Parallels: 12.03 || 13.21 ↳ me @ Berens: Et tu, Brute?
I know my usual “meta” amounts to putting quirky captions underneath my gif sets and yelling in the tags, but I have… a lot of thoughts on this that I need to share.
Disclaimer: At the time of writing this, episode 13x21 hasn’t aired yet and it is very much possible that I will have to amend some of my points or simply update the post once I’ve actually seen the episode.
[left gif shows a scene from 12.03, Castiel: “The Devil is free because of me. Finding him is my responsibility.”] [right gif shows a scene from 13.21, Castiel: “We let Lucifer out of the Cage. And he has never stopped being our responsibility.”]
A lot of the comments I’ve seen ever since the promo aired expressed their (justified) anger about what Castiel said here and how, once again, Sam is unfairly blamed for something that is out of his control. For the most part, I agree with these sentiments because I, too, am bitter about the fact that this is a way too common occurence in Supernatural that is hardly ever addressed.
But I feel like there’s a very important distinction to make between the usual “Let’s Blame Sam Game” the show likes to play and how Castiel utilizes blame in this scene.
I’m not going to deny that, despite being a Sam girl, I have a very soft spot for Castiel and that I was disappointed to hear stuff like that coming from him. I expect it from Dean these days, but it seemed like a very out of character thing to do for Castiel, at least initially.
However, I have since realised that it’s entirely in tune with the characterisation of him this past season and while not everyone will agree with me on that, it actually makes me very excited?
But first things first: The phrasing here isn’t a coincidence. It can’t be, because Berens wrote both 12.03 and 13.21 and while his episodes generally tend to be hit or miss, he’s far from an incapable writer and would hopefully catch something this big if it wasn’t on purpose.
So, what, did Castiel do a 180 in the span of 40 episodes, absolving himself of his guilt and just now deciding he can dump it all on Sam?
No, that is not what’s happening here.
Castiel’s become increasingly more ruthless as the season progressed, with the key incidents indicating this being 1) him stabbing Lucifer with the words:
“This is me, learning from my mistakes.” - 13.12
which, honestly, still iconic™ (that same line, by the way, is furthermore proof that no, Castiel did not suddenly decide freeing Lucifer from the Cage in s11 wasn’t exclusively his fault) and 2) His readiness to kill Donatello when he proved dangerous and, maybe more importantly, useless (13.14).
I’m sure there’s more but these are the most relevant events I could list off of the top of my head.
It’s a very interesting development to say the least and one I welcome because I miss ruthless Castiel like nothing else in the world.
But how exactly does this relate to what he says to Sam?
“We let Lucifer out of the cage. And he’s never stopped being our responsibility.” - as depicted in gif #2 up above
This line was initially presented without context and I, like a lot of people, assumed Castiel was talking about Lucifer Rising 2.0 in season 11.
But after having watched the sneak peek (x) and how Castiel pointedly mentions Lucifer’s possession of Sam, the intent behind this phrase, to me, changed completely and suddenly became a lot more heartbreaking.
Because what Castiel is playing on here is the guilt Sam still feels regarding Lucifer’s “original” rise all the way back in season 4. The show never let him forget it, the fact that he was manipulated was hardly ever even acknowledged and as a result, Sam sure didn’t forget it either. And Castiel knows that. It doesn’t take a genius to figure it out.
So what’s happening here is that Castiel deliberately turns Sam’s own guilt against him in order to get them closer to their common goal because that’s what he thinks it will take.
It’s also made very obvious that Castiel doesn’t like to use what is essentially a manipulative tactic on Sam - in that same scene, he directly calls Lucifer’s possession of Sam, of himself out as a violation, as being used, which I’m pretty sure is a first for Supernatural. He acknowledges Sam’s trauma and fear in a frankly poor attempt at soothing his inevitable dismissal of it and that is what I find most intriguing and horrifying about the entire exchange - that Castiel is aware of what he’s doing and that it most likely hurts him, but that he feels like ultimately, it’s what works.
We all know Castiel is tired of losing his family. He says as much to Donatello during 13.14:
“I’m sorry, but I’m not going to let you or anyone hurt the people I love. Not again.“
And it’s becoming more and more apparent that “how far are you willing to go to protect the ones you love?” seems to be his theme of the season.
And this is not supposed to read as making up excuses for Castiel - his intent doesn’t change anything for Sam and my personal hope for this episode is that Sam ends up being in the right which then leads to Castiel apologising to him.
But I just personally felt like I needed to address this because taking off my Sam-tinted glasses once in a while can only be benefitting in the long run.
