and then after becoming obsessed with xmen and i watched it again i went (when he was revealed)

Chuck is needlessly shitty to Franklin Richards

In Dan Slott's Fantastic Four run, 'twas decided that long time mutant, Franklin Richards, was not a mutant, actually.

Charles Xavier contacts him telepathically to drop this bombshell, has a suspiciously well-informed explanation, then bans him from Krakoa where all his friends are. He nopes out and that's that. Look how miserable he is, I hate it. I'm not sure why universally powerful people keep walking around in mutant-face, but I do know the X-Office had no part in this decision.

Like The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver before him, Franklin is editorially unrelated to the X-Men. The Maximoffs were moved from the X-Office to the Avengers, but Franklin has always been part of the Fantastic Four. Kinda makes it difficult to include him in mutant stories, and for the most part he hasn't been. A future version of him married Rachel (which shows how slowly he's aged) and he was heavily involved with Onslaught, but everyone was.

What little we saw of him on Krakoa during FF v X-Men looked really cool to me, and I would have enjoyed more of a prominent mutant who has such deep ties to the human world while also experiencing puberty. Franklin had been isolated not just from mutant stories but mutant culture as well. He would have been a bridge between Krakoa and one of Earth's premier super teams.

From a Watsonian perspective, I headcanon that Charles did this at Reed's request. While he doesn't need a reason to act like a heartless bastard to a child, he's still a politician here - one who alienated Reed Richards (though he wasn't sympathetic in the first place) and should be trying to mend fences. Given Reed and Sue's NIMBY attitude about Franklin's mutant status, I could absolutely see them wanting to cut him off from that part of his life. Chuck would see it as a small price to pay for goodwill. Maybe Reed whispered 'thanks, Illuminati bro. Let's never fight again' to Charles at the first Hellfire Gala.

Or not, the FF had zero involvement in Krakoan affairs until after it fell, and even then they didn't give a shit. My favourite shiny girl Rasputin IV showed up one day and started beating them down, but that eventually got smoothed over. Still, they all grumbled about the X-Men (who'd just been genocided again) after they left. Boy, the Fantastic Four kinda suck, don't they? Maybe Chuck does too, and this is just as it seems.

Oh wait, Reed did show up once in Uncanny X-Men #700 - he helped build the super jail to keep Chuck's brain locked down. Joke's on him though; Chuck hacked his brain years ago so he'd leave a back door. Turns out all they needed was a crusty guy named 'Scurvy' to achieve that. I wonder why he's called that? Get this man some vitamin C!

its kind of become a running joke among charles obsessives (theres dozens of us! dozens!) that he's actually just adding degrees to a list whenever he needs to seem qualified 😭 bc he's always assigned this long list of degrees, but its so hard to find individual confirmations of them in the text! and even when you think you've found one, there's a detail that contradicts a different supposed confirmation. but he IS clearly, to reference your stellar phrasing, superfluously educated

Hi, not a problem - always happy to chat about Xavier and X-stuff.

I got the info about his educational background from the Marvel wikia (which is a very handy resource for anyone who's into X-stuff, btw), so I would look to the footnotes there.

It's possible that Xavier's engaged in credential fraud; that happens quite a bit in elite higher education. As I said in the post, however, I think it's more likely that:

"Charles has difficulty with social interactions, because he didn’t have much in common with his chronological peer group and spent a lot of his life in a bubble of other academics."

As a coping mechanism for his social awkwardness, he became a perpetual student and then a perpetual academic, so that he could stay in his bubble and avoid having to grow as a person by interacting with people with different backgrounds and life experiences.

And this tendency is quite common in the Marvel Universe: T'challa has 5 PhDs, Hank McCoy has 6 PhDs, Reed Richards has 18!

Now from a Doylist perspective, this is just due to the fact that comic book writers don't understand or care about the economics of academia and are just looking for a simple way to communicate "this character is a genius."

But from a Watsonian perspective and an insider perspective, it suggests a lack of self-confidence and sense of direction, such that rather than going out on the job market, getting a job and having to show their intellectual community that they can drive a coherent research agenda, these people just want to stay in the psychological womb of studenthood where they can keep trying to "find themselves" with disconnected dissertations in different fields.

The Illuminati fails... again

Firstly, I'm amazed that these bozos were still meeting in 2023. Appointing themselves the secret rulers of the world caused so many disasters and solved nothing (wait, they encouraged Marvel Boy to reform but he probably would have done that anyway) plus they were publicly exposed. Exposed and thrashed by the Hulk for launching him into space, shamed for their hubris by the entire world. So many people suffered for their arrogance. They destroyed countless worlds, though they may not remember that.

Kinda weird nobody said anything about Chuck's helmet and The Maker.

Not only that, but Krakoa Chuck is there. No doubting he's a very influential man, but he did not have a good relationship with Reed at this time. Then again, Namor is there so it's likely personal grievances are put aside. Chuck did clear Krakoa with them in 2016, I wonder what else he ran past them. Terraforming Mars? ORCHIS? I'd imagine so, though he is a blunderer of the highest order. This gathering doesn't even crack top 5 of 'mistakes he keeps making.' It's nice to see Black Bolt though, I wonder how he's doing.

Anyway, they're meeting because The Maker (an alternate super duper villain Reed Richards) has escaped from Damage Control. He also stole technology from each of them, something he shouldn't have been able to do.

They manage to figure out they're behind the eight ball on this, so surely they'd call in their powerful allies, right? Right?

Nope, they walk into his trap and fail to interfere with his actions to even the slightest degree. Look at Chuckles floating there uselessly. Imagine if they bought an Omega or two for this. Magneto, Proteus, Legion, mayyybe Exodus. Or Madison Jeffries even. Tempus. A mutant circuit, anyone other than the seven of them. Sinister could probably help but that would lead to a bigger mess. Never stopped them before! Heck, Franklin Richards alone would have a good chance. Sunspot is 3-0 vs The Maker, hehe. The Illuminati suck.

At least it's a universe where Sunfire and the Rasputins (minus Mikhail bc fuck that guy) rule the world. That's pretty cool, as far as super evil oligarchies go. Hey, Omega Red is there too! The Illuminati are fortunate that their own universe isn't affected, but it might be yet. The Maker loves fucking with people.
