Umbrella academy - subway map code translated

Some of you might have seen I started to make a stab at solving the symbol code seen in TUA S4.

@ifellinto-fantasy happened upon a real life copy of the map so very kindly sent me some lovely photos to help translate the smaller bits of text I was struggling to see.

There are some missing letters and presumed typos in the code, so where I've corrected these I've added brackets around the correction, in caps if a corrected letter (M) lower case if an added letter (m)

So there's several areas of code and text to look at

Starting with the title on the far left - SYSTEM MAP

The block of text next to it is a little longer, but still translates:

ATTENTION

These are the line codes. Some of the lines are also letter symbols, but most are new symbols

ok im sorry i will NEVER stop talking about the job application on Dean's desk. and he always wanted to be a fireman (what he told Sam). to save people who died in fires like his mom. maybe the paper was actually a contract and he didn't even get to start his first day. IM SO SAD AND ANGRY

Look I know the AU technically is a lot more dressed down greasy Aragorn style and I respect that BUT

ranting for a bit because the entire scene where elphaba tells glinda her secret makes me go rabid and actually makes me want to chew concrete because not only is it actually absolutely heartbreaking to see just how deeply elphaba believes all the horrible things her father reinforces; how she thinks she's responsible for her mother's death and is the reason for nessarose's disability even when it's literally not her fault in any way and is actually DIRECTLY her father's fault.

and just the fact that elphaba tells glinda all this and tells glinda her father hates her and that everything's her fault and glinda looks at her and she's absolutely heartbroken to hear elphaba saying all these things and she becomes the first person in elphaba's life to look her in the eyes and tell her that none of that is true and that it is NOT her fault, it was NEVER her fault despite whatever anyone said.

ik a lot of ppl see glinda's "it was the milkflower's fault" line as a very sort of shallow take by glinda (I'm explaining it poorly but ik some ppl wonder why she didn't just call out governor thropp directly) but I've got to disagree with that take because personally I think glinda heard elphaba talking, heard her describe her secret and heard how her father forced her mother to chew milkflowers constantly during her pregnancy all because he was afraid the baby would come out green like elphaba and she heard all this and she hears how elphaba thinks this is all her fault.

and yk they're roommates. glinda sees the way elphaba talks about her father and how even though she says that he hates her in an almost casual manner despite how she says he's justified for hating her, elphaba still loves her father and she still wants to do right by him and she still wants him to love her.

so glinda knows that elphaba will not listen to her if she straight up tells her that her father's fucking mental and completely wrong and that it was all his fault and that she's probably going to bludgeon him to death. she knows that elphaba will never accept this and she knows that right now it won't do any good for anyone.

so instead she tells elphaba it was the milkflower's fault. and she looks her in the eyes and she tells her this was never your fault you shouldn't think this was ever your fault and anyone who ever told you that it was your fault was completely and totally wrong and I need you to know this.

because the primary concern isn't about telling elphaba she's got a shitty dad the primary concern is telling elphaba that it is not her fault for simply existing. and to let her know that there is nothing wrong with her and that there is someone here, right now, who loves and cares for her so so much and wants her to know that. that there is someone who will hold her hand and who will tell her that they are there for her and that she is fine the way she is. that she is loved.

The more I think about it, the more I question Arcane S2's politics and themes, which were so foundational to S1. Like, a tiny example [SPOILERS AHEAD]:

Singed wins. He gets exactly what he wants in the end. All his "efforts" are rewarded. What does that say about people who share his ideology of eugenics? He is the source of nearly every horrible thing and conflict that happened (Shimmer, the factory deaths, Jinx, Vander as Warwick, the corruption of Viktor), and he gets a happier ending than any other character. Not even a 'he got what he wanted but he has become completely unrecognizable/monstrous to his daughter' tag at the end. You can say they're setting him up and need to open his daughter to future shows, but the way you end a character's story says something about what you think about that character. What does it say when the eugenicist war criminal gets the happy ending he doesn't deserve?

appreciation post for the tiny characterization details in glinda and elphaba's letters:

- glinda having her own personalized printed stationary, elphaba just using a loose sheet

- elphaba writing in a practical print that's a little messy because she's just focused on getting down the message, glinda writing in clean cursive because she's all about the aesthetic (sets up "form over content" well)

- elphaba properly indenting the letter, glinda having pretty inconsistent paragraph spacing

- even when it comes to the pens, glinda's is fancier while elphaba's looks more generic. everything glinda has is personalized to herself and her aesthetic, while elphaba is likely used to not having anything catered to her personally

Again big thanks to @ifellinto-fantasy because without their images this decoding was almost impossible. Some of these images are a little grainy, but that's due to the small size of them even on the original prop!

green NEOTA?ELOOPLI there is a new symbol in this, but it looks like it is the LINE ONE TAME LOOP message just transposed a line down. So start reading from the // NEONTA?ELOOP//LI

So definitely some duplication and errors in there, but a consistent pattern of things which still link back to the storyline and canon. An incredible amount of detail to put into a prop which had so little screen time, and along with all the marketing maybe hints that the subway should have played a much bigger role in the planned 10 episode season arc.
