Love that Oppenheimer is a deeply disturbing horror movie about a man forced to accept that he is, in a person, the representative manifestation of mankind’s evil in committing one of the greatest horrors of human history - LITERALLY acting as the modern Prometheus, tormented by his sins for the remainder of time. Knowing that he will never be pitied and his actions will forever be utterly unforgivable because the blood of genocide and the potential of total human annihilation will eternally drip from his hands.

But also the simultaneous indictment by the film that to blame a single person for the Manhattan Project is to refuse to accept your own capacity for great evil if the ends ever seem to justify the means, and the culpability of every member of a species that lets itself create something so unspeakably terrible.

Hate that twitter’s take on such a nuanced and brilliantly handled examination of those issues is “movie bad because protagonist not evil enough.”

thinking about it, there’s no way mike didn’t notice will crying in the van scene.

the fact is we’ve been shown repeatedly throughout the seasons that mike’s always the first one to realise when something’s off with will: “he’s quiet today”, being the one to find him on halloween, always being the one to notice when will touches the back of his neck, etc. even in season 3 when they’re fighting and therefore less in tune with each other than before we get the [will voice] “get away from the door” scene.

in fact, in season 4 itself mike is shown to still be so in tune with will - even after their time apart - that, in the roller rink scene, he got up quite literally the second will said “oh no”. he didn’t notice the way that el was clearly uneasy when angela came up to her, but he notices everything when it comes to will.

there’s no way that the mike wheeler we know and love didn’t notice will crying. there has to be another reason he didn’t say anything. there has to be.

i would LOVE to hear everyone else’s theories on why, but first i’d like to propose one of my own: mike doesn’t think he needs to say anything.

to elaborate, in mike and will’s relationship, a lot is left unspoken (“i didn’t say it” “you didn’t have to”). i mean, it makes sense, they’ve known each other for a decade at this point and to 14/15 year olds that’s basically forever. because of this, mike expects will to just tell him things (e.g. mike asking will why he didn’t tell him el was being bullied even though it didn’t make sense to expect him to). mike doesn’t push will to talk to him or tell him why he’s crying or even acknowledge it because he knows that if will wanted him to know, he would tell him. mike has no reason to believe that will would purposefully hide anything from him, he believes that will will tell him if he wants to, when he’s ready.

You aren’t ALWAYS going to be able to have the energy to do what we consider traditionally productive. You won’t always have the motivation.

Yeah, maybe you could have spent two hours studying for that test instead of 15 minutes. Maybe you could have cleaned the kitchen instead of the dishes. And? That’s still something!

Productivity is doing things!! Did you eat food and drink water? You did something that helped your body work! Doodled in class? You made art! Even just posting theories and memes on tumblr dot com is a thing! You thought out the post, figured out how to organize it (even if you don’t realize you did that) and you made it! And now other people can see and you DID something and you should be proud!!!

Be proud of yourself or I am going to show up outside your window tonight and scream positive affirmations louder than a cat who has just discovered her food bowl is empty.
