Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

Not all butterflies enjoy flower nectar; some, like the purple emperor butterfly, have a more eclectic diet. These beauties are commonly found around carrion and roadkill, sucking out the nutritious fluids in the rotting meat. They will also feed on honeydew produced by aphids, tree sap, dung, and urine.

@titania-saturnine submitted: Sorry for the poor quality ^^' I was sitting on the porch when this friend landed on the chair arm rest and was exploring all the little grooves on it with her (?) tongue (??). I'm curious about the species because I've seen a few around lately (in NW Spain.)

Lol it sure is licking the heck out of that chair. Guess it's delicious. This lil friend appears to be a lesser purple emperor, Apatura ilia. Like other emperor butterflies, the caterpillars have cute little horns like in my icon photo :)

03/07/2024-Phone photo of Cupid's darts in Winchester at lunch time, Purple Emperor at Knepp on Saturday and beautiful sky scenes and tree out the front on a stunning evening tonight with one sky from this morning.

Purple Hairstreak and Whitethroat at Lakeside and Grey Wagtail at the Weirs, Peregrine at St. Thomas Church and water-crowfoot at Abbey Gardens in Winchester were nice sightings today.
