thinking about neil recording demos a couple months before he met chris
#i mentioned it today to my mom and now im like oh. hm#i can't exactly articulate it im too tired#just the fact he did that interests me#i wish he'd talk more about his thought process from that time#because yeah he was getting into electronic music and that was quickly becoming apparent to be the next Thing in popular music#hence why he bought a synthesizer#but even tho he spent his redundancy money on it thats still a big investment and commitment#and then to go and record demos professionally at a studio?#idk it just seemed like around that time/before then he kind of became disillusioned that he'd actually get anywhere#to then doing all of that in 1980/1981#i just want some kind of insight in what was going through his head beyond what he kind of says in the preface of his book#he broke up with his girlfriend around then idk if that had anything to do with it. probably not but 🤷♀️

i didnt used to understand what was so appealing about tragedy but im finally in a real situation where i'm like, what if it could have been different, and i think i get it now
#ari opinion hour#tl;dr my applied faculty member completely sucks for a multitude of reasons but has tenure#and im in the techniques class (class where music ed majors learn instruments) that has my instrument in it (sax/clarinet/flute)#and one of the other applied professors is everything my main professor is not#(shows up to class every single day with a lesson plan‚ is actually professional‚ very CLEARLY understands how to teach in a way that is#catered to the students aka pays attention to make sure students are actually. yk. UNDERSTANDING THE MATERIAL‚ has an ed degree and#therefore understands where we're coming from and knows things about OTHER instruments‚ isnt unhappy when ppl in his studio play other#instruments more than the bare minimum required for the degree‚ rephrases if someone isnt getting it rather than just Saying It Again‚ is#also like one of the most qualified applied faculty tbh)#so im like. What could have been different. How could i change everything.

How Do Studio Monitors Compare to Regular Speakers for Mixing Music?
If you’ve ever dabbled in music production or thought about mixing your tracks, you’ve probably heard people mention studio monitors. But what exactly are they, and how do they differ from the regular speakers most of us are used to? Whether you’re new to audio production or just looking to upgrade your setup, understanding the key differences between these two types of speakers is essential for making the right choice.
Let’s break it down.
What Are Studio Monitors?
Studio monitors are specialized speakers designed for professional audio work like mixing, mastering, and recording music. Their main job is to provide a neutral and accurate sound that lets you hear your audio exactly as it is. Unlike regular speakers, which often enhance certain frequencies to make music sound more appealing, studio monitors aim to reproduce sound as faithfully as possible.
This accuracy helps musicians and producers catch subtle details and flaws in their work. For example, if there’s a tiny imbalance in the bass or a vocal that’s too loud, studio monitors will reveal it, ensuring the final mix sounds great on any device.
How Do Regular Speakers Work?
Most regular speakers are built for casual listening. They’re designed to make music sound good, not necessarily accurate. This often means boosting the bass, treble, or other frequencies to create a richer, more enjoyable listening experience. While this is perfect for jamming out to your favorite playlist, it’s not ideal for mixing music where precision is key.
For instance, if a regular speaker boosts the bass, you might end up lowering it too much during the mix. When the track plays on another device, it might sound thin or imbalanced. That’s why professionals prefer studio monitors for mixing—they provide a more honest representation of the sound.
Key Differences Between Studio Monitors and Regular Speakers
Let’s dive into the major ways studio monitors and regular speakers differ:
Frequency Response
Studio Monitors: Flat frequency response, meaning they don’t enhance or suppress any part of the audio spectrum. This neutrality is crucial for accurate mixing.
Regular Speakers: Often have a "colored" sound, with boosted bass or treble to make music more enjoyable for everyday listening.
Design and Placement
Studio Monitors: Designed for nearfield listening, which means they’re optimized for being placed close to the listener (like on a desk in a studio setup). This minimizes the impact of room acoustics.
Regular Speakers: Typically designed for far-field listening, like filling a living room with sound. They rely more on the acoustics of the room.
Purpose
Studio Monitors: Built for critical listening, allowing you to hear every detail, flaw, and nuance in your mix.
Regular Speakers: Designed for entertainment, making music sound "good" rather than accurate.
Price
Studio Monitors: Can be more expensive, especially at the high end, because they prioritize performance and accuracy.
Regular Speakers: Usually more affordable, as they’re mass-produced for general use.
Why Accuracy Matters for Mixing
Imagine you’re baking a cake, but your measuring cups are all inaccurate. Even if the cake turns out fine in your oven, it might not bake correctly in someone else’s. Mixing music is similar—if your speakers don’t give you an accurate picture of your audio, it might sound great in your studio but fall flat on other systems.
Studio monitors act like precise measuring tools, giving you confidence that your mix will translate well to other devices, whether it’s a car stereo, earbuds, or a home theater system.
When to Use Studio Monitors vs. Regular Speakers
Use Studio Monitors If:
You’re mixing or mastering music.
You need to hear every detail of your audio.
You’re working in a small studio or dedicated workspace.
Use Regular Speakers If:
You’re casually listening to music.
You’re hosting a party or need to fill a large room with sound.
You don’t need precise audio reproduction.
Tips for Setting Up Studio Monitors
If you decide to invest in studio monitors, proper setup is crucial to get the best results. Here are some tips:
Positioning: Place them at ear level and in an equilateral triangle with your listening position.
Room Treatment: Minimize reflections and echoes with acoustic panels or foam.
Calibration: Some monitors allow you to adjust settings to compensate for your room’s acoustics.
Use High-Quality Cables: Avoid cheap or poorly shielded cables that could introduce noise.
Choosing the right studio monitors can feel overwhelming with so many options out there. Professional audio shops like VIP PRO AUDIO are a great resource for expert advice and recommendations tailored to your needs. They often let you test different models, ensuring you find the perfect fit for your setup. Plus, buying from a reputable shop gives you peace of mind with warranties and customer support.
Final Thoughts
Studio monitors and regular speakers serve very different purposes. If you’re serious about music production, studio monitors are an essential investment for accurate mixing and mastering. Regular speakers, on the other hand, are perfect for enjoying music once the mixing process is done.
By understanding the strengths and limitations of each, you can make an informed decision that suits your needs. And remember, whether you’re setting up a home studio or upgrading your current gear, professional audio shops are your best bet for finding high-quality equipment that won’t let you down.
So, are you ready to take your music mixing game to the next level? It might be time to swap out those regular speakers for a pair of reliable studio monitors!

A Guide to Choosing the Right Recording Studio
In the heart of a bustling city, Sarah, a passionate singer-songwriter, sat in her tiny apartment, guitar in hand, dreaming of the day her music would reach the world. With a notebook full of lyrics and melodies, she realized it was time to bring her songs to life in a professional setting. But the question loomed large: how to choose the right recording studio? Sarah knew this decision could make or break her career.
Choosing the right recording studio is a crucial step for musicians and artists looking to elevate their sound. With over 4,000 recording studios in the United States alone, finding the perfect one can be daunting. According to a survey by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), studios that invest in high-quality equipment and skilled engineers have seen a 20% increase in client satisfaction compared to those that don’t. The right studio offers more than just equipment; it provides an environment where creativity thrives.
When selecting a recording studio, consider the equipment and technology available. Modern studios are equipped with state-of-the-art digital and analog systems that cater to diverse musical needs. A study by Sound on Sound magazine revealed that artists who record in studios with advanced technology experience a 30% improvement in their overall production quality. Baltic Studios, for example, prides itself on offering cutting-edge technology, ensuring that every recording session meets the highest standards.
The expertise of the sound engineers and producers is another crucial factor. Experienced professionals can bring out the best in your music, offering guidance and technical skills that enhance the creative process. The Association of Professional Recording Studios (APRS) found that artists working with seasoned engineers reported a 25% increase in the quality and efficiency of their recording sessions.
For senior musicians and artists, recording studios offer a unique opportunity to continue pursuing their passion for music. Baltic Studios understands the importance of accessibility and has made efforts to create a welcoming environment for seniors, providing easy access and accommodating services. This not only helps seniors continue their artistic endeavors but also enriches their daily lives by keeping them engaged in creative activities.
Moreover, the studio's location and ambiance significantly impact the recording experience. A comfortable and inspiring environment can boost creativity and productivity. Artists often choose studios based on their proximity to home and the surrounding amenities. For example, Baltic Studios is conveniently located, offering musicians a serene setting that fosters creativity while providing access to local attractions.
In conclusion, choosing the right recording studio is a vital decision for musicians and artists. By considering factors such as technology, expertise, and environment, you can find a studio that aligns with your artistic vision. Studios like Baltic Studios not only cater to the technical needs of recording but also support the personal and professional growth of musicians, including seniors. How will you ensure your next recording session brings out the best in your music?
