Ever since you could remember, you were a pawn to the Court of Owls. Well, you’d be more accurately described as a knight. You weren’t like their other soldiers, you were trained to be more. You weren’t an Owl, and maybe that’s what truly set you apart from them.

You were the Falcon. Perfect, pretty, and prized. Flaunted as the most efficient weapon there may be. You weren’t meant to be hidden within the Court, for everyone gawked at you at meetings and parties as you observed behind your unique mask.

A trained spy and killer, an assassin who answers to their masters without question. And if you were to have one, you shouldn’t expect a good answer. But you were good at what you did, it was all you ever knew. You were taken care of. But it was all you’ve ever known…

Now you sat across from the Batman, who gave you the answers you sought out in exchange for his life, although he was certainly a formidable opponent, you started having your own doubts of your capabilities when you faced off with him, before a draw was called for this.

“You…you shouldn’t be associating with them. The Court isn’t looking out for your best interests.” The Batman explained to you like you were a child, knowing full-well that you were much too mature for a tone like that.

“They are all I know. I may not know much, but I know when someone is speaking to me like I’m stupid.” You countered, growing increasingly agitated, but there was a fizzle of sorrow in the back of your throat. “I have always done as I’m told, it’s why they hold me to such a high standard.”

“Then why are you talking it out with your target?” Batman questioned. He could see your eyes from behind the mask just shimmer a bit as tears fought to spill, but you still had some control over said emotions. “You have lived in a cage your entire life, depending on monsters to keep you fed as long as you do their bidding, no matter how gruesome or immoral.”

“I don’t have morals, that’s what made me their top agent.” You snapped back, aching to just cave and agree with him, but it’d go against everything you’ve ever been taught. You looked through this narrow lens all of your short life, right and wrong being dictated by people hiding behind owl masks, feeling superior to all of Gotham, instilling their will no matter who it affects and how.

“You are a child. Not a Falcon. You have been robbed of a lifetime of education and experience that should have given you morals, taught you about the world.” Batman himself started to feel personally about the subject. “No child should have to see death, to look it in the eye.”

“I can’t erase what happened to me. I can’t start a normal life. This is what I’m good at and I’ll do it until I die.” You pushed against him in such a way that he knew you were doing it on purpose. The two of you stared at each other behind the obscure masks you donned. No words were spoken, no breaths were drawn, you just stared. Two dangerous, dark figures that found a story behind each others eyes. And then you sighed, removing your beaked mask and setting it before you, then pulling down your hood. “What do I do?”

“You have options. They’ll still be that of an abnormal childhood, but they’ll save you a lifetime of pain.” He said, leaving you desperate for more answers.

“Just tell me!” You banged your fist on the wooden table, not causing so much as a flinch from this protector.

“You’re going to have to defect.” He plainly stated.

“What? That’s your plan? That’s obvious!” You became more frustrated, letting the tears fall. “I need more, Batman! I am tired of being given easy answers to shut me up!” Batman stood up, rising above you and walking closer, which to you felt deeply threatening. But he placed a hand upon your shoulder and quieted you as you tensed.

“You leave them, you come with me.” That was the plan, his offer to you. “I know what it’s like, and if you come with me you can still do what you’re good at—to an extent.”

“And where is the line?” You grumbled.

“No killing.” You were told.

“That’s it?”

“No one needs to die. That’s not up to us.” Batman’s words happened to make perfect sense to you now. “You’ll be taken care of if you can follow along, but it’ll take some time. For now, I need you to wrap up any loose ends you might have.”

“I have to go back to the Court.” You told him.

“I understand, but don’t do anything you’d regret later. The no-killing rule is in effect as of now.” That warning changed your plan for the better. You would make sure they never forget what they’ve done to you.

Volume 6 insofar.

Insofar, I’d say that this was an interesting Volume. It wasn’t as bad as I was fearing, and it honestly has me hyped for the series again. Yeah, there were a lot of things that ticked me off, like how Qrow’s alcoholism was treated as a serious moment when it was never treated as a problem before, or how it was unceremoniously dropped like Weiss’ racism without any real resolution, but overall it was an interesting volume. 

I’ll admit, Cinder’s reveal of being alive and the Apathy’s ability reveal were really underwhelming though. Cinder wouldn’t have to come back had the writers not given her big fight with Ruby to Vomit Boy back in Volume 5, but that’s more of a mark against Volume 5 than it is against Volume 6. 

The Apathy were also a slight disappointment. Many people were theorizing that they would be a Freddy Kruger kind of Grimm where they invade your dreams. I think a lot of us felt that that would have been more effective because it wouldn’t require the use of Ruby’s deus-ex-silver eyes to win the day, and it would require growth on the characters to overcome their fears. Sure, it had the bonus of finally giving development to Silver Eyes, but it was a major disappointment to see that the deus-ex-machina had to be used.

Maria is by far, the absolute best thing that has happened to this show. Maria provides a lot of the snark and charm that was missing from previous Volumes. It’s almost like she’s the new Roman Torchwick. Only, she’s not a villain, and people don’t seem to be very adamant about shipping her with Ruby like they did with Roman for some ungodly reason. While the reveal of Maria being an ex Silver-Eyed-Warrior was a bit predictable and underwhelming, it was nice to see someone prioritizing them over something like say……… Hand-To-Hand combat.

Speaking of which, let’s get onto the less explainable or things that didn’t even have a neutral payoff to them. Namely, Oz’s backstory. The series had been building up to revealing that Oz was morally ambiguous, that he had done questionable things in order to defeat Salem. That he had even done things that turned out to be completely ineffective or that he was hiding some big secret about how to defeat Salem and never revealed it. Instead we got that Salem was his ex-wife. It felt really underwhelming and wasn’t worth the hype of all that “Ozpin is not to be trusted” stuff that Raven had said in the previous Volume. 

Not only that, but the fact that he was just throwing bodies at Salem even though he knows that that tactic is ineffective isn’t morally ambiguous. It’s a stupid move. Instead of it being more like “He was the reason why Salem is the way she is” instead, it’s the fault of the light god being a prick, and the narrative trying to paint Salem, the grieving woman, as the bad guy here because “How dare women have emotions!” It honestly calls back to how the narrative tried to paint Yang as being in the wrong for charging Adam in Volume 3 back in Volume  4. It didn’t sit right with me. And I doubt that it sat well with anyone really. 

Not to mention that this feels like a damage control Volume. From the Adam short showing off Sienna Khan to make up for how they unceremoniously axed her in Volume 5, to how they are only now addressing the fact that Oz was possessing someone, to racism by the SDC being a thing. It honestly feels like this Volume was trying to make up for things that happened in previous Volumes by trying to address them now. 

I mean… It’s not a horrible Volume, but it would be a lot better if it wasn’t trying to make up for the mistakes of the previous Volumes. It’s trying to make up for how everyone was just standing in a room talking all the time in Volume 5, and how they only walked around talking in Volume 4. 

Sure, there were some nice things, but the fact of the matter is that these are the same people who kept saying “We want it [LGBT+ Relationships] to feel natural” but were simultaneously throwing heterosexual relationships at their audience’s face like they were having a sale. Yeah, they made up for it by having a same-sex couple being there, but if we’re being honest with ourselves, they’re only going to be there for the remainder of the Volume, and never be brought back or mentioned again. They’re there for brownie points. Real representation comes from making prominent characters LGBT+. Not background characters. And while it’s getting obvious that they’re setting up for a Blake x Yang thing, they really shouldn’t have teased Blake x Sun for so long if this was the endgame. Yeah, plans change. But in the end?- It really feels like they realized that they were going to make every main character get together with another guy, and that their spiel of “We’ll have representation” wouldn’t count unless they made one of their major characters get into a relationship with another girl. 

The shipping war is on them is what I’m saying.

And discounting all of that, there’s also the factor of them hyping things up only for them to fall flat. Oscar literally left the house, causing everyone to worry about him……… So that he could get an outfit change. That scene here Oscar was missing set up a “Find Oscar” or “Oscar finds himself” plot so hard that when we got a “Jaune finds closure” plot, it was underwhelming. Like, really underwhelming. 

Regardless, this Volume was pretty decent, and compared to the train-wrecks of Volumes 4 and 5, this is indeed the Wonder Woman to the Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad (respectively) of those other two.

So kudos to the new guy for being able to salvage this show. Admittedly, they probably should have done this after the shitshow that was Volume 4, but in all honesty?- I like this volume. The characters (Mainly Maria) are interesting, the action is getting better, and Jaune is tolerable.

Let me repeat that: In this Volume. I. Think. Jaune. Is. Tolerable.

Considering who I am, that’s a big deal. My hatred for Jaune is at the point that I believe that Cinder should have bitch slapped that weakling so hard that his head turned around a hundred times and fell off his body back in Volume 5. I hate Jaune to the point that I actively want him to fight Darkseid in a DEATH BATTLE. I hate him to the point that I would have an extreme moment of euphoria if he were to die.

And this Volume?- I find Jaune tolerable. He’s actually owning up to his mistakes, they finally wrapped up his “I’m sad because Pyrrha died” spiel (It only affected him. Don’t deny it). And he’s actually being somewhat useful. I mean… I’d still  have that euphoric moment if he were to die, but still. I think he’s tolerable.

I want to know who is looking over the writing, because I want to shake their hand(s). Because they’re doing their absolute damnedest to fix this show, and their effort is showing. We’re getting results. We’re seeing this happening. Would have it been more preferable if this had happened earlier?- UNDOUBTEBLY. But at least M&K didn’t keep their heads up their own asses and keep seeing themselves as “Above criticism” like they’ve been doing for the longest time.

Then again, I’m comparing all Volumes to Volume 4, so since that’s the baseline, anything is an improvement.
