fanfic writers who write for rare pair ships are treasures and I hope they all know about the impact they have on fandoms. like… they’re the ones bringing these ships to lives, they’re one of the few people who saw the potential between two characters whose dynamics, whether or not they interact in canon, were overlooked by most fans, and they created something beautiful out of these potential dynamics. like??? hello???? that is pure genius.

not to mention how they’re the lifelines for other people who enjoy these ships but didn’t have any fics to consume until these tireless writers spent hours or days or weeks or months or years writing about these characters and their relationships, and just shared the worlds they created with their audiences for free.

or how they singlehandedly introduced the ships to new people who would’ve otherwise never thought about these ships before.

how they could just make people fall in love with the dynamics between characters who have little to no canon screentime together.

how they could just make people fall in love with the dynamics between characters who aren’t lovers in canon, characters who don’t indicate any clear hint of romance in canon.

how they see what most fans don’t and how they create such beautiful worlds for these characters are simply insane.

Minor spoilers for a side mission in Costa Del Sol. It pops up after you finish the main missions there and the idea hit me out of nowhere 😂

“Johnny?”

“Cloud! Hey babe what’s up?”

“I just- you move fast.”

“What do you mean?”

“I just saw you at your hotel.”

“Hm? Oh! Well… ya see… there’s been a small, little problem with that. Here come on, I’ll show you what I mean.”

When they made it to the inn they were shocked to find not only Johnny, but also five other Johnny’s. Cloud blinked at the sight of them all, blushing a deep red at the immediate thoughts that ran through his head at the sight of them.

Luckily, Yuffie was too busy freaking out over them to notice anything, running between them and asking them a million and one questions.

Before Cloud could join in the questioning Johnny - his Johnny - came up beside him, hooking an arm around his waist and leaning heavily on him with a sad look.

“Babe! I don’t know how you put up with me! I never shut up and the Johnny’s keep trying to argue with me about who is actually dating you.” Cloud felt his blush spread across his ears, ignoring the chuckles from his friends as a couple of the other Johnny’s came over as well.

One took his other side while another knelt in front of him, the latter taking his hands and looking up at him with starry eyes.

“But we’re all Johnny so doesn’t that just mean we’re all dating him? I mean… I could think of a few ways we could settle the debate.”

Cloud ducked his head at the words, attempting to squirm from the holds on him as the other Johnny’s - who apparently heard everything - came running over, full heartedly agreeing and nodding along.

The AO3 Primary Ship Search add-on for Firefox (it's called AO3 First Tag Search for Chrome) adds this little checkbox to the AO3 advanced search page

And if you check the box, the search only returns fics where the pairing you entered is the first one tagged. This is better than the otp:true operator imo because it will show fics with secondary/background pairings too as long as your preferred ship is the main one.

You can even use the add-on in Firefox or Kiwi browser on Android mobile.
