Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint, OR (No. 6)
The Crooked River is a tributary, 125 miles (201 km) long, of the Deschutes River in the U.S. state of Oregon. The river begins at the confluence of the South Fork Crooked River and Beaver Creek in southeastern Crook County. Of the two tributaries, the South Fork Crooked River is the larger and is sometimes considered part of the Crooked River proper. A variant name of the South Fork Crooked River is simply "Crooked River". The Deschutes River flows north into the Columbia River.
The South Fork Crooked River originates in an area called Misery Flat, along the Deschutes County, Lake County and Harney County boundaries, north of Glass Buttes. The South Fork's tributaries drain Hampton Buttes to the west and Mackey Butte to the east. The South Fork Crooked River flows north for 76 miles (122 km), collecting tributaries including Buck Creek and Twelvemile Creek before joining Beaver Creek to form the Crooked River proper nearPaulina in Crook County.

This is a special one! This is the one and only caveman bridge here in GP. It was designed in 1931 by Conde McCullough. McCullough was influenced by the art deco style which is very symmetrical, repetitive and generally reflects what is called “modernity of machines”. This art style has been a big fascination of my own so when I was asked to do the custom piece I was ecstatic! Thanks for letting me do this one! Love how it turned out! Be sure to check out the video! . . . #art #artist #artdeco #bridges #bridgesoforegon #tattooartist #design #grantspass #cavemanbridge #illustration #photography #oregon #pnw #medford #ashland #centralpoint #merlin (at Grants Pass, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfwGmfPLzFk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Siuslaw Bridge, Florence, Oregon, Infrared”
.
©2022 Gary L. Quay
Spring is here, and it's time for the infrared to emerge for the warmer months. This is the Siuslaw Bridge in Florence, Oregon. It's part of Hwy 101 on the Oregon Coast, and was designed by Conde McCullough, who also designed a number of other Oregon Coastal bridges.
I turned my D810 into an infrared camera by sticking a Hoya R72 filter in front of it.

Oregon : ep85
Between 1921 and 1936 Conde Balcom McCullough designed and built 600 bridges, many of which are located along the rugged coastal Highway 101 in Oregon. McCullough’s bridges were built economically and efficiently, and yet are still beautiful, often featuring Romanesque arches, Gothic spires and art deco obelisks.
Aside from the sheer ruggedness of nature itself, McCullough’s bridges are the defining feature of the Oregon coast. McCullough’s bridges look honest and enduring, and with a touch of the ever present coastal fog, make spectacular subjects for fine photographs.
Oregon’s coastal highway isn’t exceedingly twisty, nor is it exceedingly straight, but it is incredibly scenic. Sea stacks dot the coastline, and the northern Pacific is generally cold and inhospitable for anyone other than seasoned fisherman.
The ride north along the coast isn’t exactly cheerful, but it is fascinating, and consequently it is lifting my spirits. In fact, I begin stopping at each of the McCullough bridges and documenting them with the camera. It's the first time since “The Anastasia Debacle” that I’ve felt creative. It’s easy for me to feel a consonance with the gloomy surroundings I suppose.
Without these sturdy and somber bridges, the Oregon coast would be impassable. In some ways, it feels like a metaphor for life itself, but I'm not exactly sure how or why.
At some point along the journey I stumble upon a spectacular scene. A long low bridge crossing a huge bay, with two men fishing in a canoe. It looks like the scene from Godfather II where Fredo is executed and sent to the bottom of Lake Tahoe. I stop for a moment and compose a photograph that I’m certain will make an excellent panoramic.
After a quick pat on my own back for my photographic accomplishment I continue north through Tillamook (the cheddar capital of Oregon) and eventually to Astoria where I am pleasantly surprised to find the granddaddy of all Oregon bridges, the Astoria-Megler. This bridge was the final piece of Highway 101 to be constructed, connecting Olympia, Washington to Los Angeles, California. It’s a spectacular sight, over four miles long and with a clearance underneath of 196 feet.
I spend the rest of the afternoon finding vantage points of the bridge in the hills above Astoria. The bridge is photogenic from nearly every angle. From high up on the hill, the bridge has beautiful leading lines and a gorgeous vanishing point. From below, it appears large and majestic. It’s hard to take a bad photograph of the Astoria-Megler. But as I’ve mentioned to you before, my goal isn’t to take a good image of each location. My goal is the take the absolute reference photo for each location. "Better than Google." So I spend the afternoon scouting locations and studying the light.
I find a location that is ideal for early morning light and plan to return then. I also find a perfect spot for sunset. With a little time to spare, I book a cheap hotel in town and then settle into waiting for the sun to set so I can make my evening photo. The sky does not disappoint. A fiery sunset with bright reds, yellows and oranges, morphs and fades into subdued magentas, pinks and blues.
The sky is filled with a myriad of emotions, and as the day fades into night I find solace deep within myself.
Maybe sunrise will bring a new day.

Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint, OR (No. 3)
The Crooked River Railroad Bridge, part of a BNSF Railway line between the Columbia River and Bend, Oregon, crosses Oregon's Crooked River Canyon in southern Jefferson County. The bridge is 320 feet (98 m) above the river and when it was completed in 1911, it was the second-highest railroad bridge in the United States. It is a steel two-hinge arch span with a total length of 460 feet (140 m).
The crossing of the Crooked River played a critical role in the competition to build a railroad up the Deschutes River Valley. The incentive for railroad construction was reaching the vast stands of timber south of Bend. The Oregon Trunk Railway Company, a subsidiary of the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway owned by James J. Hill of the Great Northern Railway, started up the west side of the Deschutes while the Des Chutes Railroad, owned by Edward Harriman of the Union Pacific, started up the east side. At North Junction, approximately 65 miles (105 km) south of the Columbia River, Hill's Oregon Trunk crossed over to the east bank. At 126 miles (203 km) both railroads would have had to cross a major tributary of the Deschutes, the Crooked River. There was only one place where the cliffs on both sides were close enough to build a bridge. Jim Hill had obtained the rights to the location when his Oregon Trunk Railroad acquired the Central Oregon Railroad Company on December 1, 1909. The Central Oregon had laid no track and the rights to the bridge site were its principal asset. Hill's acquisition of the location forced Harriman to negotiate a settlement whereby the Oregon Trunk, Hill's railroad, would own almost the entire line from the Columbia to Bend but Harriman's company would have the right to use the track.
Through a series of mergers the rail line and the bridge became part of the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (which changed its name to BNSF Railway in 2005). Union Pacific, Harriman's old railroad, still has the right to use the track. Great Northern extended the line south from Bend to Chemult in 1928.
