over the past year or so i’ve made an assortment of little note-sheets where i document some of the things i think/have thought about while designing and/or drawing my characters...a tad navel-gazey, but i like making them, and people seem to enjoy reading and looking at them, so who’s to say I won’t make some more

Months before I left for my trip to Granada, Spain, I was hit with a stroke of extraordinary luck: Hoopoe Press asked if I'd like to get a review copy of the new, full translation of Radwa Ashour's Granada trilogy, a multigenerational epic of Arabic literature describing the fall of Muslim rule in medieval Spain and the impact it had on real families in the city of Granada and throughout Andalusia. Um...YES I wanted one! This is the first time the entire trilogy has been available in English translation, thanks to translator Kay Heikkinen; the entire series comes in an impressively compact package, complete with a foreword by Marina Warner.
I'm only one novel in, and am just starting sequel Marayama now, but trust me: the first book, at the very least, is an absolute must-read. For anyone interested in Muslim life in Spain, or anyone visiting Granada, sure, because it's astounding historical fiction, but truly for anyone who loves a good multigenerational novel (and I know there are a bunch of you following me). Populated by bold, subversive female protagonists and a poetic narrative about the pain and suffering of seeing your culture be suppressed and erased, this first novel was simply excellent (and I have two books to go!).
I'll come back and hype this one up again when I'm done with the trilogy, but I wanted to let you know about it now, because it comes out November 5...And because I mentioned it in every other sentence when my family and I were touring the city of Granada and its oldest neighborhoods. I felt like I knew that much more about the Albaycín thanks to Ashour's fantastic writing and its excellent translation. Go put it on hold!

Forthcoming Nov 2024: Classics, New and Old
In November 2024, two deceased giants of Arabic literature — Elias Khoury and Radwa Ashour — have new English translations of their work. In Ashour’s case, her classic Granada is finally getting a complete translation, rather than only the first book in the trilogy; in Khoury’s, his Children of the Ghetto is a posthumous translation of a posthumous novel, as translator Humphrey Davies has also…

Suspended between two lives: Specters by Radwa Ashour
To the young, because they are young, everything looks bigger, taking on proportions relative to their age and to the space their bodies occupy, amidst other bodies heavier, taller, and broader than theirs. The tallest person is the oldest, and the uncle or aunt who has reached the age of thirty is of such an advanced age that it is difficult to grasp the concept of this “thirty,” based on the…

!WARNING FOR THE VERY GLITTERY AND BRIGHT IMAGES AT THE END!

🦣 Hi! I've been on this site for a while now and never really created a proper introduction. The preffered name I go for is Wiola, but I also use the name Cosma! 🦣
🌈 I'm 18 yo, white and polish. Transneutral agender (+ most likely nonhuman objectid but figuring it out) and tme! Lesbian oriented aroace. My primary language is polish but the stuff I reblog and post will probably almost always be either english or translated to english. I go by they/moth pronouns, in polish I use one/ich (girl they/them lmao) ONLY! I also prefer using feminatives over masculatives or neutral terms (I'm fine with being called either bro or dude or anything like this just like the feminine terms more). 🌈
🐩 I'm neurodivergent, currently diagnosed with ADHD, OCD and misophonia but I'm trying to consult with my therapist about a possible autism diagnosis! I NEED TONE TAGS, NOT ALL OF THEM, BUT /j, /lh, /nm, /nbh ARE VERY IMPORTANT FOR ME! 🐩
🌌 My current fixations are plushies and stuffed animals. I'm overal very interested in animals and they bring me happiness and comfort. I've also been a fan of the Pokemon franchise for around nine years now. Besides that, Warrior Cats and Littlest Pet Shop.
I love nature, space, the sea and the ocean. 🌌
🦇 I mostly reblog here but sometimes I post art. 🦇
🦖 Askbox is always open. 🦖
I try to tag the fandom posts I reblog with each respective fandom, if you need me to tag anything so you could block it please tell me! The only thing I won't be tagging are the calls for action, fundraisers and general informational posts coming from either Palestine, Sudan, Congo or any other country. If you are bothered by any of those, do not interact with this blog, piece of shit.
For further DNI list:
- homophobes, transphobes, racists, anisemites, islamophobes, ableists, TERFs, bigots overal.
- pedos or zoos, necros, proshippers, comshippers or people neutral towards them.
- zionists, people neutral towards genocides, crisises or occupations currently happening in the world, pro-Russia fuckers.
- people who ignore the fact that Native Americans have asked multiple times to do not put feathers behind character's ears or general anyone who does cultural appropriation.
- people who support J.K. Rowling, Erin Hunter, Andrew Hussie, the creators of South Park or anyone like that.
- Harry Potter fans. Even if you do not support J.K. Rowling.
- I'll probably be very suspicious about South Park fans interacting. Please be normal, think for yourself, steal the show episodes from somewhere to not benefit either the creators, Paramount or Comedy Central and do not justify posting bigotry by saying that "it's South Park so of course it's going to have [insert a type of bigotry here]". Just please, be normal it's not that difficult!!!
- also please do not interact with this blog or talk to me if you're below the age of 16! I'm usually okay with people not younger than 15 interacting with me (except the fact that I will always treat them as children), but I don't feel comfortable allowing it on this blog. I will be blocking everyone below that age who interacts for my own comfort, so please don't get upset over that boundary and stay safe.
This is mostly a SFW blog, but some things (like discussing heavy topics in fiction, blood on artworks etc.) might come around as not suitable for younger audience! I also might reblog from the blogs that have either suggestive/NSFW URLs or post mature content, so keep that in mind before following or scrolling down throught my blog.
I tag my art with -> #my art
And I'll probably start tagging my other posts with -> #bat bs

Almost halfway there!
For more than six months, my family has been trapped in Gaza during an unrelenting and brutal war. They have witnessed unimaginable horrors—experiencing profound loss, enduring constant terror, and surviving in perpetual fear. The war claimed the life of my brother Mohammad Taha, leaving behind his young wife and their one-year-old daughter. Our family home was destroyed, leaving them no place of safety. With no resources and limited options, their situation is desperate.
I am creating this fund to ask for support to provide my mother, younger sister, sister-in-law, and baby niece the means to escape the dangers of Gaza and start a life in Egypt. Your generosity can light a path to safety and hope for them in these dark times."

Read Palestine Week
🇵🇸 Good morning, my beautiful bookish bats. Can I start by saying a huge THANK YOU for sharing my Queer Palestinian Book post? Seriously, thank you so much. Let's keep that momentum by observing Read Palestine Week (Nov 29 - Dec 5). I've compiled a list of books to help you, along with a list of upcoming events and resources you can use this week and beyond.
🇵🇸 A collective of over 350 global publishers and individuals issued a public statement expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people. Publishers for Palestine have organized an international #ReadPalestine week, starting today (International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People).
🇵🇸 These publishers have made many resources and e-books available for free (with more to come). A few include award-winning fiction and poetry by Palestinian and Palestinian diaspora authors. You'll also find non-fiction books about Palestinian history, politics, arts, culture, and “books about organizing, resistance, and solidarity for a Free Palestine.” You can visit publishersforpalestine.org to download some of the books they have available.

Ahmed and Nada lost their joy because of the war 💔🍉
I am Ahmed, 27 years old, an accountant from Gaza, and this is my story:
I finished my university studies in 2019, then I signed a contract with a private company working in the field of electrical appliances. I moved to more than one place in the company and gained sufficient experience. I was saving money so that I could get married and build a family full of love and reassurance.
On August 21, 2023, after I chose my life partner, Nada, we got engaged, and we pledged on the Quran of our hearts to nourish the flower of love between us, so we drew a sun and a moon for our days, and we pledged to stay together until death.
This picture is from the day of my engagement to Nada 😔
I gathered shekels upon shekels, I stuck stones next to stones, and raised the thresholds, keys of music that exuded melody, I extended water to it from the springs of the heart, and I extended the connections of electricity and light, I furnished it until the house that would contain us with its roses and immerse us in its warmth began to come together, the house that would be the safety of our family in the future grows from the depths of the impossible and emerges from the carvings of suffering and the rock of misery.
And here the ship of life docks and settles on what we loved and wished for. I love, study, and work. We choose the architectural designs of our house and begin the preparations. We plan our marriage and engagement days. We choose our wedding hall, and our days pass in peace and quiet.
We did not know that fate was hiding its resurrection behind our doors and under our pillows, and that in the blink of an eye, a catastrophe would occur, the world would be turned upside down, and destruction would cover the face of the universe. We left our home on the third day of the war and departed without knowing that this was the last time we would see our home before it turned to dust.
On the morning of 10/18/2023, the crows of the sky, the occupation F-16 planes, flew to throw the fires of their hatred with more than one war missile at our new two-story house. After that, the house was turned into rubble, erasing all the memories of childhood and the details of life and the years we spent. They bombed a house that carries within it all kinds of joy, success stories and the challenges of building stone by stone.
Now I am displaced in Khan Younis, living in a tent inside a shelter center located in Mawasi Khan Younis
I created this campaign in February 2024 to raise some money so that I can provide detergent, water and food for my family, and I can build my life, marry Nada, build a new home with a happy couple, and have a different wedding than the one we canceled.
In the name of humanity and universal brotherhood, I hope you will help me get out of the depths of despair and save my future, which is almost lost if it were not for my hope in you to extend a helping hand to everyone who calls for your help, so that their hopes may be revived that goodness in the world will not be cut off, no matter how thick the clouds of evil are
Please donate to me and my family so we can make our dreams come true again.
