Hurricane Helene and Quilt Donations
This is all from an email I received from Lo and Behold Stitchery:
Hi all, Kara and Elizabeth here. We hope this message finds you well. We have received SO. MANY. messages from you, our wonderful Lo & Behold community, in the wake of Hurricane Helene and want to say THANK YOU; we cannot stress enough how uplifting and meaningful each and every message and act of support is to Brittany, Peter, our team, and those in Black Mountain, North Carolina. The good news is our community is very resilient, neighbors are coming together to help neighbors, the power is back on in some areas of town including the studio, and food and supplies are starting to arrive. Brittany and Peter are volunteering in the community where they can, cleaning up flood damage in the shop, and also getting settled into their new “glamping” lifestyle while utilities and roads are being repaired. QUILT DRIVE We are hearing from many organizations that bedding and blankets are in critical need. We are ready and able to meet this need and we need your help. Please send any NEW and UNUSED quilts (in any size) to our studio and we will make sure they get into the hands of those who need them. Please ship via the quickest shipping method available. SHIP TO: Brittany Lloyd Lo & Behold Stitchery 102 Black Mountain Ave Black Mountain, NC 28711
WAYS TO SUPPORT So many of you have asked how you can support us and our local community of Black Mountain, NC. While we are beginning to see the early stages of clean up, we are still in a “rescue” period where many people are still trapped in their homes and/or without basic needs: food, shelter, medical supplies and access to clean water. Black Mountain, Asheville, and surrounding towns remain without water and there is no timeline for restoration. Relief is needed in so many ways.
Here are a few ways to help:
Direct Donation: Make a donation here and we will make sure 100% of the proceeds are donated to relief efforts in Black Mountain. Brittany has been directly involved with a grassroots local volunteer medical clinic; we will make sure that this clinic has the medical supplies that are needed.
Purchase a digital pattern from our shop between now and Oct. 13th; 50% of every digital pattern purchase will be donated to Hurricane Relief in our community and 50% will stay with Lo & Behold Stitchery to help support flood clean-up and ongoing operations.
Support a larger organization. We recommend the following organizations that we've seen actively serving our communities in so many ways:
World Central Kitchen: We've always had a deep love for WCK, but receiving a plate from them in our community just hit differently. We are so grateful for this organization.
Operation Air Drop: One of the most immediate needs in our community was air support through planes & helicopters. Operation Air Drop helped with search & rescue efforts and dropping goods in areas that are unreachable by vehicle.
Samaritan's Purse: Based in Boone, North Carolina (western NC), Samaritan's Purse is on the ground providing food, water, and medical aid.
Baptists on Mission: Volunteers from all over North Carolina are providing food, water, and cleanup efforts to help rebuild western North Carolina.
Convoy of Hope: Convoy of Hope is helping give access to clean water, hygiene supplies and ready to eat food.
Direct Donation to Lo & Behold Stitchery: Many are asking how to make donations that directly support Lo & Behold Stitchery with clean up and operations while we get back on our feet. First, thank you so very much, it means more than you could possibly imagine. We ask that you please consider making a donation to help Western NC with one of the options above. If you would like to donate directly to Lo & Behold efforts as we recover from the flood at the studio and also continue operations and support our employees while we get things back up and running, you can donate directly here. Also, feel free to purchase a kit or two from our shop. We also have gift cards available here. From the very bottom of our hearts, thank you for your support in all ways and always. You are the absolute best community. ❤️
We plan to have further opportunities to raise relief funds in the coming weeks. SHIPPING & FULFILLMENT Peter and Brittany have also been hard at work cleaning up the studio to get it operational. The building got several inches of flooding, but thankfully they were able to secure all of the open orders before the hurricane hit. If you are waiting on an order, rest assured it is safe and sound. Our post office in Black Mountain has reopened and we are hopeful that Peter and Michelle will be able to resume shipping orders next week. If you are waiting on an order please keep an eye on your email. We will send you a notification as soon as it ships. FROM BRITTANY & PETER Thank you for all of your kind messages and prayers. With power bank/ internet limitations and also staying busy with digging/ clearing roads/ volunteering where we can, we haven't yet had the opportunity to respond to everyone. They are saying that our area saw a 1,000 year flood, meaning this kind of rainfall happens once every thousand years. We got around 30 inches of rain over a couple of days. We had multiple substantial landslides in our driveway, in our direct proximity around our home and on the way into town. We are still in shock and grateful to be alive. Many of our neighbors have lost their lives and/or have significant loss of property. Our hearts are so heavy with the amount of devastation in our community. We are committed to doing whatever we can to help our fellow neighbors and we appreciate your support in helping us do so. Know that we have been absolutely overwhelmed in the very best ways by all of your love and support, especially during such a scary and uncertain time for us. Thank you for loving us from afar. We feel it.

First finished quilt of the year!
This quilt will be going up for auction as part of Romancing The Vote's voter access fundraising so keep an eye on their site or socials for dates! I've been told summer.
Usually I’d link to a pattern if I bought or was inspired by one but it turns out the pattern I reverse engineered actually used a totally different technique so it would be no help for anyone who wants to replicate this. It's basically a bunch of six inch circular blocks that I trimmed so that there there was only a 1/4" of fabric at the narrow parts of arc so that when sewn together I'd get nice points. You can't get a good idea of the quilting from this lighting but there's a lot of curves that I did with a walking foot and I'm really happy with them.

My first donation quilt is coming along! So that I don't neglect my big projects I'm only working on donation quilts on weekends. This weekend I pieced the blocks, sandwiched it, quilted it and started the binding (all on machine). Now I just need to hand sew the binding and it's done.
During the week I'm working on The Grandma Quilt. I'm also binding this one although the quilting isn't finished because I'm tired of getting fluff everywhere. I really like the contrast of the blue binding with the busy yellow backing and the warm colours of the quilt.

Sometimes I think about the fabric and mask panels that were printed for the pandemic. And i just think about 30 Yrs from now, them and other pandemic relics going into a museum. And the museum would talk the context of the vitriol that cloth masks received then the direction of the US government to deter masks initially because of presumed shortages that were to happen. And the some commentary on toilet paper hoarding and supply chain issues. All while standing in front of little animal prints with masks or very basic baby quilts for dontation that were just rectangular blocks that would have become cloth masks for kids...

in most cases, mentally ill drug addicts are homeless because they have been completely failed by the system. in most cases, homeless people are more than a million times kinder than muskrat has ever been or will ever be
#a lot are also victims of domestic violence#we had people that we literally weren't allowed to help get housing so their kids were taken away#we could at least let them take as much as they needed from our pantry#not just food but like all sorts of supplies#we even had some crochet blankets donated while i was there. like granny square has been worked on for a solid month kinda blankets#she also donated a bunch of handmade quilts

Third baby blanket of the week done! It’s not my favorite fabric combo but it’s the fabric I had in my stash and it’s going to be a day or two until I can get to the store. They are both florals!
I did manage to (mostly) remember to time myself when making this one, and it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to make one of these baby blankets
#sewing#handmade#baby blanket#I should come up with a tag for these because I’m curious how many I’ll be able to make#before I run out of steam or find another thing I can donate#maybe I’ll make tote bags? that way people don’t have to have their stuff in trash bags#because I know local places are giving out supplies on trash bags because that’s what they have#that’s a thought for later. for now: baby blankets!#well okay actually for now music break#because it’s been days since I played an instrument and that’s a keystone function of enrichment for my enclosure#but after that! quilt sandwich time for the next baby quilt

Woohoo, got the Tiny Tiles top done! Now I really have to get through my backlog of tops that need quilting. This brings me to three that I intend to do myself. 😬
I debated putting a turquoise border on it but frankly I don't think I have enough grey fabric to do the other side of one and I don't want to buy more.

During the 2008 recession, my aunt lost her job. Her, her partner, and my three cousins moved across the country to stay with us while they got back on their feet. My house turned from a family of four to a family of nine overnight, complete with three dogs and five cats between us.
It took a few years for them to get a place of their own, but after a few rentals and apartments, they now own a split level ranch in a town nearby. I’ve lost track of how many coworkers and friends have stayed with them when they were in a tight spot. A mother and son getting out of an abusive relationship, a divorcee trying to stay local for his kids while they work out a custody agreement, you name it. My aunt and uncle knew first hand what that kindness meant, and always find space for someone who needed it, the way my parents had for them.
That same aunt and uncle visited me in [redacted] city last year. They are prolific drinkers, so we spent most of the day bar hopping. As we wandered the city, any time we passed a homeless person, my uncle would pull out a fresh cigarette and ask them if they had a light. Regardless of if they had a lighter on hand or not, he offered them a few bucks in exchange, which he explained to me after was because he felt it would be easier for them to accept in exchange for a service, no matter how small.
I work for a company that produces a lot of fabric waste. Every few weeks, I bring two big black trash bags full of discarded material over to a woman who works down the hall. She distributes them to local churches, quilting clubs, and teachers who can use them for crafts. She’s currently in the process of working with our building to set up a recycling program for the smaller pieces of fabric that are harder to find use for.
One of my best friends gives monthly donations to four or five local organizations. She’s fortunate enough to have a tech job that gives her a good salary, and she knows that a recurring donation is more valuable to a non-profit because they can rely on that money month after month, and can plan ways to stretch that dollar for maximum impact. One of those organizations is a native plant trust, and once she’s out of her apartment complex and in a home with a yard, she has plans to convert it into a haven of local flora.
My partner works for a company that is working to help regulate crypto and hold the current bad actors in the space accountable for their actions. We unfortunately live in a time where technology develops far too fast for bureaucracy to keep up with, but just because people use a technology for ill gain doesn’t mean the technology itself is bad. The blockchain is something that she finds fascinating and powerful, and she is using her degree and her expertise to turn it into a tool for good.
I knew someone who always had a bag of treats in their purse, on the odd chance they came across a stray cat or dog, they had something to offer them.
I follow artists who post about every local election they know of, because they know their platform gives them more reach than the average person, and that they can leverage that platform to encourage people to vote in elections that get less attention, but in many ways have more impact on the direction our country is going to go.
All of this to say, there’s more than one way to do good in the world. Social media leads us to believe that the loudest, the most vocal, the most prolific poster is the most virtuous, but they are only a piece of the puzzle. (And if virtue for virtues sake is your end goal, you’ve already lost, but that’s a different post). Community is built of people leveraging their privileges to help those without them. We need people doing all of those things and more, because no individual can or should do all of it. You would be stretched too thin, your efforts valiant, but less effective in your ambition.
None of this is to encourage inaction. Identify your unique strengths, skills, and privileges, and put them to use. Determine what causes are important to you, and commit to doing what you can to help them. Collective action is how change is made, but don’t forget that we need diversity in actions taken.

Marvel’s an Old Lady
He acts like an old lady. I don’t know. Let’s say Billy’s been spending too much time volunteering at an elderly home because he doesn’t want to be on the streets skulking around. It’s rubbed off on him.
Like for example, he knits like crazy at the Watchtower. It gives him something to do with his hands, what can he say?
Marvel: *in an all too small rocking chair, holding too small knitting needles, zoned out, listening to the gods argue while making a quilt that’s like twelve feet long*
Hal Jordan and John Stewart: *peaking around a corner, watching Marvel*
Hal: “That’s what I was saying! He does not look okay.”
John: “Hal, I’m sure he’s fine.”
Hal: “Dude, he’s been at this for like two hours straight. No breaks.”
John: “Wait really?” *sounds more concerned now* “I would’ve thought he’d been at that for two days.”
Hal: “Yeah, no. He’s just been sitting there. Knitting. It’s kinda creepy to be honest.”
John: “Damn.” *uses ring to summon a ruler and float it over to measure the quilt*
Marvel: *doesn’t even notice as Zeus is picking a fight with Solomon*
John: “That thing’s like twelve feet long.”
Hal: “What?” *concern amps up*
Later Billy cut up the quilt a little bit and donated it all to a homeless shelter.
Then of course there’s the classic old lady move of giving out candy. He’d give the younger heroes candies. He’d give the younger heroes who have become adult heroes candies. And overall, he’d just give everyone candies.
Flash: *telling Marvel about some problems with Iris* “—And now she’s mad at me!”
Marvel: “Oh, it’s okay Flash. Here, have some candy.” *puts a strawberry taffy in Barry’s hand*
Flash: *sniffles as he shoves it into his mouth, wrapper and everything* “Thanks, man.”
Or
Damian: *got scolded by Bruce and is now silently brooding on the couch in the Titan’s Tower*
Marvel: “Heyyyyy Robin…” *super awkward* “I uh… heard you got scolded by Mr. Batman.”
Damian: *mini bat-glares him*
Marvel: *awkward pause* “Take a candy.” *gives him an orange taffy*
Damian: *stares at the candy for a bit* “Tt. I have no need for pity-filled gestures.”
Marvel: “It wasn’t meant to be pity-filled. I just thought candy would make you feel better. Sorry.”
Damian: “Don’t waste your apologies.” *eventually eats it*
or
Marvel: *gives a blood covered Red Hood candies even though the man just shot someone in front of him*
Batman: “Don’t encourage him.”
Red Hood: “Definitely encourage me. I have no idea where you get these but they are delicious.”
Then, the pie making.
Supes: *walks into kitchen cause he smells pie* “Marvel? Are you making pies?”
Marvel: *taking a fresh pie out of the oven* “Hm? Yeah! Ms. Kent told me about a new recipe to try.”
Supes: “Ms. Kent? Lois doesn’t make pies.”
Marvel: “Ohhhhh. No. I meant the other Ms. Kent. Your mom. We discuss and make pies and pie recipes. I’ve been to the farm a couple times too so we could bake together- Your mom hasn’t told you?”
Supes: “No?? Why do just casually know my mom like that?”
Marvel: “We met through a Facebook group. Want to try my blueberry?” *holds up pie*
Supes: “Yes??” *gets a slice and takes a bite* “This really good.”
