King Charles III and Queen Camilla will undertake a State Visit to Kenya
The visit will take place from Tuesday 31st October to Friday 3rd November 2023, and will celebrate the warm relationship between the two countries and the strong and dynamic partnership they continue to forge.
The visit is at the invitation of President Ruto and comes as Kenya prepares to celebrate 60 years of independence. His Majesty’s first visit to a Commonwealth nation as King is therefore to the country in which Queen Elizabeth II’s reign began, having acceded to the throne in Kenya in February 1952.
The King and Queen will visit Nairobi City County, Mombasa County and surrounding areas. Their Majesties’ programme will reflect the ways in which Kenya and the United Kingdom are working together, notably to boost mutual prosperity, tackle climate change, promote youth opportunity and employment, advance sustainable development and create a more stable and secure region.
During the visit, Their Majesties will meet President Ruto and the First Lady as well as and other members of the Kenyan Government, UN staff, CEOs, faith leaders, young people, future leaders and Kenyan Marines training with UK Royal Marines. The King will also attend an event to celebrate the life and work of the Nobel Laureate the late Professor Wangari Maathai, together with Wangari’s daughter, Wanjira Mathai.
The King and Queen’s programme will celebrate the close links between the British and Kenyan people in areas such as the creative arts, technology, enterprise, education and innovation. The visit will also acknowledge the more painful aspects of the UK and Kenya’s shared history, including the Emergency (1952-1960). His Majesty will take time during the visit to deepen his understanding of the wrongs suffered in this period by the people of Kenya. Together, Their Majesties will tour a new museum dedicated to Kenya’s history and will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Uhuru Gardens, as well as visiting the site of the declaration of Kenya’s independence in 1963.
The King and Queen’s programme also will include:
Their Majesties will be greeted in Nairobi with a ceremonial welcome at State House and will each attend bilateral meetings – The King with The President and The Queen with the First Lady, before The President hosts a State Banquet at State House.
His Majesty will visit the United Nations Office at Nairobi, to learn more about the work of UN Habitat and the UN Environment Programme. UNON is the only UN Headquarters in the Commonwealth.
His Majesty will attend a technology showcase, meeting Kenyan entrepreneurs who are driving forward innovation in the country’s tech sector. Kenya has the third largest start up eco-system in Africa.
His Majesty will host a reception focussed on Kenya’s young people and future leaders across development, trade, media, the creative arts and environmental conservation.
Their Majesties will visit a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery, joining British and Kenyan military personnel in an act of Remembrance, before hearing about the Commission’s recent work to ensure all those who supported Britain’s efforts in both World Wars are commemorated.
The King and Queen will visit Nairobi National Park to witness the vital conservation work being undertaken by the Kenya Wildlife Service, which is integral to Kenya’s thriving tourism industry.
Her Majesty, Patron of the equine welfare charity Brooke, will hear how the charity is working with the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals to rescue donkeys at risk and promote their welfare.
The King, as Captain General of the Royal Marines, and The Queen, will visit Mtongwe Naval Base in Mombasa. There, Their Majesties will witness Kenyan Marines, trained by the Royal Marines, demonstrating a covert beach landing, showing defence collaboration in action.
The Queen will meet survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, learning how they are supported and sharing her own insights from working in this area.
The King will meet faith leaders from Mombasa’s diverse community, hearing how they are working together to promote harmony amongst the city’s population.

This weekend, members of the Royal Family of Wessex gathered at the newly refurbished Synklar Chapel for a private service of thanks. The annual The Fall Day of Thanks Service marks the end of the royal's calendar year. With the Queen soon to be departing for her country side retreat, Claremont House. Normally, services take place at the larger Winchester Cathedral, but this year the Royals have opted for a more private venue. The chapel itself, formally known as Royal Chapel of All Saints, was built the then Crown Prince William in 1762 for his Welsh bride, Princess Mary of Wales. The chapel would be a place for Mary to privately practice her faith, out of public eye. The Chapel was later transformed into a Peteran chapel under the couples son, George II, and continue to act as a Royal Peculiar, serving as an informal church for the inhabitants and staff of Woodstock Great Park. Today, services at the chapel are often attended by members of the West Saxon royal family with Crown Princess Elizabeth known to regularly worship at the church for reasons of privacy.
The Queen, accompanied by members of her family, arrived back at the Palace via carriages after traveling through Woodstock Park. As the procession entered the Palace grounds, the grandeur of the event was evident, with the royal carriages gliding smoothly past the lush scenery and into the regal courtyard. Prince Thomas was notably well behaved sitting in-between his older cousins as he takes part in his first official celebration. Senior members gather annual on the famous balcony for a public appearance and to view a military parade in the Queen's honor.
The Queen hosted a small reception following the public celebration. Attendees were family and invited guests. held in the Queen's Gallery, photographers were able to spot Princess Margaret. While the former wife of Crown Prince William did not join the royals on the balcony, she was extended an invitation to celebrate with the Royals, privately. Relations with Margaret and the family have continued to improve over the last few years, even after the Crown Prince's remarriage. As the mother of the second in line to the throne, the Margaret question, as palace insiders have phrased it, has plagued the royals since the messy divorce. Recently the palace announced that Margaret will serve as the chief Envoy to Chester on behalf of the Wessex government. The County of Chester being one of the territories that Crown Prince William will likely inherit from his father, after his death.
Following the changing of the guard ceremony, viewed by the Queen and three of her six grandchildren, (left to right) Prince Thomas, The Princess Royal, and Prince Patrick, the Queen will depart the Palace for Claremont House in which she will remain until the State Opening of the National Council.

52
5+2=7 (Lover is the 7th album)
“The only key is mine”
Mine was written in the key of G major. G is the 7th letter of the alphabet.
-> “I’m a G” Lil’ Keke 1/1/2007
-> G-Unit (1999-2022) -> “We Up” ft Kendrick Lamar 12/8/2014
52 weeks in a year (365=14 days in a year, unless its a leap year then there are 366=15)
52 cards in a deck (4 suits 13 cards to each suit. English poker format: Spades- Black, Clubs- Green, Hearts- Red, Diamonds- Blue.)
52 white keys on a keyboard (36 black keys, 88 total)
52 is Tellurium; Te (ET? Phone home.)
The first day of the zodiac year is the spring equinox, which is around March 21. The zodiac sign for this period is Aries, which is represented by the ram.
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac because it represents new beginnings. The Babylonians celebrated the rebirth of nature with an 11-day festival called Akitu, which took place in mid-March.
The exact time of the equinox varies each year because it takes Earth about 365.24 days to orbit the sun. The equinox usually occurs about six hours later each year, until a leap year resets it (2024 was a leap year)
3/21/2024 - 12/3/2024=
8 months and 12 days. (Reduced to 11 = 2)
*12/8 is the last night of the ET.
Long story short believe me or don’t. 8 songs have the lyric “game/games”

6th album- 2
5th album- 1
3rd album- 1
2nd album- 1
32111 is Candler Springs, FL, Marion county. Founded 3/14/1844. Silver Springs is here, what is it? Oh it’s just Florida’s 1st tourist destination since the mid 19th century, it was founded in 1852.
*Disney Springs opened on 3/22/1975 (1 day after 3/21… and The 1975 band formed in 2002 and released their album on 9/2/2013 -> i love the internet, their first show was on 11/2/2006 in Washington DC with Queens of the Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails) Disney Springs is on 120 acres, and has 4 distinct areas: marketplace, landing, town center, west side.
-Disney Springs had 4 names before the 5th stuck. During the 3rd name Disney World Market Place they opened a strip of entertainment venues and restaurants. This place had the right idea, but the wrong execution. Its name was Pleasure Island, apparently based off of Pinocchio. Its creation was to compete with Church Street Station which were both entertainment districts located in downtown Orlando, Florida, with the key difference being that Church Street Station was a pre-existing nightlife hub that inspired the creation of Disney's Pleasure Island, which aimed to offer a similar experience within the Walt Disney World resort complex, featuring multiple nightclubs and entertainment venues; however, Pleasure Island eventually closed its nightclubs in favor of more family-friendly options, unlike Church Street Station which continues to operate with a focus on nightlife entertainment… lol ok Big Red. You basically stole their idea for profit and couldn't make it last because you thought shopping centers were more important than music. It makes me wonder what shit went down here as well, did some of the problems start here?
**Pleasure Island had a NYE Kink. Every night Pleasure Island had a firework show to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Is this why every one was a shitty person, because their resolutions didn’t even last 24 hours. It makes sense. Also.. do you know how much other stuff you could have bought instead of those fireworks? Like thats a lot of fireworks. And it’s monotonous… I’m not a Debbie Downer, I just don’t enjoy them. Rock on firecrackers. Okay so Epic Fireworks is a company that supplies their fireworks. (They were feeling epic.) Disney is the world's second-largest buyer of explosives, spending over $50 million annually on fireworks. The tradition of fireworks at Disney parks began in 1956 (21..)
*the US Department of Defense is actually the #1 buyer of fireworks
*and Disney gets theirs from Epic Fireworks.... a UK company, 3 years after Elizabeth was named the Queen.
1/1/2007 pleasure island they changed their policy to 21 and Over. (Which Miles Teller was in that movie, he is in the IBYTAM music video. And 21 is ATW and the 21st letter is U)
**Pleasure Island closed on 9/27/2008- this is when they took all the music establishments out for a more family type venue that includes shopping and eating, America’s favorite past times.
*50 is a reference to Red
*21 is also a reference to Red

Just north of Toronto is Vaughan, a city in Ontario, CA. Canada's Wonderland, formerly known as Paramount Canada's Wonderland, is a 330-acre amusement park located in Vaughan, Ontario, a municipality within the Greater Toronto Area. Opened in 1981 by the Taft Broadcasting Company and the Great-West Life Assurance Company, it was the first major theme park in Canada and remains the country's largest. It opened on 5/23/1981. Its slogan is “For the fun of it ->”FUN” is a word TS and TN have both emphasized in speeches and tweets.
Former owners:

Add them all up and you’ll get 35. She turns 35 this December. And the gold desk calendar in the The Grove TTPD pop up had her birthday on it.
* Taking just the 20th and 21st centuries, the 13th of December is on a Friday in 1901, 1907, 1912, 1918, 1929, 1935, 1940, 1946, 1957, 1963, 1968, 1974, 1985, 1991, 1996, 2002, 2013, 2019, 2024, 2030, 2041, 2047, 2052, 2058, 2069, 2075, 2080, 2086 and 2097
2013- TS did not have a show on her birthday but she was in Australia, because on 12/14/2013 was N1/1 in Melbourne at Ethihad Stadium. An acoustic version of “You Belong With Me” was played in place of the surprise song (she did this for 7 shows)
*the ET in Melbourne (3 shows) she announced the bolter variant on 2/16/23 was when she played the first medley on 2/17/2023.
Her stop for Red in Toronto was 6/14/2013 and 6/15/2013. The Surprise songs were “Tim McGraw” and “Highway Don’t Care”
*12/13/2002 was a Friday. And also her 13th birthday. According to the TS wiki she spent the entire summer when she was 12 devoting it to writing a 350 page novel that has remained unpublished. (3+5=8) so it was the summer of 2002 that she wrote the book, the summer after 9/11.
*12/13/2019 (30th birthday. her first birthday performance?) Z100's iHeartRadio Jingle Ball 2019. “Blank Space" "Me!" "Lover" "Welcome to New York" "You Need to Calm Down" "Christmas Tree Farm" "Shake It Off”
*12/13/2030 TS will be turning 41. In the 73QWV she said she hopes she is not stressed when turning 40.

New Solar Fence Protects Rubirizi Villages from Wild Animal Attacks
(Rubirizi) – Leaders and residents of Bunyaruguru County in Rubirizi District are expressing relief as the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) completes a 14.5 kilometer solar-powered electric fence to keep wild animals from wandering into nearby villages. The fence, part of a broader initiative to protect communities around the Queen Elizabeth National Park, will serve six villages: Kyambura,…

There is an evacuation on still it is huge they're leaving rapidly the entire globe to the islands, even the West and it's true they're leaving their posts out there and leaving the cities and they're moving out very fast out of the west and south and they're moving out very fast to say something and we're going in very fast to say something I don't like it who cares our son says the last part then he says their dead. It's true too we are hitting them for what they're doing and saying and they're insane by the way this idiots don't have to die for what's there doing which is evacuating but they do and that's what's going on very much a spoiled pieces of s***.
-that's a huge number of them that are complaining their leadership are jerks they said they really are. The idiots are staying here and indefinitely they said and her son and daughter say probably not and they don't get it because they're really stupid and that's what their people mean. Now you don't want them staying here the others don't either and eventually they will force them out right now Florida is getting down to the bottom 1% houses 0.5% trailer park and 0.5% bivouac and the clearing people out of the woods and such now. All over Florida there's people in the woods and they're pulling them out. Our son and daughter see if those numbers are real they're not going to last here very much longer. And what we say is they seem to be in a hurry. I know there's nothing here to make them run that fast cuz they're really moving it so you're saying stuff and we're going there and grabbing them and others are moving fast due to that and it's 1% should shrink to nothing pretty soon. Thier really not smart enough to know that they should move fast.
-and today they met earlier and it's important because of devices and things and they're moving out and we are too. But more things are going to happen today in Charlotte county in these idiots are ready for they're going to begin rounding them up and pulling them in literally they're going too loud and grab them and take care of them there aren't any coming to the rescue they don't have any troops nearby and they don't have any hardware so they don't have fear about pulling them out they also can take them out before they get here and yeah there's a ring around Florida and they want to get rid of Tommy f and his shifts and they're calling about it in an organized fashion and we are too to move them the hell out permanently and it's beginning now is a huge effort and they are saved saying those that are way you'll be killed and they mean it it's going to be a hell of a day. Today is the first day that these idiots should notice being pulled in. But who knows they know they don't notice much some of them are leaving now from Charlotte county we have about 10%-15% getting ready to leave and once they leave nobody replaces them but other groups and others will leave too because they don't tolerate them there's a huge number of people trying to get here no but they still try from other parts of Florida and the grabs and it's not that many but they are stopped on the road to evacuation continues and there's probably 2% of the population is warlock and tonight it'll probably be 0.2% with these idiots looking at each other laughing and smiling like morons.
-The Exodus to get here McDonald's are halfway done today there's going to be a huge influx in these idiots will be out of here stand has moved 75% of his people here now it's only about 15% because he has to hold areas and one of them is New England and it's still the same percentage and he will be overrun by morlock shortly unless the empire holds them out then he'll be overrun by empire. There's other areas like that and for the most part his people will be overrun and he doesn't want to move here with his forces because McDonald's are here and they'll just destroy them. He is trying to find Queen Elizabeth the first and it said she's been here so he's checking Lily on occasion and at times it is her he was amazed he couldn't believe it I said it was grossed out but knew they were doing it. Biden has to evacuate everywhere. Of course you can't do that but he's bringing people from areas that are like New England which they expect to have really big problems in and the south is one of those areas that will it's going to be destroyed practically emptied and a bunch from there oh California is emptying now, they are retreating and vacating the premises and leaving behind practically everything the factories of Meghan Markle are going to stay she says and the next gay group can take it over. And Mac is talking thinks he's going to take it over yeah we have to have a presence and it's got our kind of area it's kind of remote they're leaving today they said and they're going to Australia. A whole bunch of them are leaving and California has probably 3% of the warlock 1.5% are up and getting ready to leave. And the miscellaneous group are also being chased out of everywhere so they're coming here and to California area and in droves it's partly why and more like her leaving. And they are just placing the remaining warlock here everybody force a lot of times except expect them to be out of here pretty soon one way or the other and they don't think so that's what Garth says and he is a complete moron. He gets hit and shrinks every other day and it's very stupid and was stupid before. And these groups are headed here from all over the world and we're taking territory and we're going to maintain it open Pennsylvania and New England the empire defenses no. They don't appear to be blocking the morlock entering either and it might be because Mac is still there halfway and he's moving out he's getting the hell out of there those people are leaving he's got apartments on barges and they've been going up and down already about a million apartments no but there's a lot he put it about 5,000 and where do we get now mostly in Northern Florida. Yes. And they're taking over the university is up there and kicking the idiots out and using it as housing for now and Orlando too they're using all the hotels and they booted the idiots there's a few huge campgrounds and then taking those over and expanding though and they're almost at Maximum so they're moving apartments down and they're going to renovate these quickly probably while they're in them they're moving to do all this today and we are too we're getting our pads ready we have 300 pads just outside of Charlotte county and it's not within a ring no I guess it is and Mac has about 400 and we're going to keep them out of there there's also about 700 we start getting ready in fort Myers once the idiots move their hardware out the rest of them are evacuating and we're going to remove neighborhoods that's all swill and we'll probably start today everyone's giving these orders it's an emergency huge numbers of machines are coming down giant tractors and giant dozers and it also ordered to take out the small ships so there will be able to settling and we wont get flooded,
And as we said there going to push to get these flagships out very hard in order to get them out and it's a goal yes
There's a couple more things happening we're going to publish because they're messing with the computer again

Clotted Cream and Rant Reunions: A Letter to The Midwest
Behind posts, articles, conferences and social media, there’s a backstory. Have you kept up with the digital correspondence between Ranters Scott Beuerlein and Marianne Willburn? You can start here, or go back and find the entire correspondence at Dear Gardener.
Lovettsville, VA
June 29, 2023
Dear Scott,
If you saw the state of my office and house right now, you’d stop endlessly complaining on Facebook about needing a personal assistant, and feel pretty damned good about the chaos swirling around you.
When it comes to my personal account, I can’t call myself a ‘Facebook User’ as much as a ‘Facebook Lurker,’ which is why I didn’t comment on that particular moan. Also, the last time I dared to comment on one of your posts, the Meta Gods said my remark violated their community standards and logged one black mark against an otherwise sterling social credit score, which is probably now globally matched to my retinal scan thanks to Heathrow Airport and OpenAI. Granted, I do want to violate some sort of standard at least once before I die – but over something a lot juicer than witticisms on your latest ear infection.
I have owed you a letter for some time; but I did tell you to take my last apology for the same offense with a grain of salt. I’ve been abroad to visit friends in the UK and meet Anne and Charles for the first time, scout gardens for guided tours next year, drink copiously, and eat a lot of clotted cream.
A lot of clotted cream. As in, Cream on Cream (community standards be damned). And gin on gin. And wine on wine. And such good wine. In such beautiful settings. I believe there was also some champagne involved at one point. Two points. And the cream of course.
I ate that. I ate that and I would eat it again. Clotted cream on cheesecake with a pot of ice cream to wash it all down. Berries were for included for reasons of health.
Which means that I got back home and went on a masochistic diet at precisely the same time I had to face a mountain of work and cope with a flare of up of the chronic Lyme disease that hangs out in my body waiting for me to abuse my immune system. For abuse my immune system I did – admirably. (See above.)
Not the brightest idea, but I’ve had worse. Disavowing clotted cream wasn’t an issue as we can’t get anything approaching it here – hell, our heavy cream is thinner than the stuff they give to stray cats in Cornwall – but not to have a fine glass of red while watching the sun go down after a day slinging dirt and words – yes, that stung.
The letter I started to write to you mid-crash diet tasted mildly of bitterness and self-recrimination; but now that I have decided that fourteen days is quite enough, and my immune system is slowly shifting into gear, things are looking up. I think I’ll have a modest glass tonight.
The UK has been having the same drought conditions that we are both experiencing in our corners of the US – and hose pipe bans were in effect in several counties – probably all of them by this point. I drove just under a thousand miles, the classical strains of Radio 3 calming the nerves at left-entry roundabouts and right turns. I still have my UK driving license, but it takes a few days to remember the feel of a gear shift in the left hand.
The hawthorns and rhododendrons were off the charts in both Wales and Cornwall. Simply glorious. After a quick night in London and a walk around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Gardens with Dixter symposium buddy Adam Stolter, I stayed with an old friend in mid- Wales and visited Hergest Croft Gardens in Herefordshire. I simply couldn’t believe how magnificent the rhodos were. We wandered through forests of them until we came across a pond filled with the lush foliage of skunk cabbage and gunnera – reminding me that I’ve got to get some skunk cabbage started here.
Lysichiton americanus (Western skunk cabbage) at Trebah Gardens in Cornwall. I love both the Eastern and the Western skunk cabbage, so it is ridiculous I don’t have it in a moist part of the garden. It’s invasive in the UK.
When you’re not all that into rhodos (and I’m not – they hate my soil), and you find yourself struck dumb (in my case that’s a feat in itself), they’ve got to be pretty good.
There were some gorgeous colors, but I was smitten by this white rhodo at absolute peak.
Rhodos, gunnera and ferns in a garden that leads down to the sea… Trebah Gardens in Falmouth
And then closer toward the English border to Anne and Charles in Chepstow and their fascinating garden The Veddw, where we sat and ate moreish chunks of cheese and fourteen cups of strong tea, and every five minutes or so, exclaimed “THAT would make a great Rant.” The cheese is the other reason for the crash diet. And the fish and chips that Charles pre-ordered from their local chippy that night. It turned out to be one of four I would eat over the next two weeks.
Anne and Charles and the scene of much chatter.
What a joy to meet them both and compare garden writing, garden photography and the horticultural industry in general, in both countries. And discuss the challenges they had in creating what is an excellent, compelling garden. A garden that – no surprise here – makes you think. The little railway carriage that Charles renovated up for guests (paying or otherwise!) is uniquely wonderful.
The next day, Anne and I visited the nearby Wye Valley Sculpture Garden and sat at the top of it by an odd little reflecting pool, looking out towards the ruins of Tintern Abbey of Wordsworth fame. We breathed in the thick scent of a nearby Philadelphus and discussed the tricky balance of writing, and speaking, and touring, and, perhaps most importantly, finding a good amount of time to work (and learn!) in one’s garden. Which is, after all, the point. And then a slap-up meal in England 10 minutes away, across the Severn Bridge. Charles’ new Volvo has bendy headlights that anticipated the curves on the dark ride home. Very cool.
That is the other reason my letter is so late – that “finding a good amount of time to work in one’s garden” thing. Ten acres of one’s garden to be exact. I played hooky throughout the month of May, pretending that I didn’t need to do a thousand things at my desk, from website work to tour planning to a new book project, and just stayed outside.
This is the type of stuff I want more time to do – showcasing some of what’s blooming in the garden during each week of the season. Kira does a beautiful job of this for you at the Zoo, but I’ll skip the plant tags for time’s sake.
I got all the tender plants in, pruned shrubs in new and interesting ways, staked perennials in boring but necessary ways, and weeded late into the nights. And then I took a deep breath, and rolled up the black fabric holding back the weeds in the kitchen garden, and explained the plan for the raised beds to Michael with the hopes that he might, possibly, slap a bed or two together while I was gone. I had hoped to finish this renovation three years ago, but there is only so much time and we are stretched thin.
He did more than slap one together it turns out. He took all that Marine Corps toxic masculinity and directed it at that space – building all ten beds and spreading the stone dust I’d conveniently and evilly had delivered before I left. It looks fantastic, but we still need to fill the beds, build the cold frames, the gathering platform, and the compost dividers, spread pea gravel, install electricity in the greenhouse, and, of course, plant up the beds. Still, this is a major, MAJOR, hurdle accomplished. I am very grateful. He is very sore. Here’s a quick video.
(Now THAT’s something we couldn’t have put into the letters of yesteryear!)
I’d go into further rapturous details over the gardens I saw in Cornwall, the Burgundy I consumed, the conversations I subsequently had, and the walks I took over moorland and coastal cliff, but it would only make you envious and sulky. So I won’t.
Looking out over Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Blossoming hawthorns blown sideways from prevailing winds.
A bouquet I made celebrating the wildness and beauty of Cornwall.
The Lily Pond at Cothele House and Garden.
The subtropical vibe of Cornish Gardens is strong, and provided by that lovely Gulf Stream we waft over their way….
A maze in the valley at Glendurgan.
But I will just add that on my way back toward London and several gardens therein, I spent a full day at RHS Wisley – which was fantastic as always. They’ve opened up a new Science Center, Library and three new gardens as of 2021, and my day ended on the highest of notes when I found Tropical Plants and How to Love Them in their beautiful new reference library. Obviously an excuse for a celebratory glass of Prosecco and a pot of mint chocolate chip ice cream in the café that looks out upon the Glasshouse Landscape designed by Tom Stuart-Smith.
Man I earned this diet.
The old laboratory at RHS Wisley. You need one of these at the Zoo. Full disclosure, my book wasn’t in this beautiful building.
But it was in here…
Definitely worth a pot of mint chocolate chip ice cream.
The main borders at Wisley were almost completely empty by the end of a long hot day. Result.
On the home front, I hear you got Hans Hansen to speak at the Zoo’s upcoming Plant Trials Symposium during one of his busiest months. Well done. He did say last year that you were a charmer. That’s one word for it. I’m going to try my best to get out for it – what fun we had last year!
You have been busy – very busy – as I see in my capacity as a FB Lurker. Please rest assured that I wasn’t bitter over you speaking to the 1000+ audience members of the International Master Gardener’s Conference in Kansas City, as I can only assume they must have misplaced my speaker sheet in the frantic booking process and were forced to seek an easily available option.
Don’t they know I’ve got a book in Wisley’s library? I trust you ensured they had all my details for next year. Good man.
Yours,
Marianne
P.S. In my lurking I discovered you have been reverting to vodka with your tonic. Have I taught you nothing? Vodka is for starting land wars in Europe, not holding intelligent conversations with Michele after a long day. That’s a job for gin.

Anne Bonny - My SC/Irish Pride
I said in my last post that I had intended to post about Queen Elizabeth. I was about to go ahead and begin writing it out. But, considering it is also Irish heritage month, I think my ancestors would be turning in their graves if I wrote about the Irish-colonizer queen during this month. I proudly talk about two aspects of my heritage – my Irish side and Mexican side. I also will say (with bittersweet feelings) that I hail from the Palmetto State – South Carolina. So it makes sense that I talk about one of my favorite badass Irish women – Anne Bonny. Now, this blog is no stranger to pirates - we’ve talked about Ching Shih, one of the most impressive pirates in my opinion. But, I think I’d consider Anne Bonny my favorite pirate. She’s an absolute badass, and I think she deserves more attention than she gets!
Anne Cormac was born around 1698 in county Cork, Ireland. (a beautiful place I’ve gotten to visit!) She was the daughter of William Cormac and his maidservant, Mary Brennan. Understandably, Cormac’s wife wasn’t too happy about this baby and left, taking her financial help with her. Cormac would raise Anne as a boy for a while so she could work to support her family until they finally had to leave for Charleston to try and seek a new life.
Mary Brennan would die when Anne was about 12, terribly distressing her. Perhaps this would add to her anger and her fight. She was a known spitfire and rebel. There’s a story about how she stabbed a maid with a carving knife for some slight and beat a boy who tried to assault her but take this with a grain of salt because I couldn't find much verification.
Cormac tried to marry Anne off to someone of good standing, but continuing her role as a rebel and troublemaker, she ran off to elope the penniless sailor, John Bonny, causing her to be disowned by her father. One of my sources even says there’s a belief that she may have burnt her father’s plantation. Metal.
Anne and her new husband ran away to the Bahamas and lived on the island of New Providence. There, John continued to work as a sailor and report pirates to the governor of the Bahamas, Woodes Rogers. Anne and John didn’t remain married for long, though, and eventually would run away with “Calico Jack” Rackham. John would refuse Jack’s attempt to pay him to divorce Anne, but the two would still run away together on Jack’s the “William” (for some reason, the National Park Service claims it to be the “Revenge”, but every other source says “William”). (Poor John got the short end of that stick) Anne and Jack would go to Cuba where Anne could have and leave behind their baby and went off to live a notorious life of piracy.
By 1720, Anne would become well-known under the alias Ann Fulford and even written about in the Boston Gazette. The article describes Anne, Jack, their 12 male pirates, and another woman pirate, Mary Read, who we’ll also discuss in this blog. The crew was notorious and robbed many ships. Anne and Mary were known for dressing as men, fighting fiercely, and even urging their crewmates to be more vicious.
The ship would be ambushed on the coast of Jamaica by one of Rogers’ ships. Anne and Mary were the only ones that fought for their ship and crew as the men were too drunk/frightened to fight. Of course, the two women and the rest of the crew were arrested and sent to Spanish Town, Jamaica for their trial. Rackham and his men were hanged and reportedly as he passed Anne, she told him, “I’m sorry to see you like this, but if you had fought like a man, then you need not be hanged like a dog.” While this should be taken with a grain of salt because there’s a lot of falsehood around Anne’s life, I like to believe she said this. It certainly wouldn't be out of character!
Read would die in jail and Anne would be released because she was pregnant. She would return to Charleston where she would get married again, have children, and die rather peacefully at 84.
There is a lot of falsehoods about Anne’s life that have lingered because of books written about her life. Many of those beliefs came without any real sources and some of those beliefs have definitely lingered. Nonetheless, she still had a very cool life! While she wasn’t as infamous as Ching Shih, she’s still quite well-known! She’s noted in both Charleston and Ireland because of her connections to both. Anne and Mary were both a rare pair as pirate women, but they sure as hell weren’t going to let that stop them! Now, go forth, my little pirates, and take on the world with the fierceness of Anne Bonny!
