One Dress a Day Challenge
February: Coeli's Monochrome Picks
The Avengers (s4 e21, "A Touch of Brimstone") / Diana Rigg as Mrs. Emma Peel as the "Queen of Sin"
Fittingly for Leap Day, this costume is the odd one out in this month's group: it's the only one from the 1960s and also the only one from television rather than a movie. The costume, supposedly designed by Diana Rigg herself, was considered a bit too spicy for American TV--well, that plus the situation she finds herself in, which is infiltrating a club of thinly disguised S&M enthusiasts.

Saw this today and thought of the whole Queen of Sin thing in Avengers, where the male fans drool at Emma in that outfit and make rude comments, and then justify their behavior by going “but ... but she’s empowered!”
The fuck she is not.
Get over yourselves and look at what the world is actually like for women. And it’s like that because too many men make it that way.
There's actually a reason that the trope of making a female assassin or female warrior in a video game or comic or action series scantily clad but justifying it as "but she uses it to distract her male enemies!!" is mostly something you only see from male writers and artists and also something that's long been denounced by feminists as misogynistic and objectifying regardless of what "reasoning" is given.
Other feminist writers who actually hold doctorate degrees on feminist subjects and are actually published writers have written on this better than I ever could, but it's a patriarchal myth that women secretly hold so much power and control over men by using sex and seduction. Turning yourself into a sex object will never grant you any access to any real power
The myth that women secretly hold a lot of power and control over men by using sex and seduction is a patriarchal myth that needs to die already. It's a myth that men use as a justification for their misogyny, men who buy into that myth use it at best as a justification to be suspicious of women and at worst to be outright violent towards women.
It's also blatantly false that using nudity or sex appeal to distract men would work in IRL combat because we know that IRL men have no issue with violently murdering nude or partially nude women. Women are murdered by their boyfriends or husbands while she's not wearing any clothes all the time, her nudity sure didn't save her or 'distract' him from violently murdering her. Also think of the high rate of violence and murders against women in the sex industry, most of the women murdered in the sex industry are nude or partially nude while they're murdered by clients or pimps, and their nudity or partial nudity sure doesn't save them by being from being violently murdered by being 'distracting' to the heterosexual men who murder them.

Sometimes i forget that HB and HH share the same universe... can you imagine how the Hazbin hotels season 1 finale looked like from the perspective of the characters of Helluva Boss? Are you really telling me that while those funky little red demons were dealing with their drama and angst there was a damn battle between Heaven and Hell? AND NONE OF THE OTHER SEVEN DEADLY SINS SHOWED UP TO FIGHT? Like, okay i get why they didn't, but seen Ozzie and Bee kill some angels could have been really cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(half of me in tempted to believe that The Sins have never seen Lucifer, their sweet dork of a boss, get angry or lose his cool and watching him beat up Adam terrified them. But the other half of me also believes that he has beaten the shit out of Mammon at least once, while Satan and Ozzie cheered for him).
I NEED to see Blitzo's reacion to all this mess, i bet it was hilarious.

okay so the main criticism i've been seeing against episode 8 is that beelzebub (among other things) is "too nice" to be the sin of gluttony, because she's an attentive hostess, because she expresses worry over blitz's excess drinking, etc., and i wanna talk about it.
the thing is, i feel like this complaint is rooted in the most basic, somewhat cliche idea of the sin of gluttony, and a somewhat boring approach to bee's character in general. the idea is that, as the sin of gluttony, bee should be encouraging over-indulgence, excess, and the self-destructive aspects of party culture and drinking.
but she's the queen bee. she clearly explains that she can feel the "energy" of everyone at her party, and i think that's very important to analyzing exactly what gluttony means to her. instead of indulging in food and alcohol and drugs and being selfish (as gluttony is generally expected to be about), bee feeds on the ENERGY of the demons around her. and in order to get the best energy she can, she needs to be making sure everyone is actually having FUN and having a good time. gluttony, in this sense, is about EXTRAVAGANCE, having the best quality of everything, rather than just everything in general.
i also think this is why she was so put-off by blitz's actions. when he chugs the entire barrel of alcohol and then is absolutely wasted beyond all reason for the rest of the party, he's NOT actually engaging in her sin. he's not being gluttonous; he's not drinking to have a good time or to indulge or to have fun - he's drowning himself in alcohol because he's trying to forget and ignore all his problems, which is a sin much more akin to pride. his energy feels bad to bee because he's not having fun, he's deeply hurt and trying to distract himself by being self-destructive, which is NOT what her sin is about.
(also, remember, this is supposed to be part TWO of the finale. meaning, this episode (and the introduction of bee's character) directly goes hand-in-hand with the introduction of asmodeus, who's entire club IS about indulgence and depravity and everything you'd expect from the sin of lust. bee and the gluttony party are meant to be a direct foil to the energy of ozzie's.)

The city may be run by the mayor, but everyone knows that it's really the "Sins" and "Overlords" that rule this gaff!
Introducing Human Mammon and Bee!
Tumblr media
Big Mamm runs pretty much every industry that makes him cash, he's a simple man with simple needs and his one and only true love is money.
Queen Bee is a guru in food and cosmetics, she's an influencer with a heart of gold and can usually be seen tearing it up in The Hive, her nightclub in the Gluttony District.
[Bee's up close design!]

Thank you once again @blitzy-blitzwing for designing these guys!

"Queen Bee doesn't look like a properly designed Beelzebub! There's nothing on her design that says Glutony!"
Ok... so we're talking about the sin about over self-indulgence, about seeking satisfaction through something you ingest, waste of food, eat or drink stuff that is bad for your body, waste money on overly expensive food....
I wonder is there is a type of escenario where all that happens at once.... oh yes. PARTIES.
So.....

A party queen. One with hair and tail made of the HONEY SHE MENTIONS DON'T STOP ON HER THEME SONG.
Tumblr media
A belly that I bet can digest everything so she's NEVER EVER FULL of food or drinks. Also, works as another big clue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Offers food and drink non-stop, is always up to get something in her, and has a pool full of what seems to be magical honey that she can turn into sweets.
.....nope. Not a convincing Glutony Queen at all. XD

Okay, but I genuinely think it's genius how Ozzie is the only Sin we've seen so far that is associated with fire, because so is lust!
Think about it, what's a way of saying you're horny? You're hot and bothered. What's a surefire way to describe someone getting aroused and/or freaky, especially in smutty works? Things like, "she felt like she was on fire", or "he felt like the temperature of the room had gone up a thousand degrees", or "they felt the place where they'd been touched burn".
Ozzie can manipulate fire, because lust is fire.

Bra-vo!
