I would just really like to read a fic where WWX regrets how he treated LWJ before dying (specifically with LWJ constantly warning him that demonic cultivation was dangerous and WWX brushing him off and turning down his offers for help etc). While I do want WWX to apologize and be held accountable, I absolutely want happy Wangxian to be together and a fluffy ending for them! (also please nothing with JC bashing, if anything I'd prefer a fic where they have a strong brotherly relationship and WWX apologizes to him as well but my main concern is Wangxian). NOTES: Starting this list off with a bang- soulmate AU, reincarnated WY, and an immortal Lan Zhan who is really just out here living to find his man. I love this one so much because it has such good descriptions of WY's past experiences with Lan Zhan. I love the art imagery and WY being an artist. This was just a fantastic fic with a solid ending.

Lan Wangji looks down at the boy, who looks back up at him, and he’s still far too adorable for his own good. “Your father is perhaps too trusting,” Lan Wangji remarks. A-Yuan seems to consider this for a long moment before he nods resolutely in a way that tells Lan Wangji he has no idea what he means. “May I carry you?” A-Yuan is quick to let go of his leg to reach up instead, so Lan Wangji reaches down to pick him up under his arms and hoist him onto his hip where he settles heavily like a sentient sack of potatoes.

NOTES: This fic is tooth rot sweet. The speed in which Lan Zhan goes from "kids- indifference" to "I WILL adopt this child and his father" is staggering. It's very short, very cute, and mostly not WangXian but end game wangxian and an excellent cleanser of a fic.

It reeks of magic, wonder, horror, and everything in between, hidden in the shadows unless one dares to look. If one chooses not to see, they will never find a single hint that something different is amiss. As someone enamored with smartphones and laptops, Wei Wuxian never thought he would stumble upon the mystical. Until one day, his landlord couldn't see him. Or: Wei Wuxian dives headfirst into a shadowy world of magic, where he falls for a mythical figure and discovers a forgotten past.

NOTES: I honestly didn't expect to like this fic as much as I did- I was warry of the tag "Female Wei Ying" as it's not my speed usually BUT it ended up being a solid fic. I do love Foxxian fics and that paired with an eclectic hotel of magical beings ended up becoming sneakily endearing. This fic also has a solid "thawing ice prince/cunning fox" dynamic that is perfection.

PSA on single-character Chinese names

The usage of single-character names BY THEMSELVES is considered a little odd in modern Mandarin. Multi-character names are fine, for example, Wangji is fine by itself, but if you’re referring to him by birth name, you wouldn’t usually refer to him as JUST Zhan. You will have to use his full name (Lan Zhan), or add a prefix or suffix to the name, like A-Zhan, or Zhan’er. Unfortunately, the Netflix subs of CQL tends to omit the prefixes / suffixes from the names, thus translating A-Ying, for example, as simply Ying. This is an inaccurate translation.

There ARE occasions when single-character names may be used by themselves. For example, when JFM is referring to WWX early in CQL while talking to LQR, he calls him “Ying” and in LWJ’s letter to WWX, inviting him to JL’s hundred day celebration, he also refers to him as just “Ying” near the end of the letter (see below). However, this is somewhat formal dated usage, and is no longer common in modern Mandarin. I believe this is part of a larger evolution of Chinese language away from a more single-character focused lexicon, which I will explain below.

THE EVOLUTION OF CLASSICAL TO MODERN CHINESE

The modern spoken form of Mandarin evolved from an olden form of written Chinese, which I’m going to refer to as classical Chinese for simplicity’s sake (I believe historians actually have different names for different eras of ancient written Chinese). At the same time though, modern Mandarin is VERY different from classical Chinese. Classical Chinese is pretty much like... an entirely different language from modern Mandarin. I’m going to quote this meta which I encourage you guys to read in full for an analysis on LWJ’s speaking style:

文言文 wenyanwen / classical/literary Chinese is related to but distinct from modern Mandarin… Modern Mandarin Chinese as we know and learn it today in classrooms is something that didn’t really get codified until the 20th century… classical Chinese can be summed up, like most things in Chinese, with a four-character idiom: 言简意赅 yanjianyigai. Broken down, we get:

言 yan - words, speech

简 jian - simple, brief

意 yi - meaning, intent

赅 gai - complete, full, comprehensive

Classical Chinese (which is heavily focused on single-character root words, thus condensing a lot of meaning into a relatively short sentence) was largely a written form of Chinese used by elites. Historians do not seem to believe that people spoke classical Chinese, but a vernacular form of Chinese which we don’t have record of. Typically though, languages tend to become increasingly diverse over large swaths of land, which leads to the emergence of dialects native to different regions. As a result, people from different regions may not actually understand each other.

However, China was united as a kingdom over vast swaths of land for many periods in dynastical history. It had a political system where magistrates stationed in even the faraway reaches of the kingdom reported to the emperor and his cabinet of ministers in the capital. As such, if you wanted to be a magistrate, you would have to learn this written form of Chinese, and take the imperial exam to be selected for the position. As a magistrate, you would be expected to correspond with officials from other regions in this written form of Chinese. This written form was thus able to bridge the differences in spoken Chinese.

But according to my Chinese teachers!!! (Disclaimer: they are high school language teachers, not Chinese history professors, so I cannot completely guarantee the historical accuracy of these claims,) When modernization happened, transportation became more advanced and urbanization became more and more of a thing. Thus, society saw a greater intermingling of people from different regions who couldn’t necessarily understand each other in spoken Chinese. This necessitated the emergence of a new common spoken tongue. Modern Mandarin, which is often referred to as putong hua (lit. common language), was thus born.

THE MOVE FROM SINGLE TO MULTI-CHARACTER WORDS

According to my Chinese teachers (see previous disclaimer again), modern Mandarin basically moved away from the single-character focused lexicon of classical Chinese, towards increased usage of multi-character words. For example, the modern word for “conflict” 战争 is made of root words 战 and 争 both of which rooooughly mean “conflict” as well. In a classical lexicon, the root words would likely be used by themselves, but modern Chinese mostly uses multi-character words.

And this, according to my Chinese teachers, was to improve the understandability of spoken Chinese. Chinese language has a GREAT NUMBER of homophones, which can get REALLY FUCKING CONFUSING. The Zhan (战) in “conflict” sounds exactly the same as 站 (to stand) 占 (to occupy) 湛 (as in Lan Zhan), and more. As such, while the root words 战 and 争 may carry the intended meaning perfectly well in writing, in speech, they individually sound like a bazillion other words. Which thus necessitates these multi-character words. 战 may have many homophones, but 战争 has a great deal less homophones.

So why do we generally not do single-character names in speech anymore? BECAUSE IT CAN GET REALLY FUCKING CONFUSING. Like if you wanted to say something as simple and functional as “go to Zhan” (去湛那边), the Zhan of his name (湛) is a perfect homophone for 站 (to stand), so it literally just sounds like “go stand there” 😭😭😭 At least if you use his surname (Lan Zhan), a prefix (A-Zhan), or a suffix (Zhan’er) it becomes a whole lot clearer that you’re referring to a person.

THE TLDR;

This is a very long and roundabout way to say: please don’t replicate the Netflix subs in your fics. If you’re referring to someone with a single-character name, add a prefix or suffix to the name, like A-Cheng, or Cheng’er, or else use the full name, Jiang Cheng. Multi-character names are generally fine, for example, Wanyin, Wangji, or Xichen are all fine. Wuxian seems to be a little bit of a grey area. It does not seem to be used by characters in the novel, probably because it sounds like 无线 (wireless), which is the reason why the Chinese fandom likes to refer to him as “WiFi” 🤣

And stealing all of LWJ’s turtlenecks, for some odd reason! The boy clearly can’t take care of his own clothes, they’re all tattered and his hair is a birds nest.

Anyways, LWR is going on about how the homos are lecherous filth that have fallen to temptation or smth while covering up their transgressions by naming themselves odd things. Really, LQR asks, “what even is a pan-sexual?” (Or some other such thing that shows he doesn’t actually know anything anout being queer)

“Oh, you don’t know?” WWX asks, eyes wide and innocent and CLEARLY up to Some Shit. “Professor Lan, Professor Lan, Professor ‘show your sources do your research’ LAN. Do you not know what we’re debating about?”

LQR huffs and starts saying something about family values and continuing on bloodlines, but WWX is grinning like the cat that caught the canary.

“Professor, have you ever actually researched this? Or are you just wasting my time?” (An actual LQR quote from earlier in the semester)

LQR puffs up, and he’s all “of course I haven’t-“

“Well then, Sir,” WWX interrupts, manic joy written all over his expression, “may I just say that you have the audacity of a white man insisting that Mandarin is just a type of orange.”

The bell rings before LQR can get a word in, and WWX grabs his bag and books it to the door.

“I’ll send you some reading, Professor Lan! Let’s do this again when you know what you’re talking about!”

And with that he’s gone.

Now, WWX is only a little bit of a hypocrite, bc he definitely thought he was straight and only just managed his Revelation of “oh heck Lan Zhan is so pretty he turned me gay?” *research montage bc he actually has resources (and NHS definitely helped.) “Oh maybe girls are just pretty and I’m demisexual.”

However, the fact that he only JUST did this, means his ADHD self still has all the tabs open. And, like, he did say he’d send stuff, and this is Lan Zhan’s uncle. So, he compiles a helpful list of sites and articles, includes a link to a place where you can ask questions to the Queer Council, and sends it off.

LQR is initially going to ignore it, but then his scholar brain gets the better of him. WWX had made a point, he was woefully unprepared, and so with the intention of finding points to throw in that little brat’s face, he braces himself for horrible outlandish untraditional family-breaking nastiness, plus whatever else WWX might have put in there (ancestors if that horrid boy sent him PORN he’ll have him expelled) and opens the links.

Private University AU:

Lan Xichen is an art history professor as well as the Dean's nephew, and he relly wanted to be an artist fulltime but his family never allowed him to entertain the possibility. Now he paints and does little solo exhibitions as a side gig, but he does not have nearly enough time to dedicate to them and he is almost... embarrassed about doing art halfheartedly, or so he sees it. Fortunately, he likes people though his feelings on teaching are simply neutral. Also, he can see Meng Yao every day... he tries to stay positive!

Lan Wangji doesn't want to be a professor, and fully expected nobody to sign up for his music theory classes because, for the most part, he does not speak - he puts his slides up on the projector and then plays the music in question. He is both shocked and strangely pleased when students consistently show up - not many, but the same little group every time. He overhears in the corridor that they think he is "the coolest".

Wei Wuxian works at the university cafe. LWJ finds it infuriating that he has no interest in pursuing a PhD, because Wei Ying's thesis on the psychology of music changed his life. (the big reveal is that WWX is still working on his research, just on his own time and using uni credentials to access the library and borrow sources because they never revoked his student account). The university cafe is open to the public as well, and some kids from the nearby elementary school wander in sometimes because WWX gives them whatever pastries are left.

Meng Yao is an assistant language teacher working for a multinational dispatch company. He works part time, but spends pretty much his entire day at uni prepping materials and doing his own research. Lan Xichen makes a point to invite him to eat in the student cafeteria with him every day (the first time he asked, he mentioned taking him to a restaurant right outside campus where he often eats, but Meng Yao looked terrified at the prospect of leaving campus even for 30 minutes, so LXC course corrected!) JGS keeps saying the family visa will come through eventually, but in the meantime he needs to get by on a provisionary work visa which means he literally cannot quit his job at the dispatch company or he will be deported. Lan Xichen doesn't know this, and thank god, because otherwise he would immediately offer to marry him for a spouse visa and things would get even more awkward.

Nie Huaisang has been a student for six years and still hasn't finished his bachelor's degree. In fairness, it's because NMJ chose it for him and would not allow him to switch majors! NHS's idea of passive resistance is to do the bare minimum to stay in uni, but waste as much time (and money) as possible in doing so. He spends all of his time in the cafeteria playing geocaching games and swiping dating apps without doing anything about it. Sometimes he goes to classes that are entirely unrelated to his studies (like Lan Xichen's) just to hide away and people-watch, and because he knows LXC would never rat him out. Also he may be writing rpf of LXC and Meng Yao because he sucks. ;)

Ahahaha this was the last major MDZS fic I was working on. It is named thus bc I used to write at work and didn’t want people talking to me about “skin book au” bc that’s what it is!!

LWJ is a medical history professor who finds a book bound in human skin. He goes to the chemistry department at his university and gets help from WWX (a chemistry professor with PhDs in physics, chemistry, and forensics; he used to be a forensic examiner working with the police but was fired due to discovering an error made by someone else (that’s the short version)). Together they have to figure out where the book came from which involves, among other things: mass spectrometry analysis, particle accelerators, glue breakdown and analysis, and basically a ridiculous amount of science and also ethics. Plus flirting.

Anyway, a snippet!

“It’s basically the idea that two particles, no matter how far apart, are connected in a way that means that if one is affected by something, the other will experience it as well,” Wei Ying explained, gaze fixed on the book. “Like soul mates, kinda.”

“How romantic,” Lan Wangji observed, and Wei Ying shot him an amused look.

“I know right?” Wei Ying tossed his hair back and sighed, leaning his head against the top of Lan Wangji’s desk chair. “Physics: the romance science.”

“I believe that most people think of chemistry as the romance science,” Lan Wangji countered. He leaned against the wall next to his electric kettle, waiting for the water to boil.

Wei Ying waggled his eyebrows. “How romantic of me to have degrees in the two romance sciences, then.”

and then he fixes himself up and waits for lwj to come home.

lwj comes home, mentally exhausted as most media days always tend to leave him. except this time, there's a little more relief to coming home, because he knows wei ying will be waiting for him there.

wwx is not waiting for him there. or well, he's not waiting barefoot in the kitchen like he'd promised to this morning.

instead, wwx is staring up at the lwj skating his short program for sochi 2014 with the same starry-eyed, slack-jawed expression he wore when lwj did a tiny double toe loop at the public park on their first date.

he'd known from the moment they met that wwx had no interest or much knowledge about figure skating - he barely even knew how to skate. and though lwj never really talked about his career, he /has/ mentioned it to wwx, who seemed to have taken it in stride...

on screen, lwj's short program comes to a close, the camera focusing on the overwhelmed tears lwj had thought he'd managed to completely hide. wwx sniffles a little and lwj offers him his handkerchief. "wei ying...? are you oka--"

wwx jumps a foot of the couch with a screech. "LAN ZHAN!" lwj flinches a little. "YOU SCARED ME!! SINCE WHEN DID YOU COME BACK?!?!"

"just a few minutes..." truthfully, lwj's starting to feel a little miffed, the stress of the day catching up with him, and not a single hug or kiss from wwx in sight. "--ah, no, that's not it," wwx groans into his hands.

"aiyaa i lost track of time, this wasn't how it was supposed to go." wwx laments before launching himself out of the couch, wrapping arms and legs around lwj.

lwj inwardly thanks his core training for keeping him steady, and letting him enjoy having wwx in his arms.

instantly, all the tension eases from his shoulders and disappears completely when wwx pulls away to kiss him deep and slow.

"lan zhan, i missed you so much." wwx says in between pecks all over lwj's face. lwj hums in agreement. it truly was a long day.

"poor you," wwx says, rubbing circles at his temple and beneath his eyes. lwj barely resists the urge to purr. "were the press people mean to you?"

"not any more difficult than usual." lwj says, depositing the both of them on the couch.

then lwj pauses, wondering if he'd mentioned to wwx that today was indeed a press day...

"i do not break world records every competition." lwj replies dryly.

"lan zhaaan, that's not the point!" wwx kicks his legs in the air. "my boyfriend turns out to be a very important person and i didn't even know about it - i haven't been treating you right at all!"

"in what ways has wei ying not treated me right?" lwj tugs wwx closer by the wrists. "have you ever harmed or abused me in any way? have you ever treated me unkindly or with disrespect?"

"of course not, but that's basic human decency!" wwx says. "i should've been spoiling you!"

"and am i not spoiled with wei ying's affection every day?" lwj asks. wwx pouts. "the only way i want to be treated is as wei ying's partner - not as a celebrity or someone to worship - but as wei ying's equal."

"aiyaa, what have i said about those words of yours! have mercy on my poor heart." wwx whines, before kissing him again, and lwj knows he's won.

"i still think you deserve better..."

"i could say the same to wei ying." lwj says.

"my boyfriend is also an important figure in his industry, and has contributed greatly, making history with his many accomplishments." lwj says, immensely enjoying the deep flush creeping up wwx's face and neck.

Sometimes! I used to respond to every single comment I got when I first started posting, but then I just got really overwhelmed and had to stop, and I've never picked up the habit again. If I feel particularly strongly about a comment or have something specific to say I'll try to respond, but otherwise I bask in them all silently (sorry, and I love y'all, I really do read every single comment I swear).

The Shadow's Call - An extremely depressed Lan Xichen is violently dragged out of his seclusion in the Hanshi 8 years post-canon by fierce corpse NieYao, who definitely aren't sentient at all but still somehow feel incomplete without their third.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Aside from The Shadow's Call all of my fics end happily!! I just can't do the depressing ones most of the time 😅 I think some of my favorite happy endings for various reasons, though, are The Sculptor, After Each Midnight Begins A New Day, anything in the Orville Peck Cinematic Universe, and anything from the 90's Strip Mall AU, Tales From Jianghu Shopping Center. (Everything in the last two especially is just pure feel-good fluff, not only the endings haha)

Not anymore! The XiYao troll must have found something better to do so we can now like JGY in peace 😌

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do! I don't know what kind though 😅 the smutty kind? I don't really delve too deeply into kink or BDSM, and I don't write omegaverse or tentacles or anything all that creative; I just write what I would consider bog standard 'I'm ace and I understand people like doing this, I really hope the allos find this enjoyable to read' kind of smut. (Usually for me it's more about the emotional impact/character development use of it rather than the porn-y-ness of it, if that helps??)

Nope! I like writing AU's of my favorite ships blended with other media I like, but not direct crossovers.

What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Plans To Make - In an ideal world I would finish this soon so I can stop being eaten up with low-simmering guilt about it (along with several other projects, let's be real), but the fact of the matter is that I never actually wanted to write the full fix-it for this universe in the first place. I started Lan Xichen's introduction into this universe after the fix-it has already happened partially because I find that dynamic of a depressed Lan Xichen suddenly partnered with a happily married NieYao really interesting, but also because I don't like all the tangled threads of a universe-wide fix-it and I knew I'd get way too bogged down in details to really enjoy it. That's exactly what's happened, and that's partially why the fic has been sitting so long without an update. I do really want to finish it one day, though.

What are your writing strengths?

I occasionally get comments praising my characterization/character voices, so hopefully that's one. I also like to think that I do a decent job with accurately communicating both relatable and not-quite-as-relatable experiences - queerness of various flavors, neurodivergence, strangely specific life experiences...I usually try to write what I know, and I'm always happy when it resonates with people in the ways that I'd hoped for while writing them.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I feel like I can get sooo long-winded, and I'm also kind of bad for setting up plotty bits in my longer fics that I never actually follow through on.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

The furthest I'll go is honorifics that I'm confident with using, I absolutely do not trust myself or any online translator to attempt whole lines of dialogue.

School for Good and Evil AU (finally)

So, a little premise is due: I have only seen the movie, but the book is in my to-read list, so don't crucify me.

Also, I have seen the poll results and we really are a hivemind fandom lol

So, AU under the cut!

As said, JC and WWX live in LP a quiet, boring life. Yanli is there as well as their elder sister and it's okay, except it's not. Somehow NHS, the local librarian (?), mentions the existence of the School for Good and Evil, because WWX spots one of the books marked with the school's logo and he is like "WHAT IS THAT?"

And NHS is more than happy to explain.

Now, because I want to keep the wuxia/xianxia elements, I will say that the School for Good is where all of the classic heroes/heroines in wuxia/xianxia are trained, with good cultivation and righteous paths and all, and the School for Evil is where the wuxia/xianxia villains, with like demonic cultivation, crooked path and all, are trained.

So, WWX is hellbent on going to this School for Good and Evil out of curiosity, boredom and all - "you mean, I will be able to invent stuff, fight villains, be someone everyone can be proud of, and also, ChengCheng, Aunt Yu will not be scolding me all the time! It's a win"

"Yeah, sure, but how do you think I-, I mean, a-jie will take it? Also, did you not promise me we'd be together as sworn brothers?"

"... Yeah, I did... You know, forget I said it, I'll go wherever you will go!"

And then WWX breaks his promise and JC goes to find him, just to discover that he is going to the School for Good and Evil leaving everyone behind and JC in particular behind and JC is not thrilled.

Their conversation is cut short by the humongous bird coming down and grabbing them both and then flying all the way to the school.

Now, WWX is really a tad too much arrogant, which is usually toned down by his massive caring heart, but it's there nonetheless and he is so sure he will be in the Good school.

JC, on the other side, really just wants to go back home dragging back WWX and wants to have nothing to do with any school.

And WWX sees the Good school, high in the sky, full of nice trees and all like

And then he sees the Evil School, all shrouded in darkness and smoke like

and WWX smiles until the aforementioned bird drops him off in the Evil school, much to WWX's disappointment and JC's distress.

JC gets dropped off at the Good School.

And both WWX and JC hate it.

They both raise hell, but it is useless. WWX gets draped in wuxia villain red and black robes and given the Red Eyeliner of Evilness, whilst JC gets draped in the fanciest wuxia hero robes and given the Righteous Sword to Smite Evilness.

Neither of them are thrilled.

Cue WWX angry-pouting and JC sarcastically frowning.

There is the whole parade thing and here we meet the Perfect Hero Lan Wangji, all draped in white and light blue, sword in one hand and guqin floating in front of him.

WWX sees him and he is smitten, completely fallen in love.

On the other hand, LWJ and JC immediately hate each other's guts.

Soon after we meet Rector LQR, followed by Good School's professor LXC and Evil School's professor WC.

Once again WWX and JC try to present their case, that there has been a mistake, but it seems that "the School has not made any mistakes".

For the next Fic Finder, I read this long time ago and can't remember the title but it was a long fic (one shot) and I remember it was an AU (kinda futuristic from what I remember) where Wei Ying was a werewolf shifter and he was on the run when he got transported/summoned to another world by some mages Lan Zhan being among them when he first came to the new world. There's some magic academy mystery they needed his help with and in the end Wei Ying stays in the new world with Lan Zhan. I also remember towards the end, the reason Lan Zhan was involved and so intrigued by Wei Ying because his brother turned into a werewolf but with none of his humanity and he was trying to find a solution to save him. Wei Ying was helping with him when he went back with Lan Zhan to his home.

7. Hi!! I've looked for this fic on ao3 and my bookmarks list but I was unable to find it, maybe I've been filtering with wrong tags or keywords.

But from what I remember, it was an au where if you love someone enough, the first time you touch them you leave a colored mark on them. Wwx has left his signature red on most people, but has never had any marks left on him, not even from jyl. So he always covers himself up and wears gloves, accepting he'd never be loved, until of course Lwj leaves a blue hand print on him. It isn't a soulmate au though, I don't exactly remember if it was canon settings or modern settings.

8. Hi! There is a fic that i want to read again. The problem is, not only i don't remember much of the story, i don't know if this fic is from this fandom or detective conan. But i'm sure it's from this fandom. It's modern au where there are serial killer on the loose. WWX investigate it. He has an ability to see the corpse's past (i think he has an ability? Not sure about this part). But even with his ability, he can't solve it. There are connection between the victim. Their connection is the next victim is the one that found the previous victim (again i'm not sure if it only the one that found the body or other witnesses too). The state of their body is brutal. There are some evidence of torture. WWX investigate this until he become the target because he found the newest victim. I think he was kidnapped and when he wake up he is in a room. I don't know how to explain it but he tried to escape like the previous victims but the room or more like the place he was in is full of trap. If you ever watch danganronpa v3 side despair, the place is similar to when Nanami Chiaki died. Thats all i can remember. I trully hope its not my imagination. fic search: WWX was reincarnated and LWJ was immortal. Set in modern times. LWJ had a lot of little bits where he hadn't fully caught up with technology. I believe he had adopted LSZ as well? And may have been a music teacher?

I also believe both LWJ and LXC were immortal.

In WWX's modern backstory, he was on the outs with the Jiangs after he had accidentally injured JYL on her wedding day and she bad been in the hospital ever since, so Jin Ling was being raised by Jiang Cheng.

Wen Ning may also have been working at a coffee shop and may have been dating Mo XaunYu

WIP Wednesday: Lawyer AU, first impression

Phew, in under the wire this week! The Beta WWX/Alpha LWJ fic continues to bedevil me - I'm making progress, but it's like pulling teeth much of the time. The Dare was like this for a while, and it eventually came together, so I have faith. But ugh, while it's happening, it's no fun! It'll be posted in 3 chapters, and I'm wondering about posting the chapters as they're finished instead of all at once. I almost never do that, but... maybe I could use the encouragement. We'll see. Anyway, in the meantime, more Lawyer AU - this time, Lan Zhan's first impression of Wei Ying, when they meet for the first time in law school!

There is this girl. In Lan Zhan’s 1L class – in Lan Zhan’s small-group section, in fact. Chinese, pretty—and obnoxious. Lan Zhan came to law school prepared to like none of her classmates, but she did not come prepared to spend every class seething.

This girl—Wei Ying—constantly raises her hand in class. Doesn’t care that everyone thinks she’s the worst kind of gunner, doesn’t care that Lan Zhan thinks she’s a gunner, doesn’t care that she’s playing into stereotypes about Chinese students and that the rest of them, including Lan Zhan, will pay for it, and the most irritating part of all is that she’s—

Brilliant.

All of her questions are sharp; all of her suggestions are creative, unorthodox; all of her cold-calls are exemplary. In a display of infuriating arrogance, she is utterly unintimidated by the professors. While everyone else is wincing and ducking their heads, feeling their own intellectual inferiority for the first time, realizing they’re not big fish anymore, this girl has the nerve to talk to the professors like equals. She never lets them push her on the hypotheticals: when they try, she acknowledges the merits of their arguments but stands firm on her conclusion. No one accomplishes that so consistently. No one even tries so consistently.

(Lan Zhan does not consider herself in this equation. She was raised by a federal judge; taught law at the dinner table from the age of six. Naturally, she feels more comfortable asserting herself in class.)

This Wei Ying is at office hours so frequently—debating with the professors, charming them, talking about things that have nothing to do with the course—that it seems she is already there every time Lan Zhan knocks on the door of a professor’s office to ask her own questions.

Once, Wei Ying leaves her Civil Procedure textbook behind in the classroom, and Lan Zhan picks it up to return it to her. Her curiosity gets the better of her, and she opens the book; flips through it. She is infuriated to find it blank: no highlighting, no underlining, no notes in the margins.

Lan Zhan does not swear often. She was raised to find it tasteless, and an admission of rhetorical defeat. There is always some more appropriate way to express the thought; only the lazy resort to profanity to convey vehemence.

But as she stares at the blank pages of that textbook, all she can think is: Who the fuck is this girl?

(Months later, it will dawn on her: a clean book can be sold back to the campus bookstore for a higher price than a marked-up one, when the semester is over.

It is not something Lan Zhan has ever had to think about. One of a thousand ways she takes her family’s money for granted.

Wei Ying does not have that luxury.)

She is assigned to edit Wei Ying’s brief for their Legal Practice class, and is further infuriated to find that she has no structural criticisms to offer: merely edits that she can admit to herself are nitpicks, and a few suggestions to accomplish greater concision. Wei Ying writes in long, sprawling sentences, and Lan Zhan is sure that they must be run-ons, sure of it, there’s a reason writing instructors preach short sentences. She goes through the draft armed with a red pen, looking for periods to insert, but—

The awful thing is, Wei Ying’s gargantuan sentences are grammatical. Like magic, like witchcraft, they break every rule of good composition, and they are…

Beautiful. Clear. Persuasive. Forceful. Virtues that Lan Zhan was taught could only accompany concision. But she can recognize them when she sees them.

And she sees them in Wei Ying.

lxc being a business major in a modern AU makes perfect sense but I actually don't think it suits lqr very well. in the show they said he hadn't attended a conference in decades...im sure he's perfectly politically competent but imo hes at his core a teacher. a very prestigious and well-respected professor and probably a board member or however thats organized, he definitely has power in some intitutional capacity. but also I can see him pushing lwj to do business because wanting his nephews to be safe/taken care of regardless of their own desires is also a big part of their dynamic
