Throughout the semester we have been talking about technology and all of the influences it has on our everyday lives. Many things we’ve talked about have been about technopanics, 3D printing and new ways of making things, bioart and cyborgs, new and improved prosthetics, insanely powerful AI’s and new medical advancements. A lot of the references listed below follow the same style of writing where they first introduce the idea of what they are talking about. After, most sources go in depth more into what the topic is and how they work and what the topic actually does like new prosthetics being able to recreate the feeling amputee’s haven’t been able to feel since losing their limb. After describing what the technology does it goes to explain the pros and cons of what the topic is talking about. This structure is the best way to introduce the topic to the reader because it gives the reader background knowledge on the topic then evolves on that to give the readers better get a better in depth understanding of the topic.Most of these articles follow the traditional mindset that technology is good for oru ever evolving society but some challenge that ideology. Some articles especially the ones describing head transplants and cryogenics challenges whether that these new technologies are good or whether they give people a false hope for technology and medical advancements that are not yet completely refined and perfected.

Most other articles followed the mindset that technology is actually better for society since it fits societal needs and makes life more efficient. In that case of the IoT or the internet of things, this explains how that now all devices can be connected to a network to talk to each other and work in unison to make the consumers experience using these devices easier and more pleasurable. This is extremely beneficial but most of these articles try to omit the fact that since all these devices are connected they tend to be more easy to infiltrate and tamper with since once you break into one device all others are compromised. This is a smart tactic to advertise these devices since we learned that most of society has a problem at first with adapting to new technological innovations.

All of these general topics seem to all follow a common trend. They all seem to connect in some way or another. In one case the internet of things connects with the idea of techno panics since people tend to fear for their security of their things and information that can be easily lost when the internet of things is compromised. Another link between these topics is how that newer amputations are a direct reflection of how new things are made such as 3D printing. Many newer prosthetics can be 3D printed to avoid any inaccuracies that could happen with man made manufacturing. New prosthetics also tie into how newer medical technology is making peoples recovery and better living can be obtained. One of these that is really interesting is how that someone that is on the brink of death can be put in suspended animation and robotic arms can be used to perform life saving surgeries and eliminate the chance of human error and having more jagged incisions which makes recover times longer than the standard now.

Another topic discussed this semester was the evolution of things called bioart where living tissue is used as medium instead of common mediums like paint or pencils.  This ties directly into techno panics again since most people find the idea of using living tissue or in one instance, growing a human ear on the back of a mouse, people can find this “bioart” repulsive. This new “bioart” has formed a small technopanic that some people think that bioart simply shouldn't be a thing.

Another topic that cross reference each other are new advances in medical technology like new subdermal implants to make people like cyborgs and and head implants that require this technology to be implemented to make sure that these transplants aren't attacked by the bodies immune system.

In conclusion, all technological advances relate to each other in one way or another. For instance, almost all new technology goes through a short techno panics stage until people know how good the product is and if the costs out weigh the benefits. Also technology is ever evolving off of older technologies or to make the human experience more efficient and fulfilling. These products are also talked about and advertised omitting and including selective criterion the make these products appealing or exactly the opposite and negatively affect the sale value of these products.

about me + questions

I’m ben and I’m a 19 year old PAPR major Sculpture minor. I’m from Richmond. Some of my favorite teachers have been Valerie Molnar, Thomas Burkett, Jordan Marty, Ryan Lauterio, and Teto Elsiddique. Outside of art making I work at Proper Pie Co., love to cook, and play music. 

What is the power in the world that you most want to transform or overthrow and why?

One power in the world that I would like to help change is the power of blind consumption. The way that American capitalism has allowed both consumerism and materialism to develop in the last century has in my opinion created a culture of consumption that does not benefit our society nor is sustainable. I would like to see more people think about the implications of what they are consuming, the whole costs of these things on both their own lives and the rest of the world. This idea applies to everything we do, not just the things we purchase. It affects and is affected by the lifestyles we choose to live, the culture we choose to accept and participate in, the things we waste, and the things we create. I still have a lot of learning to do about this subject, but it is definitely something that has been on my mind.

If everything goes you’re the way you wish it would at this moment, what will you be doing two years after you graduate?

I hope to be living in a larger urban area with a low cost of living, renting out a large warehouse studio space with friends, living with little money but making the most of my time. I would be working on my artwork, trying to progress and survive. I will be working part time to fund myself while intermittently finding ways to travel, including touring (I play music as well) and trying to get residencies or grants. Through this lifestyle I hope to expand horizontally rather than vertically, amassing friends and connections across the country or the world, trying to establish a large network of like minded people.

What is your fantasy working/studio environment? Where is it and what does it look like?

My fantasy studio is a large run down warehouse in an industrial part of a low cost urban area that I could afford to lease with a large group of close friends and like minded artists. It would be a space that could be used for art making of any kind, with a chaotic but organized library of materials. It would also be used for music as a practice space, recording studio and show space. It would be in an area where things could get wild without bothering anybody, but set up safely as to not place anyone in danger or risk being shut down by the authorities. Living in the space may be an option but has its pros and cons, as does living separately. Cities that come to mind are New Orleans, Philly, Baltimore, and Atlanta, but I plan on spending time now traveling to have a better idea where the right place is. It would be cool to stay on the east coast because of the proximity to the New York market, but there’s no way I could afford to live in NYC, plus I want to be somewhere with a less established existing scene.

Can you name three specific experiences you’ve had in your life that you would be curious to transform or feed into an artwork?

Memories leading up to and after my parents divorce and how that affected my relationships with my family members, growing up in a poorer area and going to school in notoriously bad public schools, especially being a straight white male (until high school when my experience drastically changed). And finally dealing with anxiety and other mental / emotional problems that have developed over the course of my life.

Do future technological developments excite or scare you? Or both? How?

Definitely both. It is exciting to live in a time of rapid technological changes, such as the internet, medical advances, space technologies, robotics, AI, and countless more, and all of these things have so much potential for progress. But it is also nerve racking to think about how we’re going to see them affect humanity on a cultural level, if they will be used for good or for bad, or if they will unintentionally harm ourselves. We are kind of existing in a massive experiment, waiting to see what happens. With it we could save or destroy the environment, stop violence or kill more, connect the whole world or eliminate personal connection. We will see many of these questions answered in our lifetimes, and we will be a part of the equation.

What kinds of learning environments are/have been most exciting for you?

Learning environments that are demanding and rigorous but also understanding of personal limitations. I want to be pushed, and the best classes I’ve had were the ones where everyone was pushed. Class participation is crucial, and it helps to create an environment where everyone can become friends and feel comfortable being honest with each other. Risk taking should be encouraged. A balance of technical information and conceptual workouts always feels good to me. Mutual respect for differing opinions is crucial. And one of the most important things for me is keeping it active, not letting it get static. I personally get very restless when I sit still for too long so I like to be up and working with my hands or having to be deeply engaged in a conversation vs. sitting for a lecture. Not that lectures and stuff like that aren’t often necessary, but I still like for it to be a conversation.

If you were to conceive of one art assignment/prompt for yourself what would that be?

A habit forming project: For one month, every day spend 1 hour working on the same project, 1 hour making something new, and 1 hour reflecting. Keep a journal to write in for this month, as proof of the reflection, and document each hour with photos or videos. At the end of the month, write a 2 page paper describing what you made and what you learned.
