having a freeze response to stress is so funny in the context of normal adult stressors. millions of years of evolution are trying to tell me that the email will not find me if i stay very still and do nothing

“Not that writing is difficult. It isn’t. It’s easy. The difficult aspect to me is in the doing of it — the discipline of sitting alone and DOING IT.”
I never expected to feel so seen, as a writer, by a 70s game show host 😭

[a letter from Gene Rayburn, typewritten on his personal letterhead, to Sandford Brown, the editor of the Saturday Evening Post]
Dear Mr. Brown,
You'll never know what anguish you've caused by asking me to write one of your Human Comedy features. You see, I have always secretly admired those who can write. Even badly. Not that writing is difficult. It isn’t. It’s easy. The difficult aspect to me is in the doing of it — the discipline of sitting alone and DOING IT. Since your first letter months ago I have thought about it almost every day.
"Today I'll start." "What'll I write about?" "Who'd be interested in what I have to say?" "I'll do it tomorrow." Tomorrow has never come for me. It's driving me out of my skull. Every time I go to a movie, watch the late show, or do anything that isn't absolutely necessary an overwhelming guilt comes over me. "I should be writing that essay instead of wasting my time watching this movie." And so it goes. You've ruined me for the enjoyment of motion pictures, both television and theatre types, for pro football, art galleries, reading, bicycling in the park, and other of lifes assorted pleasures. I'll tell you how far it's gone: one night I couldn't even — never mind, you've got the picture.
Now your second letter has arrived asking why I have not responded to the first. I am near panic.
(Incidentally, your typewriter needs cleaning. The middle of the o's and e's are all filled in.)
One more communique from you and I'll be back on the analysts couch. Since I can't afford that I have decided to chain myself to the typewriter and have a go at it. I enclose the fruits of my anguish. Now I'm really in trouble: if you send me a rejection slip I'll have to end it all!
Farewell, Torquemada!
Gene Rayburn
