Day "Excited like a kid" 37 @ #中里太郎右衛門 I got to do #Rakuyaki today!!😆😆😆😆😆 To be honest I am exhausted, both physically and mentally, stretched rather thin, only powered by will. Being in another country learning new techniques, and my Japanese is not exactly fluent. Although everyone helps me out and pretty much take cares of me, it's still a steep learning curve and taking a toll on me. I have been borrowing tomorrow's strength to do today's work. I only have a few more days here and there are so much more I would like to do... I am utterly grateful for all the support I have received! Back to raku yaki, I used Sensei's #hikidashikoro clay to make the chawan. Yes, that impossible to throw clay. I only managed to make 2 and my work is all the way at the back hence I need a little bit of help from Sensei. Just in case🤞. How exciting!! Really excited to have experience it. My shape of chawan still needs work, although Sensei said they are alright. Rakuyaki part deux! ** Every time I hold a piece of raku ware I become fascinated by all the imperfections, the little bumps and indentations. They are surprisingly light for it's size and require two hands to drink from. A common practice in the tea ceremony is that after the ceremony master has given you a bowl with green tea, you rotate it in your hands. I suspect this is to appreciate the body of the teabowl not only with the eye but also with the hands. ** One of the key features of raku is that they are handshaped instead of thrown on a turntable. This gives the bowls an uneven and robust look, but most importantly a very unique appearance. Every bowl has its own imperfections, it has its own personality. This characteristic became very prized in Japan. Like in any culture, gift giving is almost never a purely altruistic act. Especially in Japan political motives were the main reason of exchanging gifts. And nothing is better than giving a unique piece of art. Exquisite pieces were often given a personalized name and were known all over the country. ** The tea ceremony became the center point of Japanese culture in the 16th century as it was the perfect vessel to convey the Wabi Sabi philosophy. Wabi sabi consists of two words: 詫び (wabi) which means solitude or loneliness and 寂び (sabi) which means withered or lean and like any philosophy there are many untranslatable subtleties to it but I don't think Instagram is the proper platform to discuss that as I'm already pushing it to its limit with bricks of text. ** In contrast to the West where the focus was on perfect proportions aiming for eternity, the East highlighted the fleeting part of existence and its unexpected sides. ** All three bowls can be seen in the Asian pavilion.
