Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint, OR (No. 6)
The Crooked River is a tributary, 125 miles (201 km) long, of the Deschutes River in the U.S. state of Oregon. The river begins at the confluence of the South Fork Crooked River and Beaver Creek in southeastern Crook County. Of the two tributaries, the South Fork Crooked River is the larger and is sometimes considered part of the Crooked River proper. A variant name of the South Fork Crooked River is simply "Crooked River". The Deschutes River flows north into the Columbia River.
The South Fork Crooked River originates in an area called Misery Flat, along the Deschutes County, Lake County and Harney County boundaries, north of Glass Buttes. The South Fork's tributaries drain Hampton Buttes to the west and Mackey Butte to the east. The South Fork Crooked River flows north for 76 miles (122 km), collecting tributaries including Buck Creek and Twelvemile Creek before joining Beaver Creek to form the Crooked River proper near Paulina in Crook County.

How To Know What’s Real Podcast: Exposing Misinformation, Deepfakes, Illusions & Conspiracies
Two generations ago, print magazines existed as a primary form of communication, cultural exchange, and social commentary. The advent of the digital age has issued a terminal notice to print magazines with only limited methods for recovery.
The Atlantic is an American magazine that has an exceptionally long and storied history. It was founded in 1857 in Boston as The Atlantic Monthly, a literary and cultural magazine that published leading writers' commentary on education, the abolition of slavery, and other major political issues of that time. Its founders included Francis H. Underwood and prominent writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and John Greenleaf Whittier. James Russell Lowell was its first editor.
On July 28, 2017, The Atlantic announced that billionaire investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs (the widow of former Apple Inc. chairman and CEO Steve Jobs) had acquired majority ownership through her Emerson Collective organization, with a staff member of Emerson Collective, Peter Lattman, being immediately named as vice chairman of The Atlantic. David G. Bradley and Atlantic Media retained a minority share position in this sale. In December 2020, former Wired editor-in-chief Nicholas Thompson was named CEO of The Atlantic.
Like many legacy print companies -- New York Times, Conde Nast -- The Atlantic has developed a podcast strategy. Its signature podcast -- Radio Atlantic --"road tests the big ideas that both drive the news and shape our culture. Through conversations—and sometimes sharp debates—with the most insightful thinkers and writers on topics of the day, Radio Atlantic complicates overly simplistic views. It will cut through the noise with clarifying, personal narratives. It will, hopefully, help listeners make up their own mind about certain ideas."
Radio Atlantic says: "The national conversation right now can be chaotic, reckless, and stuck. Radio Atlantic aims to bring some order to our thinking—and encourage listeners to be purposeful about how they unstick their mind."
The Atlantic's How to Know Series podcast continues the framework built by Radio Atlantic with this smart, probing, and often prescriptive podcast. Started in late 2021, this podcast offers listeners a different focus for every season. The podcast began in 2021 with a series called How To Build A Happy Life.
In this season, How to Know What’s Real co-hosts Megan Garber and Andrea Valdez explore the proliferation of misinformation and the rise of deepfakes and even illusions, hoping to understand what’s real and what’s not. Now that the internet, social media, and AI are integrated into much of our lives, it’s easy to lose our grip on reality.
What is “real life,” now that the internet and AI are integrated into so much that we do? In the new season of The Atlantic’s How To series, the podcast explores the web’s effects on our brains and how narrative, repetition, and even a focus on replaying memories can muddy our ability to separate fact from fiction.
How do we come to believe the things we do? Why do conspiracy theories flourish? And how can we train our brains to recognize misinformation online?
In the May 13th episode, the podcast focuses on how social media has made it easier to build more parasocial relationships with celebrities and influencers. What impact are those connections having on our relationships IRL? And how do they shift our understanding and expectations of intimacy and trust?
Florida State University assistant professor Arienne Ferchaud defines parasocial relationships and discusses how new technologies are changing the role of entertainment in our lives.
Check out How to Know What’s Real. The previous seasons on time, happiness, and expectations are worthwhile, informative, and thoughtful listens.

Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint, OR (No. 3)
The Crooked River Railroad Bridge, part of a BNSF Railway line between the Columbia River and Bend, Oregon, crosses Oregon's Crooked River Canyon in southern Jefferson County. The bridge is 320 feet (98 m) above the river and when it was completed in 1911, it was the second-highest railroad bridge in the United States. It is a steel two-hinge arch span with a total length of 460 feet (140 m).
The crossing of the Crooked River played a critical role in the competition to build a railroad up the Deschutes River Valley. The incentive for railroad construction was reaching the vast stands of timber south of Bend. The Oregon Trunk Railway Company, a subsidiary of the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway owned by James J. Hill of the Great Northern Railway, started up the west side of the Deschutes while the Des Chutes Railroad, owned by Edward Harriman of the Union Pacific, started up the east side. At North Junction, approximately 65 miles (105 km) south of the Columbia River, Hill's Oregon Trunk crossed over to the east bank. At 126 miles (203 km) both railroads would have had to cross a major tributary of the Deschutes, the Crooked River. There was only one place where the cliffs on both sides were close enough to build a bridge. Jim Hill had obtained the rights to the location when his Oregon Trunk Railroad acquired the Central Oregon Railroad Company on December 1, 1909. The Central Oregon had laid no track and the rights to the bridge site were its principal asset. Hill's acquisition of the location forced Harriman to negotiate a settlement whereby the Oregon Trunk, Hill's railroad, would own almost the entire line from the Columbia to Bend but Harriman's company would have the right to use the track.
Through a series of mergers the rail line and the bridge became part of the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (which changed its name to BNSF Railway in 2005). Union Pacific, Harriman's old railroad, still has the right to use the track. Great Northern extended the line south from Bend to Chemult in 1928.

AU Tudor: Best Destinations for Henry VIII's Wives (That is, if they had never married him)
Catherine Parr-Baroness Latymer (1512-1565)
Catherine Parr and her husband Jon Neville had been very close since they got married, despite being 19 years older than her, Catherine loved her husband and her stepchildren whom she loved as a mother. Her life was quiet, she had a husband who loved her and two stepchildren who loved her as a mother, but Catalina was sad she longed to have a baby with her husband and since there was no pregnancy from her first marriage with Eduardo Borough and after almost nine years of her second childless marriage, the lady was thought to be barren.
In the year 1542 John Neville began to suffer health problems and fears for her life, Catherine did not separate from her husband and did not hesitate to sell some of her jewelry to pay for the best doctors she could find . Fortunately, John began to recover at the beginning of 1543 and by the middle of that year he could walk, this made the family very happy and John was always grateful to his wife for the sacrifice he made.
The joy intensified when in 1544 Catherine began to suffer a series of pains in her stomach and dizziness, thinking that it was a serious illness, she called her doctors who told her that she was pregnant and it was a great surprise for the family, but they were very happy. On October 3, 1544, the couple's only daughter, Anne Catherine, was born and this birth was considered a miracle, John and Catherine were loving parents with both their daughter and John's older children.
A year later Margaret Neville married her fiancé Ralph Bigod in a simple ceremony and nine months later, young John Neville married Lucy Somerset and Catalina gave her daughter-in-law one of her necklaces that was a gift from her family recognizing her as part of your family.
Catherine's life was quiet with her husband and daughter, whom she raised and gave a lot of affection, but Catherine's joy was even more when Margaret's first son, Richard, was born in 1547 and it is known that the baroness took care of that child like his grandson. That same year, Catherine was reunited with her sister, Anne Parr, who was Countess of Pembroke and Baroness Herbert of Cardiff, both decided to compromise her children, Anne Catherine and Edward Herbert, ensuring a good future for their children. Anne Parr died in 1552, but the marriage negotiations continued at the choice of William Herbert, Anne's widower.
In the year 1555 John Neville passed away at 62 years of age, her death destroyed Catherine from her and five years later she decided to take refuge in a convent for a few months to honor the death of her beloved husband. Five months later, Catherine returned to her stepchildren and her daughter, from whom she never separated.
Three years later, in 1563, Anne Catherine and Edward Herbert were married in a great ceremony attended by the prince and cardinal George of England, son of Arthur I. It is known that the widow cried with joy and gave the promised land in the lands of the North, in addition to giving her daughter some clothes that she made herself.
The following months were quiet for Catherine as she received continuous visits from her children and grandchildren, in addition to being very happy when she found out that her daughter, Anne, was pregnant for the first time and the couple of counts spent a season with the widow.
