I did just a little work on the Megakingdom of Simland yesterday and today. I finished King Malcolm Landgraab IV’s castle--at least, it’s as finished as it’s gonna get before he acquires some more funds. I added a royal bedchamber, private bathroom, public bathroom, royal nursery, and a very sparse vault in the basement. There’s room for four more bedrooms on the second floor, and then there’s a whole third floor and a whole basement, so it will be some time before he NEEDS to move to a bigger castle.

...and the royal nursery.
I also gave the DeBateaus and the Goodies medieval makeovers, and started on the Newsons and building the church where the Goodies are going to raise the Newsons.
Tumblr media
Duke Armand DeBateau of Belladonna Cove, looking much finer than I expected! Since his wife is... gone, he will need to marry in order to produce a proper heir, and the most likely prospects are Lady Natasha Una, cousin to the Duke of Desiderata Valley, or Lady Erin Beaker, sister to Lord Loki Beaker of Strangetown.
Tumblr media
Lady Tara DeBateau of Belladonna Cove! She might end up marrying Lord Puck Summerdream of Veronaville; it will depend on whether she or Lady Ophelia Nigmos of Strangetown gets along better with him.
Tumblr media
Mother Superior Faith Goodie, of the Belladonna Cove church that I randomly named St. Simian’s. I hope to get a church in each subhood someday, but for now this is the only one.
Tumblr media
Father Herbert Goodie. I’m not 100% on the tonsure, but it certainly screams monk.
Tumblr media
Gavin Newson. Although he wears the garments the church provides, he hasn’t actually taken any vows yet. Most likely, he’ll pledge his service to a local lord as soon as he’s ready to age up, but we’ll see.
Also note the awful trailer park and billboards and street I need to replace, ugh.
Tumblr media
And Ginger Newson, same deal as her brother. Also, gotta say that this is my first time using good default replacement skins and eyes that I picked out to suit my taste, and they sure do make everyone nice and pretty!
Here’s a couple shots of my in-progress church. I might have to wait until they have collected some tithes to finish it, big lots are expensive to fill man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I need to raise the height limit in this subhood and top off the tower, put in a bunch of windows, furnish the interiors to be livable, and set up some gardens for the church to use to sustain itself and occasionally sell. Lower priority is adding lots of columns and decoration to the outside walls, sealing in the property behind a fence, putting a local cemetery in the back left and a public garden in the front left, and, well, anything else I think of. Right now, though, they only have $5000 left. I’m debating whether to just give them what they need to finish construction and call it a donation or something, or to play them at the tail end of the round and see how much they managed to collect from tithes. I guess the deciding factor will be whether they can afford sufficient beds, a bathroom, and a kitchen with the current funds... Although I do still need to move Jessica Peterson in (somehow), and perhaps her funds will help.

The Greatest Travel Movies Of All Time
There’s something special about a great travel movie that can make a person want to hit the road in search of adventure. If you’re in the mood for a travel movie that will change your life or just give you a long night of laughs, check out the ones on this list. Be warned, there are plenty of spoilers ahead.
The Beach
Director: Danny Boyle
Year: 2000
Notable Actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel York, Virginie Ledoyen
Tumblr media
Originally a novel written by Alex Garland, the movie version of The Beach managed to maintain most of the story’s shiftlessness, paranoia, and struggle for authenticity.
It’s primarily a movie about people searching for a place in the world that hasn’t already been over-crowded by tourists. Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio) gets a map from a deranged person at a seedy Bangkok hotel. The map promises exactly what Richard has been searching for: a place unspoiled by humans.
When he and a few friends find the hidden island, they discover that it’s almost Eden… except for the heavily armed pot growers who barely tolerate the beach-living hippies.
The Beach does more than give viewers the thrill of travel. It questions what we expect to get out of travel and whether that thrill still exists in a well-mapped world. You can watch The Beach for free at 123movies here.
Easy Rider
Director: Dennis Hopper
Year: 1969
Notable Actors: Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda
Tumblr media
Easy Rider explores the American cultural landscape during the 1960s. The story follows Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper), two nonconformists willing to give anything a try as they ride their motorcycles from Southern California to New Orleans.
Along the way, they encounter all types of people, including communal hippies who spend their days smoking pot and living freely, rednecks who harass them, and a hard-drinking lawyer who gets them out of a small town jail.
By the movie’s end, it’s obvious that living free means living on the razor’s edge, a place where you can die at any moment.
National Lampoon’s Vacation
Director: Harold Ramis
Year: 1983
Notable Actors: Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Randy Quaid, Anthony Michael Hall
Tumblr media
Follow the Griswold family as they drive from Chicago to Walley World, a theme park located on the West Coast. This is one of the funniest travel movies ever made. Chevy Chase’s performance will make you wonder how the actor lost his comedic edge for so many years.
During the Griswold’s road trip, they encounter plenty of colorful characters and get themselves into outrageous situations. Anything that could go wrong does go wrong:
Clark (Chevy Chase) accidentally kills the family pooch The family gets lost in the desert An elderly relative dies midway through the trip The final insult breaks Clark’s already fragile psyche: when they reach Walley World, they find that the park is closed. Clark loses his mind, buys a gun, and forces a security guard to let his family into the empty park. They get to enjoy the rides for a while. But the cops eventually show up, prompting Clark to give a moving speech that somehow keeps them all out of jail.
Up
Director: Pete Docter and Bob Peterson
Year: 2009
Notable Actors: Edward Asner, Bob Peterson, Joran Nagai
Tumblr media
Up is a heartwarming story about an old man, Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner), who refuses to leave his home even though a real estate developer constantly threatens to force him out. Throughout his life, Carl has been a homebody unwilling to take many risks. His wife, however, always encouraged him to take chances. They saved for decades so they could afford an adventurous vacation.
After his wife passes away, Carl loses interest in life.
During an argument with a construction worker, Carl accidentally punches a worker. This forces him to move into a retirement home. Carl refuses to give up, though, so he fills a large number of balloons with helium so that his house will float away.
Unbeknownst to him, a young Boy Scout named Russell (Jordan Nagai) is on his property. The balloons take Carl and Russell to South America, where they meet a pack of talking dogs and their master, a world traveler whom Carl idolizes.
Things turn sour between them when Carl’s hero tries to catch an exotic bird in Russell’s care. The adventure turns into a race to save the bird, their own lives, and the spirit of living freely.
Encounters at the End of the World
Director: Werner Herzog
Year: 2007
Notable Actors: Werner Herzog, Scott Rowland, Stefan Pashov
Tumblr media
Werner Herzog has made plenty of documentaries and movies in exotic places, but none of them have the charm, humor, and adventure of Encounters at the End of the World. In this film, Herzog and his crew travel to Antarctica to meet people living outside of social norms.
The team meets plenty of interesting characters, including animal researchers, a scientist studying neutrinos, a diver with an extensive sci-fi movie collection, an a pipefitter who has a hand anomaly that, he says, proves he is Aztec royalty.
It’s an interesting look at the kind of people who choose to live in a place as frozen and harsh as Antarctica. It also has magnificent images that will make viewers yearn to visit one of the planet’s coldest places. While watching the film, Antarctica seems like a viable vacation plan.
The Motorcycle Diaries
Director: Walter Salles
Year: 2004
Notable Actors: Gael Garcia Bernal, Rodrigo de la Serna
Tumblr media
When Che Guevara was a 23 years old, he and his friend Alberto Granado decided to travel across South America on motorcycles. At the time, Che was known as Ernesto Guevara de la Sema. He wasn’t a revolutionary leader. He was a med student with one semester of study left.
The Motorcycle Diaries uses Che’s journal entries to explore the difficult relationship he had with his friend, the difficulties of traveling with little money on old motorcycles, and, perhaps most importantly, how Che learns from Communists that he meets in Chile. It’s a journey that changed the young man’s life forever. It’s also an entertaining movie about adventure and self-discovery.

Tiny Town, Big Decision: What Are We Willing to Pay to Fight the Rising Sea? AVON, N.C. — Bobby Outten, a county manager in the Outer Banks, delivered two pieces of bad news at a recent public meeting. Avon, a town with a few hundred full-time residents, desperately needed at least $11 million to stop its main road from washing away. And to help pay for it, Dare County wanted to increase Avon’s property taxes, in some cases by almost 50 percent. Homeowners mostly agreed on the urgency of the first part. They were considerably less keen on the second. People gave Mr. Outten their own ideas about who should pay to protect their town: the federal government. The state government. The rest of the county. Tourists. People who rent to tourists. The view for many seemed to be, anyone but them. Mr. Outten kept responding with the same message: There’s nobody coming to the rescue. We have only ourselves. “We’ve got to act now,” he said. The risk to tiny Avon from climate change is particularly dire — it is, after all, located on a mere sandbar of an island chain, in a relentlessly rising Atlantic. But people in the town are facing a question that is starting to echo along the American coastline as seas rise and storms intensify. What price can be put on saving a town, a neighborhood, a home where generations have built their lives? Communities large and small are reaching for different answers. Officials in Miami, Tampa, Houston, San Francisco and elsewhere have borrowed money, raised taxes or increased water bills to help pay for efforts to shield their homes, schools and roads. Along the Outer Banks — where tourist-friendly beaches are shrinking by more than 14 feet a year in some places, according to the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management — other towns have imposed tax increases similar to the one Avon is considering. On Monday, county officials will vote on whether or not Avon will join them. This despite the reality that Avon’s battle is most likely a losing one. At its highest point, the town is just a couple dozen feet above sea level, but most houses, as well as the main road, are along the beachfront. “Based on the science that I’ve seen for sea-level rise, at some point, the Outer Banks — the way they are today — are not forever,” said David Hallac, superintendent of the national parks in eastern North Carolina, including the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which encompasses the land around Avon. “Exactly when that happens is not clear.” The Outer Banks have a rich past. Hatteras Island, originally home to members of the Algonquin tribe, is near the site of the so-called lost colony of Roanoke. A few miles north and several centuries later, the Wright brothers flew their first airplane. And it is the vulnerability to the sea — the very threat Avon is wrestling with today — that, in a twist of fate, helped transform the Outer Banks into a tourist spot, according to Larry Tise, a former director of North Carolina’s Division of Archives and History. In 1899 a terrible hurricane all but destroyed the islands, and the state decided not to spend money developing them. Land speculators later swooped in, snapping up property and marketing the curious local history to attract tourists. Today, tourism dominates Avon, a hamlet of T-shirt shops and cedar-shake mansions on stilts lining the oceanfront. A few blocks inland sits a cluster of modest older houses, called the Village, shaded by live oaks, Eastern red cedars and wax myrtles. This is where most of the remaining lifelong Avon residents live. Audrey Farrow’s grandmother grew up in Avon and met Ms. Farrow’s grandfather when he moved to town as a fisherman in the late 1800s. Ms. Farrow, who is 74, lives on the same piece of land she, and her mother before her, grew up on. Standing on her porch last week, Ms. Farrow talked about how Avon had changed in her lifetime. Vacationers and buyers of second homes have brought new money but have pushed out locals. And the ocean itself has changed. The water is now closer, she said, and the flooding more constant. The wind alone now pushes water up the small road where she lives and into her lawn. “If we’ve had rain with it, then you feel like you’ve got waterfront property,” she said. From any angle, the reckoning for Avon seems to be drawing nearer. Over the past decade, hurricanes have caused $65 million in damage to Highway 12, the two-lane road that runs along the Outer Banks and connects Avon and other towns to the mainland. The federal and state governments are spending an additional $155 million to replace a section of Highway 12 with a 2.4-mile bridge, as the road can no longer be protected from the ocean. Hatteras Island has been evacuated five times since 2010. County officials turned to what is called beach nourishment, which involves dredging sand from the ocean floor a few miles off the coast and then pushing it to shore through a pipeline and layering it on the beach. But those projects can cost tens of millions of dollars. And the county’s requests for federal or state money to pay for them went nowhere. So the county began using local money instead, splitting the cost between two sources: revenue from a tax on tourists, and a property tax surcharge on local homes. In 2011, Nags Head became the first town in the Outer Banks to get a new beach under that formula. Others followed, including Kitty Hawk in 2017. Ben Cahoon, the mayor of Nags Head, said that paying $20 million to rebuild the beach every few years was cheaper than buying out all the beachfront homes that would otherwise fall into the sea. He said he could imagine another two or three cycles of beach nourishment, buying his city 20 or 25 more years. After that, he said, it’s hard to guess what the future holds. “Beach nourishment is a great solution, as long as you can afford it,” Mr. Cahoon said. “The alternative choices are pretty stark.” Let Us Help You Understand Climate Change Now the county says it’s Avon’s turn. Its beach is disappearing at a rate of more than six feet per year in some places. During the meeting last month, Mr. Outten described Avon’s needs. As the beach disappears, even a minor storm sends ocean water across Highway 12. Eventually, a hurricane will push enough water over that road to tear it up, leaving the town inaccessible for weeks or more. In response, the county wants to put about one million cubic yards of sand on the beach. The project would cost between $11 million and $14 million and, according to Mr. Outten, would need to be repeated about every five years. That impermanence, combined with the high cost, has led some in Avon question whether beach nourishment is worth the money. They point to Buxton, the next town south of Avon, whose beach got new sand in 2018, paid for through higher taxes. Now, most of that sand has washed away, leaving a beachfront motel and vacation rentals teetering over the water. “Every bit of it’s gone,” Michael David, who grew up in Avon and owns a garage in Buxton, said during last month’s meeting. “We’re just masking a problem that never gets fixed.” Speaking after the meeting, Mr. Outten defended beach nourishment, despite its being temporary. “I don’t think we can stop erosion. I think we can only slow it down,” he said. In interviews with more than a dozen homeowners in Avon, a frequent concern was how the county wants to divide the cost. People who own property along the beach will benefit the most, Mr. Outten said, because the extra sand will protect their homes from falling into the ocean. But he said everyone in town would benefit from saving the road. To reflect that difference, the county is proposing two tax rates. Homeowners on the ocean side of the road would pay an extra 25 cents for every $100 of assessed value — an increase of 45 percent over their current tax rate. On the inlet side, the extra tax would be just one-fifth that much. Sam Eggleston, a retired optometrist who moved to Avon three years ago from outside Raleigh and bought a house on the western side of town, said even that smaller amount was too much. He said that because Highway 12 is owned by the state, the state should pay to protect it. If the government wants to help, Mr. Eggleston argued, it should pay people to move their houses somewhere else — a solution he said would at least be permanent. “To keep spending millions and millions of dollars on the beach, to me doesn’t make sense,” he said. That view was not shared by people who live on the beach. When Carole and Bob Peterson bought a house on the ocean in 1997, it was protected from the water by two rows of huge dunes, Ms. Peterson said. Years of storms have washed away those dunes, leaving their 2,800-square-foot home exposed to the water. Ms. Peterson acknowledged that she and her neighbors would benefit the most from rebuilding the beach. But the rest of the town should be willing to pay for it too, she said, because it protects the jobs and services they depend on. “People that live over there, on that side, don’t understand that the beach is what keeps them alive,” she said, pointing across the road. “If you don’t have this beach, people aren’t going to come here.” Audrey Farrow’s son, Matthew, a commercial fisherman, said he worried about the future of the place he grew up in. Between the flooding and the demand for vacation homes, which continues to drive up real estate prices, he said, it was getting harder to make a good life in Avon. “I’m telling my kids already,” Mr. Farrow said, “go somewheres else.” Source link Orbem News #Big #Decision #Fight #pay #rising #Sea #tiny #Town

Anxiety grips companies across the world as virus spreads WASHINGTON Since breaking out of China, the coronavirus has breached the walls of the Vatican. It's struck the Iranian holy city of Qom and contaminated a nursing home in Seattle. And around the world, it's carrying not just sickness and death but also the anxiety and paralysis that can smother economic growth. From Florida, where the CEO of a toy maker who can't get products from Chinese factories is preparing layoffs, to Hong Kong, where the palatial Jumbo Kingdom restaurant is closed, businesses are struggling. The virus has grounded a British airline, and it's sunk a Japanese cruise-ship company. The cumulative damage is mounting. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development this week slashed its forecast for global growth for this year to 2.4% from 2.9%. It warned that Japan and the 19 European countries that share the euro currency are in danger of recession. Italy may already be there. Capital Economics expects the Chinese economy to shrink 2% in the January-March quarter and to grow as little as 2% for the year. That would be a disastrous and humiliating comedown for an economy that delivered a sizzling 9% average annual growth rate from 2000 through last year. The bleak outlook and nagging uncertainties about how severe the damage will be have shaken financial markets. The Dow Jones industrial average, gyrating wildly from day to day, has plummeted nearly 12% over the past month. “The virus is going to go on, and it’s going to impact a lot of countries and economies,’’ said Sondra Mansfield, who owners Chalk of the Town in New York City, which makes T-shirts and tote bags that children can write on with chalk. With global supply chains disrupted by quarantines and travel restrictions, Mansfield worries about maintaining access to the supplies she needs — T shirts from India and Honduras and markers from Japan. “I think it will get worse before it gets better,’’ she said. When COVID-19 emerged in China a few weeks ago, many economists envisioned something like what happened when SARS hit China and Hong Kong in 2003: A short-lived interruption of Chinese economic growth, one that left the global economy largely unscathed. Yet the new virus has spread far faster and more widely than expected. Between November 2002 and early August 2003, SARS infected 7,400 people in 32 countries and territories and killed 916. By contrast, COVID-19 has infected more than 100,000 people and killed more than 3,400 in 90 countries. And the toll is growing. “This is not a China issue anymore,’’ said Jacob Kirkegaard, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Business travel in the United States has slowed sharply in the face of the outbreak. Numerous large companies, including Amazon and Google, are restricting non-essential travel. The result is a dire financial blow for the travel and tourism industries — from airlines and hotels and restaurants to cruise ship companies and conference centers. Some airlines, including United, have cut back on flights both within the United States and internationally. The industry, already reeling from the grounding of Boeing’s 737 Max, stands to be severely damaged by the viral outbreak, especially if travelers stay away for months to come. In Europe, Germany's largest airline, Lufthansa, says it will cut up to 50% of its flights in the next few weeks, having suffered a drastic drop in reservations. The struggling British airline Flybe collapsed last week as the outbreak quashed ticket sales. Air France and Scandinavian Airlines are freezing hiring and offering unpaid leave and shorter work hours as they endure a drop in passengers and cargo. The pullback in air travel has led to the cancellations of high-profile conferences, from the Geneva auto show to a global health conference in Orlando, Florida, to South by Southwest, the annual festival of music, film and technology in Austin, Texas. Those cancellations, in turn, are dealing financial setbacks to the cities that normally host them and count on the financial windfalls they bring. Amusement parks are being hurt by the sudden reluctance of people to travel and mingle with crowds. Disney’s Shanghai Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland remain closed. Other theme park companies, like Six Flags and SeaWorld Entertainment, will likely suffer, too. As more people stay home, some small pockets of the U.S. economy could benefit, including food delivery outfits, video conference companies and entertainment streaming services. Most of corporate America, though, is vulnerable, and earnings growth is likely weakening. Oxford Economics, noting the “darkening outlook," puts the odds of a U.S. recession at 40%. Last week, the Federal Reserve announced a surprise half-point cut in its key interest rate to try to aid the economy in the face of the coronavirus. The Fed is expected to cut rates further in coming weeks, though economists question whether that will do much to bolster investor or consumer confidence. Central banks in Australia, Canada, China and Japan have also acted to support their economies. The European Central Bank is expected to announce its next steps this week. The virus and the measures meant to contain it have choked the supply chains that companies around the world had come to rely on. Chinese authorities locked down Wuhan, the industrial hub at the center of the outbreak, as well as surrounding cities. Stranded by travel restrictions, millions of migrant factory workers who had returned to their home villages for the Lunar New Year couldn’t get back to work. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development said last week that a shortage of industrial parts from China, caused by the coronavirus outbreak, has triggered a “ripple effect” that sent exports from other countries tumbling last month. The Yayuan Toy Factory, which makes plastic cars in the southeastern Chinese city of Yiwu, remains shut down. The factory’s 12 workers had gone to Shanxi province in western China and Guizhou in the southeast for the New Year holiday — and haven’t made it back. Executives of Salus Brands, a company in Tempe, Arizona, that sells swimming-pool floats and bottles of slime, fear that deliveries from its Chinese factories won’t arrive in time for summer vacation. "If we can’t get product in stores by Memorial Day week or shortly after, we lose our season,” said Dave Balkaran, the company president. “Sadly, it’s the small and medium-sized enterprise that will get hurt the most and the soonest,’’ said Andrew Shoyer, a former U.S. trade official who is a partner at the law firm Sidley Austin. Larger companies, he noted, are more likely to have other suppliers to draw upon if some factories are disrupted. Jay Foreman, CEO of the toy company Basic Fun in Boca Raton, Florida, said he is being forced to lay off 10% of his 175-person global staff. That's because factories in China can’t deliver enough of his products, which include Tonka Toys and Care Bears. China's factories are allocating most of their reduced production to giant toy companies and squeezing out the little players like him, Foreman said. “I am getting vendors who are actually encouraging me to (make smaller) orders because they’re trying to spread out the capacity,’’ Foreman said. “I don’t want lower orders. I want higher orders.” In Hong Kong, downtown streets that are usually jammed on weekdays are eerily empty and homeowners are unloading property at steep losses. Some hotels say they are 90% empty. The virus is depressing tourism in South Korea and Japan, which have been severely hit by the outbreak. Fujimisou, a traditional Japanese inn in central Japan, had managed to fend off bankruptcy by catering to Chinese tour groups — until they stopped coming. Also filing for bankruptcy was a famous maker of potato croquettes in Hokkaido and the Luminous Cruising Co. It was crushed by cancellations after an outbreak of virus cases aboard the Diamond Princess, a Carnival Corp. ship that was quarantined for weeks offshore from Yokohama.

SustainableEHC plans Tree Summit
EGG HARBOR CITY – SustainableEHC, the city’s green team, will be holding a Tree Summit, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30 at Egg Harbor City Hall, 500 London Ave., to discuss and share information about the city’s tree canopy.
Following the removal of more than 75 mature trees to accommodate new streetscape projects, green team members are holding the summit to discuss how the city can restore its tree canopy by planting new street trees and share information about how residents can obtain free native trees to plant on their properties.
“The city is known for its tree lined streets,” SustainableEHC Chairwoman Nanette LoBiondo Galloway said. “It’s important to maintain the city’s character, enable wildlife to have a home in native trees, and assist homeowners with the cost of energy by planting shade trees in the right location.”
The prior City Council administration removed all the street trees during streetscape projects over the last five years and did not replace them. The recently-seated City Council has changed how the city conducts its streetscape projects and will maintain existing tree cover to the greatest extent possible and only remove trees that are diseased or dangerous, Galloway said.
“This is good news for those who enjoy the beauty mature trees provide, but even better news for residents who reap the benefits of having tree-lined streets and shade trees that reduce their home energy costs,” Galloway said. “It will also help the city get the most bang for the buck when planning new street improvement projects.”
The summit will include a preview of the city’s most recent Community Forestry Management Plan prepared by forester Ron Farr of Farr Forestry Services of Newfoundland. The grant-funded study details how the city should maintain its tree canopy over the next several years. Having the CFMP enables the city to apply for new grants to fund future tree plantings and maintenance.
The city was the recipient of a $30,000 grant to replace the 109 street trees lost in the freak derecho storm of 2012. Beautiful new trees, many of them native species, have been planted at the rear of Lincoln Park, Charles L. Spragg School and along New York Avenue leading to Cedar Creek High School. The city is currently within the two-year maintenance period and will be eligible to apply for new grants after the maintenance period ends.
The summit will also include an overview of how Atlantic City Electric, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, trims trees to ensure the safety of its delivery system and its workers. Ken Mosca, the company’s liaison for local government and community relations, and Brittany Peterson of the Vegetation Management group, will share information about the electrical power grid delivery system and how important it is to plant the right tree in the right location.
Finally, the green team will share information about an Arbor Day Foundation program that can provide free trees to residents, along with an interactive online application that helps residents cite a pre-approved tree species on their property that provides the greatest energy savings.
Refreshments will be served. The summit is free, but registration is required.
The summit is the second in a series of free programs in the green team’s third annual Spring Environmental Series.
Upcoming programs include caring for orchids with third generation orchid grower Beth Davis of Waldor Orchids of Linwood on May  7, the Tuesday before Mother’s Day. A limited number of orchid plants will be available for purchase ($18-40).
For the final program in the series on Tuesday, May 28, Atlantic County Master Gardener Horticulture Manager Belinda Chester will give an overview of gardening in small spaces, focusing on vegetable gardening in containers, raised beds and vertical gardening.A “Pot Party,” which includes planting your own container garden, will be held in Peace Pilgrim Park following the presentation. Plants and soil will be available, but you must bring your own pot. All events start at 6:30 p.m. at Egg Harbor City Hall.
Register for all events at www.sustainableehc.org/events or call 609-457-2514 for more information.

URGENT U.P. Breaking News Bulletin – 4-26-18 – 6:20 p.m. ET –
The ugly truth: Domestic violence cases not only happened daily in the U.P. – but sometimes up to 50 victims a day (3 cases in each of the 15 counties)
Heather R. McEntire
Robert Dale Helsten
Jack Alan Orhanen
Heather McEntire and John Gray
By Greg Peterson U.P. Breaking News Owner, News Director 906-273-2433
(Marquette County, MI) – There were numerous domestic violence arrests in past 24 hours plus other felonies arrests in Marquette County involving a concealed weapon and even felony drunken driving – and breaking in Escanaba – a woman charged with DV in January calls 911 from a place she is not supposed to be.
As we were about to post this story, a domestic dispute erupted in the city of Escanaba – that shows domestic violence aggressors can be any sex – and sometimes jilted love drives some people to become repeat offenders.

Heather McEntire and John Gray
43-year-old Heather R. McEntire of Escanaba, MI called 911 just before 5 a.m. ET Thursday morning and claimed she was assaulted by a man she was not supposed to see. During this morning’s melee, McEntire was out on bond for a Jan. 15, 2018 arrest for domestic violence in Delta County.
Tumblr media
John Gray
The victim in that assault – 47-year-old John Robert Gray of Escanaba, MI – told 911 this morning that Heather and her brother attacked him.
As part of McEntire’s pretrial bond, she was ordered to stay away from Gray and not to visit his home.
Heather’s brother 46-year-old Jason Parker McEntire of many addresses in Delta County.
McEntire is also known as Heather Sirois; and she used to live in Bark River, Green Bay and Knoxville, TN.
Gray claimed that the siblings McEntire illegally arrived as his apartment at 416 First Avenue South “came in and assaulted him,” the dispatcher told responding officers.
About 5:30 a.m. today, Heather McEntire and John Gray wre both arrested on several charges including domestic violence – and both are lodged in the Delta County Detention Center.
——-
Marquette Police responded just after 10 p.m. ET Wednesday night to a report of a possible domestic violence situation turned into hit and run. The incident was reported at 700 Homestead St in Marquette, MI. “Responded to a domestic situation that has now turned into a hit and run PDA (property damage accident),” the dispatcher told police headed to the scene not far from Grove Street and the bypass. In the rear parking lot, a witness told 911 dispatchers that “a male and a female were involved in a domestic situation,” the officers were told via radio from HQ. The blonde female ‘got in a white Jeep” and “sped out of the parking lot to get away from the male,” officers were told. The male got into an older red passenger car and “was leaving in a hurry,” a 911 dispatcher to responding officers The male, now a suspect, “apparently struck a black in color car in the parking lot,” he said, adding that due to darkness the exact make and model of the red car was not visible. The red car should “have front and rear damage,” the dispatcher said. The witness told police that the couple was involved in a previous domestic situation about one month ago. On the east side of the apartment building, police found a damaged red Ford Taurus. Its is unclear what became of the investigation.

Frank Melton
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frank Ervin Melton (March 19, 1949 – May 7, 2009) was the mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, United States, from 4 July 2005 until his death on 7 May 2009. Melton, an African American, defeated the city's first black mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr. Melton won 63 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary against Johnson, who had served two terms. Melton quickly swept into action to rid Jackson of white on black drug-related crime, improve economic development, and improve city infrastructure. Since Melton became mayor, he touted economic-development projects totaling over $1.6 billion, creating at least 4,500 jobs in the city. Others pointed out that many of those projects were in the works when he started in office. However he was embroiled in several controversies while being mayor, including questionable power breaches and criminal misdemeanor activity.
Early life
Melton was born in Houston, Texas on March 19, 1949, to his parents Herbert Melton and Marguerite Haynes-Melton, both of whom were active members of the University Presbyterian Church in Houston. Prior to graduation from high school and following in the grid-iron footsteps of one of his earlier Booker T. Washington Eagles quarterback idols, Eldridge Dickey (Tennessee State Univ., Oakland Raiders), Frank was a popular, studious, and disciplined Quarterback for the Eagles. Melton graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He moved to Nacogdoches, Texas to earn a BA at Stephen F. Austin State University. In college, he took a position with the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, serving as Director of Recreation at its Lufkin State School.
Early career
He entered broadcasting after graduation, first as a Sports Anchor for KTRE TV in Lufkin, Texas and then, in 1977, as general manager of KLTV TV. He climbed the ranks at KLTV TV before becoming president of Buford Television, Inc. In 1984, he became Chairman and CEO of WLBT TV Inc, in Jackson, Mississippi, in which position he remained until 2002.
Melton served as the head of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics for 14 months, appointed by former Mississippi Governor Ronnie Musgrove in December 2002. Governor Haley Barbour, who defeated Musgrove in the 2003 gubernatorial election, dismissed Melton and other holdover political appointees when he took office. Melton also served in numerous other fields, including serving as the director of the Governor’s Criminal Justice Task Force, after being appointed by former Governor Kirk Fordice.
Melton served on the national board of directors for the Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI), the Liberty Broadcasting Board of Directors, and the NBC Affiliates Board of Directors. He served on the Liberty Broadcasting board of directors; the Wave board of directors, the Community Broadcast Group, and the NBC Affiliates board of directors.
Community work
Melton also worked as a member of the board of directors for United Way and the Jackson Chamber of Commerce. He was an instructor at Jackson State University. He gave numerous speeches in the inner-city high schools and city universities.
As mayor
Melton led drug sweeps and drug raids. The city's narcotics unit was reduced and few drug arrests were made. Many citizens were pleased to see him take this hands-on and vocal approach to addressing the city's problems. Yet many city residents, including the NAACP and the ACLU, have disagreed with the mayor's crime-fighting tactics and what they call illegal and unconstitutional actions. He wore a Jackson Police Department badge and carried a gun.
In April 2006, Melton lambasted Hinds County District Attorney Faye Peterson because she would not put his star witness, Christopher Walker, on the stand to testify against Albert "Batman" Donelson, the alleged leader of the Wood Street Players. The district attorney had to drop Walker from the witness list because the defense provided affidavits showing that Walker had long lived with mayor. Melton had given Walker a copy of his credit card, a car, cash and other assistance. The mayor responded that he was offering Walker "witness protection."
Soon after Donelson was acquitted, Melton held a press conference with Walker, during which he accused the county's first black female district attorney of having an affair with a murdered bail bondsman, an allegation that was not substantiated. Within days of that press conference, federal investigators revoked Walker's probation because he had failed nearly a dozen drug tests during the period leading up to the Donelson trial.
After a series of articles and photographs appeared in spring 2006 showing that Melton was carrying concealed firearms without a permit, and amid increasing editorials calling for authorities to curtail Melton's actions, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood investigated Melton's actions. On June 1 Hood sent Melton a letter warning of prosecution if he continued to carry weapons into places where they were prohibited, further warning him he was not a police officer. Melton told the Jackson Free Press that he did not have to heed Hood's warning, and continued to carry weapons wherever he wanted. In late July 2006, the head of the ACLU racial profiling division arrived in Jackson to address reports of racial profiling related to Melton's raids and techniques.
In September 2006, Mayor Melton, with his detective bodyguards and a group of youths, called the "lawn crew" because they traveled with Melton, ostensibly to help with neighborhood clean-up, raided half a duplex on Ridgeway Street without a warrant. Witnesses say that Melton attacked much of the rental duplex with a large stick. He cut his hand during the incident and had to go to the hospital for stitches. He reportedly returned with the young men, with sledgehammers to finish destroying that side of the duplex. Police arrested the tenant, Evans Welch, on drug possession, but he was discharged within days for lack of evidence. No warrant was issued for the raid, nor was the owner of the duplex—Jennifer Sutton—notified of any intention to conduct the raid or damage her property. After news of the demolition broke on Sept. 1, both the attorney general and the district attorney investigated the incident.
Melton and bodyguards Michael Recio and Marcus Wright were indicted on September 15, 2006, on multiple felony charges in the Ridgeway Street demolition, including burglary, conspiracy and the inducement of a minor to commit a felony. Melton was also indicted on three gun charges—a felony for carrying his weapon onto a college campus, two misdemeanors for the church and public park—the same day. Later in the year, Melton took a guilty plea on the gun misdemeanors and plead no-contest on the felony. The terms of both his bond and his probation for the gun charges did not allow him to be around firearms, supervise children under 17, leave his home past midnight without 48 hours' prior permission from his probation officer, consume drugs or alcohol, or use police equipment in any way. Melton, Michael Recio and Marcus Wright were acquitted on all counts filed in the Ridgeway Street incident on April 26, 2007. The prosecution dropped the inducement of a minor charge during the trial.
Some civil-rights leaders defended Melton, including Charles Evers, older brother of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, and Stephanie Parker-Weaver, daughter of the first openly known interracial couple in Jackson. Parker-Weaver helped lead a campaign to convince Jacksonians of Melton's innocence, including a rally at City Hall with signs stating "Vote Melton Not Guilty." He also drew support from many white conservatives in Jackson who appreciated his crime-fighting methods. Prominent businessman Leland Speed, and families of similar conservatives, provided much of Melton's financial support. Melton told some conservatives that he would take the city past race politics, and explained why he ran as a Democrat. “Most of you are Republican,” he said. “The reality is, if you’re an African American in Jackson, you have to run as a Democrat to win.” He added: “I don’t like either party.” He later on stated he viewed Joseph Stalin, John F. Kennedy, and Mao Zedong as his political influences, which caused him more controversy and cost him support from conservatives.
Other African American leaders, including the president of the state NAACP, Derrick Johnson, and the director of the ACLU of Mississippi, Nsombi Lambright, called for justice for the victims of Melton's unorthodox and illegal crime-fighting strategies. They said he was profiling poor blacks in the city. Those groups are leading an effort to start a civilian review board, in part in response to Melton's methods.
Melton was a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, an organization formed in 2006 and co-chaired by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston mayor Thomas Menino.
On November 16, 2007, Mayor Melton appointed Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin as Jackson's new police chief, after reassigning the police chief Shirlene Anderson to a new post within his administration. Sheriff McMillin decided to keep his post as Hinds County Sheriff in addition to acting as the chief of the Jackson Police Department, becoming the first person in Mississippi's history to serve as both County Sheriff and City Police Chief. After reviewing the applicable state laws and ethics rules, counsel determined the Sheriff could head both agencies legally and be compensated from both. He was confirmed by the Jackson City Council on a 4-2 vote. In securing McMillin as Police Chief, Mayor Melton promised not to interfere in the operations of the police department and to remain focused on other mayoral duties.
Controversies and criminal proceedings
July 19, 2006 - Jackson Mayor Frank Melton received criticism from advocates for the homeless when he used the city’s emergency order to enforce a 10 p.m. curfew for the city’s homeless population. According to Michael Stoops, executive director of the National Coalition for the Homeless in Washington, the curfew is the first of its kind in the nation. He also said that it effectively amounts to a modern Jim Crow law.
July 26, 2006 - Frank Melton raises security concerns with US House of Representative, and senior Homeland Security Committee Democrat, Bennie Thompson (MS) when Melton applied for, and was issued, a United States Capitol Police badge and identification card. The card allowed Melton, armed, to bypass security in Federal Buildings, congressional offices and Congress. Wilson Livingood, sergeant-at-arms for the U. S. House, stated in the report to Thompson dated Aug. 17 that Melton showed a Jackson Police Department credential to Capitol police.
August 26, 2006 - See above for Ridgeway incident.
Nov. 15, 2006 - Melton pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors for carrying a weapon into a church and a park, and no contest to a reduced charge on what had been a felony count involving a gun onto the grounds of the Mississippi College School of Law.
March 1, 2007 - Judge Tomie Green issued a warrant for the arrest of Frank Melton. The warrant was issued on the basis of probation violation because Melton resumed going on midnight club raids, while wearing an unofficial badge, among other possible violations.
March 7, 2007 - Frank Melton left the hospital in the early morning and returned home without alerting the Sheriff's Department. After his ankle bracelet alerted his probation officer that he was back at home, the sheriff called and told Melton to turn himself in to Hinds County authorities, where he was put into the medical ward of the jail.
March 8, 2007 - The Mississippi Supreme Court vacated the arrest warrant for Frank Melton, and asked that Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green be recused without explaining the reasons for either decision.
April 24, 2007 - Frank Melton goes on trial for felony charges stemming September 15, 2006 demolition of a house on Ridgeway Street.
April 26, 2007 - Frank Melton is found not guilty on all counts.
February 2, 2009 - Melton's federal civil rights trial for demolishing the Ridgeway house began.
February 24, 2009 - Melton's federal civil rights trial ended in a mistrial when jurors notified the judge that they could not arrive at a verdict. The case was scheduled to be retried on May 11.
Mayoral re-election bid
Melton filed to run for re-election for the 2009 election. However, on March 17, 2009, the Jackson Democratic Municipal Executive Committee disqualified Melton in a unanimous vote because Melton did not meet the city’s residency requirements. He did not file homestead exemption on his home in Jackson but on his home in Tyler, Texas, where his wife Ellen lives. The unanimous vote took Melton’s name off the ballot for the May 5, 2009 primary.
Melton filed a lawsuit against the Jackson Democratic Municipal Executive Committee to have his name returned to the ballot. On March 26, 2009, Jones County Circuit Court Judge Billy Joe Landrum ordered Melton restored as a Democratic mayoral candidate. Landrum said Melton "overwhelmingly rebutted" the charge by showing documents with his Jackson home address, including his Mississippi driver's license, utility bills and voting records.
On May 5, 2009, Melton lost his bid for re-election, coming in third in the vote totals.
Death
On election night, Melton was rushed to the hospital. He had suffered a cardiac arrest at his Jackson home. He died shortly after midnight on Thursday, May 7, 2009, less than two days after losing the election. His wife, Dr. Ellen Melton, was at his side. He died at St. Dominic Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson, MS.

Lincoln Square, situated on the North Side of the city of Chicago, is among 77 distinct Chicago neighborhood areas. It incorporates the smaller sized neighborhoods:
Ravenswood
Ravenswood Gardens
Bowmanville
Budlong Woods
and  Lincoln Square
In the 1920s, the University of Chicago separated the City into area areas, one of which was Lincoln Square, which included the existing Ravenswood community. Although sometimes being called using those other designations, the Lincoln Square name was made official in 1925.
Approximately 44K people live in the neighborhood with over 1,000 small to medium size companies. You can get there suing the Brown Line of the ‘L’. The community’s borders are defined by Bryn Mawr and Peterson Ave. on the North, Montrose Ave. on the South, Ravenswood Ave. on the East and the Chicago River on the West. The are consist mostly of the single family and small multi-unit structures. A lot of those properties are masonry and require periodical tuckpointing and other service to maintain their sound integrity.
The heart of Lincoln Square is at the junction of Lawrence, Western and Lincoln Ave. You’ll find a wide variety of dining establishments and stores on Lincoln Ave going South from the six-corner junction. Lincoln Square is traditionally referred to as a greatly German influenced and inhabited community, and in the past several years also welcoming the Thai culture.
Lincoln Square is also a place that holds variety of festivals and live music events on seasonal basis. One of the very well-known ones is the Apple Fest, that brings the neighborhood together in celebration of the beginning of fall. Every summer, the Lincoln Square organizes the Square Roots Festival, dedicated to German culture.

Sometimes it feels like tradesmen are not very interested in taking our business. However, Ed made me feel like a valued customer. Because we wanted to do some foundation planting before it got too cold, Ed scheduled us only about 10 days after we signed the deal. They did a terrific job for a better price than the other quotes I got. They even did some extra work at no charge to remove some paint off the brick where a gutter used to hang. A couple of neighbors stopped to complement us on how great the house looked. Then, my customer satisfaction got even better. We had a storm a couple days after the tuckpointing was done. The front gate post is bolted onto the front of the house and that cedar fence post snapped off. Of course they had not tuckpointed behind the fence post, so now that much lighter mortar color was exposed. So they came back at no charge within a week and tuckpointed that spot. I have never written a Yelp review before, but I want to express how pleased I am. This small house got treated like a big deal (which it is to me). read less

My client and her siblings, also with impairments, were so happy with John from Edmar and selected him right off the bat, even though his estimate was higher than the other estimate they received. Edmar wound up giving them a discount, which made the cost come down a bit, which made the client happy. Not only did John and his crew offer to fix the roof, they were able to fix other things in the home, such as putting in drywall and painting the ceiling to seal the crack, installing two new light fixtures and two smoke detectors, installing a new screen door and fixing an old garage door that would not close properly and covering some holes in the wall. We asked John if he could select/purchase the light fixture/smoke detector and factor the cost into the contract, which he was able to accommodate, which made it so much more convenient for the client, who would have needed help to do such. While the work was being done, the client kept asking John for other things that they wanted fixed, which he did even though they were not in the contract. The other things were paid for separately, but this goes to show the company's ability to accommodate people with disabilities who do not understand how these things usually work. As her case manager, I am grateful for his patience, sense of humor and treatment of them as any other individual and for not taking advantage of them, as others might have done in this situation (and have done in the past). In my opinion, he and his crew went above and beyond and the client is very happy with the work and plan to use him again in the future, as I would. read less

He was VERY professional and you could tell he has years of experience under his tool belt, and knew exactly what I wanted. He got back to me within the same day and scheduled an appointment for the next day. *Considering that some companies and contractors didn't have the professinalism or decency to call me back or wouldn't show up to our meeting, we were already off to a great start. Then here comes the best part - compared to the other estimates/bids I got, Edmar's was the most straight forward and cost efficient as opposed to the competition. Not only that, but I felt at ease choosing them given how long they've been in the business. And even at a decent price, they did some 5-star quality work, I was very impressed. The guys who did the work were all professional and they left the work site spotless each day. Very satisfied with their work. I'll certainly be using them again when I need more repairs on my building, and would highly recommend to friends, family, and fellow Yelpers. read less

I hired them to come and redo the siding, soffits, gutters, and downspouts on the addition of my 1927 Mediterranean-inspired brick Tudor in Highland Park. The workers were incredibly polite and cleaned up after themselves every day. They greeted me in the morning and said goodbye at the end of the day (with confirmation of next step/part of work plan). The work as far as we can tell is impeccable. The calking around the vertical seams and lengths of hardi board were very well done and even. I’m in the midst of a backyard renovation. Edmar Corp. made sure to check with the deck guys about some questions they had that might impact their job. The people in the office were really quick to respond to my emails and any questions. I’m also a good communicator, so I don’t usually have issues with this. Who knows if the good communication requires a good client. The work ended up better than I expected. For the past five days I had a crew of 5 working on my 3 story building in Chicago. I have to admit it was neglected and in a very bad shape since no work has been done on it for decades… it’s probably close to 100 years old. It’s a brick structure, with 3 chimneys that had holes in it and every time it rained my basement was flooding. There are 14 windows with steel beams that needed replacement due to heavy rust, this also involved partial rebuilding of walls above those beams. My last problem was the wall section that sticks above flat roof surface, I think they call it “parapet wall” or something, which has disintegrated almost completely and basically required full rebuilding. I just wanted to say “Thank you” for all the work that was done on my house and recommend Ed (the owner of EDMAR) to everyone looking for a good mason. read less

These guys were fast and friendly and clean. I collected many quotes. Edmar Corporation was the lowest $ with the highest rating in work... A+ by the BBB. Fair price. Great work. What more could I ask? Having been given the run around by many contractors over the years, it's such a wonderful thing to have this kind of experience and have that good "homeowner feeling" when a job is done right. They even decided to start taking credit cards, which made it possible to get this job done now. My brick foundation looks great and I have peace of mind. read less

I’ve owned buildings in the city for a while now and I’m telling you there’s no one more professional and detailed than these guys. I’ve had them rebuild firewalls, fix decorative stones, repair damaged bricks and I’ve always been 100% satisfied. Most recently I hired them to powerwash and tuckpoint one of my condos and I couldn’t be happier with the results. It actually looks like a brand new building even though it’s over 80 years old. The owner of the company Ed Marciszewski is a really straight forward guy and won’t waste your time. I trust Edmar with all my repairs and will definitely continue to use them in the future. read less

We had to reconstruct our brick and wrought iron fence after the garbage truck relocated it to the ground. It wasn't a huge project and many of the masonry companies we called wouldn't even come and give an estimate because "it wasn't worth it". We found Edmar on yelp and the experience was awesome from start to finish. When I called to schedule an estimate, Ed came to my house within 48 hours and arrived at exactly the time he said he would arrive. He thoroughly inspected the damage and found other damage that other masons had completely missed. We were provided a written estimate on the spot. When I called Ed to give the go ahead a few days later, he was able to get our job done that week. Once again, he arrived with his crew at exactly the time he had provided. The job was done perfectly within one day. Unfortunately, it is hard to find honest and trustworthy companies in construction. Edmar Corp. breaks every stereotype. Quality work and excellent service!! If you need masonry work, don't even both to call around - Just call Edmar. read less

I reviewed a number of companies and eventually settled on Edmar as they were clearly the most knowledgeable and the most experienced. I've found out the hard way that it's not always best to go with the cheapest proposal...had some contractors rebuild my chimney a while back only to have the mortar crack 5 years later (!!!) Edmar was not the cheapest, but you definitely get what you pay for, and when it comes to home repair, you want the job done right. I called to set up an appointment and Ed stopped by the next day to give me an estimate. I had some cracked bricks above my first story window and turns out the lintels needed to be replaced. Ed outlined how the job would be done and gave me an approximate amount of time it would take to complete (Turns out, he was right on target!) They replaced the lintels and rebuilt part of the wall using the same face brick as the rest of the house so it looked perfect. I cannot praise his workers enough--they were very competent, super respectful, and took the time to answer all of my questions. I will definitely be using Edmar again in the future. We needed some masonry repairs on our single family home in Lincoln Park and I called Edmar to give us a quote. Our chimney was in pretty bad shape—missing bricks and apparently a cracked concrete cap. Ed stopped by to check it out and told us that the chimney had to be rebuilt above the roofline. He counted the number of bricks needed, in addition to a new cap and replacement clay tiles. We got a great price and hired Edmar for the job. The crew that came out was very skilled and hardworking. They even tuckpointed a few areas around the house where the mortar was cracked and loose (without an extra charge). After a couple days, we had a brand new chimney and some fresh tuckpointing. In my opinion, he and his crew went above and beyond and the client is very happy with the work and plan to use him again in the future, as I would. read less

Thus, it was no different with me when I asked Edmar to stop a leak that had ruined a bedroom. To do so, they had to remove the capstones of a parapet in the corner of my 4-floor townhouse. It require their building a scaffold to access the area and elevating all the materials needed for the repairs. When they were done, they had installed a waterproof seal, flashing, wicking -- all that had not been there before. In order to attain inside look of the kitchen we wanted, we needed to brick some windows in and maybe move the door and also repair the chimney. I called a few companies on yelp and in discussing quote and scope of work, Edmar came out ahead, the owner met with my husband, he showed up very prepared with his ladder and binoculos to take a close look at the chimey and he had very great ideas as to which windows he will suggest we brick in and what to do with the door, he gave us a lot to think about in a good way, he also gave us the quote on site, who does that, it was fabulous, since we had previously talked to other companies, we felt good enough to sign the contract and have them start work immediately. He suggested replacing more than just the first few layers of the chimney and pointed out that the old ones will crumble soon underneath the new one. He moved our back door from off the kitchen to off the family room which we like so much better because we have more cabinet space now and he used some of the brick from the new opening to patch the old opening. He also tried his best to match the old brick, he did a pretty good job, so much that you wouldnt really know it from the outside unless it was pointed out. His guys were in and out in a jiffy. point is, although he wasn't the cheapest, he was the most thoughtful and we felt his job was quality without a doubt. He also did some crack repairs on the outside of our property, he removed the bricks and relayed them with morter, patching everything. The only thing was that there are some morter stains on a few bricks in that one area where they repaired the cracks that my husband is not happy about, and he point it out every day now. Eitherway, I will still give them 5 stars. read less

It came to our attention that there were leaks on the ceilings of the top floor apartments, and we called a number of contractors to come check out the situation. Ed fit us in for an emergency quote the next day. This was a rare find as most of the other contractors we called didn’t even bother getting back to us. After taking a look at our roof, Ed explained to us how serious the job was and how the damage came about. The firewall and the parapet wall were both in really bad shape and needed to be rebuilt. The firewall and parapet wall were both crooked and the bricks were loose. To stop the ceilings from leaking, we needed to have the roofing redone as well. Ed was very thorough with explaining how the repairs were going to be done and after comparing a few more bids, we decided that Edmar Corp was best suited to handle our repair needs. They were able to schedule a start date pretty quickly and were flexible about working on Saturday. The workers were very professional and took great caution about ensuring the safety of the surrounding buildings and set up tarps to prevent debris from getting around. They got the firewall and parapet wall up in a few days, and were even able to match the bricks of the parapet wall to the rest of the building. I was pleased with the work that was completed. I had 4 other companies come to give me quotes on tuckpointing my house on all sides and they were the most competitive and in line with what I was looking for. My complaint is more with the communication aspect of things. Everything was good up until I sent the contract in. I had asked when they might be able to start when first sending the contract in and was told probably the next week. I heard nothing for the next week. I sent an email and asked again, being told they would let me know asap. I heard nothing for the next week and a half. I sent another email saying that if I could not find out when they would be able to come out, I would start looking for another contractor. I then heard back that it would likely be in 2-3 weeks. The next morning, people showed up outside my door. Fortunately, that ended up working out fine but there appears to be a lack of communication between people in the front office. I was called twice by people after the project was finished to find out how I wanted to pay my balance as well. So long story short, service good, communication needs some improvement. read less

I rarely write reviews unless I am really impressed. City inspectors came and identified issues with the tuck-pointing and window lintels so I did some calling around to get some estimates. Ed showed up right on time for the appointment which was much appreciated. Also I made a point of not saying anything about what the inspectors had said to see what he would see. Ed pointed our word for word what the inspectors had seen. He took the time to explain to me exactly why one lintel would need to be replace and not another. He also showed me where bricks would need to be replaced, and where not. Finally he showed me where the tuck-pointing would need to be completely done and where it could be touched up. Most importantly, my building is red brick, and need a special mixture strength, Ed was on point. The windows which are the most difficult part on the work were completed in two days, and a third day to finish the tuck-pointing. The guys work like a well-oiled machine, the work fast and the building looks brand new. I cannot express how happy I am with the experience and the completed work. I will be calling them in the future for other jobs and will gladly refer them to my friends, family, and neighbors. read less

I had gotten quite a few recommendations and estimates from different local companies. Ed and Peter with Edmar came out and gave some great improvement suggestions that other companies did not, in addition to providing a reasonable estimate on the spot. I felt comfortable and trusting in Ed and my wife and I decided to use Edmar. Ed was easy to get ahold of and didn't make you feel like he rushing to get you off the phone. Scheduling was clear with Jennifer in the office, who is very nice and professional, and the on-site foreman quickly took care of the neighbor's concerns about their fence without hesitation. The crew performed quality brick work and I look forward to using Ed and Edmar again in the near future to handle our other parapet issues, as budget allows. It is very nice to have an owner give a written warranty with their estimate and stand behind their work, be so easy to get ahold of and so knowledgeable as well. You don't come across this often enough it seems. We look forward to using Edmar again! read less

Sonria to open doors to gracious southern living
Independent real estate companies GeoEstate Development Corp. and Stonebridge Corp. are on track and on time in delivering Sonria’s promise of gracious condominium living in the suburban south of Metro Manila.
Sonria is the first high-end residential condominium to rise within the highly regarded Ayala Alabang and Madrigal Business Park area. Set for unit turnover by December 2015, the low density, 21-story, 88-unit vertical community is the ideal home for traditional Alabang residents, empty nesters and young couples who want to live near their original homes.
A topping-off ceremony that signaled the structural completion of Sonria was held last February at the project site in Madrigal Business Park in Muntinlupa City.  “We are looking forward to delivering Sonria by end this year,” says Ruel Bautista, GeoEstate’s Senior Vice-President for Construction Management. “We see this as our way of revolutionizing condo living in the south by focusing on getting the essentials of the casual Alabang atmosphere, then translating this in our design and execution of Sonria. With the topping off complete, we are now incorporating the design elements that reflect the gracious and upscale character of Alabang for the southerners at heart.”
The exclusive, relaxed and comfortable subdivision living that is the trademark of Alabang is the pioneering spirit behind the vision that formed Sonria. Aside from providing residents with a home that adapts the best of southern living, a Sonria unit also has the potential to give good investment returns when leased.
“Right now, there are a lot of expats who are staying in hotels in Alabang,” says GeoEstate Chairman and CEO Francisco H. Licuanan III, a real estate development veteran who was one of the planners of Ayala Alabang and former president and CEO of Ayala Land Inc. “Expats choose Alabang because it has all the amenities and facilities to live in,” he explains.
Sonria is beside Molito, a quick walk from Alabang Town Center, while Alabang Country Club is a short drive away. The condo is close to main roads such as Daang Hari and South Luzon Expressway via Alabang-Zapote Road that make travel to other parts of Metro Manila convenient. It is also close to schools, places of worship and hospitals.
Taking the best of southern living
Sonria’s elegant vertical community takes the best of southern living and enhances it with the benefits of condominium living. GeoEstate Development Corp. and Stonebridge Corp. took by heart exclusivity, spaciousness, comfort and privacy in developing Sonria for the traditional Alabang resident.
Sonria offers one- to three-bedroom units with sizes ranging from 55 square meters for the one-bedroom, 82 to 101 square meters for the two-bedroom, and 119 to 124 square meters for the three-bedroom configurations. There are a select number of penthouse units with even bigger living spaces, and spacious decks.
In keeping with the living experience similar to a single-detached home in a gated village, most units feature a separate maids’ quarters/utility area, closets in the master bedroom and generous kitchen space.  Interior finishes of natural stone and high-quality cabinetry further enhance the elegance of the interiors.
A superior characteristic of Sonria is its attention to detail in terms of architecture and design. Most units in the building face east to provide residents with the advantage of morning sun as well as the best views of the surroundings, such as the vibrant Alabang Town Center and even Laguna De Bay. Some larger units, with their southeast orientation, also offer a view of the nearby Ayala Alabang Village.
In terms of amenities, Sonria has a little something for the entire family, says Carlo Peterson, Project Head for Sonria. There is a gym and swimming pool for the adults, and a kiddie pool and play zone for the kids. The veranda area and main lobby are wide and spacious to accommodate visitors and guests.
Living in the village can sometimes be inconvenient at times of power or water supply shortages. At Sonria, residents enjoy the utmost convenience of uninterrupted water or power supply due to the condominium’s back-up facilities that will provide full (100%) backup power to both the residential units and common areas if necessary.
Moreover, Sonria’s first-class property management services with its low density development assure its exclusivity and security for its residents.
“The intimacy of our low unit count, our prime location, the design and finishes of our units and our quick project completion schedule combine to make Sonria a unique and compelling proposition to both end-users and investors,” says Peterson.
For more details on Sonria, visit www.sonria.com.ph, or call 475-3702 and (0918) 990-6317. Model units are available for viewing onsite at the Sonria Pavilion located on Industry corner Finance Streets, Madrigal Business Park, Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa City.
