One of the great strengths of the Thriller Bark arc is that the audience gets a good idea of what the big bad's powers are before the fights start. This whole bit with Perona's powers is mostly very funny, but it quickly establishes that physical strength is not the answer when going against these negative hollows. Along with our scenes with an invisible Absalom and the future preview of Ryuma's quick draw, it's just a lot of really nice set up for the second half of the arc.

Oda knew he was going to make Zoro one of the MVPs of the arc, so he had to make him look like a loser at least once to balance it out

A great many of the zombie designs are deliberately absurd, but Ryuma's fucking slaps

This panel has always genuinely unnerved me, but more importantly, I am fascinated by how these painting zombies work. Unlike Big Mom, Moriah doesn't seem to be able to apply a shadow to something that was never alive, and it seems like these zombies are literally stitched to the canvas

Like, is that skin? What are the mechanics here? How do you get these guys to lay perfectly flat when in incognito mode? The people demand to know.

I like that Oda hides Usopp's face with his speech bubble in the first panel. It adds to that feeling of genuine distress when we're so used to seeing his freaked out expressions

I like that one of the Cerberus heads yips instead of barks, because it's a fox not a dog

Every time I see Hogback's Cindry room, it reminds me of Helga from Hey Arnold, except more pathetic and sad
