Since the og Urusei Yatsura op is trending on tiktok and people are using it for their ships. Will this hastily made drawing that I made in only an hour convince all of you to watch either the reboot or 1987 of my most favorite anime? Please 🥺
(If you’re not convinced then just know this anime was the first published manga by Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2)

Ranma 1/2 and the Anything-Goes School of Accidental Trans Narrative
Tumblr media
Editor’s Note: In editing this piece, we struggled to find a way to talk about the series’ conceit in a way that was trans-inclusive, given that it derives from an essentialist concept of gender being immutably connected to genitals. Eventually, we decided that for readability, it would be best to discuss the series in the terms it defines for itself: that the main character is about a boy who “becomes a girl” when splashed with cold water.Content Warning: Discussions of transphobia, dysphoria, gender essentialism, queerphobia, toxic masculinity, and abusive parenting.
Anime fans under 25 are unlikely to be familiar with Ranma 1/2. A screwball martial arts comedy by the same author as Inuyasha, the manga ran from 1987 to 1996, with a 161-episode television adaptation that was one of the first anime series licensed in the US. It follows a sixteen-year-old martial artist named Ranma Saotome as he deals with a wild and wacky assortment of love rivals, magic curses, and truly ridiculous fighting styles.
Ranma 1/2 has its fair share of highs and lows (some of which have already been discussed at AniFem), but the most famous aspect of the series is that Ranma turns into a girl when splashed with cold water and then turns back into a boy when splashed with hot water. This “magical sex-change” is often the only thing people know about the series. Yet while Ranma 1/2 is officially the story of a cis boy dealing with a body-morphing curse, the series also accidentally provides a resonant allegory for transmasculine identity.
Read it at Anime Feminist!

Do people are getting tired of Lum’s popularity?
When you think of Urusei Yatsura, what is the first thing you think of?
Tumblr media
That’s right, Lum
Lum is literally the mascot of UY, and it’s pretty much nothing without her. Anything UY related is about Lum. But don’t people get tired of her a little bit? I’m mean, Urusei Yatsura is kind of an old anime. And it was made in a time where Anime in general wasn’t mainstream yet. But let me tell you the history of Lum and how her popularity came to be.
Urusei Yatsuras first chapter was published in September 24, 1978. When Lum first appeared in the chapter, she was a one off antagonist. After several chapters, fans wanted to see Lum more. Takahashi listened and Lum quickly became a main character.
Tumblr media
In the 80s thanks to the anime, Lum became a Japanese 80s phenomenon. So much so there was merch about her, posters about her and music sung by her (I guess), she was everywhere!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though the manga was cancelled in 1987, people still remember Lum and love her.
Okay, well, just because Lum was popular in Japan, that doesn’t mean she wasn’t popular or well known outside of Japan (besides that terrible BBC dub). Let me tell you how America knew Lum.
A singer named Matthew Sweet made two music videos released on MTV on 1991. With the first being “Girlfriend”, which features clips from an anime film called “Space Adventure Cobra”, while the second being “I’ve Been Waiting” features clips from Urusei Yatsura, which, you guessed it, features Lum. That’s how people knew Lum and I hope they were surprised that the creator also made Ranma 1/2 (which was in the 90s).
youtube
Americans and anime fans became in love with Lum. So much so that back then, they consider themselves as “Lum fans”, not “UY fans”.
Which brings me to my question, do people are getting tired of Lum’s popularity? The answer is hard to answer. Because Urusei Yatsura has become relevant over the years and people are starting to know the other characters. But overall, it's Lum we're talking about. But I won't blame them because Urusei Yatsura is such an old manga. So if people remember or know Lum more but not the others, then that isn't really fair.
Because when you look at the characters of UY, it's quite big. The characters are all underrated. Some of the characters are even inspirations for Rumiko's other mangas, like Ryunosuke being a prototype of Ranma.
Tumblr media
Urusei Yatsura is what I would call... a classic.

高橋 洋子 is a Japanese singer, composer and songwriter who creates popular music, jazz and anisong.
Music has accompanied her throughout her life. She began her adventure at the age of two, learning to play the piano from her father. While in elementary school, she attended the Takinogawa choir. At the age of 10, she participated in an album depicting the works of Osamu Tezuka. In high school she was a member of a band. At university, she was active in a music club and aspired to become an opera singer. Together with members of the music club, she founded the band Yau Power. In 1986, the band participated in the first CSPC , a competition organized by Kitty Records, and won a prize. In 1987, she won an audition for the choral group "LOVE MACHINE," which supported Toshinobu Kubota's "Groovin'" tour.
Before her major label debut, she performed as a chorus singer who accompanied artists such as Toshinobu Kubota, Yumi Matsutoyi, Wink, Miki Imai and Yuki Saito. During this period, she began working on her career as a singer. As a studio musician, she created music for commercials and soundtracks.
In 1991, she made her debut as a ballad singer with the song "P.S. I miss you."
In 1992, she won the 34th Japan Record Award for Best Newcomer for her song "Once more I miss you." That same year, she also won the Rookie of the Year Award at the 25th Japan Cable Awards for her song "P.S. I miss you."
In 1995, she studied music in Los Angeles, USA. After returning to Japan, she teamed up with Toshiyuki Omori, who decided to participate in a cover project of the theme song "Fly Me to the Moon" for Neon Genesis Evangelion. Thanks to the suggestion of Toshimichi Ohtsuki (King Records), she sang the song "Cruel Angel's Thesis."
Her voice will be heard not only in the Evangelion series, but also in "Ranma 1/2" (where she created under the pseudonymYAWMIN) and "All-powerful Culture Catgirls" ( YAUMIN).
In 2000, she became an freelancer. In the meantime, she worked as a caregiver. The artist recalls this time as a period when she withdrew from the entertainment industry. However, she did not completely suspend her entertainment activities. When invited, she appeared on television, recorded and performed live.
