Mini-review:

Man, I don't really know what to say about this movie. It starts off quite well, as a pretty sensitive and intimate representation of late adolescence and early adulthood. But then it goes completely off the rails during the final 40 minutes or so. For starters, it suddenly hits you with a couple of disturbing twists that don't even fit with the tone. And after that, it drops the initial story entirely and focuses on a bunch of new characters for the last 20 minutes. I'm sure it's supposed to mean something, but I didn't get it at all. That being said, Noée Abita and Théodore Pellerin turn in two beautiful, nuanced performances. All in all, Genesis ended up being rather disappointing.

French Girl (aka Chez les beaux-parents, dir. James A. Woods & Nicolas Wright).

It's hard to believe they made Vanessa Hudgens, playing a sexy but devilish lesbian ex-lover, so much more unlikeable than the goofy Zach Braff as the doting boyfriend in a French-Canadian bisexual love triangle. There's ample charm in the Quebec City-set (by way of Brooklyn) romantic comedy starring recognizable American actors, but the obvious cracks in the central relationship more than show doubts about the romance we're supposed to be invested in.
