hi! Question for service dog handlers!!
How did you go about talking to medical professionals about getting a service dog, mainly for owner training one? (I assume that the process would be different if you're getting an SD from a program). Did you talk to a medical professional at all? I know you can't be "prescribed" a service dog but was there anything that medical professionals did on their end? (write you a doctors note, put something in your file about getting a service dog, etc) I've been talking to my therapist about getting a psychiatric SD for awhile now but would it be worth talking to a psychiatrist or a general care doctor about it as well? This is super duper preliminary/just the beginning of the process but I haven't found a lot of resources about this part. Any other help/advice about this is super appreciated!

if my dog could talk it'd be like this:
my dog: hey owner
me:
my dog: lay down!!!
me: k but-
my dog, putting his full weight on me: you are Laying Down Right Now

We survived. That is all. I hate the idea of doing it again tomorrow. But there's nothing I can do. As usual.
Tomorrow is Max's first full 8 hour work day, and my first 8-hours-in-person work day since literally my last day of middle school 9 years ago. I just got home this evening from a week and a half of traveling. I haven't had a rest day in at least 3 weeks. I'm too exhausted to be as terrified as the situation calls for. Thank goodness it'll only be 2 days. Hopefully I don't manage to make too terrible of an impression on anyone. Particularly my boss and his boss (who will both be there).

Ghostsoap Shifter AU
- Ghost is a very large black Jaguar
- Soap is a border collie
- As if Ghost werenā€™t deadly enough already he often shifts on missions to take care of enemies
- Shifters are rare enough no one makes the connection and no one who sees him shifted ever lives
- Most people laugh at the rumors which are about as outrageous as any of the other ones surrounding Ghost
- Of course some people theorize that the rumors are more than that but thereā€™s not really any way to prove it and they mostly donā€™t worry about it too much because itā€™s not something that makes him more vulnerable since he already stands out on the battlefield
- Soap is the opposite, absolutely everyone knows heā€™s a shifter and mostly no one cares since shifting into dogs, cats, bunnies, and other small animals is much more common than exotic animals
- Itā€™s not much use on most missions but occasionally heā€™ll shift if there are kids around to cheer them up or heard them toward safety
- He also shifts to comfort his team members if someone is particularly upset, almost always Ghost but sometimes he does it for Gaz too and on a very rare occasion Price
- Walks all over the base in his dog form, usually following and herding Ghost around which absolutely baffles everyone because they act fairly professional otherwise
- Soap also looks ridiculously small next to him when shifted because heā€™s so big
- Gaz thinks the whole thing is hilarious and after he walks in on Soap in his dog form laying on Ghost on the couch in the 141 rec room one too many times he buys Soap a PTSD service dog vest as a joke
- Ghost gives him an absolute death glare but Soap beams at him
- He thinks itā€™s hilarious because he has admittedly been performing Service dog tasks for Simon on a semi regular basis for months at that point
- Doing deep pressure therapy and behavior interruption and grounding tasks for disassociation when Simon is struggling, especially after nightmares
- No one cares at all what they do on base because Price is pretty much in charge anyway and everyone else is too scared of Ghost to protest
- But when they go on leave Simon has a really hard time with his PTSD and Soap has the brilliant idea to put on the vest and tag along for some errands since he canā€™t exactly lay down on top of Simon in public in his human form if he gets overwhelmed
- It helps a ton and theyā€™re able to go more places, sometimes with Soap tagging along just as a dog and sometimes bringing the vest as an emergency measure and shifting if Simon needs help or comfort
- Soap definitely does a bunch of research into different Psychiatric service dog tasks
- They both agree that Gaz can never know
- But it definitely makes Simon really happy even if he doesnā€™t want to admit it he ends up sending Soap different ideas of tasks that would help him
- He loves to see Soap find joy in his animal side
- His relationship with his shifter form is much more complex, no one else in his family was a shifter and he tried to hide it from them, even when his mom found out she tried really hard to hide it from his dad
- But eventually he found out when he scared Simon enough that he shifted into a little Jaguar cub
- From that moment on it was his lifeā€™s purpose to force Simon into shifting, and he loved to hurt and scare Simon when he was in that form especially as a kid because he liked the power of having control over such a dangerous animal
- By the time he was old enough to join the military he already had a whole separate set of scars on his jaguar form and he swore never to let that part of himself be hurt again
- Lied on his enlistment paperwork about his assigned gender at birth and about being a shifter
- The one thing heā€™s always liked about his shifter form is that it was always male, even when he was a kid and hadnā€™t been anywhere close to starting to transition
- He thinks itā€™s because shifter forms are supposed to be connected to you on a soul level and it helped him process his gender
- He wants to protect himself from any further harm to that part of himself and doesnā€™t want to find out if the rumors about how the military uses shifters is true
- The entire time heā€™s with Roba nothing scares him more than losing control of his emotions and shifting but eventually it happens when Roba cuts his face open and he reacts similarly to his dad
- Tests all kinds of horrible drugs on him and hurts him and makes him kill people in his jaguar form, by the time heā€™s buried he thinks heā€™s too injured to shift but he forces himself to do it one final time to dig himself out and escape
- After that he never wants to shift again but after hunting down Roba and killing all his men he transforms one final time to kill the man, tearing him apart desperate to show him that he didnā€™t truly master a jaguar the way heā€™d tried so many times
- He tries to shift after he gets shot by Sparks and Washington but for the first time instead of his body forcing it on him he canā€™t do it no matter how hard he tries
- Heā€™s too late to save his family, if heā€™d been able to shift he couldā€™ve saved them and the failure haunts him
- Itā€™s years before he accidentally shifts again in front of Price after a particularly grueling mission and the man is beyond shocked to suddenly find his sergeant turning into a massive black Jaguar
- Itā€™s takes months after that for Price to slowly help him break through his fears, he promises not to exploit his shifted form on missions but insists that he shift at least once a week for his own sanity, itā€™s dangerous to just ignore it
- He doesnā€™t have much choice but to agree but unlike for most shifters his form is no longer a safe place to hide or rest itā€™s just another reminder of the horrible things that have happened to him
- After that he stops caring about his Jaguar form and what happens to it, feels a sense of bitterness that this incredible ability couldnā€™t protect him and instead of shifting peacefully on his own he starts doing it on missions, just using it to kill as many hostiles as possible
- He knows the violence bothers Price on some level but the Captain never says anything when he rips people limb from limb with his teeth and transforms back covered in blood
- The first time Soap sees him shifted is in Las Almas when he brutally kills a few Shadows who tried to track them to Alejandroā€™s safe house
- Rudy is shocked and understandably cautious of the massive animal that just tore five people apart viciously but Soap looks reverent and almost excited
- Is very happy to realize thereā€™s another shifter on the team
- Isnā€™t the slightest bit intimidated by Ghosts shifted form and before he can even shift back heā€™s touching his broad muscled shoulders, stroking the black fur gently, whispering a brief praise to him for protecting them
- Heā€™s too shocked to shift back and Soap just casually leads him around to the side of the house where thereā€™s a hose
- He m apologizes for the water being cold and calmly washes the blood out of Ghosts fur while he stands there in shock
- He shifts back and they go on with the mission but he has no idea what to think about what happened and canā€™t get it out of his head
- Soap regularly interacts with him in his shifted form during and after missions and it becomes routine for him to give him absentminded pets
- On the battlefield Soap is the only one who specifically utilizes his shifted form in mission plans
- He gains his own reputation for having a trained Jaguar and there are some truly ridiculous stories passed around base about it
- Slowly over time he finds it normal to spend time with Soap while shifted but never outside of missions
- When Soap starts asking him to shift around the base in their rooms or the rec room he canā€™t fathom doing it for himself
- The first time he shifts around Johnny outside of a mission is when theyā€™re cuddling together on leave and itā€™s a complete accident
- Itā€™s very common for strong emotions to trigger a shift but for him itā€™s almost always been fear and the few times it wasnā€™t fear it was anger
- Heā€™s never shifted from a positive emotion so heā€™s shocked and beyond confused when he goes from purring into Johnnyā€™s chest wrapped in fluffy blankets while the rain pours down outside to laying half across his boyfriends body as his Jaguar self
- Soap is ecstatic and immediately shifts as well, curling into Simonā€™s much larger body and gently licking one of his paws, snuggling under his chin fearlessly
- They get fur and dog hair all over the bed but he doesnā€™t even care because it feels amazing to be shifted like this
- He hasnā€™t shifted once in his entire life where he was truly safe, even as a kid it was in the locked bathroom when his shifted form was still just a clumsy black kitten and he wanted to spend all his time in any body other than his own
- Itā€™s still painful but he starts opening up too Soap about his relationship with his shifted form and Johnny is absolutely devastated
- His border collie form is so precious to him and the stress relief of not having to think the way he does as a human, of just herding and protecting settles something inside him
- He canā€™t imagine being so viciously abused in his dog form that it became a trap of all the worst animal mentalities
- Instead of getting a more simplified thought process and the pleasure of giving in to more of his instincts and trapping people into giving him physical affection Ghost is stuck in the flight or fight of an abused animal, scared, violent, lashing out
- He makes it his lifeā€™s mission to get Simon relaxed and happy enough to have him shift from positive emotions
- It doesnā€™t happen too much at first because he still has so much trauma attached to his shifter form but slowly over time he can get Simon into a headspace where he shifts more often around their flat
- The first time it happens on base for any reason other than a nightmare is when heā€™s giving Simon a scalp massage, twirling his curls around his fingers and rubbing his fingers against his scalp while Si lets out deep rumbling purrs
- Heā€™s heavy enough when he shifts to half crush him but he doesnā€™t move much except to wiggle up enough that most of the weight is resting on his legs and not his stomach
- Simon always acts like he should be scared of him like this but itā€™s all he can do not to coo at him when he blinks heavy lidded green eyes at him and bats at his side clumsily with a heavy paw
- When the door opens Gaz letā€™s out a high pitched scream of shock and nearly jumps into Priceā€™s arms while Simon barely moves
- Itā€™s the animal mindset kicking in differently than fear and violence and panic and he recognizes it immediately as being how heā€™s always understood his shifted form
- Still very much human but fewer thoughts and more instinct, making it easier to let go of anxiety then it ever is as a human
- Price looks absolutely shocked to see Simon casually shifted, bumping his large black head against Johnnys side to get his attention
- He quickly goes back to petting him
- When he shifts back heā€™s clearly a bit unnerved by it but just says something along the lines of never letting Gaz live down his reaction
- Itā€™s months later that Johnny is having a difficult time with some recruits, just the type of people who like to pick at authority to try and make themselves seem tough
- Especially against the supposedly deadly SAS sergeant
- They know of Ghost and have heard enough rumors to be suitably terrified but they certainly donā€™t know how protective he is over Soap
- Rather than trailing around after Soap like his namesake and scaring all the recruits like he usually does if situations like this arise he takes a different route with this particular group after hearing Soap complain about some of the particularly unpleasant harassment heā€™s been facing
- Soap is halfway through yelling at the group of especially rude recruits when Ghost pads over to him and buts his head against the manā€™s chest
- Heā€™s so shocked he freezes and the recruits are scrambling away when Johnnys face breaks into a brilliant smile as Ghost head-buts his thighs and stomach a few times before looping his strong lithe body around Johnnys back
- Soap just continues yelling at the recruits who are now cowering because heā€™s just casually got a massive black Jaguar draped around him
- When he finishes yelling he gives them one more warning before writing them up for insubordination and the practically run away the second theyā€™re dismissed
- As soon as theyā€™re out of sight Johnny breaks out into the most delighted laughter and hugs Ghost as hard as he can, pressing kisses to his snout and beaming at him
- Ghost just pushes him down and paws at him for pets, purring and butting his massive head against his chest
- Since he doesnā€™t have anything to do immediately he walks towards Ghosts room and lets himself in with the spare key while the few people around stare at him being followed by a massive jaguar
- People notice of course but itā€™s a small enough base that despite the people filtering through regularly it really is the 141s base and anyone who knows anything knows itā€™s a bit unregulated and very much left to the discretion of John Price
- Not to mention theyā€™re too scared of Ghost to create any issues anyway
- So whatever chaos the 141 comes up with is mostly just ignored
- But people are definitely freaked out by a fucking Jaguar of all things just trotting after Sergeant McTavish through the hallways
- Soap of course thinks itā€™s hilarious and collapses laughing the second he gets the door closed
- Heā€™s so incredibly proud of Simon he just showers him with love the rest of the night, petting him, kissing his snout, snuggling into his chest
- It makes Simon feel more loved than he has in a long time when Johnny gets so excited at one point that he accidentally shifts as well
- They love being shifted together but they also love when one of them is shifted and the other can give them love in their human form
- Soap starts transforming even more to help Simon and he can see the man slowly becoming more receptive to his shifter form
- He doesnā€™t transform in front of people on base again and a lot of people think those recruits were making it up
- Soap thinks itā€™s hilarious
- But heā€™s also so flattered that Ghost would transform in a semi public place for him since he knows how hard it is for him
- He doesnā€™t expect that Simon will ever be as comfortable as he is with his shifter form but when he starts shifting more in front of Price and Gaz in the 141 rec room heā€™s ecstatic
- Price and Gaz never quite get used to it but thereā€™s nothing he likes more than seeing Simon sprawled across the couch in a patch of sunlight, tail flicking lazily as he licks him with his rough tongue
- But nothing is better than seeing Simon at home in there flat shifting comfortably just to get some pets, acting for all intents and purposes like a glorified house cat
- Heā€™s such an attention seeker when shifted, if Soap ignores him heā€™ll break mugs and vases on purpose which has him feeling absolutely humiliated when he shifts back and his thoughts are more human
- Sometimes he still shifts after nightmares and things and Johnny will cuddle him close and soothe him with kisses and snuggles as he yowls and whimpers like a trapped animal
- But overwhelmingly he shifts for positive reasons and on purpose which he never couldā€™ve imagined in the past
- It feels like heā€™s finally found the peace in his shifted form that he was searching for at five years old locked in the bathroom with clumsy paws, he feels like a kitten again with Johnny who is so sweet and attentive and everything he could ever hope for
- It affects their relationship significantly and theyā€™re both incredibly happy and they work well together
- Although they never escape the cat and dog jokes from the people who know about both of them

Alright, so long story short, my oc has a autism service dog (who is kind of also her familiar) and is a witch. What can I do to make this character realistic?
(sorry if this is vague, I have no other idea how to express this.)
Hi asker!
The most important thing would be to do research on service animals and how they specifically help people.
First, service animals are also a huge investment, both in terms of time and in terms of money. Owner training is expensive, but so can a professional trainer. Someone who gets a service dog via a charity will still be on the hook for things like food and vet bills. This means that someone who doesn't have enough time or money might not have a service dog because they're a pretty big commitment. They're not generally a first resort, because while they are very useful and can really help many people, they are also an alive being. And anything that's alive needs more care than things that aren't. Dogs have to eat and poop and pee and that needs consideration; and they can get sick, distracted, develop allergies to foods, and whatnot while machines can't. So thinking about how your character navigates these things will help them feel more realistic.
Not that you have to include or even know every detail of how they paid for training or how many hours they spent on it! But just knowing the general idea will be good.
Second, what tasks does the dog do to help your character? Basically, what does she need help with that the dog can do?
The International Association of Assistance Dog Partners has a list of tasks a service dog could perform for psychiatric conditions; it mentions depression, anxiety, and PTSD specifically but are not exclusive to those. From that list I'm including a couple that could be relevant to an autistic character, although it's in not exhaustive.
Bringing medication
Summon help from designated people
Assistance leaving an area by finding the exit
Providing deep pressure therapy to calm/ground handler
Help 'unfreeze' handler from dissociation or similar
The organization Ella's Animals also has a list of tasks a service dog for specifically autism could do; again, not exhaustive:
Providing deep pressure therapy to calm/ground handler (mentioned again!)
Trained tactile stimulation to ground handler
Behavior interruption, like of harmful stimming
Alerting handler of something they're not responding to
"Buffering" in crowds
Retrieving items
Alerting of elopement (NOTE: tethering and body-blocking are sometimes mentioned as something a service dog can do for autistic handlers, particularly children. But generally speaking, this shouldn't be done. It can be dangerous for the dog and the handler.)
You'll want to think of what tasks your character will generally need from their service dog, and while you don't have to describe them all in great detail, mentioning them when relevant will be pretty important and make your character feel more real.
Also, depending on your character's witchiness, too, you could add a little flair. Like maybe your character needs extra assistance after they cast spells because it's overwhelming, or they had to train the dog to recognize what they look like when they're casting spells so the dog doesn't interrupt!
I hope this helps!

Headcanons for Hotchner!daughter Service Dog
No one asked for it but here we are.
Inspired by the headcanons done by @ssa-thotchnerr on hotchner!reader emotional support dog
As someone who is a service dog handler, this topic is near and dear to my heart, especially service dogs who do psychiatric work. It's also important to me to address the differences between an ESA (emotional support animal) and PSD (psychiatric service dog) as they are two seprate things.
If you have questions about ESAs or Service Dogs send me an ask or a message! It's something I love to talk about and educate on!
Here we go:
CW: Foyet, Haley's death, counseling, medication, PTSD, PTSD symptoms, meanings to names
The whole thing with Foyet was traumatic. Being pulled away from your dad, being in witness protection, being told your dad was dead only to find out that he wasn't, your mom being killed- it was all too much.
Hotch was very proactive about getting you and Jack into counseling. Jack recovered from the events far faster and easier than you did.
After evaluation from a psychologist, they concluded you had severe PTSD.
You were talking to a therapist multiple times a week, taking medication, being open with your dad, even peer support groups, but after a year you still struggled immensely.
Panic attacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, depressive episodes, and avoidance still ruled your life.
Your medical team brought forward the idea of a service dog as an addition to the rest of your treatment.
You and your dad looked into it and decided it would be a good idea.
Until you looked at the price of training or getting a program dog and it was going to be upwards of $15,000 (really closer to $25,000) or at least two years on a non-profit waitlist. Some options were both.
Thank god for the "anonymous donation" from Uncle Dave.
You and your dad met with the program. They had you meet a few different dogs that were ready for task training, but ultimately you were matched with a solid black female german shepherd.
"She's from our outer space themed litter. Her name is Comet, after Halley's Comet."
That had you and your dad in tears.
It would still be months before she would complete her task training, but you got to see her when you went to do handler training.
She finally finished her training with the program and got to come home to complete it with you!
At first, having Comet almost made things worse.
People would point and stare, little kids would scream, rude people saying things like "you don't look disabled", "I thought only veterans could have PTSD", access issues, even some of your friends who didn't want to bring you along on activities anymore since you'd have Comet with you.
But it forced you to be a bit brave and learn to stand up for yourself and her.
And her tasks made your life so much better and gave you so much more independence.
Comet would "search" the apartment for strangers before you entered, so you could come home alone without Hotch or Jessica having to be there.
If you were home alone, she would bark when someone came into the apartment and go check to see who it was. If it was someone she knew, she would stop barking and come back to you, but if it was a stranger she would continue barking so you could call your dad and ask who was supposed to be coming to the apartment.
When you had nightmares, she would wake you up before they got really bad. This improved the sleep quality of everyone in your family.
Comet would alert you before you had a panic attack so she could perform deep pressure therapy and you could use your coping skills to try to make it less intense.
If your panic attack did get intense, she would do a "take down" to put as much pressure on your body as possible and gently lick you until you calmed down.
In the after-fatuige of an attack she would take you to a quiet place to recover and continue to provide pressure therapy.
If it happened when your dad was home she would get him to help you through it.
She would annoy you at certain times of the day to remind you to take your medications, sometimes even fetching the bottles for you.
When you would cry alone she would just starting bringing you anything she could find - water bottles, papers, pillows, dirty laundry (usually bras because it made you laugh) - so you didn't have to be alone with your feelings.
She would stand behind you and alert to people approaching so you didn't get startled.
Sometimes would provide "checks" around corners if you were having a really bad day with hypervigilance.
Having Comet opened up an entire new world for you, making you feel safe without having to have your dad or your aunt with you.
She wasn't a replacement for your therapy or medication, and the public could still be extremely rude. Sometimes you did leave her at home if you were going somewhere that it would be hard to accommodate her and you had your dad to help you incase anything happened.
But she gave you independence that you didn't have before and made your life so much better.

šŸ‘‹ hiiii!! I love your writing sm, btw!!! Iā€™ve re-read a lot of your stuff!
If possible it would be so cool to see Sniper with a reader that has a service dog for their anxiety! Iā€™m probably going to end up needing one in the future, so yeah šŸ‘ if you choose to write this, I would recommend just quick videos on psychiatric service dogs, itā€™ll quickly explain all the tasks they do.
I also had a couple ideas that you might want to use:
- he would probably have a hard time trying not to pet the dog or make eye contact considering he loves animals and nature
- might think heā€™s the cause of the dog needing to do tasks, which is sort of true, but the reader explains they trouble talking to almost everyone
Just a few things about how anxiety affects people who need service dogs for it:
- makes it really hard to go anywhere without someone else
- dogs can remind their handlers to eat, drink water, and go to bed
- they can give deep pressure therapy (lying on top of them, basically) if their handler is stressed
Sorry if this is a bit long, I just wanted to avoid any confusion or misunderstandings about service animals and what they do, and of course, feel free to completely ignore this, but yeah. Tysm if you end up writing it!!
Cool little fella
Tumblr media
So, yeah, the moment he laid eyes on your service dog he wanted to pet it. He lifted his hand to approach it so the dog could smell him, but the only answer he received was you smacking his hand away.
"Hey!" He complained, rubbing his hand. "Do you like to be distracted from your work?" He denied it with is head, still confused about the free agression. "Then, leave the dog be." You said as you walked away with your pet. After that interaction he got it and he was more careful around your dog. He even smacked Scout whenever he tried to distract you dog.
You always thank Sniper with a small kiss as he smiled with a dumbfounded smile and a red face. "It was nuthin', dear..." He says as he hides behind his hat.
Now, him and the dog are the responsibles of reminding you to eat, drink water, go to bed...
If it's not the dog, then it's Sniper. They are like a team. The dog nudges you to remind you to eat and before you can leave your seat; Sniper is already entering the room with a Sandwich he asked Heavy to make and a glass of water.
Whenever the dog detectes that you're nervous or starting to feel anxious, it leads you out of the room and makes you sit on the floor so it can lait it's head on your lap. You still don't know if it's because he's jealous or something, but Sniper always, and I mean always, manages to find you with your dog and sits next you. He offers his hand to you and when you lace your hands together he feels proud.
He doesn't know how to help you, so he somehow copies the dogs actions. He's too afraid to ask you about how to help you whenever you feel like that. Just smile at him and kiss his cheek.

I just saw the post SERVICE DOGS HCS PLEASEEE !!!
HERE WE GO GANG! These are the one's I have so far! Feel free to suggest recs for any characters or disabilities y'all wanna see! (feel free to rec it even if it's for a character on the list)
STAN:
Service Dog: Brown Newfoundland, Delta (F)
Psychiatric Alert & Response Dog
Disabilitie(s): Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Minor PsychosisĀ
The hair dye oh my god. He can rarely drag himself out of bed during depressive episodes but occasionally heā€™ll get a random burst of impulsivity and re-dye his hair. Most of the time he does the same shitty job at bleaching it blonde
ā€œDARLING! GUESS WHOā€™S BACK FROM THE PSYCH WARDā€ vibes
Sharon and Randy officially divorced when he was fifteen. He got a little better now that there isnā€™t constant screaming or the threat of a drunk or high Randy doing something stupid
Donā€™t get me wrong, heā€™s still a total mess-
Patched his relationship with Shelly
Misdiagnosis club AND public breakdown club
God his entire aura just radiates LOSER energy but heā€™s somehow insanely popular
Not cousins with Craig & Red in this AU but their parents are insanely close so they hang out a lot
CRAIG:
Service Dog: Irish Setter, Saturn (M)
Medical Alert & Response Dog
Disabilitie(s): Epilepsy
Lowkey autistic but Saturn isnā€™t task trained for anything related to that
Goes non-verbal at times but itā€™s pretty spontaneous. Most people outside his group canā€™t tell if heā€™s actually non-verbal or just not talking to fuck with everyone
Peru drama was secretly worked out when they were twelve. Craig was hospitalized for a while when they were running tests to get a diagnosis, it was roughly a month long stay. He told Stan heā€™d call it even if Stan looked after Stripe until he was out. Tweek was away for the summer and he knew Stan wouldnā€™t let anything happen to her since heā€™s a massive animal lover
Gotta maintain the bitch personalityĀ
TWEEK:
Service Dog: Doberman, Latte (M)
Psychiatric Alert & Response Dog
Disabilitie(s): Chronic Anxiety,
ā€œAh fuck, the magic school bus is waiting outside to take me back to rehab-ā€
I kid you not, he was absolutely terrified of Latte when he first got him
Which is funny because Latte is the sweetest goddamn thing, not at all like Fable whose a fucking demon shit
CPS was called on his parents right before senior year
Placed with the Broflovskiā€™s so he and Kyle got closer
Public breakdown club
BUTTERS:
Service Dog: Boxer, Haven (F)
Psychiatric Alert & Response Dog
Disabilities: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Depression
Public breakdown club (IN DEVELOPMENT)
KYLE:
Service Dog: Black Giant Schnauzer, Noble (M)
Medical & Psychiatric Alert & Response Dog
Disabilities: Diabetes, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)[This one might be switched]
Tubie Kyle (I fucking LOVE this one)
For once I give Kyle an ED that doesnā€™t stem from body image issues
Humancentipad trauma bc I love being problematic about the episode
DESPISES his lows because it means he has to eat something
Also goes non-verbal but only during times of high stress
Noble is a program dog. Kyle got him when he was 14 and initially he was so against it. He wants to function independently but he really fucking canā€™t. As he grows older he learns to accept the help more
HATES mirrors. The Humancentipad incident left him with scars
Public breakdown club
KENNY:
Service Dog: Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Harbor (M)
Medical Response & Mobility Aid Dog
Disabilities: Muscular Dystrophy, Chronic Pain
Regularly hospitalized, fucking dies, and revives the next day
DUMPSTER DOG<3333
He trained Harbor mostly by himself (Wendy, Tolkien, and Kyle pitched in a bit and bought him books on training techniques)
MOM FRIEND! Bro I just love making Kenny one of the parental figures of the group. Heā€™s just got a bag of shit he carries around for both himself and everyone else. Stan forgot to swap his bandages? Boom, Kennyā€™s got new ones. Kyleā€™s sugar is low? Boom, heā€™s got whatever little snack the boy is able to tolerate. Someone needs a distraction? I'm honestly not sure if I've mentioned this on here before, but here we go.
I've been looking into getting a service dog for a few years. What breed would be best for the tasks I need, if I should get a program trained dog or if I should owner train, what it costs to get said service dog and anything they need or would like, how to take care of a dog, what are the laws around service dog prospects and housing, what are the laws for service dogs, etc. etc.
Up until now, it's all been more of a thought experiment than anything else because my father established a "No Dogs Under My Roof" policy a long time ago, and despite a service dog being medical equipment, the answer to if I could get one is a hard "Not Under My Roof"
But! We're finally down to the last year or two of community college before I transfer to a 4 year where I'll be living on my own and can thus get a dog. So I'll be looking into breeders to see what their wait lists are like and check to make sure the breeder I decide to go with is actually an ethical breeder.
I've debated on breeds for a while. Poodles are hypoallergenic but require a lot of hair maintenance and will matte up fairly quickly if I forget to brush them due to a flare-up, so they're a no. Doberman seemed like a good fit as they met most of my requirements. However, I was informed that they're a velcro breed that are very protective, which makes sense since they are breed to be guard dogs, but that doesn't work if i need a strangers help. Goldens and labs are quite similar in most things regarding my list of requirements but didn't end up being my final choice.
I've decided to go with German Shepherds for the breed, as I need mobility, medical alert, and psychiatric tasks. That's quite a bit for one dog, but German Shepherds are breed specifically to be working dogs with varying jobs, so while I'll need to be careful with training to keep them from burning out as a puppy, they're my best bet.
I've decided on owner training supplemented with a professional trainer's support/assistance.
The mobility tasks in question aren't weight bareing, and even if they were, I'm aware that type of training doesn't start before the vet okays it around 2 or so years old. Sometimes, my vision stops working, or I'll get horribe brain fog making me very confused, and I can't bend down to pick things up off the floor unless I'm sitting, so think along those lines for mobility tasks.
The medical alert is for POTS and maybe migraines. I'm not sure how migraine alerts work yet, i still need to look into that one, but I know how to do the POTS ones.
The psychiatric tasks are to tell me if I'm displaying anxious habits cause I don't notice them and can't feel when I am due to a disconnect in my brain from physical reaction and emotional reaction. I react physically but can't emotionally, which means i can have the bodily reaction of a panic attack and all the issues that creates but I think im perfectly fine. Which is oh so fun to deal with (can you hear the sarcasm?) Plus a few other things I don't feel like sharing that I need help with.
If anyone has anything helpful to add, please do. I've looked into things, but research can only get you so far

A service dog for Ben
My name is Ben (33 years old) and after 20 years of mental health treatment, I have been discharged from further treatment. For years, I have been struggling with ADHD, Autism, and PTSD. The latter causes me to have multiple dissociations on a daily basis, which are attacks where my body continues on autopilot, and I am not aware of what I am doing. This can lead me to walk into traffic and come face to face with a car. Furthermore, I experience non-epileptic seizures where my legs give way and I fall to the ground. This happens to me in public on the sidewalk, but also along train tracks, in the middle of an intersection, and in other dangerous places. I am also regularly pulled back into flashbacks, old unpleasant memories or emotions. And my nights are filled with nightmares. The happy, creative, adventurous animal friend who enjoys walking, writing, and taking trips with friends has been locked away. Due to my disabilities, I live in isolation and my world has become ever so small.
But there is hope. My dream to reclaim my life as a thirty-something-year-old, expand my social network again, return to work, and spend time with family and friends can come true. How?
Through the help of a psychiatric service dog. I'll dog myself with the guidance and aid of a professional assistance dog school. This is a task I am capable of thanks to my background as a certified veterinary technician with experience in raising assistance dog puppies, and an internship at a police dog training academy.
The dog will alert me in time when an attack is coming, allowing me to go to a safe and quiet place to sit. The dog will be trained to fetch and bring my medication on time, wake me up and provide support during nightmares, lie on top of me to calm me down through pressure on my body, and prevent me from harming myself by licking my hands.
With the dog by my side, I can go out on the street again, visit family and friends, go on outings, do groceries, return to work, and resume living life.
But the training for this dog is costly. It amounts to around 11,000 euros for the training and acquisition of the dog. The health insurance company does not cover this type of assistance dog, and the WMO (Social Support Act) does not provide reimbursement for this process either. Hence, the request if you would like to make a contribution.
Every little bit helps. I greatly appreciate any donations and/or sharing of this donation drive.
For Americans and others that have trouble donating through the platform, I can also receive donations through Paypal or Ko-fi.

ESA VS PSD/SD
So just gotta vent here.... My own doc has messed up. I have a Service Dog (SD), She alerts to both cardiac (POTS) and psychiatric issues (AuADHD, CPTD). I'm getting all the documents together so that I can apply for disability so I asked my PCP who should write the letter confirming that I need a SD for my updated records (my doc and psych supported me but we never got the letter ironed out.). Hes like "Dont worry Ive got it" and normally this guy is right. He is awesome 99% of the time. I got the letter today saying I need an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) who stays with me at all times. ESA do not get public access, no training is required and they are not required to do any task to mitigate disabilities. SD (or Psychiatric SD) must be able to behave in public, and have a specific task meant to mitigate a disability. My dog was originally trained as a PSD, She wakes me. Grounds me in a flashback. Tells me Im starting to get anxious and gets me to pet her to re-regulate. Presses herself into my neck to help try to lower panic/flashback episode lengths. She also comes and sits on my chest when I am trying to deal with my anxiety. She then discovered that I had POTS. She would pull me aside before my vision went and get me to sit down. We shaped this into a legit alert (she nudges and can jump up on me and we do "check in" to tell me how bad a heart-rate spike or panic is). She then will press to my neck/lay on my chest till the dizzy spell passes. Shes a full fledged service dog at 3 years old. Shes saved my life. We spent years training her. ESA being confused for SD is a big issue and has lead to way more untrained dogs in public putting my trained SD in danger. Weve been lunged at and chased down by big dogs Ive had to knee out of the way to keep her safe. People think that ESA have public accsess but they dont, they only are at home and dont need any training. SD require legally to have some training and tasks to help mitigate disability. In Most service dogs have liberal training in a variety of situations. My girls on her way to getting the AKC CGC and UCGC titles when we can afford it and has passed Advanced Obedience with flying colors. She has a whole suit of tasks that she dose. She is under the legal definition a SD. As a result for all of that training, all of the hours and hours of work, is public access. She behaves unobtrusive and safe in public. She is able to task in public and Is the only reason I am at all able to leave the house safely. We worked really hard to get her to this point (she worked really hard to do it as well!). Its really important to be labeled properly.

Some PTSD unpredictability awareness for you tonight
Once again not ignoring my DMs or inbox!! I have just been in a terrible PTSD episode (again šŸ˜ž). I had complications with my workplace and couldn't bring my service dog with me to work. It messed me up BIG time. It's settling now, but right as I got over one episode, I was thrown into another one.
Take a guess as to how this one happened.
Ready for the answer?
A stranger grabbed my shoulders from behind me to move me out of the way of a bike.
This small gesture caused me to wake up dizzy, lightheaded, and unable to see. I had terrible flashbacks for two days straight, let alone I can barely remember Saturday-Monday this week. My blood pressure significantly dropped from dissociation.
One of my large triggers is being approached from behind (especially by men) and/or touched. This small act basically throws my brain into a survival instinct to which it shuts down and dissociates to avoid experiencing trauma. Usually, with my service dog with me, she has a block/guard task where she stands behind me to notify me if someone is approaching me from behind and takes the ease off me from having to constantly look over my shoulder. This episode was caused directly because I didn't have my service dog with me at the time. My workplace underestimated my PTSD and I couldn't have my service dog that day because they hadn't approved her to come in with me yet.
I missed two days of work following this incident because I could not drive due to vision complications from low blood pressure caused by my dissociative episode.
PTSD does not discriminate. I am a 21 y/o feminine-presenting person who is tall and muscular and appears to be able-bodied due to my high levels of athleticism. I speak clearly and I'm an extrovert who enjoys talking to anyone and everyone. I am also not only federally disabled for my progressive PTSD, I am severely auDHD, and fight a chronic disorder (PCS).
I am constantly asked or demeaned for why I have a service dog. It's not only uncomfortable for me, but really a lot of times "why do you need a service dog" is said to me in a condescending tone. Disabilities are often invisible. Stop assuming strangers are non-disabled based on their outer appearances. Stop asking us what we need our medical devices for. Stop touching our medical devices. Stop calling young people or women with PTSD "sensitive" or "weak." Stop treating our psychiatric service dogs like emotional support animals.
Anyway. Thank you for reading to the end. Obligatory picture of my certified good girl. <3
