"What do you remember of being human, Echo?" The question is out of the blue and unexpected. But Sora offers a patient smile and tilts her head in curiosity, just enough that one of her ears flops over. It's endearing, if anything.

But Echo wishes she hadn't asked.

"Not much. Distinct memories are cloudy." A tired tone says softly, a pained recollection in her eyes and an acrid haze in her soul that endures, endures, and endures, "But I remember the discomfort more than anything. My body always did feel wrong back then. Misshapen. Condensed. Like it was too small for everything buried underneath, and that ache went so deeply some days that it would make my skin crawl. I hated that part the most."

At that, Sora's expression falls. She looks inexplicably sad, as if she'd hoped for a different response, a gentler one despite knowing the harsh truth about the dark future and the struggles Echo must have suffered. "But you had Grovyle, right? I'm sure he took care of you."

"He did, Sora, of course he did." A sigh, a flick of an ear and claws clenched tightly into the churned earth pressed under her paws. "I doubt I deserved his attention, though. I was too busy being angry at the world to give any care back."

In my lore, Echo does not look fully human during their time in the dark future. Since they were Darkrai before becoming human, and as a result of Palkia's reckless shattering of the Dimensional Portal which distorted both time and space, Echo's transformation was broken and accidental. They ended up looking pretty messed up and definitely (not) human. A lot of their characteristics as Darkrai carried over but rather morphed into something else.

And Grovyle, growing up in a world where humans have been extinct for longer than any living pokémon has been alive, has no concept of what a "true" human looks like. The only thing he knows is descriptions of humans from glyphs and texts in old ruins. Thus, he mistakes Echo for an actual human. And Echo, not knowing what a human looks like themselves due to amnesia, accepts this identification with nothing better to use.

Finally finished this stupid comic based off a stupid dead meme and a stupid dream I had. Fuck me, fuck everything, enjoy the shitpost

Unwavering loyalty is all well and good but at what point does it become insanity? What is too much? Is it okay to kill and grieve and hurt out of loyalty? It is okay to want? Is it okay to then take that loyalty and turn it into a love that is so deep and so immovable that it changes everything?

And does the answer change if the person has never asked for that loyalty? If they have only ever asked for a friend?

Okay, finished Death and the Maidens and uh, yeah. Everything I saw that said it was fucking terrible was right. Absolutely hated it. -10000/10.

There was exactly 3 things about all of that I liked:

The concept of Nyssa as Talia's older half sister that's been running around doing humanitarian efforts for centuries (and literally nothing else about her backstory because holy fucking shit what).

The single moment of Talia being happy and enjoying herself and briefly vulnerable and open about how she doesn't have many friends (could have truly been some great character moment stuff in something else)

Alfred's sass.

That's it. That was everything I enjoyed about that story line. What the absolute fuck did I just read?

Anyway, uh. I'm gonna take the 3 things I liked about the story, try to scrub the memory of literally everything else, and work out what I would have liked to see happen with Nyssa & Talia instead and figure out how to incorporate that into a fic.

this is just smth I've been thinking abt lately because I've been seeing posts talking abt how transfems and transmascs often see themselves in similar/the same characters. and that it might make less sense for transmascs to see themselves in these characters because the character themself struggles with masculinity or being forced into a box.

While I do think this can be true in some cases (especially those where it REALLY wouldn't make sense with the character's backstory that they would've been allowed to transition at all) I think a lot of the time it still does make sense, because as a transmasc most of my time having come out to someone, they expect me to immediately fall into toxic masculinity or whatever it is they feel like men should be doing, and if I reject this or any part of it, I'm ungrateful. I either let them treat me that way, or I'm not man enough or aren't trying hard enough to not be misgendered. If I'm going to say I'm a man, I should at least act like it and pretend to enjoy or accept what they give me and the box that they defined.

I know transfems experience this sort of thing too, even if in different ways! I just was musing on why transmascs often relate to characters who struggle with masculinity too.

i think it'd be neat if dotc was a time of bloodlusting monsters that roamed the earth casually and it was glorified by the clans in the modern day since they're, yk, violent now obviously dotc has Clear Sky and One Eye and whatever the hell Slash is but it can always be more complex yk? like, there's sexual assault (it can be considered such) in that arc, why do we need to murder women and come to the shittiest conclusions ever "Slash can't love-" sure he "can!" he "loves" his group! It would be neat if the narrative never tried to redeem Clear Sky, and if he never tried to redeem himself, because he doesn't believe he needs redeeming but his loyalists forgave him anyway (cough cough Gray Wing the bootlicker) and tried to convince others to do the same, with varying degrees of success I see a lot of "Star Flower would be great as a villain" and i can see it, but i'd prefer if she was merely an antagonist following in her father's footsteps instead of a villain

she could be redeemed, but not everyone wants redemption, and i can see her struggling to take it. antagonists can be irredeemable without being villains! (check this out (each word is a different link!))
