Face # 5: Trauma @ the trainstop...

This year (2024) I’ve been trying to draw faces, all year long. By the end of this year, I hope to capture some truly expressive faces with my drawings. So far, this multi-drawing series is teaching me to pound in bold and thick black outlines and make a conscious effort to draw straighter lines that don’t blow out or must be erased. I think my overall quality with this face experiment is gradually becoming less cartoony and more semi-realistic as I practice. The human face is hard to draw folks! The proportions! Oh, the proportions! I haven't attempted a profile yet, so here's one.

This last week, I was waiting for the light rail at a stop in Charlotte. I find a lot of expressive faces at train stops recently, and at first this was a happy face. A pretty, smiling woman approached me and then sat on my left side, a pane of multihued plexiglass separating us which sort of distorted the shadow of her head into a rainbow. I was trying not to look at her, but it’s summer and I’m single, gimme a break. I peered over quickly and noticed that her smile had been replaced with a million-mile, far-away glance. She was holding her phone in her left hand like a rock, and I assume she had just received a bad news text. It was particularly jarring when I saw a single tear roll down her right cheek. It was like she went through some kind of instant sea change within herself but was also trying to hold it together in public. Whatever happened, I hope she is okay, because my train was about to board, and then I was whisked away from this stranger forever. She looked suddenly traumatized and her whole face and body became suddenly still, like a statue, as she processed a new and jarring piece of information. The image was burned on my brain, so when I got home, I tried to draw her. More to come!

Profiles in Villainy

The Kaonashi

Sometimes known as ‘No Face,’ The Kaonashi is a denizen of the spirit realm possessing tremendous and destructive powers.  It devours other spirits and can absorb their emotions into his own soul, causing him to take on their attitudes, especially negative ones. 

When The Kaonashi happened upon the lost human girl, Chihiro, he followed her around, attracted by her feelings of loss.  Chihiro had been made a servant at the spirit bathhouse and when she inadvertently offended Kaonashi, the dark spirit went on a destructive rampage.

He ended up trashing much of the bathhouse, consuming everything and thus transforming into a massive inky blob.  He only stopped after Chihiro offered him a dumpling which caused The Kaonashi to regurgitate everything he had eaten. With all of the gluttonous, greedy, and wrathful influences out of his system, he returned to a docile, calm state, showing remorse for his actions. He followed Chihiro to the good witch Zeniba's house.

When Chihiro prepares to leave, Zeniba requests that The Kaonashi stay with her as a helper and stay away from the negative influences of the Bathhouse that could set him off again. The spirit agrees, and stays with her as a humble and kind servant.

Though he never truly speaks, his moans and coos were performed by Akio Nakamura in the Japanese version, and Bob Bergen in the English dub version.  No Face The Kaonashi appears in the 2001 animated feature, Spirited Away.

A detail I always enjoyed in Nolan's The Dark Knight was in that scene where Harvey takes a shot at the bar, you can see the drink actually trickle through his exposed scars. So that kind of inspired the smoke thing going on, lol.
