Wei Wuxian wore black and red as a Jiang disciple

Rating: FANON – NEUTRAL

Almost all the visual adaptations and official art for Mo Dao Zu Shi depict Wei Wuxian in black and red clothing during his days as a Jiang disciple, despite the other disciples wearing sect colors. However, this design choice is not canon to the novel, as the color of his robes during this time period is never stated.

In all the flashbacks to Wei Wuxian as a Jiang disciple, the only time the color of Wei Wuxian's clothing is mentioned is in the Xuanwu's cave:

The inner robe was his undergarment, which wouldn't normally have been appropriate for Lan Wangji to wear, but his outer robe was filthy. ... Wei Wuxian tossed the dry white inner robe to him and draped the outer robe around himself before silently making himself scarce to give Lan Wangji space. (Seven Seas Ch. 11, p. 64)

Wei Wuxian has canonically worn a white inner robe at least once. However, the color of his outer robes are never stated until after Lotus Pier is sacked and Wei Wuxian returns from the Burial Mounds for the first time, at which point he is "dressed entirely in black" (Seven Seas Ch. 13, p. 179).

Personally, the emphasis placed on how much black Wei Wuxian wears after the Burial Mounds implies to me that it is a brand-new fashion choice. In my opinion, as the head disciple of the Jiangs, Wei Wuxian was much more likely to have worn the sect's official color:

Jiang Cheng had yet to reply when a man clad in the Jiang Clan's purple came rushing out of the woods. "Sect Leader!" (Seven Seas Ch. 3, p. 80)

Notably, even in the scenes before his official separation from the Jiangs where he does wear black, Wei Wuxian does not appear to wear red either, except for one "accessory":

He saw himself, dressed all in black, standing with his hands clasped behind his back. A black flute with a bright red tassel hung at his waist. (Seven Seas Ch. 10, p. 310)

This prompts the question of why exactly the visual adaptations and fanart depict Wei Wuxian in so much red. My guess is that the red from Chenqing's tassel was used as an accent color in order to make Wei Wuxian's design distinctive, but I don't know for sure.

In conclusion, it is impossible to say what color Wei Wuxian's clothing was when he was a Jiang disciple, as it is never mentioned in the novel. The color of his clothing is left to the audience's own interpretation.

Neuvillette- 5’11”

A head’s difference is nothing, he’s used to looking at Melusines

Plus he’s almost 6 foot

He has to look down at most people

I feel like, as a dragon, he’s a bit protective of everyone smaller than him

Just in a pack kind of way where he’s looking out for the young/weak

Not to mention to him you are young, assuming you’re mortal

Not a very physically affectionate person, so doesn’t do things like use you as a chin rest

Does, however, enjoy you tucking into his side

He is starved for touch and affection, simple physicality makes him happy

I also feel like he tries to make himself smaller outside of court

Assure him you like his height and remind him to straighten up

Oo, leans down to listen to you! Tap his shoulder and he’ll lean close so you can whisper in his ear

Surprise him by jumping/getting on your toes/climbing up to kiss him and he will short circuit

Quickly starts keeping things you need on lower shelves, again he shares an office with Melusines he’s used to it

Overall, the height difference isn’t a big deal to him

Diluc- 5’10”

Also just shy of 6 foot, but most people in Mondstadt are tall and children avoid him

So he’s not really used to looking down (Jean wears heels and is 5’6”, he doesn’t have to look down much)

Likes the domesticity of seeing you in his clothes, no matter how they fit

Maybe sleeves are too long, or your torso is short and shirts fit you like dresses

Affection doesn’t come naturally to him, but once he warms up to it he will rest his chin on your head

Between his height and strength picking you up is easy and he surprises himself with how much he likes it

Keeps finding excuses to do it, like helping you over a puddle or down the steps

More than happy to lean down for whatever reason, be it so you can feed him something or whisper something

His favorite reason is surprise kisses though, but his all time favorite surprise kisses are when you yank him by the lapels of his jacket

If you live together he will try and keep your things on slightly lower shelves, but also you aren’t usually getting things the maids are

Overall, enjoys the height difference

Al Haitham- 5’11”

Once more, almost 6 foot

He, however, does not like looking down at people because it hurts his neck

Regularly complain about this to you

I’m torn between him teasing you and not wanting to put the effort in to that

I think if you start bickering, your height is on the table for teasing

Like if you’re ignoring each other, he’ll walk into you and claim he “couldn’t see you down there”

However, if you live together or even if you just stay over frequently, will leave things on lower shelves and gets a step stool

Leans on you saying he’s tired

Spends most of his time sitting/lounging so I don’t think his height is really a big deal

Definitely makes you work for his affection though, you will need to pull up a stool/kick him in the knees to get kisses

Can also easily pick you up if he thinks you’re taking too long to get somewhere

Overall, notices the height difference but doesn’t really comment on it

Xiao- 5’2”

Isn’t used to looking down at people who aren’t children

Seriously, very rarely does he meet people shorter than him

However, that doesn’t mean he’s super excited you’re shorter than him, he’s kind of indifferent

He will happily get things for you that you can’t reach though

Like Neuvillette, he likes to make himself seem smaller

Though in his case it’s for comfort, he likes curling into you once you get to that point

Also starved for touch and affection, but also traumatized from losing all his friends

So curling into you gives him all kinds of assurance

When you wave for him to bend down, it sometimes takes him a minute

Already short circuits with affection, but your head naturally resting on his shoulder during hugs really breaks him

You just fit together so well

He has a stool so he can reach high shelves, so when he forgets to leave your stuff on lower shelves it’s not too big a deal

Overall, give him a bit to get used to being the tall one but otherwise indifferent

Ganyu- 5’1”

Her heels probably have her standing at about 5’2”

So she’s used to looking up at people, most of the adepti are really tall and even Keqing is slightly taller than her

Definitely likes being able to let you hide behind her, she likes protecting you

Like Xiao, she isn’t used to being the tall one, but she gets really flustered and apologetic when you ask her to leave things on lower shelves

Pretend like you what to whisper something and kiss her when she leans down

She’ll get flustered then ask “what did you want to tell me?”

Being able to pick you up makes her feel extra strong, so sometimes if you want to get something high up she’ll just lift you

Look, we know she’s strong but we all played her character quest

Also likes when you lay on her/she’s the big spoon

I feel like being one of the shortest adepti weighs on her, so she totally understands if you’re self-conscious about your height

But she loves you, doesn’t matter if you’re shorter or taller than her

Also, she may be taller than you but if you kabedon/ flirt with her with any level of confidence she will shrink in on herself in embarrassment

Overall, loves the height difference 

Layla- 5’2”

Like Xiao and Ganyu, a little shorter than the world average so she kind of has to look up at most people

Not significantly, but she’s not used to looking down

She also doesn’t talk to people often, and when she does she’s sitting

In fact she’ll probably be seated for most of your conversations, so stand over her and fluster her

Will lean into you while you walk

Has also fallen asleep with her chin on your head or leaning over so her chin is on your shoulder

The sudden weight has probably nearly toppled you a few times

Likes to lay on you, her head on your chest

I feel like she naturally curls in on herself a lot, just from exhaustion and maybe a bit of self-consciousness

Would love to let you lean on her but she’s not sure she could keep you up right

Keeps things on low shelves anyways, sometimes standing on a stool seems like a really bad idea

Overall, the height difference doesn’t really affect your relationship

Lumine- 5’2”

Look, Aether is 2 inches taller, she never heard the end of it once she stopped growing

Another member of the, pretty much everyone is taller than me club

Her heels add maybe a half inch, they look pretty small

Loves being the taller one

Need help getting something from the top shelf? She’s on it, even if she has to get a stool

You asked her to get it, she knows you could use the stool but you’ve already asked her

Can’t see something? Want to get on her shoulders? Up you go

Likes being the big spoon/letting you lay on her because she’s terrified you’ll disappear

Seriously, she’s lost so many people on her journey so far

Uses you as an arm/head rest when you’re standing around

Will make lighthearted remarks about your height if you don’t mind

Stuff like “I could probably sneak you in in my bag”, usually it’s stuff Aether has said to her at some point

I was thinking about the language barrier's reader a bit and thought that the inclusion of certain types of jewelry on reader looked odd to Hylians was really neat! So I looked around to see what types of jewelry Hylians could wear and the most I see them wearing are gold necklaces, bracelets, and the occasional jewel earring. Which isn't a very diverse jewelry set, but it is interesting. It got me thinking if the reader wears more gothic or alternative types of jewelry like studded rhinestone belts or spiky chained collars or even an industrial piercing on one if their ears. It can also add to the group's suspicions since they're timelines are a lot more fantastical and dark/gothic elements are more see of as apart of the evil side. They could've thought that reader was a spy or smthn! Thoughts?

Times have changed, therefore, shouldn’t the people have changed as well? Apparently not so for those that reside within the nearby village, only being some miles away from where that small and cozy cottage of (Y/N)’s was located within the surrounding forest. It seemed that after all these years of assisting the villagers with various tasks and activities, some as simple as enchanting some plants to grow more quickly to some as extraneous as bringing someone back to health from the brink of death, none of that mattered. How there had been plenty of opportunities for the Witch to essentially take advantage and cause havoc amongst the villagers, but yet had not, and assisted in what they thought was good for everyone. Despite the good deeds, (Y/N) was well aware that there were still suspicions from the village elders about their intentions. 

Typical elder type of mindset, or at least, (Y/N) had thought that the suspicions were only amongst the elders. 

The thick, choking black smoke could be seen billowing from the treetops of the forest from some miles away from the general location of where the village and (Y/N)’s was at. At first, they hadn’t really thought anything about it. There were some individuals within the village that were known of being “fire starters”, or possibly it was that the village was having some sort of celebration or feast that required a lot of wood burning. Yet, as (Y/N) continues to approach the location of their beloved cottage, it seems to dawn on them that the location of the fire is indeed not coming from the village, but from their cottage itself! Considering that they essentially were carrying a sack from their most recent travels, it takes some minutes to finally make it back. 

Upon reaching the crumbling, burning cottage the elders of the village have formed a semicircle around the cottage, the rest of the townsfolk gathered around behind them, some holding lit torches. While there might have been some villagers that had objected or even refused to participate in burning (Y/N)’s cottage down, (Y/N) viewing each and every one of them as guilty of the crime. Them just standing there watching, watching as (Y/N)’s home and the place where they had their life’s work was now destroyed, left to scatter in the wind as ashes. 

“After everything I have done for not only those of you individually, but as a village as a whole, this is how the lot of you proceed to show your appreciation and thanks?!” There’s an obvious combination of rage, betrayal, and devastation within their tone of voice, alongside the features of hands being clenched into fists, eyebrows are furrowed, and there’s a frown upon their lips. “This is an act of treachery!”

“You’re quite mistaken,” Though their attention seems to be more diverted towards the more prominent danger at hand, the elders are completely aware of the angered Witch standing some feet away. It’s the high elder of the village that begins to speak in response to the displeased Witch. “We are simply cleaning this village from the dangerous, immoral establishment and influence that you have bestowed.” It might’ve been just the anger clouding her mind or the trick of the light as the flames continue to burn, (Y/N) swears that they could see a smirk upon the high elder’s lips. 

“..Remember this, and remember this quite well then..” 

A momentary pause, a moment to briefly recollect thoughts to prevent oneself from outbursting and bringing the whole village to its knees.

At least, not yet. 

“I will be back to exact my revenge!”

Some might address to the Witch that the way they are attempting to handle the situation of the village’s betrayal was simply as “being petty” or even be described as “being melodramatic”. Yet, (Y/N) didn’t necessarily care about others' opinions on their situation and how they were going to handle it. All that mattered to them was that they were so close to completing the final steps before launching their assault. It hadn’t taken long to come across a cave that was mostly hidden by the dense forest surrounding it, which made a comfortable and suitable home for the time being. It was enough to offer a temporary place to work to figure out the best means of attack, but also to house not only the Witch, but the brute of the underworldly being that they had summoned to assist them as well. 

 “I have listened to your story, your tragedy, Witch,” He speaks, his voice deep and gravely, glowing yellow eyes seemingly piercing into the soul of the Witch upon their knees in front of him, the Butcher only slightly amused that someone such as the Witch themself would have summoned him for such purposes, but it hadn’t been the first time. “While I am intrigued, you have yet to offer anything in exchange for my temporary loyalty for you and your objective.” There happens to be a moment of silence that begins to settle within the environment as the Witch begins to think. It had been true, never the doubt, they had presented their story to the Butcher, asking for his assistance, but hadn’t necessarily offered anything in return. The Butcher was definitely not a being to do such a task without payment of course.

“As for payment.. I will offer the souls of all of the villagers.. Child, Adult, Elderly.. I will then allow you to take my soul as well, and then I will be of your servitude for the remainder of time.” 

Will it be unpleasant to essentially be a slave to the Butcher for the remainder of their existence? Who knows? Maybe he will be somewhat generous to the Witch due to their offer of a bundle of souls to torture or feast upon. The thoughts were floating amongst (Y/N)’s mind, their gaze slowly moving from the alchemy table in front of them to the Butcher who sat there silently staring into the flames of the small campfire, all while (Y/N)’s hands were still working with the ingredients of the current potion. How could he just sit there and stare into the fire the whole time? Wasn’t he unamused about it? Bored of just sitting there and waiting? Eventually they return their attention back to the potion at hand, though an eyebrow raises at the color of the potion itself, it being something similar to a fuchsia pink. Definitely not the color of the strength potion that the Witch thought it would’ve been, but they simply shrug their shoulders and then begin to drink the potion, not stopping until it was completely gone. 

Throughout the time to allow the potion to course throughout their system to test the full effect, the Witch decides to complete some tasks within the cave, mostly tidying up things and then prepping some meals. Eventually there happens to be a moment that (Y/N) finds themself standing still, trying to decipher the strange, stirring feeling within them. It’s then that they begin addressing the symptoms that begin becoming more apparent within them. How the Witch had come to realize that their body temperature was increasing significantly, followed by the increasing pace of their heartbeat and breathing, certain body parts becoming more sensitive than typically normal and other parts becoming sensitive when they typically weren’t. 

Slowly, but surely, the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together, and there’s a loud audible gasp that escapes past their lips, scurrying throughout the cave to make their way back to their workbench. Eyes frantically moving across the ingredients that had been used for the potion, and then eventually stopping and staring whenever (Y/N) comes across that specific one. 

Rose petals. 

A strong ingredient it is, and when handled or portioned incorrectly it can lead to some dire consequences. 

The flustered blush that covered their face was  now descending down their neck as they came to realize their mistake. It wasn’t a super strength potion that they had made, but in fact it had been an aphrodisiac. One of the most dangerous potions of all time if not handled carefully, such as this moment right now. Knowing their mistake it’s now that they have to suffer the consequences, but was there actually anything that could resolve this increasing, almost agonizing arousal that was continuously building up within them? Fingers would be like just trying to ignore an internal itch, and attempting to use inanimate objects with the assistance of magic would just cause their energy to deplete significantly, and (Y/N) would probably still be as horny as ever. Yet, that would leave one other option.. 

“Butcher,” While (Y/N)’s voice might have been firm for the most part, there was that noticeable wavering to it, watching as the Butcher’s gaze had finally turned away from the flickering flames of the fire and over the the with, letting out a snort of sorts. “I’m in need of some.. assistance.. Dire assistance, if I must state.” What the Witch hadn’t expected was for the Butcher to hobble himself to be standing, making his way over towards the large, makeshift bed of his that had been made of various furs. While raising an eyebrow in slight confusion, the Butcher proceeds to speak before (Y/N) could question his action. “I had been wondering how long it was going to take you to notice that you had messed up, now get over here so we can get through this.” 

He had been watching them make this potion the entire time? If that was the case then why didn’t he say something beforehand? Why did he wait until after- (Y/N)’s thoughts are interrupted by an impatient grunt from the Butcher once again, which causes (Y/N) to hastily make way over to his bed, watching as he plops himself down and pats his lap. There’s some slight grimace from the remaining gunk upon his apron, but the need to be satisfied comes at a much higher regard at the moment. Legs now being spread across his lap, there’s a soft sigh of relief as the Butcher moves the robes to the side and ripped away their underwear, a few of his fingers beginning the job by teasingly brush against (Y/N)’s skin and then slowly dipping them inside, causing (Y/N) to whine out. A slow and steady pace at first, the Butcher is smarter than any other that would just go all the way, a rough and manhandling pace.

Time definitely becomes a blur, moreso becomes something that’s forgotten, as the pleasure slowly but surely takes over the Witch’s mind. How long had it been since the Butcher had first slipped a finger inside of them? Who cares? All that mattered at that moment was how full they were feeling as one finger had now turned into three, proceeding to stretch out the Witch’s clenching hole, the fluids from previous, intense orgasms now coating their thighs, the Butcher’s fingers and his apron as well. Another one begins to creep up on them as that internal coiling sensation begins to tighten, body trembling tremendously while bucking their hips to chase that euphoric high until it comes crashing down upon the Witch. Wen Ning fits Jiang Cheng's list of requirements for a wife

Rating: FANON – NEUTRAL

A lot of ships involving Jiang Cheng will use a list detailing the characteristics of his ideal woman as evidence for one pairing for another, and the character brought to me to evaluate as a suitable match was Wen Ning. Unfortunately, I have to rate this as fanon because Jiang Cheng's wife requirements... aren't canon to the novels.

In terms of the official adaptations, Jiang Cheng's requirements for his perfect wife seem to be Untamed-only canon, as part of the Jiang Cheng/Wen Qing subplot the drama invented. However, the MDZS Fandom Wiki (which, side note, is a horrible source for anything) credits the following list of requirements to a since-deleted Tumblr post:

Naturally beautiful, graceful and obedient, hard-working and thrifty, coming from a respected family, cultivation level not too high, personality not too strong, not too talkative, voice not too loud and must treat Jin Ling nicely. (source)

Using the Wayback Machine, I managed to find the original Tumblr post in question (seen here). According to the user who posted it, this is a translated excerpt from a Weibo post written by MXTX herself, listing 10 supplemental facts about the books – supposedly posted a year before The Untamed was first announced.

I do not have Weibo and cannot verify this claim, but regardless, I do not consider "word of God" to be canon for the purposes of this blog. Whatever MXTX's intentions were when writing this list, Jiang Cheng's requirements are not mentioned anywhere in the actual text, and so I cannot rate this suggestion as anything but fanon. You, the reader, are free to choose whether you think MXTX's supplemental material is canon-accurate.

As for Wen Ning himself: Canonically, Jiang Cheng "could never tolerate" him (Seven Seas Ch. 19, p. 251), and so unfortunately this ship cannot officially sail. Even if Wen Ning does fit every entry on this list, Jiang Cheng would not consider him a prospective match. I do not consider the list canon, and so any attempts to figure out if Wen Ning fits the letter of the list (if not the spirit) can not be anything but subjective.

But, well, this post is about the list itself, not Jiang Cheng's feelings about it. So while I'm here, I might as well have some fun with it.... Feel free to use the notes to debate whether or not you think Wen Ning is secretly right for Jiang Cheng's dubiously-canon standards.

Naturally beautiful: Wen Ning is ADORABLE and I LOVE HIM. You can't look at him and NOT call him cute; even Wei Wuxian thinks his "side profile [is] delicate and refined" (Seven Seas Ch. 12, p. 141). Would Jiang Cheng think this? Um,

Graceful and obedient: He's pretty meek and he's described as a yes-man (Seven Seas Ch. 16, p. 22), and he does what Wei Wuxian says a lot (under magical flute coercion or otherwise), but he can be pretty stubborn when he wants to be. I wouldn't call him falling off a roof "graceful," but I suppose that was after he was zombified.

Hard-working and thrifty: Yes – I can't imagine he got all those Wen subordinates by being completely lazy. And if anything he's kind of the pack horse for the Burial Mounds crew lol.

Coming from a respected family: Technically? Yes. The Wens have historically been a powerful and influential family, and Wen Ning is the younger brother of someone of "a rank on par with Wen Chao" (Seven Seas Ch. 12, p. 148). Functionally? Uhhhh

Cultivation level not too high: This one is debatable, but probably a yes. We don't receive much information about Wen Ning's cultivation level, since his fighting prowess isn't really plot-relevant until he dies, but he is described as "unremarkable" in comparison to Wen Qing. Just like, in general, I guess. (Seven Seas Ch. 12, p. 149)

Personality not too strong: See #2. I would say yes with some caveats. Especially (and ironically) when Jiang Cheng is involved.

Not too talkative/voice not too loud: Also a match! Wen Ning stutters a lot and doesn't really raise his voice unless he's angry, so he's pretty quiet. Remember that time he and wangxian were on that boat and Wei Wuxian straight up didn't notice him for like five minutes? Poor guy. Can you believe this happened to him twice.

Must treat Jin Ling nicely: Do we count murdering his dad? Because if we don't, then Wen Ning treats Jin Ling very nicely. He even saves his life multiple times!

The reason for these headcanons, one of her teapot voice lines is her offering to teach you how to dance

She definitely forgets to instruct you at first, she just starts leading you in a dance as she hums a tune

If you have some dancing experience, that probably won’t be a problem, if you’ve never danced before…

She definitely takes it slow, she’s just been dancing for so long she forgets to explain

She will step on your toes just as much as you’ll step on her’s because of this

She will twirl you to teach you how to twirl her, once you’ve got that down she won’t twirl you anymore

She will also throw herself into a dip, if you let her drop she will pout and sulk

The best fix for this is to pull her up and into another waltz with a twirl

Once you’ve learned how to dance she expects you to lead, even if she initiates

Loves big dances, both in number of attendees and flourish of the dance

Overall 8/10 teacher and 10/10 dance partner

Ganyu

She can definitely dance, Cloud Retainer taught her, she just doesn’t dance often

Teaching wise I think she’s a great instructor, at least verbally

In the beginning she gets so fixed on explaining and watching your movements that she trips up

Please reassure her that you’re following okay, she’s not used to being in charge

You’ll definitely learn faster with her then Furina because in teaching you she’s also reminding herself

She won’t teach you anything fancy, but if you go and learn a twirl or dip she will break

You will have to initiate any dances, unless someone has told her she should dance in which case she will ask you

Also preference dancing alone and not in a large group, sweep her away to a balcony during a Qixing event and you can dance all you’d like

Preferes swaying to music over an actual waltz

In the end, 8/10 instructor and 10/10 dance partner

Dainsleif

He can dance, he was the captain of a royal guard, but it has been awhile

Seriously, you’re basically learning together

You also definitely have to ask him to teach you, Furina and Ganyu might offer but Dain won’t

Once you start dancing muscle memory kicks in and it sort of ends up like Furina teaching you

He can’t really explain what to do, so he kind of just drags you with him

By the time he figures out how to explain you’re halfway to figuring it out yourself

If he’s teaching you to dance before the fall of Khaenri’ah disregard everything before this, he is the best teacher on this list

Prior to the fall he will always initiate dances, if he’s attending and event and not on duty, after the fall you’ll have to initiate and he’ll be a bit reluctant

Chances are you aren’t at a formal event, so he sees no point in dancing, so if you want to dance you have to ask

Before the fall it is a point of honor to ask you to dance

Will always lead, another silly point of honor

Before the fall, 10s across the board, after the fall, 4/10 teacher and 9/10 dance partner

Zhongli

Can dance, not very fluidly and it is definitely a rusty skill now but he can

During his prime he was a good teacher, just a little stiff

Now he’s kind of like Dain, the muscle memory is there but very rusty

He will, however, ask Madam Ping to re-teach him how to dance so that he can teach you

So, you might step on each other's feet a few times but he will actually teach you

He prefers to initiate dances, like Dain it’s a point of pride, but he’s always happy when you do too

Will lead or follow your lead

Hu Tao has, on occasion, meddled to get him to ask you to dance

Like Ganyu he doesn’t really like big sweeping dances, he prefers being able to sway together to the music

Definitely a 9/10 teacher and partner only because he’s a bit stiff

Traveler

They can dance, definitely, they’re usually eachother’s partner

They’re also definitely smooth, you cannot convince me they wouldn't start stomping wars when they stepped on eachother’s feet

Both twins will ask you to dance, and if they ask you to dance they’ll lead– unless you ask to lead

I mentioned the twins are usually each others partner, it worked the same way between them– Lumine has been smacked in the face by Aether’s braid while twirling him and they’ve both definitely dropped each other in a dip on purpose

The twins don’t mind waltzes that travel, but they aren’t big fans of partner swapping dances

Aether likes dipping his partner, and Lumine likes twirling hers, but they both like being twirled

Sharing a rating, the twins are 10/10 teachers and 10/10 partners

All this talk of HOTD convinced me to finally watch the show, so I put on the first episode. Fifteen minutes in, I had flashbacks of all the violence and mistreatment of women that went on in GOT, and I had to pause because, damn, does it get intense very very soon. I haven’t watched anything intense in a while, so steeling my heart and taking a couple of breaths before diving back in. Wish me luck.

Yeah it's a very graphic show. Like the books, it's trying to explore the way that classic "medieval fantasy" would realistically operate and, for HOTD in particular, how women would fit into that picture. If that's not your usual palate in terms of media, I can see how it might not be for you! I'm a sucker for thick worldbuilding and a low magic system, and even by its own standards I do think the writing is a cut above what you get on most "prestige" TV. But it's probably the most violent show on mainstream TV since AGOT/TWD.
