Emergency Repairs to Scenic Highway in Michigan's Upper Peninsula
US-2 in Delta County Closed Due to Water Damage
DELTA COUNTY, MI – Emergency repairs to a scenic highway along Lake Michigan in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will take two to three weeks, officials said. A section of US-2 in Delta County was recently damaged by high water, forcing officials with the Michigan Department of Transportation to close the road to all traffic.
The closure is at Portage Creek, west of Escanaba. A detour is posted. Recent rains resulted in the creek overflowing, causing water damage to the east approach of the bridge, and undermining pavement, WLUC reports.

Detour in Place as Repairs Begin
Officials from the Michigan Department of Transportation have announced that a detour has been put in place as emergency repairs begin on US-2 in Delta County. The closure at Portage Creek, west of Escanaba, is expected to last for two to three weeks.
The recent heavy rains caused the creek to overflow, resulting in significant water damage to the east approach of the bridge and the pavement. The road has been deemed unsafe for travel, necessitating the closure.
Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour, which will guide them around the closed section of US-2. The detour has been carefully planned to minimize inconvenience and ensure the smooth flow of traffic during the repair process.
Impact on Local Residents and Businesses
The closure of US-2 in Delta County has had a significant impact on local residents and businesses. The scenic highway is a popular route for tourists, and its closure has disrupted travel plans for many.
Local businesses that rely on tourism have also been affected, as the closure has resulted in a decrease in visitor traffic. Restaurants, hotels, and shops along US-2 are feeling the economic impact of the road closure.
However, residents and business owners understand the necessity of the repairs. Safety is the top priority, and ensuring that the road is in good condition for travel is crucial for the well-being of everyone in the community.
Emergency Repairs and Road Safety
The emergency repairs on US-2 in Delta County are essential to address the water damage caused by recent heavy rains. The overflowing of Portage Creek has undermined the pavement and compromised the structural integrity of the bridge's east approach.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is working diligently to restore the road to a safe condition as quickly as possible. This includes repairing the damaged pavement, reinforcing the bridge's foundation, and ensuring proper drainage to prevent future water damage.
While the repairs may cause inconvenience in the short term, the long-term benefits are significant. By addressing the water damage promptly, the Michigan Department of Transportation is ensuring the safety of motorists and preserving the scenic beauty of the area for future generations to enjoy.
Collaboration and Communication for Efficient Repairs
The emergency repairs on US-2 in Delta County require close collaboration and communication between various stakeholders. The Michigan Department of Transportation is working closely with local authorities, construction crews, and other relevant agencies to expedite the repair process.
Regular updates are being provided to the public through official channels, including social media and local news outlets. This ensures that residents, businesses, and tourists are well-informed about the progress of the repairs and any changes to the detour route.
The efficient coordination between all parties involved is crucial to minimize disruption and complete the repairs within the estimated timeline. The safety and convenience of the public remain the top priority throughout this process.
The emergency repairs on US-2 in Delta County, Michigan, due to water damage caused by recent heavy rains, have resulted in the closure of a scenic highway along Lake Michigan. URGENT URGENT U.P. Breaking News Bulletin – 4-17-18 –3:57 p.m. ET 2:57 p.m. CT –
Knife throwing, tire slashing probe in Escanaba leads to domestic violence charge against a Gladstone, MI woman; meanwhile man wanted for aggravated assault/domestic violence in Wisconsin hides out in western U.P. – and was questioned but not booked in Gogebic County today since Oshkosh officials do not want him that badly – another case of good riddance, someone else’s problem.
Kassidy Jade Seidl
By Greg Peterson U.P. Breaking News Owner, News Director 906-273-2433
(Escanaba, MI) – A Delta County woman has been released on bond after her arrest for domestic violence today for allegedly slashing vehicle tires and throwing a knife, while in Gogebic County officers had to kick loose a Superior, WI man despite an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault and domestic violence by Oshkosh, WI officials who do not seem to want him very badly.
Kassidy Jade Seidl
Police in Escanaba, MI were dispatched to an incident with a knife reported at a mobile home park located at 1401 N. 23rd Street, Lot 63 about just before 1 p.m. ET this afternoon, April 17, 2018.
18-year-old Kassidy Jade Seidle of Gladstone was charged with domestic violence/assault.
“The caller states that a Kassidy Seidle just slashed the tires on his friend’s car, the dispatcher told responding officers. “Apparently she slashed his tires with a knife and she (allegedly) threw it at him.”
The knife is “somewhere still on the property, but she doesn’t have it in hand,” the Delta County 911 Dispatcher told police headed to the mobile home. Its is not clear what instigated the alleged tire slashing.
Meanwhile in the western U.P., if they don’t want you bad – then you are safe even if warrants have been issued accusing you of a violent crime.
43-year-old Troy Michael Aspinwall of Superior, WI was questioned late this morning by police in Gogebic County and released – because his aggravated assault and domestic violence warrant was a “non-extraditable warrant” issued by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections in Oshkosh, WI.
Another classic case of hiding out on two sides of the border including the western U.P. – while just out of reach of Oshkosh officials – who seem not to really want him back despite listinng him online in a wanted document with his photo.
Its unclear how officers in Gogebic County came upon the man.
The man has former residences listed in Wakefield, Ramsay, and Bessemer in Michigan; plus Castle Rock, CO.
The Gogebic County 911 dispatcher told off Unit Adam 26 that that the crime computer showed a warning for “violent tenancies” due to the aggravated assault and domestic violence charges. His driver’s license was revoked in Wisconsin.
The man has four prior convictions for operating a motor vehicle while impaired (OWI).
Alleged tire slashing, knife throwing incident in Escanaba results in arrest Tuesday of female teen; and Oshkosh, WI officials won’t extradite a man wanted for aggravated assault/domestic violence – as he hides out on both sides of border and was questioned today in Gogebic County URGENT URGENT U.P. URGENT URGENT U.P. Breaking News Bulletin: – 4-9-18 – 3:02 p.m. ET
Upper Peninsula business man arrested twice in a month for allegedly violating a PPO involving the alleged stalking of his estranged wife
By Greg Peterson U.P. Breaking News Owner, News Director 906-273-2433
(Escanaba, MI) – An Upper Peninsula businessman has been arrested again for allegedly violating a personal protection order (PPO) involving the alleged stalking of his estranged wife who is seeking a divorce.
61-year-old Steven Alan Swanson of 6569 M Road in Escanaba, MI spent about five hours in the Delta County Detention Center on Saturday morning, April 7, 2018.
It was the second time he has been arrested on the charge in about a month, and each time he has been quickly freed on bond.
Swanson is the co-owner of Hilltop RV.
In fact, frustrated sources contacted U.P. Breaking News – saying his arrests never get reported.
The sources claim that Swanson’s alleged power has stopped him from being arrested in past alleged stalking cases involving women and a child.
Swanson was booked into the DCDC at 6:24 a.m. ET on Saturday morning, and was released on bond at 11:22 a.m.
A check by U.P. Breaking News shows that many of the Upper Peninsula newspapers, television and radio stations have lucrative contracts with Hilltop RV Super Center – with superstores located in Ishpeming and Escanaba.
Those same media outlets have not reported on Swanson’s arrests. Officials in Delta County remain tight-lipped.
Meanwhile, Swanson was also booked into the DCDC at 8:22 p.m. ET on Friday night, March 9, 2018.
Swanson was charged with violation of a personal protection order (PPO).
Swanson was released from the DCDC on his own recognizance.
Our sources said it is unusual for people arrested for violating a PPO twice in a month – would be eligible for a quick bond.
“Less than one month after the last time he violated the Court Order (PPO) to STOP STALKING – Somebody please explain why he was released from jail on bond,” a source told U.P. Breaking News.
Sources say the latest alleged victim is Swanson’s estranged wife.
“She has been trying to divorce him and he’s making her life a living hell,” a source told U.P. Breaking News.
Swanson has a long history at the business founded by his parents. In fact, Swanson and his family’s business history is proudly displayed on the Hilltop RV website:
“Steve Swanson’s journey to an RV Superstore did not happen overnight,” the company website states. “He began as a part-time employee in 1972 while still attending High School. That’s when his parents, Ken and Theresa Swanson, launched their business as manufacturers of truck campers.”
“The Swanson family business focused away from camper manufacturing to RV sales in the mid 70’s. Within a decade, Hilltop RV became one of Michigan’s largest RV dealers.”
“We decided to get out of every endeavor that wasn’t directly related to the RV industry,” recalls Steve Swanson. “We decided to do what we do best, RV sales and service. That decision not only simplified our entire operation, but it allowed us to focus on what we really enjoyed most.”
