i think that most people would be more likely to eat this as the side dish, or as a part of the main dish along with some kind of meat; my family (who are not vegetarians and eat more normally constructed meals than i do) usually go with chicken/beef kebabs because my mom doesn't eat lamb. ghormeh sabzi is a really popular and iconic persian stew that is usually paired with rice. you could also have a shirazi salad as a side to incorporate veggies into the meal!
but on the real though, here is your guide to assyrian rice preparation from your friendly neighborhood assyrian:
start wanting rice. (or, if you are traditional, simply recognize your constant desire for rice.)
measure out two cups of rice. then one more. then two more. then another. this seems fine. you love rice. there is no way that this will backfire on you.
remember that your great-great-uncle’s recipe says it should be soaked overnight.
become consumed with despair.
decide to soak it for half an hour instead, acknowledging that the final product will be inferior and anger your ancestors but will still satisfy your now almost-overwhelming need for rice to be inside your body much faster.
remember that you should have set the water to boil when you soaked the rice. goddammit.
once the water boils, put the rice in until it is half-cooked. the eyeballing or intuitive method is less effective than a timer but that’s how your aunt does it so you feel compelled to meet her standards.
now that the rice has fluffed up, realize how much rice six dry cups really is. holy shit. you’ve fucked up immeasurably.
take a minute to dwell upon your failings.
grease a baking dish with butter. this will never be as elegant as you want it to and your fingers will get greasy, but the slightly shameful, self-indulgent joy of licking your fingers afterwards will make up for it.
pour the rice into the dish. wonder immediately if you actually buttered the dish beforehand and if you’ve just fucked up.
melt approximately one thousand pounds of butter in the microwave and pour it over the rice, pondering your imminent death from rapid-onset arterial clogging. put a small pat of butter on the top to properly gild the lily.
put your pan into the oven, which you have absolutely preheated after your previous lack of foresight. shake the rice once or twice while it bakes to make sure the butter is well distributed. resist the impulse to climb into the oven with the rice. for the last ten minutes, sit next to the oven and count the seconds until it’s done.
remove the dish from the oven. shed a tear or two at the perfection laid before you. if you are dining with others, this is the time to serve the rice while making passive-aggressive statements about how oh no, you don’t need any help, you just made dinner all by yourself, you can serve everyone as well. (this is still fun if done alone, but optional.)
CONSUME THE RICE.
realize that you have eaten half of the dish in one sitting. no matter how much rice you made, this will always happen.
put the leftovers away, if there are any, and enjoy a cup of chai while marveling at the amount of food you have just eaten. if possible, fall asleep in an armchair, sitting up, head tilted slightly back, like a grandpa.
for the rest of the evening, think fondly of how much rice you have in the fridge now and how many meals it will supplement, refusing to acknowledge that you will almost certainly eat the rest of it in a few hours for a midnight meal.

I want a sci-fi/space opera TV show with real plot and character development, and more that 2 seasons that's free to watch
have you tried Babylon 5?
I want a space opera with no filler episodes, every episode should have something relevant to the plot
have you tried Babylon 5?
I want a space opera that is respectful to other cultures and religions and shows conflicts between different cultures and how they are resolved
have you tried Babylon 5?
I want a space opera where actions (and inaction) have real consequences that the characters must navigate and deal with
have you tried Babylon 5?
I want a space opera that deals with mystical-like things but remains realistic
Have you tried B5?
I want a space opera where women are actively involved and not treated as a damsel or a plot device I want a show where you see multiple sides to a story I want a show that talks about the harm of colonization and slavery I want a show that shows PTSD and the effects of war I want a show that talks about genocide and racism I want a show with an explicitly LGBTQ+ person, I want a show with fucking fantastic 90's fashion that's 'futuristic' I want a show where every actor is a good actor, I want a show where the main cast is expanded on realistically, I want a show that deals with alcohol, drug abuse, and how it effects those around you I want a show where love is both safety and danger I want a show with a fantastic plot twist that I would never see coming I want a show with excellent quotes I want I want a show with movies that are relevant and expand upon the universe I want-
HAVE YOU TRIED BABYLON 5?!?!??!!!?
Literally the only downsides:
most of the main cast is white, there are many side characters and extras that are POC but most of the cast is white
the LGBT+ character is not expanded upon much
while B5 does have 5 seasons the 4th was supposed to be the end until they got more funding, I personally recommend not watching the 5th season
*correction, original was intended to have 5 seasons but was worried about funding getting cut so season 4 is jam packed and season 5 is flat. they both suffer but personally I find season 5 worse. thanks to @purronronner for the correction!

if it is your view that antisemitism is inherent to the christian bible, do you believe that it is possible for religious christians and jewish people to peacefully coexist?
It is absolutely possible for Christians and Jews to coexist, as long as:
-Christians reject supercessionism. Supercessionism, the belief that Christianity is the "progression" of Judaism and that Judaism is just less-evolved Christianity, is inherently antisemitic. Rejecting that belief is integral to not being an antisemitic Christian.
-Christians stop believing that anyone who isn't Christian needs to be "saved", and stop trying to convert non-Christians.
-Christians stop appropriating Judaism and closed Jewish practices.
-Christians stop trying to speak for Jews and Judaism.
-Christians recognize the history of Christian antisemitism.
-Christians associate with and care for Jews not because "Jesus was Jewish" but because we are people deserving of humanity.
There are many religious Christians that coexist with Jews. In the community where my family lives, many religious Catholics and Quakers work at the Jewish schools there and there's a lot of solidarity. My father's stepfather is a religious Protestant Christian and he's an incredible grandfather and ally. It's absolutely possible if the work is done.
#'but but my religion requires i advocate for cultural genocide!!' then your religion sucks ass#being disrespectful and intolerant towards others means they get to distrust and dislike you#what's not clicking evangelists#this is exactly why when I was younger I hated christianity#and now I still despise missionaries#just be a universalist like d'engle#it's not that hard#christianity#antisemitism#I love how purronronner just lays it out. nothing but truth there#religion#Judaism#proselytizing#cultural appropriation#religious coexistence#multi faith acceptance#multiculturism#idk what else to tag this#sky adds#skypalacearchitect adds#evangelism

hi !!! I had a um a Question abt Ben the Malevolent Oc (i cannot remember what the au is called for the life of me .)
Where ?? did he get his name ?? How did that Come About and also does he have a full name like John does or is it just Ben ?
Thank you !!
hello!!
so when i pitched the idea of a kayne fragment inside a no-longer-dead parkers head, my friends helped w the brainstorming.
@mira-eyeteeth suggested that he would pick a ridiculous self important name for himself, since he's a bit of kayne who is also a bit ridiculous and self important, and, per her message, his full name is Benjamin Octavius Leonard VanHoute the Sixth (and parker immediately opts to just call him ben instead)
but, technically, we've never actually used that name for him past the original concept lmao still he's ben mostly for the dc comics joke! peter "parker" yang and his ben :P
but mostly he picks ben bc he likes the mouth feel! since he's just got the mouth, everything has to have a nice mouth feel :}
also while we're at it, it was @purronronner who suggested ben get parkers mouth!! (it was a joke originally but it made for some excellent concepts so it stuck!!!)
ben is my lil brainworm but my friends have been fantastic help in making him who he is today :D (more were involved but this is just getting away from answering ur question and very much getting into gushing abt my friends territory lol)
#i could talk for hours abt how wonderful my friends are and how lovely it is that we all bounce ideas abt ben off each other#but i figure i should leave this here lol#virg answers#dreamlands timeshare oc; ben | kayne fragment

So, initially when I was going to answer this, I was under the impression that “A Single Pale Rose” took place before “The Answer”. Which.... isn’t the case. The timeline on the wiki says otherwise. So, in this au, we will have to tweak it a bit. Either by having the events of the shattering happening before Garnet’s fusion, or by having it take place in between the accidental fusing and her meeting Rose properly. Sorry for the confusion.
#mod eden#i feel like such a dunce#always do more research before you make an au i guess lol#purronronner

Thanks so much for linking WIWY the other day, I read through it, and I cried. I loved the references to the 90s Winnie the Pooh content, the cameo by gopher (who always annoyed me cause my mum complained that he wasn't in the book (and then I rewatched something recently where they made a joke about him not being in the book XD)). I had completely forgotten Kessie until you referenced her and then it all came flooding back! It was all so good.
thankyou, i’m so glad you liked it! ^-^ (spoiler: i cried making it) (and the joke about Gopher is from the original movie, it’s my favorite hahah)
yesssssss 8y
ahh wonderful! i’m happy to hear you’re enjoying it :D i referenced the 90s show and a lot of WtP movies (and even a video game), so it’s always fun to see the people that picked up on them!

Sent this to the group chat on 8/19:
Oh boy, the "fun" of Renfield ableism Spiders... JACK AND THE PERIOD-TYPICAL DRUG ABUSE In his defense, Renfield's specific mental illnesses are genuinely dangerous to others and himself I want to know how Renfield Knows things about Dracula But also like God As horrible as Victorian asylums were/are, Renfield has demonstrated behaviors that do indicate that outpatient care even in the modern day would be difficult to manage without endangering lives... How am I supposed to feel about this entire situation...
@purronronner pointed out that I could resolve a lot of this internal conflict with "well, for starters, he’s displaying those behaviors because he’s written to have those behaviors as a result of Stoker’s biases and views of people in asylums."
Which is, in fact, quite the point.

Well, on to the second question! If you want my take on the first, here's a link to that particular reblog. Here, I want to talk about Judaism and dæmons.
Now, firstly: there's a common idea that for Jews, the settling will be the sign it's time for one's Bar or Bat Mitzvah, as seen in this post by @purronronner, and in the amzing fic Dæmorphing by @featherquillpen, AKA Poetry (sorry for tagging! I thought it might interest you). Note, Poetry added an interesting idea about a Psalm king David wrote when his dæmon settled, and I offered to write it - I am working on it, but will welcome help.
Regarding the Bar/Bat Mitzvah detail: from my knowledge of the Jewish Halacha and rules about coming of age, it actually might be more accurate than the set age. In the Mishnah, when talking about when someone becomes a legal adult in Judaism, the law depends not only on age but on signs of sexual maturity. While a dæmon settling isn't necessarily related, it is a comfortable visible sign of maturity and thus - I believe this might work.
It's hard to say what other Halachic implications might be for having a dæmon. There might be a special prohibition for touching another person's dæmon, because even though society seems content with a general taboo - Judaism enjoys codifying such things in laws. There might be rules regarding where dæmons are and aren't allowed to enter, though I doubt that - more likely there'll be rules on things that need to be done before they enter places. There may be alterations on various rules I can't currently think about, honestly. I must say, most of my thoughts relate to theological and philosophical matters - which I'll touch in a bit. But I'll be remiss if I won't try first addressing the halacha, as it's a large part of Judaism (IMO). One more thing - Poetry changed the Keri'ah tradition, of tearing a garment in mourning a dead relative, to be tearing some part of one's dæmon. I did comment on it possibly clashing with a Torah commandment against self harm, so that's a possible question.
Anyway, going on to the theology/philosophy matters. There is an issue with understanding the nature of dæmons. You see, we get some of the Magisterium's opinion on the matter, with Settling being related to Ancient Sin and all. We even got a portion of the Bible from Lyra's world that seems to support that. All that might make you think that Judaism will be on the same table as Christianity here - after all, it's from their shared canon.
Thing is, though, that Judaism is very good at having many varied opinions on matters, in addition to high proficiency in disagreeing with Christianity. So I daresay it's certainly possible for it to mean something else. I do have some thoughts on the matter, but this being kind of long already - I'll try to make it short:
a. In thinking of a Hebrew name for dæmons, I was aided (indirectly) by the excellent translation by Yal Sela-Shapiro of the Golden Compass, who translated the Biblical verses in the end and offered the name Er'el as an Ancient Hebrew equivalent for dæmons. It's considered the name of a type of angel in Judaism, though it's not talked about much and appears in our Bible only once, and in vague meaning at that. My personal fan interpretation, that I think might appear in Lyra's world Midrash, is that it comes from the words "I shall appear to them" (as is likely the actual meaning of the word when it appears in our Bible). Basically, G-d appears to humans through their dæmons, though I'm not sure what may be the concequences of that take.
b. In the Chabad school of thought, specifically in things from the book Tania, it is very easy to see dæmons as physical manifestation of a person's "animal soul". This is one's drive to worldly pleasures - which would fit perfectly with the general worldview seen in HDM. It is considered to be something of an evil inclination in a person, but it's actually made of both good and evil and is likened in that to the Tree of Knowledge (of) Good and Evil. It's also said to have its roots in ḥaiot hakodesh, the Holy Animals of G-d's chariot, which fits with my point in the previous point. The greatest part is, in the comics adaptation of the Tania (yeah, it exists), we get to see a person's animal soul - which can be seen as essentially a book about a kid and his dæmon, with him occasionally seeing other people's dæmons.
c. Regarding settled forms, there's likely going to be some preference for Kosher animals. People with pig dæmons might suffer ostracization, sadly. Forms such as vultures and lions, and perhaps donkeys and dogs as well as snakes, might receive a different sort of significance even though their not Kosher. My personal headcanon as of late is that Moses' dæmon was a donkey, and I do have reasoning (even though it plays into an old antisemitic trope regardin Onolatry). King David's dæmon might be either a lion(ess) or a sheep. King Saul may have had a wolf dæmon. In the Jewish system of symbology, while being a Kosher animal is certainly good - there are still non-Kosher animals that also have good connotations. Pigs are still going to be problematic.
So, what are your thoughts? What halachic questions regarding dæmons do you have in mind, and what do you think the answer might be? What different but still legitimate view on dæmons you think might exist in Judaism? And what meanings might different settled forms have?
All right. So, first: if you are either Jewish, like His Dark Materials, or both, please reblog. If you aren't any of those but know someone who is - please share it with them. I want to get as many thoughts on this as possible.
In essence, I just want to ask two simple questions. I have the beginnings of answers for myself, but Judaism is nothing if not full of discourse and many opinions on one topic. So, again: reblog. Share your thoughts and opinions. Hopefully, it will give us a wide variety of possibilities and answers.
The two questions are: where are Jews in Lyra's world? And what are the theological and Halachic concequences of having dæmons?
I intend to share my opinions in two separate reblogs, but please share your thoughts even if you don't see mine. The short version is that I looked about events in Jewish history around John Calvin's time for the first question (pope John Calvin being the major alternation of history in HDM). As for the second question - I have some thoughts relating to the Chabad thought stream. Elaborations, again, going in reblogs.
Thank you in advance!
(PS, question number 1 was handled once by the sadly deactivvated user the Tea Detective, though their full post disappeared. Link to a reblogging of the first half: here. Note, another reblog mentions other religions - feel free to discuss them, I'm focusing on Judaism because I'm Jewish. Another post asking this question was posted here, so have fun with it. Meanwhile, this post is about dæmons and religions in general and lightly touches Judaism.)

@purronronner said: thoughts on “congrats now you have to deal with your younger self. maybe attempt to stop them from making the bad choices. good fucking luck” style time travel aus
More inherently interesting, especially if the time traveler has to hide their identity from their former self, for whatever reason - time agency protocol, safety of the timespace continuum, sheer social awkwardness... But still runs into many of the same problem, ie, I’m here to watch the story play out for real, not a weird speedrun.* Watching people deal with their pre-character development self is fun, but mostly just for humor purposes in a cracky oneshot.
*the only circumstance in which I want to see a character speedrun character development or events that they’ve already done is if late in a series, when they’ve undergone a lot of character development and done a lot of shit, they get amnesia for an episode/book/etc, and you get the giddy pleasure and pride of watching them figure out all their morals/power/found family/etc all over again, but this time at 5x speed while probably a lot of people try to kill them for reasons they don’t understand. Which might be kind of how the series started, too! the Temeraire books, of course, did this excellently in book 8 of 9.

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
Tahani screeched and covered herself with the blanket. “Eleanor! You can’t have Janet here!”
Eleanor put her hands on her hips. “Why not?”
“We’re in the middle of sex! I don’t want a voyeur!”
“You’re having sex right now?” Janet said curiously. “My databanks tell me that sex involves physical contact and also bodily fluids.”
“Not like, right now right now,” Eleanor said. “But, you know, as soon as you go away we’ll get back to it. Hey. We can use, like, incognito mode with you, right?”
“That’s right!” said Janet. “I will not disclose anything you search or what you look like naked.”
“See?” Eleanor told Tahani. “Nothing to worry about.”
- from Well-Forked, a TGP fic
I’m really proud of this bit because The Good Place has such a distinctive sense of humor, with the most charming and funny banter, and I think I managed to capture that in the dialogue of this fic. It’s not easy to write fic for comedy shows, especially one as funny as The Good Place.
N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?
Oh my God, yes. I would really love for there to be a sequel to The Hork-Bajir Job, but I can’t for the life of me figure out how the Leverage team would manage to con the Animorphs out from the One or the Kelbrid or wherever they are, especially since we know so little about either the One or the Kelbrid from canon.
U: Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.
I’m very well equipped to answer this question right now because I’ve been transferring all my old fic bookmarks to AO3, so I’ve seen who I bookmark a lot. These three are writers I’ve been fans of since I started out in Doctor Who fandom last decade.
I love sahiya’s writing because they’re just so warm and generous toward all characters. They see the best in every character and draw it out and cherish it.
I am a fan of lyricwritesprose. She has a great sense of lore and backstory, and can suggest years of history and nuance in a sentence. All her characters have rich pasts.
I love Basingstoke because they let characters be flawed and screwed up and nasty, without ever letting fics get blasted and grimdark because of it. Also their fic can be laugh-out-loud hilarious.

What, dare I ask, might those takes be…?(I know I’m going to regret asking)
whoooof
Basically V-L is of the opinion that Hugo condemns Fantine for being sexually active, which is pretty amazing since Fantine’s entire story is a direct condemnation of that sort of attitude?? it’s a very clear case of depiction NOT being endorsement, because this is a 19th century didactic novel, And Yet Vargas Llosa writes: “On the matter of sex, the morality of Les Miserables melds perfectly with the most intolerant and puritanical interpretation of Catholic morality.”
(This of course means he pretty much misses the entire point of the arc Enjolras gets at the barricade, too, of course. AGH.)

@purronronner I was definitely looking for headcanons, not aus, but thats still really interesting! /Pos It would definitely be very different for sure. I think it's fun thinking about how events could vary if you change things around. I wonder how things would change when it comes to being accepted by the castle, and the storm king prophecy. It sounds like it would be... Kind of awful for agatha? Just as many expectations, but kind of reversed this time around, and with the addition of transgender identity being thrown into the mix.
Does anyone have trans gg headcanons?
#replies#id like to keep this particular thread focused on headcanons so i may not reply to aus after this one#but maybe we'll do an au thread later!
