Here’s a drawing I spent a little less time on cause I wanted it out quicker to explain Lang’s lore. Btw does anyone have tips for drawing hands.
Undertale gold au and Rover belong to @s0ckh3adstudios and knowing what she’s written beforehand helps in context for this story.
Also Tw for neglect, bullying, and violence that is at least sort of talked about.
Enjoy my word babbles!
Lang only recently moved into the town near Mt Ebott and they were really lonely and isolated. Their parents were pretty negligent of them and they had a hard time speaking and communicating with others. (I’m trying to write they have aphasia or some other type of disability, need to do more research though)
The only way Lang could talk to others was through their notebooks but because of language barriers and their tendency to scare other kids off little progress was made. So when they ran to the mountain to get away from bullies, Lang decided to go higher and talk to the monsters they had read about in books.
They reached the top and fell down, and from there Lang tried to mess around with the meta of Undertale. They tried to give themselves the ability to create dialogue boxes and talk the way monsters do, through written sentences in video games. Due to their lack of determination or possibly Tores influence however, they were unable to create a perfect box.
So when they tried using ACTS to talk, Lang’s words were extremely messy and jumbled and actively scared monsters away in the process. Feeling rejected by both humans and monsters Lang wanted to leave.
But as they stumbled through the darkness of the ruins to the snowy area, their anger began to rise as more monsters fled from them. They actively barked and screamed tand eventually they tried climbing a tree with their perseverance powers in the hope of reaching the underground ceiling.
They fell down for the second time that day and survived only with their invincibility. When they awoke their notebook was gone and Lang was pissed.
Racing through the snow, their SOUL beat with purple and actively created a ton of damage in their wake. Lang’s chase eventually lead them to Snowdin where the group of monsters who stole Lang’s notebook had given it to Rover.
Lang lunged forward, knocking out Axis for a couple seconds and scaring off the monsters. In their fury they prepared to attack Rover but only found the monsters apologetic expression.
This snapped them out of their rage and Lang finally tried saying what was on their mind- tried apologizing. But it was too late as adult monsters came to see a human had entered their home. So Lang grabbed their notebook and Rover’s hat by accident and made a break for it.
They ran to waterfall where they were cornered by Axis, but quickly beat them with raw anguish and threw the robot over a waterfall. Lang then only stumbled further ahead until they reached a dead end.
Feeling nothing but guilt for their actions, Lang chose to write one last message in their notebook before they were cornered by Dalv. One lightning strike was enough and Lang didn’t fight back. They let it happen, let themselves rest.
(Until Dalv and Chujin revived Lang and ended up pissing them off ten times more)
Anyway, tell me anything about the lore I’ve written since there is a possibility it might change. If you have any questions just ask in notes too.
Random notes!
-Lang talks in a weird way, since they use ACTS and dialogue boxes. They don’t open their mouth and instead sentences from them look like this
“Lang asks why monsters are underground”
“Lang agrees to the plan ”
“Lang explains that they are tired of people’s shit”
-Lang is Chinese and they also know English, sign language, morse code, and wing dings for shits and giggles.
-Lang is a very blunt kid, but they are genuinely polite and caring to those around them. Their emotions just tend to get the better of them though.
-They love comic books and comic strips, and they specifically talk just about them

45. Andre Norton - Quag Keep (1978)
Tumblr media
D&D novels would be an ubiquitous and important part of the whole world building of the various settings with novel series like those set in the Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms setting selling millions upon millions of copies. In 1978, 4 years into the appearance of the game things were a little different and they would continue to be so until 1984's Dragons of Autumn Twilight which really kicked off in earnest the hundreds of D&D novels to come.
Tumblr media
Before that happened we would still have fiction in the shape of the Endless Adventure gamebooks which would appear in the early 80s and before all of that, this book. Quag Keep by Andre Norton (real name Alice Mary Norton) is set in the Greyhawk setting, and it starts off in the city of Greyhawk as adventurers come together to understand what the hell is happening to them. They are all suffering from a sort of amnesia and glimpses of another world (out world), they also have these kinds of charm bracelets with polyhedral dice... what is going on?
Tumblr media
Unusually for D&D novels this mixes our world with the world of the game, and it's a pretty fun read, most of it is a road trip as adventurers try to reach the titular Quag Keep to destroy the cause of their planar dislocation. Andre Norton is a good writer and there are a couple of cool references to Greyhawk elements, I particularly liked a mention of the Frog Temple from the Blackmoor supplement. Worth a read, more as a curiosity than anything, but still entertaining.

Hey Frank, can you tell something about yourself? - Hm... Well... I don't know if I can. I will try. My name is Franklin. I'm 18. I'm the traveler of this place called 'Lands of the Monsters'. was born in the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland, in the Liverpool town. I have been grown by an old hunter, Michael Wood. I can't tell something about my childhood, I can't even remember it. But all I remember - I was rich. One day I went on a journey on ship. I was not alone, there were some other children with me. Father gave me his coat with words 'I hope it will help you'. The ship was wrecked on the island which was not drawn on the map. Someone had survived. We built some kind of a village near to the forest, we were waiting for help, maybe we can went back. I took a step into the forest. No one tried to stop me… I walked to the Ice Wastelands and Sans and Papyrus have found me. After that they told me about my real name and my real father…
In what you are good at? - I am good at many things, I can't name only one ore two. I'm good at fighting, writing, forging. I have a perfect body which can do anything, so I always helping other with anything.
Where you were? - Hmph, I cannot remember where I wasn't… I was in 'the Forest of Horror' as I call it. There I always took some edible fruits, meat, wood for home and other things. I was it 'the Desert of Greed'. There are some people, marauders, disgusting scum, taking all they can find in these desert, killing everyone they can find. I am fighting with them a lot when I going to this place. Ice Wastelands… There is my home. I am helping Sans and Papyrus, the last one is really a good fighter, but he always disavows it. The quag near to us is a big problem I must say, it is wet and cold, but… The Dreemorse… The Capital of the Monsters Kingdom. The Dreemorse Town is really scary… I… I do not want to go there. I have heard there is a lot of hungry undead monsters. I… I do not want to be their victual on their repast. Or worse, their 'Princess's' repast…
What's your greatest desire? - My greatest desire is to destroy the Hell Fire. It has taken all the kingdom, it has killed all the Dreemurrs, it has destroyed all these great places, turned it all into the ashes. I just want to know that I can continue my father's cause. I am the royal heir and I must do anything to make this kingdom great again. Even if all hope is lost…

What can I say... except that I’m feeling defeated amidst the storm of eugenic gaslighting and COVID minimization constantly swirling around us. It is a dark time to be in public health, but it’s even more devastating when your own field turns against its own alleged values. Pixel Invaders - NHL pixel art graphic inspired by the old Space Invaders video game. I had done the entire league as pixelated logos and my co-worker Quags had done the top type treatment for another graphic previously. I combined the two concepts into a conference focused homage to Space Invaders. I came up with some pixelated goals to use as blockers plus some pucks to fire up at the opposing teams. So as Tupac said in Juice, “Pop two quarters in, pop tart, and let's get this game on!”

Venture into the enigmatic and treacherous realm of Wormwood with "The Finisher," a novel by David Baldacci that defies the norms of young adult literature and plunges readers into a shadowy world brimming with mysteries and dangers. Baldacci, traditionally known for his gripping adult thrillers, transitions into the YA genre with a masterful blend of fantasy and suspense, proving his versatility and ability to captivate audiences across different age groups. This book review delves into the heart of Wormwood, unraveling the tale of Vega Jane, a fearless and determined heroine, whose journey beckons readers to question the very nature of their reality, pushing the boundaries of their imagination. "The Finisher" emerges as more than just a tale of adventure; it is a clarion call to challenge the status quo, to think critically and to dare to seek truths hidden beneath layers of lies and deception. As Vega Jane confronts the perils that lie beyond the Quag, a forbidden territory teeming with monstrous creatures and untold secrets, the book addresses the essential quest for knowledge and self-discovery. In this review, we explore how Baldacci's artful narrative not only provides a gripping read but also tackles problems of conformity, censorship, and the power of knowledge, making the book a significant beacon for young readers navigating their way through the complexities of adolescence and the wider world. Plot The plot of "The Finisher" revolves around a young girl named Vega Jane, who lives in the village of Wormwood trapped by a dangerous, enchanted forest known as the Quag. The citizens of Wormyp are told from birth that there is nothing outside the Quag. However, Vega's life changes when she witnesses a peer, Quentin Herms, fleeing into the forbidden forest, an act that sets off a chain of events forcing her to question everything she has been taught. Vega stumbles upon a secret map and a mysterious message from Quentin, which thrust her into a quest for the truth. As she embarks on her journey, she discovers magical objects, faces terrifying beasts, and unravels the mysteries of Wormwood’s past. The plot is tightly woven, with unexpected twists and reveals, showcasing Vega’s growth from a naive worker at the Stacks to a courageous and resourceful heroine who refuses to accept the status quo. Characters Vega Jane, the protagonist, is a strong and fiercely independent character. Her loyalty to her family and friends, and her insatiable curiosity make her relatable and engaging. She is complemented by a cast of characters each with their own quirks and backgrounds, adding depth to the story. Delph, Vega's best friend, stands out with his quiet strength and steadfast support; he is the perfect foil to Vega’s fiery personality. Meanwhile, the antagonist, Thansius, serves as the face of the oppressive governing body, portraying the typical traits of a politician manipulating the truth to maintain control. The characters in "The Finisher" are well-developed, each carrying their own secrets and playing crucial roles in Vega’s life and her journey to unveil the truth. Writing Style David Baldacci's writing style in "The Finisher" maintains a fast pace, which keeps readers engaged throughout the book. His language is straightforward yet descriptive, painting a vivid picture of Vega Jane's world. Baldacci employs a unique vocabulary created for the story, which includes fantastical terms that add flavor to the environment of Wormwood – words like "wugg" for a dog and "sliver" for a slice. This inventive use of language immerses the reader in an entirely new world, though it might require some adjustment. Additionally, the narrative approach is adept at revealing just enough to maintain mystery and suspense, ensuring that readers remain hooked, eager to unravel the next secret along with Vega Jane. Setting The setting of "The Finisher" is particularly noteworthy. The village of Wormwood is a character in itself, with the ominous and impenetrable Quag surrounding it.
Baldacci crafts a world that feels both familiar and fantastical with its medieval-like environment – shops, a central council, and a square for community gatherings. However, the addition of magical creatures, the existence of forbidden knowledge, and the use of magic adds a layer of the extraordinary. The Quag, a vast and treacherous forest filled with monsters and illusions, contrasts sharply with the mundane and controlled life within the confines of Wormwood. This dichotomy serves to emphasize the theme of the unknown versus the familiar, and the inherent human desire to explore and challenge boundaries. Unique Aspects One unique aspect of "The Finisher" is the level of detail Baldacci invests in crafting the society's lore and the intricacies of its functioning. He constructs not just a new language but also various customs, a complete history, and even sports - notably, a brutal competition called The Duelum, which Vega participates in, showcasing her resilience and athleticism. Furthermore, the book explores complex themes such as the nature of freedom, the use of power, and the importance of questioning authority, which add layers of philosophical depth to a compelling adventure story. Lastly, the narrative's empowerment of a female lead in a genre that has historically been dominated by male protagonists is refreshing, as it offers a narrative of courage and self-discovery for young readers to admire and emulate. Character Development Characters are well-rounded and evolve throughout the book, making the experience relatable and immersive. Creative World-Building The imaginary setting is rich and vividly described, allowing readers to visualize and escape into the book's world. Positive Themes It promotes themes like courage and friendship, which can have a positive effect on readers' perspectives. Language and Style The author's writing style is accessible and engaging, which can cater to a wide audience, including young adults. Cons of The Finisher Book Review Pace Issues Some readers may find the pacing inconsistent, with some parts dragging, which might affect their reading experience. Complex Terminology The use of invented terms can be confusing, creating a barrier for some readers and detracting from their engagement. Unresolved Questions The book leaves several questions unanswered, which might be frustrating for readers who prefer closure in the narratives they engage with. Expectations from Author Readers with high expectations from the author may feel disappointed if the book doesn't meet their preconceived notions of quality. Genre-Specific Appeal The book's appeal might be limited to fans of the fantasy genre, which can limit its reach to a broader audience. ``` Understanding The Genre and Author When considering the purchase of 'The Finisher' or similar titles, it's important to take into account the genre and the author's track record. Week 2 - QUTAM / QUAG visit
QUT Art Museum
Exhibition 20 June - 1 October 2023
Troy-Anthony Baylis: I wanna be adorned Alice Lang: Flowah Powah
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was pleased to discover these two artists in this exhibition at the QUT Art Museum. Troy-Anthony Baylis: I wanna be adorned and Alice Lang: Flowah Powah captivated me with their vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and playful humouric forms. Both artists use textiles, beads, sequins, and other materials to create dazzling pieces that reflect their personal histories and influences. I was drawn to Baylis's work because he explored Aboriginal and queer identities and how he challenges stereotypes and celebrates diversity. His use of flags, banners, and costumes as symbols of pride and resistance was translated into his identity as a queer person of color. I also admired Lang's work because she used retro flowers to represent femininity, sexuality, and power. Her sculptures and installations are whimsical and provocative, inviting the viewer to question the norms and expectations of gender and beauty. Her work also references her Asian-Australian heritage and the hybridity of cultures in a globalized world. Both artists inspired me to think about my own identity and how I can express it creatively and confidently through art.
Giffith University Gallery
Exhibition 15 June - 2 September
Chantal Fraser: The Ascended
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chantal Fraser - a contemporary artist who explores the themes of identity, culture, and belonging through her artworks. By using various materials and techniques, such as textiles, beads, and body adornments, she creates installations and performances that challenge the stereotypes and assumptions about her Samoan heritage.
In one of her artworks, 'The Ascended,' she uses colorful garments and fabrics to contrast the human figures and the white background. She explores the themes of identity, culture, and spirituality playfully and provocatively. I was inspired by her use of materials, colors, and shapes to create a visual impact and a sense of movement. This contrast with decorative embellishments over the industrial armor creates even more thought-provoking attention. I also admired her ability to challenge the viewers' stereotypes and expectations and invite them to question their assumptions and prejudices, especially seen in her video works displayed on oversized screens in the QCA gallery. Her works are powerful and engaging, giving the viewers a strong sense of her loud visual voice for cultural and social equality.

Dalila Mallor - The Recluse
Tumblr media
Dalila Mallor is an old and reclusive witch who lives in a small hut at the edge of the Pilbalt Quag, a dark and foreboding swamp that few dare to venture into. She is known to the locals as a wise woman, a healer, and a seer, but to others, she is a feared and mysterious figure.
Dalila was born into a family of powerful witches, and she inherited their knowledge and skills at a young age. She quickly surpassed her teachers in her mastery of the dark arts, and soon became one of the most powerful witches in the land.
For many years, Dalila used her powers for good, helping those in need and curing the sick. But as she grew older, her demeanor grew darker, and she began to delve deeper into the darker and more dangerous aspects of magic.
Now, Dalila is a feared and reviled figure, shunned by most and feared by all. Her hut at the edge of the Pilbalt Quag is said to be filled with strange and arcane objects, and the air around it crackles with the energy of her spells.
Despite her fearsome reputation, however, Dalila is not entirely without compassion. She is known to occasionally help those in need, but only if it suits her own dark purposes. Her powers are vast and varied, and she is skilled in a wide range of magic techniques, including divination, spellcasting, and necromancy.
Dalila's presence at the edge of the Pilbalt Quag is a source of unease and danger for those who venture into the swamp. Her powers are said to be at their strongest there, and many have gone missing in the murky depths of the swamp, never to be seen again.
Dalila Mallor is a complex and enigmatic figure, a powerful witch with a dark and mysterious past, whose powers and reputation continue to inspire fear and wonder in equal measure.
