Nobody’s ever seen him face to face, not anyone I know of anyway. He always has his cabrones out doing his dirty work.”
“So why were they all the way out here…?” You looked at him in confusion.
“I don’t know!” He yelled.
“Well why did that want your name--”
“I don’t know!!” He yelled again. “But I damn sure wasn’t going to just GIVE it to them,”
“Well I’m sorry I just--” You kept trying to talk but Rafael was in his own world.
“What would Nevada want with me? I don’t bother him, I’m not even looking for him!” He paced back and forth.
“...Do you think he’s going to come after you?” You asked softly, making him stop pacing and look at you.
“I’m not worried about me, mi vida,” He took your face in his hands. “Don’t you get it? I’m scared they’re going to come after you,”
“Me? What would they want with me? I’m not even a lawyer!” You laughed like it was the craziest idea in the world.
“It just-- It doesn’t make sense,” He began to pace again but you stopped him.
“Look, Rafa--” You took his hands. “Maybe...maybe they were just bored, maybe they wanted to know where you got that suit!”
“....I still don’t like it,” He looked off in the direction the cholos had run. “I’m putting a security detail on you,”
“Wha-- Rafael come on,” You rolled your eyes. “How am I supposed to go to class with some big bodyguard dude following me around? Do you want me to get shunned?!”
“I don’t care!” He put both of his hands on your shoulders. “Either you let me get you a bodyguard, or you’re staying by my side 24/7,”
“Oh my god-- Okay DAD,” You scoffed, but the horrified look on Rafael’s face made you realize the significant age gap between the two of you may have not made for the ideal ‘dad’ insult.
“I mean-- Oh you know what I meant,” You looked at him apologetically. “Rafael please, I can take care of myself,”
“I just-- I don’t want to lose you, mi amor,” He pressed his forehead against yours. “I just got you back,”
“I know baby, but look-- now you’ll have me for the rest of our lives!” You held up your engagement ring donning your hand with a huge smile.
“Right, right,” He shook his head with a smile. “We were in the middle of celebrating that, were we not?”
“We were,” You nodded happily as he took your hand in his again. He still eyed the streets warily as he helped you into the town car that was going to take you somewhere to celebrate.
------
Meanwhile
“Rafael Antonio Barba,” Nevada Ramirez read on his phone. “The Assistant District Attorney of New York City,”
“Dios mio Vada--” A busty, barely dressed woman hanging on his lap gasped as she too saw the screen. “That vato has your face!”
“That he does, amante,” He smirked, now looking at the photo Felix had sent him of the two of you.
“And we are going to take full advantage of that,”

Eight Years, Old Man.
Final Part of the Friendly Conversations between Hudson and "Unknown".
It was December 14th when Jason Hudson promised agent Perez that they will still have their weekly meeting. It's Christmas Eve, and Perez hasn't heard of the older man until the supposedly cheery day.
Self Insert and Jason Hudson
I looked around the busy office, a heavy weight on my shoulders as worry ate my gut alive. It has been a few days over a week and Jason Hudson hasn't contacted me nor answer my calls. He wasn't around the office, but he never really was around, always on a mission or supervising agents on a mission. Our conversations were always on time, never one of us missing the date for eight years straight. The worry was because Hudson was deployed on a mission with Frank Woods, their lead in cartel boss and terrorist Raul Menendez making a helpful turn. I asked his superior about the status of Hudson but was given a shake of a head and "We have no intel on Hudson." I didn't believe the guy but the absolute emotion in his usual cold stone eyes made me doubtful.
"Hey Perez, doing anything tonight?" I looked over at a friend of mine, Becky, and forced a smile.
"Probably call my ma and watch some stupid Christmas movie." I say quietly, noticing the others packing up to leave for the day. Becky nodded in understanding, her face contorting to one of concern.
"Has there been any update on Mr. Hudson?" She asked, drumming her fingers against the folder she was holding onto. I shook my head and her shoulder slouched forward, a tired sigh escaping her lips. "Mrs. Hudson has been dropping by frequently, asking about the boys. I hope they're alright..."
I stared at the folders scattered on my desk and frowned, running a shaky hand through my hair. Alex Mason. Frank Woods. Jason Hudson. These three boys I have been keeping records of, knew their backstory well enough I may as well be their mother. These boys I knew and cared about, and this one mission can be their victory. Perhaps Mason would go back to Alaska and see his son. Hudson would go home to Jenny and they'll both hug each other tightly and cry. Woods would probably go to Alaska with Mason, as the two are in a relationship. They can raise David together.
"Well I'll be going now. Take care, Perez." Becky walked away and I was left with my intruding thoughts, although when am I not alone with my thoughts. Grabbing the phone on my desk, I dialed my mother's number and brought the big device to my ear, smiling when her voice sounded through.
"Hey ma, how are you doing?"
"Oh baby, it's been so long! I'm doing fine, thanks for asking. Your siblings are being little rascals, even your brother. Oh his girlfriend is such a kind girl! How are you?"
I smiled, wishing I was there to see my little brother with his girlfriend, who was pregnant and expecting a boy. "I'm fine, ma."
"Now baby, you don't sound fine. What's wrong?"
Ah, nothing ever passes by my mom and I'm grateful for that, although it can be quite annoying. "Y'know Hudson? Yeah, well he went on a mission about four to five days ago and I haven't received a report on his wellbeing, or the other two he was with."
"Oh don't worry honey, I'm sure he's alright. With the way you talk about them in your letters and rare calls, I know they are strong and brave and nothing will ever bring them down. Just like you."
"Thanks ma, I really needed-" I froze when I saw Hudson's superior walk over to me, his eyes casted down. "Hold on one second, ma." I placed down the phone and stood up, nodding at the older man who just shook his head.
"I...I got the reports back..." he trailed off and my heart stopped. "He's confirmed KIA-"
No.
No. No no. No. No
"Shut the fuck up! He's not dead!" I turned away, begging the rising tears to stay, but they began rolling down my cheeks and I shook my head as he continued. "Frank Woods is injured, but he's going to make it. Alex Mason is said to be KIA but they didn't find his body, they're saying the target presumably killed Mason elsewhere. Mason's son, David, was kidnapped by the target but he's safe. I, I know-"
I cut him off with a loud wail, falling to my knees, accidentally swiping the files of them off my desk. He couldn't be dead. He has two kids, and Jenny. And Mason, no Mason isn't dead either. He has David and Woods and even Bell! They're lying.
"Tell me the fucking truth!" I screamed, furiously wiping my tears away but they kept falling. I've never lost my cool before, and I shouldn't because my friends aren't dead.
"Perez, this is hard, I know. But Hudson is KIA."
My mom's voice was distant telling me to calm down and for a minute I forgot I had her on the line. But this couldn't be true. He promised me he would be there to talk to me. He promised.
I didn't go home that night.
I was the one to break the news to Jenny, who openly sobbed into my arms as I held her upright. Her kids knew what happened by the state their usually composed mother was in and cried in each other's arms. I visited Woods and David at the hospital and the usual cool and funny man was empty. He was paralyzed, Menendez shot him in the knees and completely shattered his knee caps. He was also stabbed close to his spine, and according to Bell and the doctors, the knife got his nerve system. David was also empty, refusing to eat and demanding to know the status of his father. Bell was the one to break it to him and she let him cry in her arms, tears of her own escaping like a waterfall. Her husband, Russell Adler, held them both and the doctors let us all stay with Woods and David, even after visiting hours.
We all attended Hudson and Mason's funerals. I broke down at the sight of Hudson's coffin and the memorial, because it only proved that he was gone. I was sick to my stomach during Mason's memorial, because that man deserved anything but death. He had been through so much and he deserved to retire and live a long and healthy life with his son and Woods. I was doubtful about Mason's detahz as they never found his body, but after years without any reports, I slowly gave up whatever dimmer of hope I had left.
I was given a letter during Hudson's memorial. It was from him, turns out, he had notes already written to every close person to him and I was one of them. I read it once everyone left, crying and laughing at his ridiculous dad jokes. He apologized for breaking his promise, and that he has the final reports I can record. I rested my hand on his tombstone when I opened the other piece of paper, with the information of the mission and the chaos Mason and Woods made and just every little detail was the same as if we were talking. Turning my head to the concrete, I caressed it with a sad smile.
"Thank you for being there, old man. Like the father I never had. I'll see you next week...don't be late." Although Hudson was gone, I never stopped our meetings. I had a feeling he was there every week, by my side and listening as I rambled on and on. This operation was never over, and now I realized it. The final piece of a chapter that would never be laid to rest, because we are always there.
