GUYS, I just realized something!!! So next year is going to be the moomin's 80th anniversary. This means that in 20 years the moomins will become public domain!!! I totally forgot about this!! For those of you who were disappointed in Moominvalley season 4 and want to make your own indie projects about it, you have 20 years to make it. The countdown starts now!! Also we'd better not have those crappy horror films like blood and honey. We do not tolerate that kind of crap with this franchise!! 😤
EDIT: I also wanted to add in that the information I provided was mostly how the American government handles copyright. It could be different for Europe so just be ready.
EDIT #2: Guys I messed up so bad on this topic and did not research this properly. I'm so sorry. Apparently for something to be in the public domain the original author has to be dead for over 70 years. Tove Jasson died only 22 years ago. Meaning we still have a long way to go... Sorry everyone. Still don't be afraid to have ideas for like fanfiction and alternate universes!
#moomin#public domain#Moominvalley#moominvalley season 4#I myself have a couple of ideas for projects already#This franchise will get better again trust me

Me, realizing that in six years I could rewrite “The Love Pawn” as a full-length novel and publish it if I wanted, even including the original text as a bonus at the end.
#i've been thinking a lot about public domain stuff the last couple weeks okay?#anyway i've said it before but one of my legit favorite things about that story is that it has enough plot to sustain a whole novel#but instead everything is shoved into an absolutely insane fifteen pages pfft#the love pawn#personal#fic rambles#?

and you know i’ve always thought that it’s such a shame that all the big name examples we have of “filing the serial numbers off:” like, turning a fanfiction into an original work are ahem. not neccessarily the greatest works of literary fiction BECAUSE LIKE. and maybe this is because of my love for the wonderful “expy” (we should put kaworu in more anime. we should do it more) BUT I FEEL LIKE it can be done awesomely. sometimes i see people’s heavily-AU’d and tonally shifted fanfiction and im like damn man. i’d love to read this as ur original book. i feel like the key is twofold: 1) remember to reintroduce the world and characters properly in the text because you won’t have the fanfiction tags and original property to do that for u and 2) get SILLAY you dont need to keep everything about the original characters..... u can change their hair colours.....their names....anything u want......................................................
then again i have a theory that we only notice these serial numbers being filed off when it’s done sloppily so maybe we do have some good stuff out there....hidden in plain sight.....
#wheres that post thats like utena and princess tutu are like two multi season long essays about two conflicting perspectives on tuxedo mask#(i still need to watch utena.......) more thinks should be like that. we should have more stories that are essays about tuxedo mask#sorry im uh. shifting into public domain mode again because i was rewatching elementary and thinking too much about sherlock adaptations#(everyone should make one. for fun. i should make five. for fun. everyone gets a sherlocksona)#and my public domain mode always has a little. um. secret side mode thats more legally dubious in regards to copyright#.........file off the serial numbers mode...... ITS A GRAY AREA its a gray area#hee hee. hee hee hee#but for real i think. more people should rip off characters they like from stuff. i think its good for the soul#especially if u cram enough self indulgent headcanons in there the character will be unrecognizable to most anyway. its fine (not a lawyer)#maybe i have a couple ocs that are ripped straight out of a god damn mario game. no one will know. no one will know. no one can tell#u just gotta be snazzy with it. give ur favourite character the same hair colour as u. switch around genders and stuff. its fine. its fine#(not a lawyer intensfies)

Hey quick question, when people talk about their OCs, does that include characters from original works too or is it only about making characters to go into fanworks/just making guys that you then put in various settings?
#i mean obviously if you’re writing og fic your characters are OCs#(unless you’re working with public domain stuff i guess)#but i want to know if the acronym is like#understood as meaning something more specific#in the general fandom and art communities#like should i say that i have hundreds of OCs because I’m writing a fantasy sf epic or none because those are Just Characters not OCs#(well i guess i have a couple OCs in my fics but those are just random guys with a few lines and a vague description#i made for practical reasons not My Guys)

Tag an IP or blorbo you want to free from copyright/trademark corporate hell
Hey, hot take, but if a company decides they no longer want to distribute a piece of media they own the rights to, then they should be legally required to sign the rights back over to the creator.
They shouldn't be allowed to just sit on the IP for the rest of time, especially if they have no intention of ever releasing it again.
#I'll go first:#Felix the Cat#i mean technically the character is public domain#a cat named Felix#that looks for the most part like classic Felix#would be ok#but you couldn't call the thing “Felix the Cat”#because for some insane reason Dreamworks owns the copyright on that combination of syllables#they don't even want to make another movie with him!#they just want the trademark to sell merch#couple that with the fact that actual projects featuring Felix keep getting shelved#idk man#you could do a lot eith a magic cartoon cat

everyone say thank you to julian gough for the minecraft end poem!!!
#i read the story behind its creation and its history in minecraft#and we could’ve had a new version of minecraft without it very easily#so mr gough never signed away his rights to the poem to notch#there wasn’t even a contract involved#when microsoft was placing an offer for minecraft mojang did try to get me gough to sign away the rights to it#but mr gough was very against doing so#and once microsoft bought minecraft they never attempted to get mr gough to sign the rights away#so the end poem was being used illegally for years in minecraft#mr gough decided to not fight against microsoft and mojang for this he decided to release it to public domain a couple years ago#so now anyone can use the poem#which is great for anyone who sells merch or smth with the poem on it#in fact mr gough explicitly says to continue to sell stuff if you want#anyways i was curious about if notch actually wrote the poem or not#because he’s such an asshole and it seems so out of place for someone like him#to write and the universe loves you because you are love#and it turns out that line came out of psilocybin trip from mr gough himself

New Things to Beware on the Internet
On May 3rd, Google released 8 new top-level domains (TLDs) -- these are new values like .com, .org, .biz, domain names. These new TLDs were made available for public registration via any domain registrar on May 10th.
Usually, this should be a cool info, move on with your life and largely ignore it moment.
Except a couple of these new domain names are common file type extensions: ".zip" and ".mov".
This means typing out a file name could resolve into a link that takes you to one of these new URLs, whether it's in an email, on your tumblr blog post, a tweet, or in file explorer on your desktop.
What was previously plain text could now resolve as link and go to a malicious website where people are expecting to go to a file and therefore download malware without realizing it.
Folk monitoring these new domain registrations are already seeing some clearly malicious actors registering and setting this up. Some are squatting the domain names trying to point out what a bad idea this was. Some already trying to steal your login in credentials and personal info.
This is what we're seeing only 12 days into the domains being available. Only 5 days being publicly available.
What can you do? For now, be very careful where you type in .zip or .mov, watch what website URLs you're on, don't enable automatic downloads, be very careful when visiting any site on these new domains, and do not type in file names without spaces or other interrupters.
I'm seeing security officers for companies talking about wholesale blocking .zip and .mov domains from within the company's internet, and that's probably wise.
Be cautious out there.

Fun Fact: in one month (1/1/23), all Sherlock Holmes stories hit the public domain and the Conan Doyle Estate can't do shit! I say this for absolutely no reason but also congrats in advance to the happy couple.

Ok I love the muppets with all the energy I am capable of mustering, but A Christmas Carol is literally a hundred pages. That’s it. The book is like a centimeter thick. Animal Farm has more pages. And it’s not exactly a hard read, it’s written simply and entertainingly because dickens wanted everyone to understand it’s message.
So good job self reporting that you’ve never even seen a copy of the book, let alone picked it up.
#a christmas carol#also good time to mention that a christmas carol is in the public domain and therefore free to read online#it takes#had to stop and google this bit#it takes three hours to listen to an audiobook version. I’m not saying you have to read that fast but I mean the average person could#knock this book out in a couple of afternoons. and that’s really stretching it
