Sorry to bother with my maple tree questions (again), but I was just wondering what books you’d recommend for me to become more familiar with England’s tree ecology? 👀 i… I feel rather silly having to look up “do maple trees / apple trees / insert plant life here exist in northern England” every time I want to talk about the spring flowers :;

But also if I don’t describe the native plant life changing then what am I to write about in the heavy silence that follows awkward questions I just gotta talk about the whirlybird seeds falling a hair too early for the season or I’ll turn into a puddle

A really good intro to the types of flora you'll see in England can be found by visiting Woodlandtrust.org.uk! They do education on woodlands specifically, so I use them a lot when I'm writing about ThunderClan territory.

From there, I take a tree they're talking about and try to read more about it, then use iNaturalist to confirm if it's in my modeled region. There are also times I work backwards, using iNaturalist to browse the sorts of trees and flowers that exist here and learning more about how they got there, and if the cats would have it in their territory.

For the non-woodland biomes, I find Wildlifetrusts.org helpful sometimes. Sadly though, this site is not nearly as well managed as Woodland Trust and there's some dead links, so I find that researching rivers, moorland, and bogs is harder.

I think I've got forest ecology research down to a good science, but the other biomes, I have to tap into my search engine skills. It's probably a symptom of how non-forest biomes kinda tend to get neglected by casual conservationists. LOVE YOUR LOCAL WETLAND, GOD DAMN IT

Subclans that I have in my head but just haven't made yet because I need like three lair expansions first:

-A subclan of Beastclan and Dragons that do horse races. The Beastclans are the Jockeys and the Dragons are the mounts. The dragons don't mind this because they're paid really handsomely. There's a whole bunch of different types of races (Based on size, flight ability, average speed, fighting allowed/disallowed, etc). They race all around Sornieth and the dragons have really hilarious racing names that are agreed upon with their Beastclan partner. (Taking from the PEI racer's names I witnessed recently, things like "Somewhere Fancy", "Proven Lover", "The Rev", "My Man Charley", and "Roll Withitharry"). Horse Girl drama, but it's with dragons and Beastclan! Saucy!

-The Subclan lead by a personal dragon called Ram-O-Tan. He's named after the family ship! (We had a family ship back in the day when my family was bringing bread back and forth to PEI from the mainland). A bunch of mysterious sea-going dragons that take from various ocean-related mythos and a lil mix of family history. I have two right now- Navigator and Ram-O-Tan himself! But I have many stories from my family ranging from rumrunning during prohibition to more benign things like shipping food to an otherwise-isolated PEI in the winter before the bridge was finished

The other big clue about the 1700 Cascadia quake, aside from that tsunami, was something called a "ghost forest" - a collection of dead tree stumps all killed at once by inundation with salt water when the land dropped by six feet all at once. Tree ring analysis in comparison with trees still living nearby dated the earthquake to sometime around 1699 or 1700, which matched up with that "orphan tsunami"!

I was actually writing something about them first getting fostered by the Curtises recently! I should pick that wip back up tbh. I'm gonna put this under the cut bc my response got kinda long!

I think the Elrics' origin is pretty similar to canon -- their dad left when they were really young and they don't know why, and their mom died of an illness not long after. The Rockbells took them in for a while bc their families were close, but after Winry's parents died, it was just Pinako taking care of three children, and she's just one old lady, so they ended up in foster care

Sig is the one who suggested becoming foster parents, since they couldn't have kids of their own but they both really wanted to be parents. Izumi was hesitant at first, but eventually agreed. The Elrics were probably around eight and nine? And they ended up staying with the Curtises p much until they turn eighteen (I'm tempted to say the Curtises officially adopt them)

Sig adores these boys. Izumi does too, but she's the Tough One, she's willing to play bad cop. On the McDonald's alignment chart, she's the one who drives up to order a black coffee, meanwhile he's the one to actually buy the boys Happy Meals. Sig might look big and scary but he's really a huge softy and he loves his foster sons a lot :')

As for Ed being trans, it went over pretty easy with the Curtises! Actually, here's an excerpt from that wip:

The brothers probably were considered a problem case by the foster system, but the Curtises Do Not Care. Ed being trans is the least of their concerns. Once puberty starts creeping on the horizon, they help him figure out hormones, and they make sure his schools respect his name or else they will face the wrath of Izumi Curtis, and no one wants to face her wrath
