a few updates. we have reproductive rights in arizona, colorado (including public funds), maryland, missouri, montana (with limits), nevada (with limits), and expanded equal rights protection in new york including pregnancy status and outcome, but none in florida, nebraska, and south dakota.
increasing wages in alaska and missouri to $15, and those two + nebraska are mandating sick leave, but massachusets isnt ending tipped minimum wage and california didnt increase their minimum wage or allow for more rent control.
(medical) marijuana was decriminalized in nebraska but not (medically or rectreationally) florida, north dakota or south dakota. massachusets didnt legalize psychedelics.
arizona is requiring life with no parole for sex trafficking and tightening their criminal penal system for immigrants (and fentanyl), californias reclassifying misdemeanor theft and trafficking as felonies and elevating rehab, and colorado is taking away the right to bail in first degree murder cases and increasing the sentence-served requirements for parole in violent crimes.
all-party primaries and ranked-choice voting lost in every state they ran in: alaska, arizona, colorado, idaho, missouri (just ranked choice), montana (just primaries), nevada, oregon (just ranked choice), and south dakota (just primaries). but dc went for ranked choice and independent primary votes.
every state that ran a ballot measure about restricting votes to citizens (+ non-minors) voted it in: idaho, iowa (18+), kentucky, missouri, north carolina (18+), oklahoma, south carolina (18+), and wisconsin (18+).
same-sex marriage was codified in california, colorado, and, soon, likely hawaii. were still waiting for more votes from california on this (>50% votes in so far and its slightly leaning towards keeping it) but nevada outlawed involuntary servitude. massachusets just barely made the cut to allow gig workers to unionize and oregon is broadening labor rights in the marijuana industry.

WHAT MUSIC THE BAD BATCH WOULD LISTEN TO ACTUALLY THIS IS THE DEFINITIVE VERSION I'm kidding this is my very humble opinion. anyway let's go
Hunter — this man is the epitome of classic rock to me, (I know this is not a new take) but in much more of a AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rainbow and Thin Lizzy way more than anything. I also see him being a lowkey Hendrix fan, and dabbles in some of the more psychedelic stuff from that time, a little Jefferson Airplane perhaps ('wish you were here' is his fav Pink Floyd album). I've been on the record saying that ZZ Top wrote 'sharp dressed man' about him and I stand by that, but I also see him rocking out to 'black night' by Deep Purple in particular
Wrecker — I see him getting on with most things, anything that gets him moving honestly, which is why I think particularly disco is his bag. man loves Donna Summer I'm telling you. I also see some acoustic guitar stuff there too: country, folk & singer songwriter stuff for when he's not up and dancing. big Johnny Cash guy from start to finish, every song. prefers the Creedence Clearwater Revival version of 'proud mary' (despite loving Tina Turner)
Crosshair — grunge. post-punk. garage rock revival. I'm talking The Strokes, Radiohead, Pixies. perhaps The Smiths thrown in there too. he likes Nirvana but he's not vocal about it because they're too 'popular' to be seen liking. he's pretentious but he keeps it to himself. 'boys don't cry' by The Cure hits home for him. secret Bowie fan but you couldn't torture that information out of him.
Tech— he will listen to anything that makes him think. he's analysing all the time. anything from Wagner to the Velvet Underground to math rock. in my minds eye he's a Dire Straits fan, and it's not so much a secret as he just doesn't let on. he appreciates the value of music in the same way as wrecker though, thus, one of his favourite songs is 'move on up' (the extended edition only) by Curtis Mayfield. the groove + the talent of the players + the interesting harmonies and rhythms, to him it's the perfect song. he's interested in the technological developments that brought in new genres and is fascinated by 80s music, as well as recording techniques like on 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band' (but it's not his favourite Beatles album, that would be 'Revolver' ofc)
Echo— a big fan of anything soulful, singers are the main appeal for him. he loves listening to a rich voice. Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone right up to Florence + the Machine, Hozier and Adele. also has a thing for britpop, and he's more in the camp of Blur over Oasis, but he likes both. musical theatre enjoyer on the downlow. 'before he cheats' by Carrie Underwood is his go to karaoke song, and he cleans up every time (he's the best singer, but Wrecker still gives him a run for his money)

Tim and Richard Butler of The Psychedelic Furs as captured by Chester Simpson in 1981 in Wasington DC.
tampabay.com/: "With 1981's Talk Talk Talk, The Psychedelic Furs began the transition from vaguely sinister art-rockers to the shiny new-wavers who would crack the Top 40 with 1987's Heartbreak Beat. As such, it might be the album that brings together fans of the band's disparate phases. It retained the jagged edges of the eponymous 1980 debut album, but with a greater emphasis on melody and song structure. Plus, it contained Pretty in Pink."

Right, damn, I always get mixed up because I unload all th comics like a week in advance.... Today is the release of Absolute Martian Manhunter issue #1! And it is fucking EXCELLENT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you're a DC fan you're probably familiar with J'onn J'onzz as the shape shifting telepathic Martian refugee with a love of Oreo cookies and a somewhat underappreciated ability to go toe to toe with some of the Justice League's heaviest hitters, including Superman.
But in his earliest incarnations, John Jones was a police detective in middle America, solving crimes while keeping his Martian identity and powers under wraps. It wasn't until his inclusion in the original Justice League of America that he began shifting away from his secret identity toward being the Martian superhero publically and fulltime.
This is where Absolute MM takes us back to basics: It's the late 1970s. The psychedelic era is on its way out the door and the FBI is still going thru some.of it's formative growing pains --Psychological profiling is a cutting edge new field of criminology. Agent John Jones is in the middle of a case that just put him in the hospital and as he staggers back to his office to resume his overburdened caseload he realizes this near death experience has left him with something more than just a concussion... He has a kind of powerful and involuntary psychic synesthesia, he can take in thoughts and feelings wafting off people in the form of a psychedelic smoke that only he can see and smell, and a voice that only he can hear.
It's a little bit of the vibes of, like, Mindhunter crossed with Ultraman. Deniz Camp, author of the ongoing Marvel's Ultimates has a strong showing behind him when it comes to reimagining the classics for a relative new comer to the business, and Javier Rodriguez absolutely kills it in the art department.
The plan is a 6 issue mini unless the sales numbers really blow editorial out of the water, so be sure to give it a fair shot and buy a copy if you like what you see!

type o negative in the 10th anniversary collectors edition of Unrestrained! Magazine (2007),
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(COURTESY OF BIGGESTBADDESTWOLVE ON REDDIT)
transcription:
Peter Steele says he’s a "souldier," a "tool of God." And as that tool, Steele (who's best known as the bassist/frontman of Type O Negative) claims it’s his duty to transmit God’s unpopular message any way he can — whether that’s through “rock and roll or heavy metal or graphic design, or skywriting.” Funnily enough, Steele also believes rock and roll’s not doing its job if it’s not pissing someone off, and Type O Negative has been raging proof of that belief for the past 18 years, offending anyone who dares take them or their music seriously. Now the band’s catalogue of tongue-in-(ass)cheek rudeness has a new entry.
Dead Again is Type O Negative’s seventh full-length aural offense, a “bipolar” combination of everything the band has already done, ranging from “14 minutes of falling down the ember of the earth” to “two and a half minutes of hyper-caffeinated crap,” as Steele describes it. Like a psyche patient with multiple personalities, Dead Again is an album of many faces, a cannibalistic patchwork quilt of Steele’s numerous influences — bands like the Beatles, Black Sabbath, Cro-Mags, AC/DC, and the Psychedelic Furs. As Steele readily admits in his distinctive Brooklyn accent, “I steal from a wide variance of sources.”
Equally distinctive is the atavistic rumble that is the Type O Negative sound, fine-tuned with cluster bomb precision Steele and keyboardist Josh Silver bring to nearly every Type O Negative release. “Poverty,” says Steele when asked why he and Silver are the best people to record and produce their band, adding, “I don’t need someone to come in and tell me what to do with what I hear in my head.”
Despite Steele’s ever-looming presence on every Type O Negative song, Dead Again features, literally, more voices, including guest vocalist Tara Vanflower (Lycia) on Halloween in Heaven.” Silver and guitarist Kenny Hickey sing more as well, something Steele urged them to do. “Threats go a long way,” he says. “Josh and Kenny have very good and very distinctive voices and I just believe they are underutilized. I felt that it would add and extra dimension to the band, playing off of each other, verse/chorus, whatever the case was, harmonies… I pretty much busted their nuts and said ‘c’mon man, you can do it,’ so they did it. I think it came out pretty well.”
Though he’ll offer the odd straightforward assessment of Type O Negative’s music, Steele emphasizes he can’t be objective about any of his own songs, and his opinion isn’t immune to revision — including, for example, his previously expressed dissatisfaction with the band’s 1999 record World Coming Down — an album he has since come to appreciate. “When we were writing and rehearsing World Coming Down I had a pretty big problem with cocaine and alcohol, and I disassociated myself from the recording process. I was, at first, disappointed with it, but in hindsight the brutality of the mix kind of reflects how I felt about things at the time.”
Not that Steele has been feeling exactly sunny about life since then. “My mother passed away about a year and a half ago and it made me realize my own mortality. I’m pretty pissed off that I’m getting old and that I’m going to die,” he says (moments after declaring himself “unfortunately immortal” and bound to be doing the music thing “for infinity”).
Dead Again reflects an abundant dose of that negativity, labeling abortion “infanticide” and declaring that there would be no peace until the state of Zion converts to Christianity (“These Three Things”), or prophesying the “beginning of the end” of the world (“Profits of Doom”) — just to list a few of its messages. But even though this is no heart-warming record, Steele still argues that it’s potentially uplifting: “I wrote this album intending to steer people down the right path. Isn’t it better to learn from someone else’s errors than from your own?” Of course, he also bristles at even the thought of someone telling him that it’s “not PC,” declares the people who get offended are the “real assholes,” and adds, “I’m just a lousy bass player from Brooklyn.”
For a “lousy bass player,” Steele and his fellow assholes from Brooklyn — Silver, Hickey, and drummer Johnny Kelly — have still accomplished a lot, including achieving Roadrunner’s first platinum record (Bloody Kisses) and gold certification for the video release After Dark. When asked if those accomplishments meant anything to him, Steele answers, “I’m actually more impressed with my criminal record,” and claims the high point of Type O Negative’s career will probably be “the day the band breaks up.”
He claims it’s not only “masochism” that keeps him going, but Steele wouldn’t erase any of Type O Negative’s past even if he could: “It has been an adventure, a journey, and a learning experience. I like how this forthcoming album has turned out, and if anything was eliminated from the past this album could not be the way it is, and I would not like for that to happen.” And because we’ve still got, as Steele assures me, another 21 years before the beyond-nightmarish apocalypse arrives, Type O Negative is bound to have a future as well. Steele sees no reason to end it: “The whole attitude of rock music seems to be the younger generation is tolerating geriatric rock and rollers. I’m over the hill, but i’m not down the hill yet.”
