Emergency Repairs to Scenic Highway in Michigan's Upper Peninsula
Tumblr media
US-2 in Delta County Closed Due to Water Damage
DELTA COUNTY, MI – Emergency repairs to a scenic highway along Lake Michigan in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will take two to three weeks, officials said. A section of US-2 in Delta County was recently damaged by high water, forcing officials with the Michigan Department of Transportation to close the road to all traffic.
The closure is at Portage Creek, west of Escanaba. A detour is posted. Recent rains resulted in the creek overflowing, causing water damage to the east approach of the bridge, and undermining pavement, WLUC reports.

Detour in Place as Repairs Begin
Officials from the Michigan Department of Transportation have announced that a detour has been put in place as emergency repairs begin on US-2 in Delta County. The closure at Portage Creek, west of Escanaba, is expected to last for two to three weeks.
The recent heavy rains caused the creek to overflow, resulting in significant water damage to the east approach of the bridge and the pavement. The road has been deemed unsafe for travel, necessitating the closure.
Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour, which will guide them around the closed section of US-2. The detour has been carefully planned to minimize inconvenience and ensure the smooth flow of traffic during the repair process.
Impact on Local Residents and Businesses
The closure of US-2 in Delta County has had a significant impact on local residents and businesses. The scenic highway is a popular route for tourists, and its closure has disrupted travel plans for many.
Local businesses that rely on tourism have also been affected, as the closure has resulted in a decrease in visitor traffic. Restaurants, hotels, and shops along US-2 are feeling the economic impact of the road closure.
However, residents and business owners understand the necessity of the repairs. Safety is the top priority, and ensuring that the road is in good condition for travel is crucial for the well-being of everyone in the community.
Emergency Repairs and Road Safety
The emergency repairs on US-2 in Delta County are essential to address the water damage caused by recent heavy rains. The overflowing of Portage Creek has undermined the pavement and compromised the structural integrity of the bridge's east approach.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is working diligently to restore the road to a safe condition as quickly as possible. This includes repairing the damaged pavement, reinforcing the bridge's foundation, and ensuring proper drainage to prevent future water damage.
While the repairs may cause inconvenience in the short term, the long-term benefits are significant. By addressing the water damage promptly, the Michigan Department of Transportation is ensuring the safety of motorists and preserving the scenic beauty of the area for future generations to enjoy.
Collaboration and Communication for Efficient Repairs
The emergency repairs on US-2 in Delta County require close collaboration and communication between various stakeholders. The Michigan Department of Transportation is working closely with local authorities, construction crews, and other relevant agencies to expedite the repair process.
Regular updates are being provided to the public through official channels, including social media and local news outlets. This ensures that residents, businesses, and tourists are well-informed about the progress of the repairs and any changes to the detour route.
The efficient coordination between all parties involved is crucial to minimize disruption and complete the repairs within the estimated timeline. The safety and convenience of the public remain the top priority throughout this process.

**Editor’s Note: Delta and Marquette County Jails are the only ones doing it right by allowing access to public records – but the other counties protect those charged and decide which ones get identified and who doesn’t get named. Not releasing public records and charging a large amount for records is another example of how the U.P. remains behind the rest of the country
(Escanaba, MI) – At least five people spent Thanksgiving in the U.P. Jails after being arrested in unrelated drug cases – while an Escanaba man is accused of domestic violence for at least the third time.
19-year-old Evan Jay Krueger of Escanaba, MI remains jailed this morning, Fri., Nov. 24, 2017. Krueger was arrested on Wednesday on charges of deliver and manufacture of marijuana and resisting/obstructing a police officer in Delta County.
His Facebook page indicates Krueger is a model.
41-year-old David Delisle was released on bond only seven minutes in Thanksgiving after being arrested the night before on a a drug charge.
Delisle was charged with possession of a controlled substance/analogues and released four hours later on a $2,500 bond.
The exact nature of the analogues has not been released. On his Facebook page Delisle, an Ironworker, states he lives in Milwaukee and formerly lived in Munising.
Two Delta County residents remain jailed today after their booking on Tuesday on drug court violations: They are 44-year-old Julie Hamilton and 32-year-old Jamee Hess. There were also several arrests for possession of marijuana.
34-year-old Charles Reed was arrested about 2 a.m. Thanksgiving day and remains in the Marquette County Jail under a $10,000 bond for possession of schedule I, II, and III narcotics. U.P. Breaking News is still attempting to confirm Reed’s hometown.
Meanwhile a serious domestic violence arrest:
Ken Dacko
48-year-old Kenneth J. Dacko of Escanaba, MI was charged Wednesday afternoon with domestic violence – third offense. His bond has been set at $2,500. Dacko remained at the delta County jail as of 10 a.m. today.
